Gawain's personality can be compared to the eye of a storm: reliable and mild but ready at any moment to fly into spontaneous and reckless action. He's a moderately outgoing and social guy, and most people (with a few notable exceptions) get along well with him. He tends to be suspicious, a sentiment which can be helpful but also hurtful. Gawain is very caring and although he can sulk at times, he has pleasant gentleman-like manners.

Gawain is self-disciplined in all but one respect: his tongue. He simply can't help but make joking remarks at inappropriate times (such as funerals and dramatic moments). Gawain's irrepressible wit and audacity often get him into trouble, but usually his cheeky remarks are just good clean fun. Besides making jokes, much of Gawain's conversation is mild argumentation mixed with solid common sense.

Some people may find it odd that Gawain scorns his softer feelings and tries to seem impervious to strong emotions such as fear, sorrow, and even love. This reaction is the direct result of his belief that heroes can't show emotion or they become vulnerable. When Gawain has a crush on a girl he rarely expresses the feeling and tends to leave the girl guessing. Even when he is completely crazy about someone, he is very reluctant to tell her so. Gawain's troubled childhood and lack of support from his parents and peers has made him self-critical, cynical, and rebellious against all those who seek to control him. He tries to be a virtuous person but he constantly fears inadequacy. And although he's normally stable, Gawain has been known to go through periods of extreme and irrational mood swings.

Unknown. It's likely that he inherited his dark powers from his mother, but Gawain hates the thought that he's anything like his mother. All he knows is that he powers tend to grow in strength when he's agitated or upset.

Powers

Dark Lightning. Last year at the Christmas Ball, Gawain woke up to find himself in the middle of an indoor lightning storm that he had accidentally created. That's when he discovered that he is not a muggle after all. For a while Gawain had great difficulty controlling his lightning powers, but with the help of the orb that Ally recently gave him, he should be able to control them perfectly well. Gawain's not overly fond of using his lightning powers but he will do so in the direst emergencies.

Hobbies
Gawain has mild insomnia so he likes to watch the weather change and the night sky. He's also devoted to his swordfighting and piloting training and he practices both frequently. Gawain likes to read but seldom finds the time to do so, and he's a decent levabike rider. Gawain used to make a habit of skipping lessons but he stopped playing hookie when he enrolled at Red Fountain, where more or less all the the classes are to his tastes (this last former hobby he keeps a secret from his sister).

Gawain is sharp-witted and works hard enough to get high grades at Red Fountain, usually A's. His best subjects are swordfighting and physics. Gawain doesn't currently have a roomate but he spends so much time with Derrick and Kelan that they might as well be his roommates.

Gawain's mother gave him this blue-hilted sword as an 'apology gift' shortly after she screamed at him for disturbing one of her spells. It was an unusual present for a child but one that Gawain was delighted to recieve. He discovered that this sword is a strong anti-magic (it absorbs all magic that it comes in direct contact with). For years the sword absorbed his magic and kept it hidden but Gawain threw it away after it failed to hit Queen Prias, and since then he's been able to use his powers. To this day he doesn't know where his sword is or whose clutches it has fallen into...

Animals

This is Emerald, Gawain's very tempermental pet. A few years ago Blossom found the dragon prowling about in the woods and immediately called for Gawain for help. He captured the then dog-sized dragon and named her Emerald for lack of a more distinctive feature than her bright green scales. Gawain occasionally rides on her when he has to travel long distances quickly. He and Emerald aren't particularly close but they tolerate each other, just barely. She has a nasty habit of biting people and frequently disregards her master's commands. Gawain often wishes that he had a more affable pet, like a horse or even a dog.

