Excuse me, Miss," a voice said, causing Lifa to look up from her magazine. The aisha glared over her glasses at the handsomely dressed camo kougra speaker, causing him to hesitate before continuing. "I need some help finding something."
Lifa sighed. It was always the same thing with every library user. Either they thought themselves better than her, or they were flat out intimidated by her. Still, she kind of enjoyed intimidation, as it kept her precious books safe from harm. She looked the kougra kid over again (just to be sure he didn't look suspicious.) before replying.
Is there any particular book you are looking for?" she asked, pushing a few loose strands of brown hair behind her smaller left ear. As if on cue, the kougra looked around, making sure no one was watching before pulling out a small piece of paper from his pocket.
I need book number 01578 from section 3. It's for a special case my partner and I are working on. It's signed by the chief of the NCPD, along with Judge Hog himself, if that matters." She took the note from him, looking at it and the signatures before handing it back to him.
It looks legit," she said, standing up from her chair. "I'll be back in a moment."
It was more than a few minutes, however, before the aisha came back with a rather small looking book in tow. "Here it is," she said, handing the book over to the kougra. "Be sure to return it within the due date."
Thanks," he replied, taking ahold of the book. "I will." He tried to pull the book from Lifa's hands, but the aisha stubbornly held on, glaring at him once again.
You promise to take good care of this book, don't you?" she asked him. There was a hard edge to her voice as she looked him over once again. He was no punk kid, but the way he dressed spoke of proudness, vanity, and over confidence. Those sort of qualities led to mistakes, which led to property damage, especially HER property damaged. "If you don't," she said, "this book will cost more than you'll ever make in five lifetimes."
I will," the kougra gulped. "My partner will be handling it anyway, and she's usually very good about taking care of things."
She'd better be," Lifa said before finally letting go of the book. She watched the kougra hurry out of the library and away from the crazy librarian before turning back to her magazine. She desperately wanted to find out the truth behind the snowbeast, as recent reports showed that the famed monster may have been a hoax by the bori chief in order to scare his tribe into obedience.
Such was a normal moment in the life of Lifateh; guardian of some of Neopia's most valuable books.
Lifa was born in a normal space station to normal alien parents. Her father worked a normal job aboard a ship that stocked gross food supplies to Neopia (what Neopians didn't know, however, was that contrary to popular belief, aliens hated gross food as much a Neopian citizens do. They decided to sell junk at a high price to gullible people, hoping no one would be the wiser), while her mother worked as a Lit. professor at the station's high school. She was raised in a normal station apartment, went to a normal station school with normal young aishas, and lived what would be considered a fairly normal life.
However, Lifa was not one someone would consider normal.
Unfortunately her short stature combined with her need for glasses at a young age made her a target of every school bully. Having no real friends, Lifa immersed herself in books. Her mother loved books about as much as she did, and so their apartment was littered with books of all genres. She loved every book for what it was: from fiction to non-fiction, horror to romance, fantasy to sci-fi, she loved it all. Her parents encouraged Lifa in her reading, and her father often brought back books from his trips to Neopia, while her and her mother often spent hours together discussing certain books. Though she was often considered an odd child by other aishas her own age, her life was still pretty normal up until her early to mid teens.
By the time she was in high school, both Lifa's teachers and her parents were concerned by her lack of social life. It was then that they started to encourage her to take up other hobby in order to help her meet new people. Being a normally shy and quite girl, everyone was surprised when she immediately jumped onto the idea of martial arts training. To tell the truth, Lifa was tired of people picking on her, and longed for adventure and the chance to prove to everyone she could stand up for herself. Confused, but glad their daughter was willing to try something, her parents agreed.
The martial arts training was only the beginning of her budding career. By the time she was 18 she had already achieved so much in her combat training, as well as good grades at school, and her parents had high hopes for their daughter after college. Yet Lifa had plans of her own. Her longing for adventure and the chance to prove herself became too great for her to handle, and so it came to be that Lifa joined the station's army immediately after her high school graduation.
Things weren't easy at first. Being one of the army's only female soldiers, and a small one at that, she was mocked and bullied even more so than before. Still, after knocking one of her crew mates flat on his back after calling her a rude name, most of the soldiers left her alone after that. Some, however, even grew to admire and respect her, some whom Lifa is still proud to call her first real friends to this day. Yet in spite of some of her hardships (enemies were made, and fellow soldiers lost), Lifa really enjoyed her time spent there, though she often missed home. Still over the years her status in the army grew and grew with each successful mission, going from a common soldier to a special forces captain, and by the end of her term of service she was seriously considering re-applying. Little did she know, however, that her future was already planned out for her. Knowing that the Vitrupets station was looking for a new guardian for their library, and knowing the odd captain's love of books, Lifa was put up for candidacy. Her superiors came to her as soon as her term was over with the new job offer, to which Lifa readily accepted.
Now Lifa has been working there for four years now. She enjoys being around so many books, and has already read a lot of them. She knows the library like the back of her hand, and does her job of protecting her books well. Of course she's had to fight and chase off the occasional thief (which is a is more exciting than it should be), as well as deal with the general public (quite a few have been chased off the property themselves xD). Yet though Lifa misses her family and friends (she still keeps in contact with them regularly, and occasionally visits them on her days off), she enjoys both the excitement and laid back atmosphere the library holds. She wouldn't trade her job for anything in the universe.
Name: Lifateh (nickname Lifa)
Build: Slender and delicate. She's almost always hunched over while reading a book, so she often looks a lot smaller than she actually is. Even when standing straight though she is really small and petite, often being mistaken for a child (something that really annoys her).
Fur color: Deep emerald green.
Eye color: Brown
Hair: Shoulder-length chocolate brown that she almost always wears loose and straight (as people usually grab ahold of pony-tails or braids in a fight)
Clothes: Lifa is a creature of habit, and often sticks with the same outfit day after day: her librarian uniform. Her uniform is very simple, a white blouse with a knee length black skirt. Her skirt has secret pockets where she keeps her weapons, such as her blaster and baton. Her shoes are also pretty simple, as they are just black dress slippers. She doesn't tend to wear a lot of jewelry (as again people usually grab ahold of them in a fight), but she does wear a lightweight gold chain with an A pendant in the center. On her (very rare ;-) day off, she likes to wear something fashionable, yet modest. Usually she puts a nice brown jacket over her white blouse and changes into a brown pair of dress pants or dark jeans.
Likes: Work, books (especially romance and adventure novels), solitude, her petpet Phineus the xepru, coffee (with cream and two sugars), long hot baths (especially after a long day at work), and quirky magazines.
Dislikes: People who misuse, destroy, steal, or abuse books (especially the library's books), rude and disruptive people, pretty much people in general xD (unless they are like her), sports, loud noises (alien aishas are extremely sensitive to noise, as they have six ears instead of two), and bubble gum/any other sticky substance (too many a book has been destroyed by candy and liquids. -_-)
Thank you so much Luna (aka lunas_fate)! Lifa looks really cute. ^.^
Thanks for the cute art Taylor. ^.^
Thank you Jade (aka oxvampyre_chickxo). I love the way Lifa turned out. ^.^
