Chapter One
The weather was hot and muggy; Just as she liked it, since it was perfect hunting weather. Storm clouds boiled in the sky, providing very little protection from the heat for her intended target.
She watched the large shaggy Tyrannian Ettaphant cooling off in the water, waiting for it to roll over. Keuv looks around the waters of her home swamp, lifting her spine frill and flashing a pattern of lights. Soon, there were flashes of orange and green flickering for a few seconds before everything goes dark again. She creeps closer to the resting petpet, then with a flip of her orange tail, the entire pack bursts out of the water, rushing the ettaphant.
The large animal swings its upmost head up as it stands as quickly as possible, taking a trunk and swinging a small mangrove tree towards Keuv. The Draikess leaps out of the way, jumping off the trunk of the falling tree and onto a larger dead wood. She skitters up the tree, pausing to count the members of her tribe and judge where to herd the now fleeing animal, "TO THE LEFT!
She leaps from the tree, her side frills flairing so she could glide from tree branch to tree branch, chasing after the ettaphant, which was slowed in the peat and sludge at the bottom of the swamp as they hearded it to deeper waters. With one final leap, she slammed into the side of the side of the petpet, causing it to fall onto one knee. After that, its time was short.
A few hours later, Lightning cracks over the feasting Marshhunters, the wind making the trees around them creak. Keuv, the pack Spotter, yawns, watching the lightshow above her, and lifts a piece of meat to her lips with one of the cuttlefish like arms on the sides of her head. As she chews the meat off the bone, a loud cry escapes one of her pack members as a Tyrannian Krawk, over four times their size, charges to chase them from their prey. Keuv swallows, nearly choking on the bone as she leaps into the tree's. As they run, one of her packmates bumps into her side, "Nice going, Spotter.
Keuv snaps her teeth at the larger draik, the pack's Tripper, "Watch it. In case you forgot, I ended up doing YOUR job when getting the ettaphant to begin with!" She shimmers up the tree and looks back at their attacker. The Krawk had slowed down to a stop as to return to their meat, "Well shoot. At least we all got a full stomach, right?
She laughs nervously as the rest of the pack slows down to a stop. A large gust of wind suddenly hits them, Nearly shaking Keuv out of the tree. She clings to it, and squints her eyes to look into the storm. She gasps as she spots the ocean, "GUYS! We need to get out of here! This is no little Thunderstorm, its a Hurricane! RUN!
The Spotter turns, "Everyone, North north west, head for the mountains!" She leaps branch to branch, sometimes swinging back and forth or catching the wind to fly ahead.
Suddenly, a flurry of wings slams into her face as a paniced bird slams into her mouth, causing her to choke. She pauses, perched on a tree, and tried to spit the large ball of feathers out. Finally, after much sputtering and choking, the bird falls into the rising waters. Looking around, Keuv tries to spot her pack. She raises a paw to shield her eyes from the rising amounts of debree flying around, and looks around for lights. She pants, then gasps as she spots a tornado forming in the direction she had sent her pack in. She charges towards it, "GUYS! TORN-" She coughs, feathers still scratching her throat, her voice lost in the howling of the winds and the roar of the thunder, "TORNAD-AAAAH!
She clings to the top of her tree as the winds try to pull her towards it. She clings tight, wrapping her body around it the best she can as leaves and twigs slam into her body. She manages to sneek a peak, and spots the lights of her pack far from the tornado, and laughs in relief, just before the tree under her creeks, and ends up being pulled into the swirling chaos of the storm.
After what seemed like forever, Keuv finally was spat out by the tornado, and fell through gusty winds towards dark waters. She looks around quickly, panting and spots the river flood plains in the distance before splashing into the ocean waters and sinking a few yards down before swimming back up to break the surface, trying to keep her head above the wild waters and fight against the rip current. She didn't even have the time to notice that she had lost sight of land and was now actually swimming further out to sea, trapped in the maze of constantly crashing waves and ever increasing exaustion. She spots a shattered piece of wood and swims over to it, hauling the top of her body above it to keep her head out of the water, and collapses.
As shadows fill her vision and her limbs turn to lead, thus begins the Adventure of Keuv.
Keuv coughs, water splattering onto the sand as her body is rocked by a steady pair of paws, forcing the water from her lungs. She coughs the water up and slowly tries to stand, sea weed draped over her body. She looks over at her savior, and blinks as a curious face filled her vision, "Erm...
