My Story
(or How I Got My Wings)

Flying...That had always been a dream of mine. Ever since I was very young.

I remember when I first opened my eyes, I looked up at the sky. Then I saw an animal with wings flying through the cloudless night sky. I don't really remember what I was, it might have been a shoyru. Either way, it was flying.

When I saw it flying, I was amazed. I wanted to fly, too. I jumped, only to end up falling down.

What are you up to? A soft voice chuckled. I turned around. It was my mother. She had a dark blue pelt with yellow stars. She leaned over and licked my face.

Have you thought of a name for him? A voice asked. I turned around and saw my father. His pelt was dark green. My mother then answered I was thinking...Lichoni.

Then it's settled. His name is Lichoni.

**********

That was a long time ago, long before I got these wings. Before that happened I was always trying to fly. I was constantly jumping off from high places. I remained airborne for only a couple seconds, then I would fall to the ground and get caught by my mother or father. I remember how freaked out they were whenever I would jump. But they had no idea how badly I wanted to fly.

As I got older, I tried to come up with other ways of flying. First, I tried balloons. I experimented with some random objects to see how many balloons it would take to lift them off the ground. The larger the object, the more balloons it took. That worked for me...until the branches from a nearby tree popped the balloons.

After that, I crossed out "balloons" on my list of ways to fly.

Then I tried flying with a parasol I found. Once again I jumped off of a high place. At first my father was going to try to catch me again, but when he saw me float with the parasol, he was no longer worried.

My father was happy, but I wasn't. I wanted to go up, but instead I floated down. I then crossed off "parasol" on my list.

You've really got to stop that. My father lectured. You really had me worried for a second.

I'm sorry, dad. I appologized. I just really want to fly!

Really? Well, I once heard that if you do a favor for a faerie, It'll reward you. Maybe if...Hey, Lichoni! Where are you going?

To find a faerie! I shouted back at my father as I ran off.

**********

I searched the Haunted Woods for what seemed like days. I guess not many faeries live there. But eventually, I found one. I've forgotten her name, but I remember that she was a fire faerie. I told why I had come to her home, that I had wanted to fly all my life, that I was hoping to get wings if I helped her.

I'll never forget what she asked me to do. She asked me to find some...Torn Fire Gym Socks. I'd understand why she'd want fire gym socks, but torn ones? Well, either way, I searched for hours on end in the marketplace, until I eventually found some. It costed all the neopoints I had in my pocket (which wasn't much), but I got them. I wasted no time in running back to the faerie's house.

**********

I FOUND THE SOCKS! I shouted. The fire faerie walked up to me, accepted the socks, and said Thank you, Lichoni. I shall now give you your reward.

She then tapped my nose. I felt funny for a moment, then the funny feeling went away. I turned around. No wings. Where are my wings? I asked.

They'll appear when you need them. She chuckled. I thanked her, then I walked back home.

But I couldn't help but wonder...was she telling the truth?

**********

When I came home, I was shocked at what I saw.

My mother was lying on the ground, beaten and bruised. She looked like she had been in a fight, which she apparently lost. I had never seen so much blood on the ground before. Mother, what happened? I asked her.

Lichoni... She whispered weakly. We were...attacked by lupes...I tried to fight them, but...they were...*cough*...too strong...they took your father...

Why did they take him? I asked. What did they want?

I don't know...go find him...*cough cough*...go... And then she was gone.

My mother didn't die in vain. I obeyed her final words and I went off to find my father.

I ran, and ran, and ran. I didn't see where I was going, and I accidentaly ran off a cliff!

I thought I was doomed. But then I felt something warm on my back. I turned around and I saw...wings! Made of fire! The fire faerie was right! I shouted. I DID get wings! I then took off into the air before I hit the ground.

It was amazing to fly for the first time. I was having so much fun that I nearly forgot what I had to do. I dove down to find my father.

**********

I eventually picked up his scent, which lead me to a laboratory. As soon as I touched the ground, my wings dissapeared. The fire faerie was right. My wings would appear when I needed them.

I snuck inside and saw other pets in cages. I immediately assumed that this must have been some sort of reaserch facility. But the caged pets didn't seem very happy. I decided to find a way to help them escape.

Lichoni? Is that you? A voice whispered. It was my father. What are you doing here?

To get you out of here. I whispered back. I then tried to undo the lock on his cage, but he pushed me away and whispered Don't worry about me, Lichoni. Just get out of here. Your mother's probably worried sick.

No...She's gone...When I found her she was almost dead. Before she died, she told me to find you.

She's...dead?

Then I finally unlocked my father's cage. There. Now c'mon, let's hurry!

Then some humans entered the room. As soon as they saw father trying to escape, they grabbed him. RUN, LICHONI! He shouted. But I didn't run. I pounced on them.

During the fight I got knocked into a switch on the wall. My head hit the switch, which suddenly caused all the cages to open. The pets ran towards the exit without hesitation.

As our fight continued, my wings appeared once again. I burned the humans, but when I flapped them a couple times the building suddenly caught fire. At that point, the humans ran for their lives. In their hurry to escape, some of the cages got knocked over and pinned my father to the floor.

Get out of here, Lichoni! My father shouted.

No, I'm not gonna leave you! I shouted in protest.

The ceiling looks like it will collapse any second! I just want you to be safe! I looked into his eyes and he looked into mine. I started to cry a little, then I ran for the exit.

I looked back only once as a huge chunk of flaming ceiling collapsed on my father.