A tall broad-shouldered king sat on a mahogany wood throne. He didn't spare a glance for the impatient lady standing in front of him but instead drew patience from the familiarity of the audience chamber, from the orange dome shaped ceiling to the elaborate tapestries of hunting scenes hanging on the walls. Meanwhile the hot-headed twenty year old beauty, a baby in her arms, glared contemptuously at her middle-aged husband, demanding his attention.
Don't you want glory? Coward! she cried reproachfully, her classical features temporarily distorted with unchecked anger. Now, Cerise darling…her brown-haired husband sighed, his tired grey eyes coming at last to behold her with cautious adoration. Don't you 'Cerise darling' me, Emrys. The kingdom of Meridean is weak and ripe for the taking. Our armies are a thousand strong, that's more than enough to conquer it! If not for ourselves, think of our son. When he's king the country will be a valuable asset and proof that his father is not a sniveling coward. she snapped irritably, her -disallowed_word- despite Lily's insistence that it exists) so he doesn't allow his so-called 'fate' to affect his plans of becoming a famous hero.

Future Prospects
During his last trip to Nectarine, Gawain gave a cautious demonstration of his lightning powers and was re-accepted into the Desmond family. To his happiness and satisfaction (because to the complete shock of his peers) Gawain immediately inherited the kingdom of Nectarine and replaced his little sister as sovereign. However, since he is neither unjustly selfish nor ambitious for power, he promptly split the good-sized kingdom of Nectarine into two separate halves: keeping the Western mountains for himself and giving Blossom the Eastern countryside. Although this decision caused quite a stir at first, Gawain trusts that it is the best and fairest way to settle the question of inheritance once and for all.

Greatest Fears
Gawain claims to be fearless but he's really not. He's wary about letting anyone get too close to him, because whether it's making his sister evil's target or breaking someone's heart he tends to accidentally hurt those around him. Gawain also fears that he will fail expectations. He tries to ignore the disappointed voices of his friends and parents, but inside it pains him deeply.

Gawain has finally admitted to himself that what started as a little crush is now love. Looking back, he suspects himself of having been enamored of Star ever since they danced at the Christmas Ball, scarcely a month after his painful breakup with Jessie. But regardless of how long he's been in love, Gawain is more determined than ever to separate himself from this bubbly ice witch. The shocking experience of Star getting nearly killed by his lightning has taught Gawain that his presence must always be a constant danger to Star. Gawain is willing to deny his own love and wishes for the sake of Star's safety and happiness, but if he knew what Star's feelings were on the subject it's possible that he would change his mind about getting involved with her.

After two almost consecutive separations, Gawain was guiltily surprised to find that his affection for Jessie had cooled and faded. Most likely it had only been long-lived infatuation and nothing deeper. Jessie and Gawain had quarreled frequently while they were dating and it was a roller coaster relationship that almost drove Gawain wild with jealousy and pain. After they broke up for the last time Jessie magically wiped her memory of their relationship so happily no lasting harm was done to her, but the harm it's done to Gawain has revealed itself in his pessimism and almost fear of falling in love again.
Although Gawain is still very fond of Jessie, Star has taken her place in his heart.

Friends and Family

Blossom
Blossom is Gawain's sweet if somewhat clueless little sister. The two are only a year and a half apart in age, but since Gawain is mature and his sister is rather childish the difference can seem greater.
As children growing up in Nectarine Gawain sought so hard to please his parents only to fail and turn rebellious, while Blossom succeeded in winning hearts without even trying. Gawain had reason to be jealous of his sister then but instead he found that her innocent ways and unconditional love for him led him to treat her with kindness.
The heavy burden of watching after Blossom fell completely on Gawain's shoulders when their father died and their mother ran away in disgrace after trying to usurp the throne from her children. Gawain has since struggled with trying to be both a brother and father to Blossom, and it hasn't been easy for him. But is his stalwart protectiveness of her a bit excessive?
Blossom adores her brother and trusts his judgement above all else...or at least she used to. But after Gawain and Cale fought over Blossom and demanded that she choose between them, Blossom started to take a more active role in makign her own decisions. She ended up spurning both boys until they learned to get along, and has since allowed herself to take a greater control over her own life. The siblings resemble each other in their sweet tempers, sensitivity, and sense of humor but other than that they don't have many characteristics in common. In looks Blossom is very much like their mother excepting the fact that her hair is auburn, but her personality is nothing like Queen Cerise's.