The stranger pokes her on the forehead, "You had us worried there, landwalker..." The silvery blue merdrac perks his side frills, "We found you struggling out in the middle of the oceans, caught in a one of the currents, clinging to a piece of wood, and your head fell into the water as we came to investigate.
Memories of her struggle, Keuv looks around quickly, her frill flaring. Nothing but water, everywhere. She lifts a paw to look at the rocky outcropping she stood upon. The island was nothing more then a sand bar that formed on an outcropping of a sunken, extinct volcano, just large enough for a few animals.. Which ment she was stuck, with no idea where she was, on something that didnt stay above the water surface half the time.
Not to be rude, but... Could you bring me back to my home? Its a river flood plain, North of here..." Keuv looks at the merdrac hopefully.
The merdrac blinks, "There is only the Ices north of here... No "Flood plains.".
The term "Ice" was an alien word to Keuv, who had never had to deal with the cold before, "... Uh... Hot, wet... Lots of trees and mud... Its near the ocean... Big animals, often furry...
Shaking his head, the merdrac smiles weakly, "Not in our Pods territory, we've never seen things like that..." He claps his hands, "Alohua! I'll send a few out to tell her about you, she might know what you are and where you came from. She's a few days south of here.. Usually. She travels.. Others will go looking for what you discribed
Keuv nods weakly, pretending she had an idea who this Alohua was, and lay down, her head heavy, "There was a storm...
Smiling, the aquatic dragon slipped into the water, "That narrows the search a little.. A rather bad one danced around to the west, land to land, weakening and strengthening, before dieing out three days ago. So we know that you've been in the water for at least Three days, which makes it amazing how you've lived this long..." with that, he vanished into the water.
Keuv sputters, "Three Days?!" Suddenly what he said fully registered. She may have been out for more then three days, and the storm hit more then just her home. All she knew was she headed west while floating on a piece of wood. She collapsed, crying, and fell asleep once more on the sands.
Movement suddenly dredged the Marshhunter from her sleep, and she watched as another Merdrac dropped a fish next to her face, "You hungry lady?
She lifted her head to look at the young merdrac, who nudged the fish towards her, "I can get you seaweed if you eat plants..
Keuv laughs weakly, "Thank you.. The fish is fine.." She pokes the fish with her head flipper, trying to recognize what kind it was, before carefully biting a piece off. She suddenly pushed herself up a little and scarfed down the rest of the fish, her stomach hurting from the days without food. The child brought another fish to her, which was ripped up and swallowed in a few quick bites. She then lapped at the water, making a face at how salty it was, "Um... Is there any fresh water?
The child blinks, "This waters fresh, lady. The current keeps it moving, so its always new..
The spotter smacks her lips, "I mean.. Not salty. Land water." She watches confusion cross the merdracs face, and sighs, "Nevermind...
So... Tell me about your pod...
Blinking, Keuv raises a brow, "My pod?
The young Merdrac hauls himself up onto the sand, "Yeah! Your pod, your family...
Keuv laughs, "My pack has about Seven members in it... We're the Melimika pack... Our people are Kerrmakya, or "Marsh hunters".. We control over a hundred miles of territory, and hunt as a team... I'm Keuv, the pack spotter, I spot the prey, preditors, make the hunting game plans while I search for openings... Though, I'm almost big enough to be a Tripper, which knocks the larger prey down to allow the rest of the pack to move in. And what are you? What about your "pod"?
The young draik grins, "I'm Misunida, The chiefs son. We're the Occia pod of the Northern Wash, on the uppermost reaches of the Megapods territo-
EEEOOOOOOOOOOOOAA
The grin melts from Misunida's face, and he looks to the East at large boats, powered by oars, dropped nets and corraled the draiks, "DAD!
The young merdrac tries to flop back into the water but Keuv pins him down, "I recognize those boats... They are Tyrannian Tank ships, they are used by Animal Merchants... They capture people to sell to zoos in other countries.. Misu, stop struggling." She was careful to avoid the sharp spines on his frills, recognizing them as poison injectors, since she had some herself, "The pods swimming away, and someone your size... They'd use you as bait..
Misu froze, then huddled her his new friend, whimpering, and changed his colors and texture to look as much as a rock as possible, burying his face in his paws.