DAD!!! I wailed. I was half-tempted to go back to dig him out, but I knew it was too late to save him. I continued towards the exit.

**********

I felt guilty for what had happened. My father was dead because of these wings I wanted so badly. I decided to go find that fire faerie and ask her to take them back.

I want you to take these wings back. I told her, trying to hold back the tears in my eyes.

I'm sorry, Lichoni. She told me. I have a no-return policy. You wanted those wings, and you got them.

You don't understand! My father just died in a fire because of these wings! Can't you do something?

Well...I can't take your wings back...But I can fix them so they will no longer burn anything.

I felt a little bit better upon hearing this. It seemed to ease my burden a little.

I had nowhere else to go after that, so I decided to head to the Pound. I heard that they help homeless pets find loving homes. So I decided to walk there. I walked for half of the trip, but then I became tired and my wings carried me the rest of the way. I soon found out that the fire faerie really DID fix them, because during the trip I accidentaly flew into a bush, but my wings didn't burn it, not one bit. I felt even more relieved to see this.

Once I got to the Pound, I made a friend. A zafara named Dragon. He said he had been in the Pound for as long as he could remember. He had recently tried to escape the Pound to experience different kinds of music, but was taken back to the Pound not long afterwards.

I assure you I wasn't stuck in there for long. Because one day, a human named Sarah came to the Pound to adopt a pet. And not only did she adopt me, but she adopted Dragon as well!

But, wait. The story doesn't end there.

**********

One day, I decided to go find the place where the laboratory used to be. I never really did find out what those scientists were researching. Maybe the burned remains of the building would reveal something.

I was suprised to see that part of the laboratory was still standing. It was the front of the building that had been mostly burned. I also noticed a flock of Karrens and Batterflies roosting in the rafters.

I decided to investigate the back of the building. Maybe it would reveal some secrets. I was a little cautious as I crept though the abandoned halls, because although this part of the building was still pretty much intact, I feared that the roof might collapse at any moment.

Huh? As I continued my investigation, I saw some glass tanks lined up side-by-side. I crept closer and saw some odd-looking creatures inside. Most of these creaures, somewhat embryonic in appearence, looked like two different species mixed together.

Were these...experiments? I asked myself.

I continued my investigation. I saw several papers and notebooks scattered on the floor. Most of them were burned up by the fire, but I was able to read some of them. They were mostly about pets that had lived here. Each page I found had a different pet, information about it, and information about various "tests" they went through.

I was beginning to understand what had occured here. Maybe...they were breeding hybrid pets that were stronger that normal species...

Then suddenly, my ears picked up the sound of feet scampering across the floor. I wasn't alone. I turned around and saw what looked like a creature's tail sticking out from behind an old crate. I quietly crept towards it, and when I was only inches away, I poked the creature's tail.

It yelped out in suprise. I did the same. Then it turned around and looked at me. It appeared to be a korbat, but not an ordinary one. I could tell right away that she must have been one of the lab's experiments.

Her fur was pale orange, with a patch of lavender-colored hair on top of her head, and dark orange-tipped ears. Her belly was light blue, and her wings were lime green. I also noticed she had little claws and plates on her back, so she must have been part bori.

Are you okay? I asked her.

I...I g-guess so. She stuttered.

...I'm Lichoni. What's your name?

My name...It's...Um...I don't know.

You don't know your name?

...No. I remember waking up in a really cold room...but nothing else.

That's all you remember?

Uh-huh. I don't know what I am...or where I am. Do you know what this place is?

...That's what I've been trying to find out. I then noticed that there was one more room I haven't checked yet. I looked at the door and it said "Cryogetic Storage." I had no idea what that meant, so I decided to take a look inside.

What was inside there shocked me so much that I nearly fainted. There were a bunch of pets inside, and all of them were frozen in icy containers. I saw one container that was empty. That must have been the one that the bat was frozen in.

Brr...It's cold in here, isn't it? The bat shivered. This was where I woke up....AH-CHOO!

Gesundheit. Now that I had taken a good look around, I had pretty much gotten a good idea on what was going on in the laboratory before most of it was burned down. I decided to head for the exit.

Wait! Don't leave! The bat called out. I've been alone in here for a long time. But then you came in here. Can't I come with you?

...Of course. I then let her climb onto my back.

Lichoni...Since I don't have a name...could you give me one?

I'd be happy to. How about......Adelaide?

Sure! I like it!

This is Cecilia, my Karren. What most people don't know is that her name means "dim-sighted". And that's exactly what she is. Until recently, she was constantly bumping into things. Normally, Karrens avoid that with their echolocation, but Cecilia can't echolocate very well. What is echolocation, you ask?

Echolocation (eck-oh-low-kay-shun) is a sonar used by animals such as bats, shrews and dolphins. Echolocating animals emit calls out to the environment and listen to the echoes of those calls that bounce off of various objects in the environment. They use these echoes to locate and identify objects, as well as to avoid crashing into them.

But for some unknown reason, Cecilia's echolocation is a little faulty. That was a major problem for her, and it was almost life-threatening! In fact, when I first met her, she was lying on the ground and was severely underweight, probably because she couldn't find any food. She also had a couple bruises on her face, suggesting that she kept crashing into trees and stuff.

After I nursed her back to full health, I decided to buy her a pair of glasses. If she couldn't echolocate very well, she should at least have better vision to make up for it.

And it worked! Thanks to those glasses, Cecilia will never crash into anything again!
