Welcome to Jerringston's Lab FAQ

Hello, and welcome to Jerringston's Lab FAQ. The Secret Laboratory Ray is really strange: those who don't know about kill themselves trying to learn about it, and those that do know kill themselves teaching those who don't. Well, I'll just be sacrificial and teach those who don't know. I'm Fae by the way. Nice to meet you :) If you have any comments, questions, or..... well, I don't know what else there could be, something, I'll be happy to help, so feel free to drop me a neomail using the button on the left. For info on the petpet lab ray, Princessacrow has a great page. Please remember:

YOU NEED THE SECRET LABORATORY MAP BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN USE THE PETPET LABORATORY MAP!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been getting a lot of requests lately about giving away my lab map. Just want to have this at the top of the page, no, I will not and cannot give you my lab map, nor can any other player. The map costs that much for a reason, so if you want the map, save up like the rest of neopia. For more info, see the Assembling section of the guide

Price Disclaimer
*Please note that these are the averages of my findings, so the prices here are not the lowest on the TP, just the most common. Try buying pieces at these prices or lower. By using that technique, you will save quite a bit on the lab. No matter what, buying pieces individually is cheaper.

Updates

12/9/08

So, prices may seem a bit strange, but there are many people out there who want to rip you off and very few who remain wise. Most of the trading post is full of overpriced map pieces, but I did my best to find a reasonable average. Just don't jump on the offer button as soon as you see a piece with these prices tagged on it. And I added a little something to the limited edition pets section. Happy Holidays!!!

I am so incredibly sorry about the really late update (once again). But prices didn't change that much while I was gone, which surprised me. I just want to remind you that this is my side account, so don't neomail me by doing the hard process of looking up Jerringston, finding his owner, and clicking neomail. I have a button to the left that will neomail the right account.

What is the Lab Ray?

The Lab Ray is a secret ray that a mad scientist created to zap pets into random colors, species, and changes your pets statistics. Once you assemble the 9 map pieces leading there, you can zap one of your pets, once a day, for as long as Neopia (or your account, whichever comes first) exists.

How do I find it?

Basically, it's right here! But notice how it says you need the map? That's what this guide is all about. The Secret Laboratory needs the Secret Laboratory Map. It consists of 9 pieces, all with different price ranges. Once you have all the pieces, go to the link above or to games, then search for treasure. scroll down until you see treasure maps and click on that. The next page should just be a list of all the different maps, so just click on Laboratory. Then you can start zapping your poor little pets who are afraid of turning into frogs. Please note that you can use the ray for your side accounts, but you will have to get a separate map for that account. One map for one account.

What do I search for to get it?

Search for "Secret Laboratory Map". You can also do "secret lab map"; it doesn't matter. Search on the Shop Wizard, Auctions, or Trades. But on the shop wiz, not all of the pieces will come up. Certain pieces are "Unbuyable", or cost over 100k. Auctions and Trades are the only places where you can find those. The prices of all the pieces are to the right. I'll try to keep it updated, as there are many random things in Neopia that effects their cost.

What is the cheapest way to buy it?

I would prefer you buy the pieces individually, or in small trades. Sometimes in my price estimate column, buying all the pieces individually costs a lot more than when buying them all together. But that is only if you buy them all at the same time at that exact price, and also, some users do make them a lot cheaper than others. As for when all of the pieces are bunched together, the owner tends to bump up the price. In order to save on individual pieces, I recommend saving at least 300k, then buying one or two, then save until you have 300k again. That way, you'll never go bankrupt and the time it takes to save more money will allow for deflation to at least some pieces. For more help on saving neopoints, try Atablicryon's page. Another way is by randomly finding it on the floor. Sometimes you can find two in one day, or one in a month. It's all random, and luck.

What does it do?

Settle down for a VERY long answer to a very short question. It can do many things to your pet, so it's lucky that you get to choose which one gets zapped. The Lab Ray can:

-change your pet's color
-change the species of your pet
-change your pet's gender

It can also change your pet's stats. Your pet can:

-gain or lose levels
-gain or lose hit points
-gain or lose strength points
-gain or lose movement points
-gain or lose defence points
-go back to level 1 (if your pet is below level 20)

There's always the chance, too, that it will do nothing. The lab ray can change your pet into a beautiful, multi-million np zombie pet, or change it into an ugly monstrosity that even a newbie could afford *shudders*. You can get a limited edition pet from it, although it's pretty rare.