Keuv watches as the ships haul merdrac after merdrac onto their boats, and forcing them into the tanks build into their ships with large poles as to stay away from their spines. After what seemed like forever, they sailed away, the pod scattered, half of them trapped in the net covered tanks. Keuv swallows, lifting her head as she watches them shoo away the few remaining ones, who continued to chase after them long after they left Keuvs sight.
The Marshhunter sits up, trying to spot them again, as Misunida came out of hiding and started barking, trying to get someone to answer, too afraid to leave Keuv's side. Night fell, and no one returned.
Keuv... Wha-what do you think is keeping them?" Misu looks up at her, his eyes wide in fear.
Keuv glances over at him, the edges of her lips twitching downwards, and tries to hide her worry with a forced smile, "They all escaped and are hunting for dinner...
.. Liar..." The boy lowers his head, crying silently, "What do you think they are doing to them?
The swamp dweller sighs, "Honestly.. I don't know... They one time caught one of our pack members.. We followed them from a distance, trying to find an opening. They sold them to something called a "Cer-cus" and we were able to sneak them out from them.. It was a thing where they have things act unnatural for large groups... But they fed and treated their captives well... Your pod should be fine, even if captured... They just need to have someone break them out and they can run awa-.." She looks over at Misu, just realizing that he had little stubby flippers for back legs, "Well, Swim away..." She lays down, "Lets sleep for now... They should be out soon and return to us by day break..
Keuv smiles hopefully, and cuddles up to Keuv, who frowns into the shadows, water lapping at her chin as a cold breeze makes her shiver, feeling doubtful of her and Misu's chances of survival, alone in the middle of the ocean. With a shuttering release of breath, she closes her eyes, resting her head on the child to comfort him as well as to try and stay as much out of the water as she could.
Days melted into each other and, while Misu stayed nice and fat on a diet of fish he could capture, Keuv was growing weaker by the minute, the salt water doing its job to keep her dehydrated. She pants, shivering. She could never get warm enough, could never get enough to drink or eat, and she was developing a hacking cough as liquid rattled in her lungs.
."KEUV! KEUV! Snap out of it!" Misu swam around her, and she flails, suddenly realizing she had wandered into the water and was floating away from the little island. She paniced. Her kind were strong swimmers, spending a lot of their time hunting in the water, but she was sick and caught once more in the current. She let Misu drag her back to the island as she simply tried to stay above water. Suddenly, something grabbed her, and she was hauled onto the back of a large animal.
So, this is the landwalker you were talking about..
Keuv looks up weakly as a huge paw of maroon and blue covers her face, and she felt herself sinking into warmth as darkness covered her, catching only fragments of what was being said as she fell asleep, "We need to bring.. The city... Heal... The pod...".
Finally, only warm bliss filled her, and then nothing.
You awake yet, Keuv?
Keuv's eyes pop open, and she sits up, "Misu?
The young merdrac tackles the Marshhunter, "KEUV!
OOF! When did you get so quick on your fee-.." The draikess blinks as she looks down at the Merdrac, who was floating next to her. A fish swims past her face, and after a few twitches at the corner of her right lip, she screams, thin trails of bubbles escaping her mouth.
A large maroon, creamy orange, and bright blue dragon head with frills pokes its head through the large windows of the room, "My, its been a while since we got a screamer... Go up, there's normal air at the ceiling, but you can breath just fine where you are." Keuv's jaws slam shut as she watches the massive merdrac fill the room, her eyes wide and her breath ragged. She opens her mouth to scream again, and the larger dragon shoves a medium sized squid into her mouth, which she devoured savagely as the giant paw spreds against her chest, tickling her feeler wiskers, "Hows your breathing? Keuv is it?
Keuv nods, swallowing, then takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly, "Much better... How.. How am I under water? And breathing...
Alohuaki blinks, her blank eyes staring at a spot just between the Spotters horns, "Um..... Magic? Nevermind that, its something we've been doing for centuries, though some of the smaller pods have forgotten how to do that since they don't normally make friends with landwalkers, even if they are our distant relatives such as yourself..."
She shoves another squid into Keuvs mouth, and takes a soft purple stone from a pouch she was carrying, grinding it against a stone bowl, filling the water with healing energies and giving it a faint haze, "One of the members of the Occia pod made it here this morning.. Apperantly the rest were sold to Zoo's as trick animals, but her old age made her unappealing to them and she was released... Misu here wouldn't leave your side these past few days... He's taken to calling you his sister. But, he understands you need to go home, and agreed to stay here till we can get in contact with the zoos that bought his pod members and get them released.