Derrick
Derrick is probably the closest thing that Gawain has to a best friend. The two have fought basilisks, magic-wielders and dragons side by side (as well as a war on opposing sides) and as a result there's a strong feeling of trust between them.
On Gawain's side there's also a feeling of deep gratitude, because during the war Derrick stopped Queen Prias' from murdering Blossom and Lily, although in doing so he very nearly lost his own life.
Derrick is highly courageous and clever, but sadly underappreciated by most due to his cold and borderline polite manners. Yet once one gets to know Derrick, he shows a certain degree of pleasantness and humor that cannot be overlooked. :)
Gawain's unsure whether the icy Derrick is actually thawing or whether their friend Kelan is rubbing off on him a little. Either way, the three of them (Derrick, Gawain, and Kelan) have become a sort of trio. They love to tease each other and just hang out.
Gawain was very surprised to discover Derrick's dark vampirish secret, but he's taking his friend's fascinating dual identity in stride. He even thinks that being a vampire is kind of cool. Gawain was once bitten by Derrick and although the experience was sickening, the scar is pretty impressive-looking (or so Gawain happily proclaims).
Gawain and Derrick haven't spoken since a certain incident at the hospital ward. Frankly, Gawain fully expects Derrick to attack him as soon as they meet.

Jessie
Jessie's a passionate, clumsy, and funny girl who is always either glowingly happy or weeping and depressed (but Gawain assumes that emotional highs and lows are part of the terrirory of being the fairy of love).
Jessie's one of the most attractive girls at Alfea. Her hair is a pretty shade of purple highlighted with pink and blonde so that it's three colors in all, and she dresses well. She's immensely popular and has had a number of suitors and boyfriends (including Gawain).
Jessie has wonderful sea/love based powers and she is a mermaid princess. Unfortunately the fact that she's a mermaid makes her subject to a variety of strange restrictions that interfere with how she would like to live her life. For example, she is only supposed to date mermen and must return to the sea frequently to check up on her kingdom.
Gawain finds Jessie likable on her own, but when she comes together with her friend Namine he refers to them as the 'Terrible Twosome', due to their hyper and unpleasently teasing ways. Yet lately Jessie has been quieter than is normal for her. She's also been very helpful and has spent more time aiding others than doing things for herself. Gawain thinks that she's becoming a little more subdued than she used to be, but perhaps she just has a lot on her mind.

Star
Star's a hyper happy witch whom Gawain is fond of. She's a unique and rather strange mixture of the purest intentions and a secret vampire thirst for blood.
Star has a great if random sense of humor, and she can always make Gawain laugh with her joking comments. Of course Star also has a darker side and a rough past that involves a frozen land, a dead friend, and estranged parents (whom Gawain urges her to visit). She has a self-sacrificing spirit and a too humble opinion of herself; she once offered to heal Gawain of his battle injuries ghost-style by taking on the injuries herself (it's irrelevant that Gawain declined her offer).
Star's elegant, modest, and occasionally sweet nature is very fetching. Gawain worries about her sometimes, because on more than one occasion she's seemed drained and exhausted or near to falling apart at the seams.
They share a passion for the stars and hang out with a common group of friends. Gawain finds Star to be rather odd in both appearance and habits but recently he's been seeking her company more often than he had used to. Gawain has repeatedly declared that he and Star are just friends, but in truth he's dazzled by her and thinks of her as more than just an old pal.

