It was early morning, still cold too. That's what I remember when a pair of hands picked me up out of the grim of the alleyway."
I had been born on the streets, lived in them, grew up in them to my late puppy years. What else was there to do? I never knew my father.... and my mom? She left for another fling and I never saw much of her after that. It didn't really matter to me."
I guess when you grow up in a world that shows you no love, you have no love for it either. I taught myself how to live, how to survive the dangers of street life and I was pretty good at it. I owned the streets, I was too young to think anything ever bad could happen to me. And being so foolish, I learned my lesson the hard way.... and saw the car too late."
The impact hit me on the left side. I don't remember the hospital where I was taken but they cleaned and mended me the best as they could. After everything was said and done, it had taken both my left eye and foreleg up to the elbow. It left my right eye forever scared. If life was hard for me before, it became much worse. I escaped their care as soon as I was well enough to walk or hobble since I only had three legs to spare now. I didn't want to go to any pound, didn't want someone carrying for me. I could do that. I retaught myself to walk, to be able to see despite my physical ailments. I would not take any handouts.... no matter what."

That's when that morning came, when the hands picked me up and held me close. I wanted to bite and struggle from her grip but it was so warm and I felt safe within this stranger's hold. I let her take me from the only home I had ever known... and I was happy to leave it behind."
The first thing she did was give me a bath, scrubbing away the mud and grease from my fur. She combed, brushed and dried me but my fur wouldn't stay down, definitely not the mop I had for hair atop my head. Guess it was too many nights rolling in mud or standing out in the rain and snow. She only laughed, rubbing my head as she realized under all that muck she had cleaned off, I was strawberry underneath with very odd green markings across my fur."
Without even realizing it, I had an owner and a friend for the first time in my life. It wasn't nearly as terrible as I had thought it would be. crazy_bytail or just Bytail, yup... a girl with a love for odd things. She named me Hidden_Dream, Hidden for short because she said she had seen a wisp of me in a dream of hers. I loved her as only a pet can love and she loved me without pity for my blindness or the unbalance of my paws."
I soon met other pets of hers. Family members she had saved, adopted or found. Watcher scared me a little when she came to the family but she fit, like all of us. Each misfits in their own way. It was much later after the four family members and our owner had settled in when I got my first petpet. Bytail put a dark bowl of water before me, a pale green fin swirling around in small circles on the water's surface."
It was a Nuranna she told me. In his shadowy bowl, he grinned at me and continued to circle. I love fish, love to watch them swim in their own little worlds. I named the little guy Berry."
After all that has happened to me, I am content. My physical looks no longer bother me and I get around as well as anyone else. Beware, I can play a mean game of tag. I'm still young by far, not interested really in guys as anything but friends. And that's the story of Hidden Dream, I do hope I didn't bore you too much with my little tale.