Alohuaki, holds a paw out, "I'm Alohuaki.
Keuv takes a finger in her paw, swallowing as she looks at the full size of it, "The chief mentioned you when I first came to after the storm... Oof!" She holds her belly after Alohua poked her with a free finger.
We still need to get a little more meat on your bones before we send home.." And with that, a large chunk of tuna was popped into her mouth, "Now... Marshhunters exist in many parts of the world, but the only ones that live to the north near a river mouth would be in Tyrannia.
Nodding, Keuv takes the rest of the tuna and chews on it, "Lots of Krawks where I live... And large wooly animals. I Think it's called Tyrannia." Alohuaki nods, "We should be able to get you back there in a few weeks." She laughs, "Though I bet you wish you could get home sooner, doing so could make you sicken when you get there. And until then..." and in a physical closer to a sentence, one really fat squid was shoved into Keuvs mouth and the Merdrac vanished out the window, laughing.
..Mrmph murph..."
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHA!" Keuv stood on her back paws, her front wrapped around Alohuaki's head frill as they sped through the water, dipping and cresting in and out of the water. She giggles like she never did before, her heart light. She was going home. A scout had been sent up river to try and spot her pack and, though they ran when they saw the merdrac, they had been spotted.
She leans back and bends her legs as Alohua bursts out of the water again, all four of her wing like limbs spreading to help her glide, before folding as the large draikess skipped across the water like a stone on a still pond. Keuv's back legs and hips burned, not used to standing for such long periods of time. But, her giddiness kept her going for a good two hours.
Eventually, land creeped into their view, while Keuv pants, sprawled across the crook of Alohuaki's neck. She made a sharp whooping cry, and a few deep booms, and listens carefully as they swam upstream. She repeats the deep base calls, hoping for some sort of responce.
Just when she was about to give up, lights flickered on the edge of the water. Keuv perks, flaring her spine frill and flashing lights back, identifying herself. After another bout of lights, the spotter cups a paw around her mouth to amplify her voice, "AHOY!
Ahoy, Keuv!
Quickly thanking Alohuaki, the Marshhunter leaps into the river and swims into the treeline. The tripper rubs up against her shoulder, "What do you think you were doing having an adventure without us?
Laughing, she climbs up into a tree, resting against the trunk, "Beats me.. But for now, it's just good to be home.

Pack: Melimika ("Wise and Bitter little Raccoon")
Pack Job: Scouting and Exploration.
Species names: Kerrmakya , Marshhunters, Swampdragons, Waterwolves, Eagle hunters
Personality: While Marshhunters are Social animals, they normally don't get along with species other then others of their kind. However, because of her adventure separated from her pack, Keuv has grown more trusting of other species that have proven non-violent, and later sets out with her pack to explore the world, with the help of her merdrac friends.

Toph is a Mock-Dart Frog Galleon, a species native to Keuv's homeland. She's named Toph because of the meaning "Little Drum", not only for the deep booming sound like a drum being hit softly she makes when she's not cheeping or Chirruping, but also because she was found sleeping in a drum the Tribe's Head Drummaker was working on. Which is how Keuv got the smaller dragon, since the Head Drummaker is her mother.
While Mock-Dart Frog Galleons are usually around the roots of Mangrove trees and closer to the ground despite having evolved from an aborial race, Toph has a love of heights unusual for her species, and enjoys the feeling of riding on Keuv's back while the larger dragon glides swoops and glides through the air. This enjoyment may be because of her genetic mutation, where she has a a flap of skin between her thigh and upper arm that she can stretch, allowing her to glide much like a flying squirrel.
While Keuv Protects Toph when in the Tribe, Toph prefers to stay in the Tribe lands rather then travel around with Keuv.

The Melimika Pack is a group of Six Kerrmakya from the main Tribe. They are a scouting and Exploration party, and also act as a line of defense against large preditors of the land outside the wetlands inside the cup made by the Broken Rim Mountain range and the ocean. Unlike the hunting parties that go out to get food for the tribe and thus must be large and swift as well as relatively close by, staying within three days of the village, The Melimika often go months at a time without seeing another member of their Tribe outside of the Six. While they don't have a defined leader, Keuv usually calls many of the shots because of her fine tuned Senses and keen sense of strategy.
In the Melimika pack, There is one Spotter (Keuv) who acts as the eyes and ears and creates the attack plans, Two Trippers, who do the main hunting and fighting, And Three Runners, which wear out and confuse prey and enemies.