Can I get a Draik from it? I really want a draik!!!

This has been pretty hard to answer on the boards, because it's so rare. I have heard of some people getting Draiks, Krawks, and of course, Lutaris from the ray. This I do not know from experience, just from actually coming across someone who happened to get a Krawk. This is because it is extremely rare to get one. My advice: don't get a lab map just so that you can get a cheap limited edition pet. This map is just too random for that. Some people, though, have been lucky enough to get many zaps of LE pets. Kougrore, for instance, has been a Lutari multiple times. There are very few colors that a Lutari can be, so when you do happen to get a Lutari zap, you most likely will get either a pink or island one.

Can I choose what it does to my pets?

This is the one thing on Neopets that drives people crazy. IT'S COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY RANDOM!!!!!! My pets didn't even change gender for more than a week. All it did was change stats. That's what separates the paint brushes from the Lab. If you want a specific color on your pet, then you may as well get a paint brush. But if you don't know what color you want or you want better stats, the Lab is for you. The one thing the lab is super good for, is changing stats.

Are there any limitations?

This is a very important question and will help you determin if the lab is right for you. First off, it does not do Ice Boris'. That was a special promotional event for Neopets, and is not offered anymore. The next issue is the color. There are a few popular colors that it does not do. I will list them with their average TP price below.

Baby (590k)
Usuki/Quiguki (800k)
Royal (1.74 million)
Plushie (5 million)
Pirate (6 million)

If you really, desperatly want a pet that's painted any of the above, you aren't going to get it from the lab ray. But if you want to have it zap a cool color in the mean time while you start saving up for that PB, then go right ahead.

What if my level 65 pet is zapped back to level 1?

At some point in your zapping process, your pet will come across a level where they will not go back to level one. This is a highly disputable point, as no one really knows the level at which your pets stop getting zapped back to level one. I, myself, believe it is level 20, but others believe 50. So, if you want to train your pet until it reaches level 51, that may be safe bet. I shall be testing it in the meantime, though.

Is there a time when you can get better results?

No. Once again, it's random. There's no special cheat to get it working better. The mad scientist doesn't know how to fix his ray, so neither would you. Although you can always beat him up real good in the battle dome after a month of bad zaps (that's my strategy).

My pets are only changing stats!

That's okay. That happens to many people. It sometimes takes a while for people to discover the full potential of the lab ray. It could take many months, or just one day for your pet to change in appearence. Just be patient and don't try to strangle the mad scientist in order for him to retire (I tried. It doesn't work). And don't forget to eat your vegetables.

Does zapping affect my painting the pet in the future?

Although it does for the petpet ray, the answer is no. You can go ahead and zap to your hearts cont-ent and still do whatever you like to your pet (i.e. paint, transmogrifcation potion, Coltzan's Shrine).

Do I get any prizes?

Yes. You get around 10k and access to the ray for as long as you keep yourself unfrozen. You also get a coolio avatar (yes, I know coolio isn't a word, but neither is n00b, and yet people still use it)

How do I put the pieces together?

Put all your pieces in your inventory and not your safety deposit box. Then go here. If you are paranoid about a ghost stealing them like me, bookmark that page. That's all there is to it. But don't think about reselling them once access to the lab is gained, as they disappear as soon as you enter the lab for the first time and stay locked into your account. Sometimes though, a glitch may occur, as it did to boobuddie12. After assembling the pieces, they didn't disappear for him. For two years he kept them in his SDB, not knowing that they should be in the non-existent Jelly World by now. Finally, he notified TNT, who then properly poofed them away. If this glitch occurs to any of you, please follow boobuddie12's example and DO NOT try to resell them, as you will find yourself in Iceland.

Are there any special colors I can obtain?

Yes, there are some lab ray only colors as well as some shared with the Rainbow Fountain in Faerieland. Here are the colors that you can't get from paint brushes:

-alien
-chocolate
-clay
-coconut
-custard
-fruit chia (i.e. grape, pea, carrot...)
-garlic
-ice
-jelly
-mallow
-MSPP (Malevolent Sentient Plushie Poogle)
-robot
-snot
-sponge

Yes, I know there's ice, but that's for just about every other species except bori's. And if you REALLY want a fruity chia, a fruit pop at terror mountain should calm you down. But all chia "flavors" are available from the ray, and certain pops are a bit pricey *cough*8 million*cough* at the TP.
