i created the sound of madness
wrote the book on pain, somehow i'm still here to explain
that the darkest hour never comes in the night,
you can sleep with a gun - when you gonna wake up and fight?

introductions

what do you think you're doing here...?

you suddenly jump at the sound of a dark, male voice. you turn in surprise as you realize the figure padding out of the darkness is, in fact, a dog.

this is my cave, you understand? no visitors are welcome.

you budge slightly, scowling at the animal. even if he does look strong, you can't help but feel degraded by his tone.

i was just trying to find a place to get out of the rain. i don't mean any harm to you. please let me stay until the storm lets up...

about the dog

______________________

i was brought into the world perhaps a million years ago. seems pretty long for your incomprehensive little mind, huh? believe it or not, for a minor god i am acutally really young. the older guy who came before me, rayhnne, is a whole lot older than i am - old thing won't tell me his age. maybe even he lost count...

when i came, the world was a terrible place, thanks to rayhnne's attempt to toy with bigger matters than he could control. i set things right as soon as i could - by what other than sending a hurricane of my own creation.

rayhnne was raving mad, of course, that i'd stepped in unnoticed and ruined his little plan. i confronted him about it - he acted like a cross child! the drought ended then, and the rains had to come.

i suppose you could call me the protector of your nice little planet, after all, it'd be in turmoil if i just stood by and let that old man take the reins.

the other world needs guides of its own, though. an acquaintence of mine is chikyrah, the gateman of hell. for one thing, i do have to agree with rayhnne - the humans really are a stupid race. it despairs me how lightly they use the expression. believe me, hell is not just some dank hole. it's a bloody city of fire! despite his position, chikyrah isn't an evil creature at all. actually, i struck up a conversation with him when he came by my stream to drink one morning.

Then there's his sister, airyni. she's the keeper of the gates of heaven. incredibly shy though, i haven't met her before...only heard about her from chikyrah. maybe someday we will cross paths?

an unexpected meeting

______________________

on a visit through a city a century or two ago, i was disappointed to see it...deserted. what the humans call spanish influenza, it struck during one of the humans' many wars. as a result, everyone had either moved out to the country in a futile attempt to stamp it out or were off fighting the war and dying of the influenza there.

as i wandered through the empty streets, i felt a sense of hunger and imitated what the stray dogs were doing - eating out of strange cans. while i meandered along, i noticed a scrap of meat on top of one. lightened, i ran along the passage and leapt into it, hooking my teeth into the meat.

then...something was upon me, as i got it. blindly i wrestled, completely covered with manged fur. an alley dog? ...no, this was much, much stronger. after some time we both ran out of energy and lay there, heaving, the meat between us. after a few seconds i peered through bleeding eyes at my rival - she was, in fact, an unnaturally-colored lion with large fangs. a dusty-gray color, but in a bad condition; she was very scruffy and filthy, and her ribs showed clearly. she glanced over at me, still choking with the effort to breathe, obviously restraining from something by the way she squinted her eyes in concentration. was it the need to tear apart the meat, or...why was she looking at me like that?!

..."nice fight you put up there," she gasped eventually.

i blinked. "thanks...what are you doing here? i'm kayvara by the way."

she rose to her feet weakly. "call me dire. i usually drink blood, but there seems to be a shortage of humans lately..."

oh, did she say blood? well, that explained the wary look she was giving me earlier...

i nodded. "so you're reduced to this. i was just passing through here, i didn't mean to take your meal."

dire lifted her claws and slashed the meat in half. "you can have this," she said, offering me the bigger half. i smiled in gratitude and began my meal. i suppose it wasn't exactly what the humans mean by a quality meal, but it tasted good to someone who hasn't eaten in so long. having finished eating earlier, dire watched me with careful eyes. "you're not so bad," she said, and turned back into another alley. "i guess i'll see you around, kayvara."

as it were, i did see here around. we became close companions, and we still go hunting occasionally together...but, i have to say, her diet - being a vampire - is much, much different than mine...