There are other tiny villages of Kerrmakya scattered among the large Everglade system where they stay when not in the main village or living in the wild, usually having to share a platform or Chickee (Thatched Roof Hut with no walls, often built on Kerrmakya built island or on platforms over the water.) as many of the outpost villages are just small packs that gaurd or cultivate an area, or sometimes even just a single hut or platform left for the traveling packs to rest at.

Keuv's Homeland is a wetland formed in a large, partially sunken extinct Volcano. Where other races of Kerrmakya exist elsewhere, Here is the only place they have evolved into a culture rather then a species. They are also the largest race of Kerrmakya.
While Keuv's Pack, The Scouting Party that goes by the name of Melimika, roams the Entire territory and sometimes outside of the old volcano, the main Tribe is in the north, where the large Marsh Wood tree's grow and the water doesn't rise and fall as much.
South of the territory is the open ocean. A swift, Warm current runs eastwards not too far off the coast, split in the middle by a ridge of mountains off shore, the rocky spires the remainder of the other side of the Volcanic wall.
This ridge and split current actually makes it so, while Hurricanes can sweep close enough to spawn tornadoes and be dangerous, one has never hit the area directly, keeping it from being washed away.
All together, the entire territory, which doesn't include the sharp rocky spires of the Broken Rim Mountain where the Kerrmakya cannot easily venture on, is about fourty miles wide and 100 miles long and mostly wetland and river systems created by the clouds from the ocean's warm current cooling on the mountains and collecting, as well as underground springs that had formed when coral and clam beds grew in the new, warm water, and eventually created Limestone caverns that collected rain water, making the water pure and clean.
This territory is populated by varieties of different species. Turtles, Krawks, Alligators, Snakes, Raccoons, Otters, Lutari, Frogs, Fish, Birds and Insects dominate the land and the islands in the River of Grass and trees. Occationally Wooly Ettaphants and other larger animals not native to the everglade area wander into the wetlands to cool off in the water, which is scarce in the land outside of the Broken Rim Mountains. Here they fall victem to either the occational pair of Spiney Backed Krawk or the Lead Mammals of the area -- The Kerrmakya.
Kerrmakya, often called Marsh Hunters, are a wide spred species, located all over Neopia. However, they are a secretive species with mild chameleon abilities that live in area's few Civilizations are built in. Because of how they hunt in packs, some people call them Waterwolves, but never call a Kerrmakya that to their faces, since they associate the term "Wolf" to the Swamp Lupes that often try to steal their catch out from under them.
Kerrmakya share a common ancestor with the Merdracs, since both evolved from the same type of early amphibious draik. While their poison is not as toxic as the larger, purely aquatic draik, it makes them effecient hunters that use retractable spurs in their front paws wrists to slice the toxin into their prey. However, because of how they evolved, their abilities to change their skin colors and textures is muted compaired to the merdracs, and they never developed Echolocation, since they spend a lot of time on land and in trees as well as in the water.
While longer then a dolphin from nose to tail, Marshhunters are light in build, with squat back legs, and longer front arms. They are naturally Quadrapedal, but are able to stand up on their back legs to fight and manipulate items with thier flexable webbed paws. Their chests have long, stiff hairs, wiskers that feel water movement and for fish that might be in the water. Males have it growing up their necks to around their jaw line, as well as around their legs, But females have wiskers on their chests.
Both males and females have horns, however the types differ by gender. Females have long horns that go streight back from their skulls. The males grow horns simular to that of the musk ox.
Tyrannian Kerrmakya (like Keuv) are normally more skittish then the majority of their species, since they have larger preditors that have developed a natural immunity to their toxins, such as the Tyrannian Krawk, and have to gorge on rare meals of large prey, and protect smaller prey from the Swamp lupes. They sometimes go weeks having to survive on scavanged meat or raiding bird nests during the dry season.
All Kerrmakya have flaps of skin that looks like frill around the legs and stomach area, that spread out and allow them to glide from tree to tree and increase the length of their leaps. Expert Spotters and Bombers, Which consist of younger or lighter pack members, usually female, are known for being able to change direction instantly with little twitches of their frills. The males are larger, and act as Trippers and Maulers, doing the main attack and over powering prey.
When I was younger, at the southern most tip of my home island, there was a dragon named Annie. She had a clutch of eggs that where forever immortalized in mid hatch.
