Where the sun never shines: Dele's story

Roots stick out like skeletal arms in a cemetery, their goal to trip you and drag you under. It's sad, because I can't tell the difference between roots and skeletons anymore. My hoof kicked something hollow yet strong; I hoped it to be just a log and nothing more. However, I saw over the forest's makeshift graveyard, so probability rested on the remains of trespassers.

I was pretty useless for the job, I had to admit. An overseer needs to be able to see. Which was something I lacked. A faceless Bumble, one of the many species in Guardian Fushigibana's forest. While the other Bumbles had jobs such as food gatherers and warriors against the meaner residents of the forest, I was given the high rank of an overseer. The forest residents had their rightful doubts on whether a blind, stumbling Bumble could uphold her position. That was four years ago, though, when I turned the age of job appointing, two. Doing fine, now, I suppose...

History

Dele was born as the runt of a litter of seven Bumbles. The fact that she was the runt, and was lacking eyes and a mouth, was enough reason (at the time) to leave her to die. However, Fushigibana, the great Queen of the forest, refused such act to take place, and saved her life. Her mother, Iris, was banned to the Swamp to live out her days for attempting to end the life of her young. Dele and her siblings were brought to live under protection of Vennila, until adulthood.

Dele was given special attention from Vennila, and was the only one who needed protecting. Her siblings saw her as a weakling who would bring nothing but trouble to the forest. While they made no attempt to physically hurt her (most of the time), they shunned and verbally abused her, to the point where they were sent to live with other Bumble clans.

When she was a year old, on one breezy autumn afternoon, she wandered too far and lost her way. Bouncing aimlessly, Dele ended up at the edge of the forest, on the borderline of the village. Unknowingly to her, a boy noticed her presence and, against the rules, followed her as she attempted to make her way back home. By the time she made it home, the boy had perished, and she was to blame. She was prohibited to travel anywhere without Vennila, who was then appointed as her legal guardian.

As she grew, and the day of job-appointing crept up, there were many doubts swirling about her. The blind Bumble, literally bumbling around, was to be given a job in helping the forest; something many thought she was incapable of doing.

At first, it was painful. It gnawed at my bones, my soul. Lonesome is never taken warmly at first, if not at all. It takes a lonely soul to bear it; any other would turn mad after the first hours. Which, even though it's denied, is why I was chosen for this fate. A loner from birth, I guess they figured me perfect for the job. My blindness was just a plus, I overheard one day. I can't be afraid of what I can't see, they figured.

Except, I've learned that you can believe in what you can't see. Like that creature that is said to lurk in one of the caves deep in this forest (I know I heard it once, but I keep that to myself). If I can believe in what I can't see, can't I be afraid as well? They treat me like I don't know what I do, but I don't mind. The day I found out what I was actually protecting, the aching feeling returned. Something wasn't right, I already knew, but knowing what it was, was... I had hoped that I was wrong.

I know the difference between night and day, most of the time. The sun beats down on my back when it's daytime, and there's a kind of cold warmth at night. At least, that's what Rhain tells me. What does this have to do with anything? It reminds me that I'm not as helpless as everyone else thinks.

I'm a happy hermit. Now, at least. The past few years were tough. Now, I find the skeletons to be comforting (and not bringers of nightmares). I've finally come to the conclusion that I am a loner, and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm at peace with myself.

But then again, those were my teenage years, and everyone has that teenage angst at some point. All I know is that something is really wrong, and I'm the only one who can stop it.

Chapter One: Clandestine Thoughts

With every day passing, it gets colder. Some days, the sun doesn't rise. Winter is arriving; the worst time of the year. I can't tell night from day, and on top of that, the snow is a nuisance. My antennae brush against a leaf, declaring the edge of my domain. I spin around and bounce back to my nest, following the scent of the evergreens I used to construct it. On the way, I hear a slight hiss and the unsettling of a bush. I don't pay any mind to the sounds, and find my nest, settling down in it.

You know it isn't time for resting, right, Dele? a breathy voice hisses in my ear. My nest shifts slightly, and I wiggle to rid it of the creature that was perched on the edge. Come on, Dele. I'm going to help you today, so you kind of have to get up.

I groaned and attempt to turn over, but I have to admit, I was comfy. How late is it? I ask the lizard, whom of which was still holding on even after my tries to shake him off.

He pauses for a moment, and I guess he's looking at the sky. I would guess it's the middle of the day, the reply is. I jolt out of my nest blindly, tripping over a stray rock in the process. Flat on my face, I hear the lizard's muffled chortles.

Not nice, Rhaingo, laughing at the blind Bumble, I chide, and slowly rise back to my feet. The middle of the day, I sigh. How did I not wake up until now? I work my way over to a large rock to the left of my nest.

Resting on the rock were assorted berries, brought to me without fail by Rhaingo, since he knows the best spots where berries grow. I can't see them, of course, so I just blindly go at them. Five today. I gulp them without swallowing, starving due to the excess sleep. My hunger satiated, I listen for Rhaingo. Then, I feel a scaly creature climb onto my back, and end up on my head. Come on, then, Rhaingo commands, We are to go to the Forest Kingdom today. We've to be there before sundown.

My hearts began to beat rapidly. We were to go to see the Royal Court? How come I didn't know? How will you know whether the sun has gone down if the sun isn't out? I asked the lizard.

He replied a meek, That's why we have to hurry.

Five today. I gulp them without swallowing, starving due to the excess sleep. My hunger satiated, I listen for Rhaingo. Then, I feel a scaly creature climb onto my back, and end up on my head. Come on, then, Rhaingo commands, We are to go to Faerieland today. We've to be there before sundown.

My hearts began to beat rapidly. We were to go to see the Royal Court? How come I didn't know? How will you know whether the sun has gone down if the sun isn't out? I asked the lizard.

He replied a meek, That's why we have to hurry.

Rhaingo becomes my eyes as we navigate the Haunted Woods to reach Faerieland. Although the lizard is nervous about cutting through the woods around the Gypsy Camp, I have no second thoughts. The berries sit like stones in my stomach, and regret spreads like fog in my mind about not chewing thoroughly.

Whenever we come across a dead end, Rhaingo insists on us going back and taking the scenic route. I ignore him and steer towards another way to go, his pleads futile.
What about the... the... gypsies?! Rhaingo cries abruptly. That must mean we're at the edge of their camp, and I shrug. They're nice. Sometimes, if they see me, they give me treats.

Rhaingo gasps, and I feel his hold on my ear lighten. You let them feed you?! he pants. What if it's poison? I hear him mimicking someone choking, and shake my head slightly to stop him.

I sigh. If it were poison, would I be here now? I challenge. Without warning, I feel like a thousand lightmites are attacking my head at once, as if it were brushed with honey. Instinctively, I thrash my head wildly, until I hear a satisfying thud on the forest floor.

From the location of which I heard the thud, comes a sigh. Rhaingo starts to climb back onto my head; when he sits between my ears, he starts yelling. What was that for? he demands.

Continuing walking, I ponder. Didn't you bite me? I ask. He is silent, but after a while he answers. I'm hungry, and wanted to see how gnorbu taste. Find me some food. We continue walking in silence for a few hours, until we come across a berry bush and Rhaingo eats. I choose not to eat, because when I think of food, the berries churn in my stomach.

None yet. Change that?