Lily
Living among giggling schoolgirls, Lily stands out as a mature and courageous young woman who posesses a wisdom beyond her years. She's very caring and truly noble-minded (sometimes excessively so according to Gawain). As a result this fairy of happy endings works tirelessly to keep her friends safe and happy, whether that means matchmaking or listening patiently to grievances.
This half-angel is both an altruist and a natural born leader: she did a phenomenal job as commander of the Ballorian war troops, leader of the nature camp adventure, and hostess of the grand ballorian Christmas Ball.
Lily's most troublesome flaw is probably her habit of misjudging Derrick and quarreling with him. The love/hate relationship between the Ballorian princess and the Avarenthian prince has caused countless headaches to their mutual friends, and to the group as a whole.
Gawain and Lily tend to confide in each other, and among all his friends Gawain's usually the most open with her. Lily even told him about how her mother Queen Evelyn was banished long ago for the suspected use of dark magic.
The two are very close friends-but not romantically involved in the least. The one time that Gawain kissed Lily it was purely to distract Derrick from discovering the vampire bite scar that Derrick had given her.

Raine
Raine's a strong down-to-earth grey witch who hangs out at Alfea and is good friends with Gawain's sister. The way she watches out for Blossom and the way she tackled Cale at nature camp have won her Gawain's admiration and half-fearful respect.
Raine is fiercely brave and very loyal to her friends. Unlike many, she doesn't feel the need to conform her personality to get other people to like her. Being a witch, Raine spends most of her time at Cloud Tower. However she also takes a few classes at Alfea and hands out with the Alfea/Red Fountain crowd. Her visits aren't too frequent and are always a surprise, but that only makes them all the more welcome.
Raine likes to yell at Gawain and has a quick temper. Gawain doesn't take it personally since her scorn for 'wanna-be heroes' is well-known, andsince of all his girl friends Raine is the only one who doesn't need a specialist to rescue her from danger.

RJ
Rj is a nice and friendly girl who has a cute pixie named Sapphire. She seems to have a great affinity for the color purple, as she's the keeper of the lavender pearl and purple-haired when in mermaid form.
RJ and Gawain have talked occasionally and are on good terms with each other. RJ's crush Jake, on the other hand, acted agressively and overprotectively of RJ at the Christmas Ball. Even so Gawain trust RJ's judgment where it comes to people and is willing to believe that RJ sees something in Jake which he does not.
Recently RJ's been troubled by strange dreams.

Ally
Ally and Gawain have been friends for a while. And although they do tend to argue a lot, it's generally the playful type of fighting that occurs when two strong-opinioned individuals meet. The two have other traits in common as well. For example Ally and Gawain both love roller coasters; they rode the space mountain ride when they went to Disneyland.
Ally is very brave and is much more the fierce battling type than most of the fairies. Gawain greatly admires that in her but it also makes him rather wary of her when she's angry (*cowers*). For one so friendly and chatty, Ally has a startling connection to a clan of dark witches that constantly seek to draw her back to the dark side. led by Lord Drake, this clan occasionally attacks Ally and her friends. Once not long ago they even succeeded in turning her evil...
Most of the time (when she's not brainwashed and turned evil) Ally is a good-humored and amiable companion. More than once Ally has told Gawain that she likes him, but Gawain is unsure how to respond to that since he only likes Ally as a friend. And since Gawain asked Star out he's begun to sense some tension between Star and Ally...or maybe it's just his imagination.

Kelan
Kelan's a high-spirited joker with great charm and a short attention span. He was serious and responsible on the Nectarine battlefield, but at the Christmas Ball he seemed to relax and his carefree nature shone through. Among their friends and acquaintances Kelan is popular and widely liked for his cheerful temper and playfullness.
Kelan and Derrick are old friends, and as a matter of fact Derrick introduced Kelan to Gawain. The two get along well and have promised to have a friendly fight one of these days (which Gawain fully intends to win ;3).
Kelan can be quite a flirt when he puts his mind to it. Derrick has had to hunt Kelan down and drag him from Alfea on a number of occasions. Gawain often watches, in amazement, as Kelan gets the phone numbers of most of the unmarried young females he comes in contact with.
Kelan may be a lady's man but he's also a great companion for guys. He loves to joke and is always good for a laugh (or several).
Gawain knows little about Kelan's past except for the fact that he grew up in Avarenth and held a high position in their army. If Gawain stopped to consider it, he would be surprised by how Kelan only seems to share glowingly happy memories.