Annie was a building.
I loved that building, even though it was a rather fat, faded, and, admittedly, uncreative looking green iquana dragon, Annie was one of my favorite sights whenever we buy it on boat or by the southern most bridge.
However, Annie was falling apart, her land went up for sale, and she she was delt a killing blow by a rain storm on Aug 4th, 2002. No one ever bought the land, and every now and then, when you go by in boats, you can still see pieces of her laying in the water. Many groups have tried to get her rebuilt, but could never get the backing.
When I found out about her destruction, I was devistated. I looked up pictures of her faded, blobby body and did research for why she was built so the memory could live on.
My inspiration for The Kerrmakya species, and Keuv in particular, stems from the same inspiration that drove her origonal creator to create Annie. While it differs from the source, and I could never get a direct answer to what was true and what was legond made up for the statue, the story stuck in my head.
When Hurricanes were thought to be coming in, Natives of the area would row their boats to the island between two rivers and wait the storm out, since the storm would never hit the island directly, and thus many lives were saved. But, where the two rivers met, they felt a dragon swirlled under the surface of the waters.
This dragon was the protector of this island, and had the ability to control storms.
Now, at first I thought of the merdrac as the protector when I worked at creating them with my friend Fatal_mantis. However, the merdrac was too large to swim in our shallow waters, and would have been captured easily due to their friendly nature.
Taking the idea that they were related, I took the inspiration of the merdrac, the Whale, and went back to its roots when it was more of an otter or Meercat like creature in prehistoric times. Using that as a base, I created the Marsh Hunters.
They are dragons perfect for Florida -- Small enough to hide, able to cross over land or live completely in water, built for warm environments, sails to help keep cool when they get too warm. Everglades, Swamps, flood plains. We are a sand bar covered in grass, trees, and water.
Which, ironicly, is why in her story, Keuv ends up on a small sand bar of an island after getting blasted by a hurricane. A storm ended up what made Annie fall apart, and a storm is what breaks Keuv away from her family.
Eventually, her pack travels to the area around Mindsend Manor, near Neopia Central. Mindsend Manor is a land locked island, much like my home town, and they settle down in the rivers and streams into a much easier life, and move to Dragon point, filling the hole in my heart created by the destruction of Annie.
Immortalized forever as her children who's birth I witnessed as a young child.

Riverwind: Riverwinds are an instrument truely origonal to the Kerrmakya. Crafted out of red clay from just outside the territories, wood from the forest, and the shell of a large, usually elderly or raised by the Kerrmakya, turtle that was part of the winter or summer solstice feast, since the Kerrmakya believe the sun is carried on the back of a Turtle. Because of this belief, the shells are painted in a sun, with a blue sky, a red disk, and yellow rays. The rays are often coated with a thin layer of pure gold, which rubs off with use, making the yellow paint sparkle.
They are a cross between an Ocarina and a Native American Flute, and are difficult to learn how to play since they have two mouth pieces. The sound, however, is hauntingly beautiful, the turtle shell amplifying the sounds so they can travel softly over miles over the rivers, which can be quite eerie when new to the area.
Keuv is a master at playing the Riverwind, having played it since she was a little child at her mothers feet. She often will play as head Riverwind player during the Summer Solstice Feast, also known as "The Day of Sun". Lately, since her pack now moves around outside of the territory more often, she has played for the Draik Clan during the Winter Solstice, or "Sunless Solstice".
Rattler Gourd: The Rattler Gourd is another Kerrmakya instrument. Made out of wood, twine, small stone beads (For both decoration and to make the rattle inside the gourd), a Dried and hollowed gourd, shells, and a single shed rattlesnake rattle, this instrument is used for both as part of a healing cerimony, and in everyday music. The one shown is the unpainted one for just regular music. Ones for medicine have a carefully created pattern of black stripes and red glass beads within the beaded handle in the symbol for Rattlesnake, as well as the Medicine Shield painted on the gourd.
The Rattler Gourd is made in honor of all snakes, but especially for the rattlesnake, which the Kerrmakya milk for their poisons, which has a healing property to the Kerrmakya biology when treated and cured. They also feel that the snake shedding its skin keeps it strong and the rattle makes them tolerant to illness. The instrument is shaken over the sick and wounded to try and ward off the illness with the rattles magic. Some of the more superstitious Kerrmakya carry Rattlesnake rattles in small pouches, or even eat the shed skin.
