The Dark Age

The earliest memories Sanka retained were those after his mother had been eliminated. Before that he didn't remember much, but he'd been only five at the time, so it could be pardoned. He remembered a bit of course, but it was mainly hiding. He and his brother Sullivan had hid a lot, that he'd never forget. They still hid to this day, but then again, so did everyone. Sully had longed for them to be free, and he had never really understood, but now it was clear as a shiny puddle on a warm spring day. The world was a terrible place, and he was beginning to realize it.

But there was good in the world too, or at least, just causes and he was finally out from his brother's wing and had recently joined them. It felt fabulous to rebel against those that had drove them into hiding for so long. And he lavished every rebellious spray or paint that colored the spotless city walls.

With no father he knew of, their survival depended entirely on his brother's ability to find food and shelter. Sanka was 5 when their mother was hit by a carriage and promptly terminated. He welcomed the chance to start a new life in a new place, neither boys had cared very little for such an insane parent. For a long time he was kept hidden while Sully worked as a simple errand boy to support him. When Sanka turned 15, he began to get restless and joined the revolution, a rebel cause opposing his brother's employer, The Community.

Lost In Time

It was a sunny morning when Sanka first headed out to town that Monday. He was in a particularly good mood too, the girl he had been trying to gain attention from for weeks had finally smiled at him today. Maybe soon he'd gain the nerve to say hello. Light on his feet, he headed toward the market, Monday was grocery day. He was glad Sully finally allowed him to help out with chores. His brother was so busy with his job, Sanka wished Sully would let him work too, but his brother had made it out of the question. Sully didn't understand that he wasn't a kid anymore, but there was no reasoning with someone like Sully. Sanka shook his head and tried to think of something else, someday he would do great things and Sully would finally realize he wasn't a child anymore.

As he picked out the vegetables for supper, he noticed two shoppers whispering behind the rows of corn. He looked quickly away, whispering of all kinds was strictly forbidden, but turned an ear towards them. Sanka had excellent hearing and was able to make out most of the mumbles. He'd heard of the rebel cause and seen their graffiti on the walls. He shuddered to think of what would happen to them if the Community found out they were whispering about it. Sanka didn't think the two men, boys not much older than he, where actually part of the Revolution, but rather wanting to join it. He found himself pining for more information; something about being part of a group fascinated him. He wanted to be useful somewhere and he admired the cause they fought for. Freedom.

As the men turned toward the exit, Sanka hurriedly paid for his purchases and followed them quietly. Perhaps they would unknowingly lead him to further information. A part of him was being eaten inside. Sully worked for the Community, Sanka knew why, but still didn't understand. Sully was wearing himself out to protect him, but didn't believe in the Community's cause. Perhaps if he joined the revolution, his brother would finally see, and they would both be free.

Of course, it didn't work that way at all, Sully had given his ski.lls in exchange for Sanka's safety and Sanka was too naive to realize just what that meant. Perhaps if his brother had been more open with him he'd have understood, but as usual, in an effort to protect him, Sully had left most of the details out and Sanka was always left with more questions and less answers.

Sanka hurried to keep up, they looked horribly suspicious walking at such a fast pace though the streets and alleys, avoiding the sentinels posted at every corner... But just as he hoped no one would notice them a voice rang out and one of the men was thrown to the ground and bound with ties while the other fled. Sanka didn't try to follow him this time, but turned back the way he came and set back towards home. He wished he could have helped, but there was nothing he could have done. The poor fellow was on his own now. He remembered well the face of the other however, so not all hope was lost. He would try to gain information if he saw him again.

You're pretty quiet this evening.. . Sanka didn't respond to his brother's remark, he was lost in thought, but didn't wish to speak of it. It would be the first time too, he told Sully everything, but he knew Sully would disapprove of his minding to join a rebel cause, and he knew all too well why. But then again, had sully not been part of a rebel cause himself? Sanka shook his head and replied with a half smile; She smiled at me today you know.... Sullivan knew that girl wasn't at all what was on his little brother's mind, but wishing to respect his space, something which Sanka didn't have too much of, slapped him on the back and grinned Way to go Romeo. The rest of the evening was quiet, but not unusually so, both boys had the habit of falling deep into thought and it went by as usual.