Vanessa
Gawain's original opinion of Vanessa has mellowed and softened over time. He originally disliked her and saw her as a disdainful suffering girl, but now he sees that she means no harm and is essentially a good caring person.
Vanessa is very sensitive and is often moody and unhappy. Lately though she's seemed much happier than is normal for her, and has been seen flying through the skies in a carefree manner.
Vanessa disturbed Gawain when she shared a body with Holly and would occasionally allow the deceased Holly to speak, but now that Holly seems able to move among the living world by herself it's unlikely that that will happen again.
Gawain can't help but pity and wish to protect Vanessa when she's hurt or distressed, which is most of the time being as she's alarmingly danger-prone. Vanessa can often be found bleeding in some deserted part of the grounds, presumably after being attacked by Carson or her father the Devil. Yet Gawain is starting to wonder how much of Vanessa's wounds are inflicted by others...

Amanda
Amanda Worthington is a light-hearted and cheerful white witch. Her powers are based on the supernatural (her power source is the sun, though Gawain is currently at a loss to see the connection between the two). Overall Gawain finds Amanda to be a very pleasant, drama-free little lady, much in the style of Glinda The Witch Of The North.
Yet despite her proper demeanor, Amanda is no damsel-in-distress. She's an expert archer who occasionally offers to give Gawain further instruction to supplement his Red Fountain lessons.

Enemies and Rivals

Cale
Gawain and Cale have been engaged in a bitter rivalry ever since the day that Lily died, and they fought over to whom the blame of her death should be alotted.
For a couple peaceful weeks the merman and the young King didn't clash. But starting a few weeks ago, Gawain began to notice that Blossom and Cale were starting to behave like a couple. He was horrified to witness Cale whispering sweet nothings in her ear, walking hand-in-hand with her, and even abruptly kissing her in front of everyone.
Cale's flirtacious behavior so provoked Gawain (how dare that pondscum go near my baby sister?!) enough to attack Cale, and the two fought intensely until their friends managed to drag them apart. Lily has done her best to scold them into amiable behavior (with mixed success), but Gawain still hates Cale with a passion, and the feeling is mutual.
Their hostility and constant fighting pains Blossom deeply, and it also puts a strain on Lily's relationship with Gawain.

Namine
Namine and Gawain do not get along. At all. Gawain's not sure whether it's her flame red hair (so much like Queen Cerise's), her obvious dislike for his impertinant curious nature, the fact that she yells at him most of the time that they're together, or her flat refusal to his offers of help, but he has come to dislike her exceedingly. On Valentine's Day a stray love spell of Jessie's caused them to fall into temporary infatuation with each other, but once the spell broke Namine slipped back into her normal dealings with Gawain-and slapped him for something that was not his fault.
For his part Gawain loves to tease Namine. Gawain knows that he's asking for trouble when he does so but he enjoys it too much to stop, despite the fact that Namine generally responds to his provocation with a magic spell designed to hurt him in some way. Namine is outgoing and hyper if short-tempered, especially with Gawain. Gawain would describe her as 'difficult' but others might see her differently.

Ezra
Ezra's a dark grey/black witch who seems to enjoy wrecking havoc on other peoples' lives. She has made various appearances at dances, competitions, at sea, and even at nature camp. 'Enemy' is perhaps too strong a title to label Ezra with. Although Gawain recognizes Ezra as a cunning, malicious witch who nearly drowned them all when she caused a powerful storm to attack a ship they were on, he has no personal grudge against her. And (unlike his other enemies) Gawain has a sort of grudging respect for Ezra's sheer power and ability to manipulate the situation.
Gawain is curious to know more about this Circe-like girl and her feline Kizu, but the only ones who seem to know anything Ezra are Derrick and Deakin.