When Sanka woke up the next morning Sullivan had already left. Sanka hated himself for keeping secrets from his brother, but if he said a word, his ambitions would be crushed. After all, it wasn't fair for Sully to keep him sheltered like this, for his good or not. Determined, he set off to find the man he'd followed the day before. It was a few hours before he saw him. Beat up and lying against a wall, he hadn't gotten away after all. Sanka knew the man had been left where he'd been caught as an example to others who might think of defying the Community and joining rebel groups. There seemed to be no one around at the moment, and Sanka approached the man carefully with a gourd of water. But the boy, for he was not much older than Sanka, would have none of it... run while you can he whispered before falling into a coughing fit. Sanka knew better, but he couldn't leave the poor guy there. Glancing nervously around, he dragged the unfortunate soul to a safer area and tried to ask him about the Rebel group had had overheard him describing the day before.

But the boy would have none of it and denied having spoken of it. Sanka understood, the Community had gotten though to him. He was disgusted of their ways and left the buy where he sat; hopefully he wouldn't get caught for this. Sanka sighed; his adventure seemed to have come to an end before it even started. He sighed. He longed for the days when his brother and he belonged to a group called "The Voice". The Voice had started Sanka's training and he had successfully completed the 2 years of a 5 year program before the Community discovered the little rebel group and reduced it to dust. It was after that that Sully had been taken in by the Community and Sanka had never been allowed to do anything after that. It made him furious, but there was little he could do about it. He had always relied on Sully for direction and leadership.

As though he had read his thoughts, a shadowy figure emerged from behind him. Felling trapped eh? I can help. Sanka's heart skipped a beat as he jumped a complete 180 to face the one behind him, his mouth went dry, had he been saying his thoughts out loud? There's no cause for worry the stranger whispered softly I saw you taking with the boy back there, you're against the community aren't you? So are a bunch of us. Follow me, I'll show you. Sanka hesitated, could this be a trap? His curiosity got the better of him, and the stranger seemed honest enough.... Sanka nodded and the two disappeared in the shadows.

.................

Hiding almost unconscious in a muddy ditch under the pouring rain, Sanka managed to smile to himself. It had only been a few months since he'd joined the rebel cause, and he was already captivated by it. In the middle of the action, he knew he was helping fight for what was right. Freedom, freedom for all. It was harshly paid of course, (he thought of the meager meals of hard bread crusts), but it would be worth it if once children were free to play in the streets and poor folk able to keep the little they own.

He shivered in the darkness, it was raining and cold. The rebel cause had been hit hard, and been overrun. It hadn't been planned to fight today, they been ambushed by the Community and had barely escaped alive. They'd been called to retreat immediately after the fight began and he and the other rebels had split and run in every direction. He'd been hiding in the ditch for hours and wondered it it was safe to come out yet, he hoped the others had gotten out all right. The rebels numbers were already desperately low, they couldn't afford to lose a single member, especially those who could fight. He was hesitant, but he couldn't hide forever, slowly he got up and stumbled back to where the ambush had taken place. It was dark, but even that couldn't hide the horror he saw..

Sanka fell to his knees as his eyes filled with tears, he'd never experienced anything like this before. He'd been protected all his life, and the reality tore him in two. He friends were strewn about torn and barely life. For others, it was already too late. In his shock, he didn't hear the scream, or rather, realized it belonged to him. He knew he should help, but he couldn't move, paralyzed with disbelief. The Community's victory bugle snapped him back to reality. There was nothing he could do but run, they would be returning. He helped up one of the wounded soldiers and together they disappeared onto the night.

Say something I'm giving up on you.
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you.
Anywhere I, would have followed you.

and I, will will swallow my pride
you're the one that I love
and I'm saying good-bye

Imaginary - Evanescence

I linger in the doorway
Of alarm clock screaming monsters calling my name
Let me stay where the wind will whisper to me
Where the raindrops as they're falling tell a story

In my field of paper flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me

Don't say I'm out of touch
With this rampant chaos, your reality
I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge
The nightmare I built my own world to escape

In my field of paper flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me

Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming
Cannot cease for the fear of silent nights
Oh, how I long for the deep sleep dreaming
The Goddess of imaginary light

In my field of paper flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me
