It's a beautiful day in the misty mountain forest, and you find yourself travelling through the trees on a beaten path. After a long, tiring hike up the hillside, you come to a crossroads. The fork to the right clearly leads deeper into the heart of the forest while the one to the left seems to meander and mysteriously fade into the brush. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, you decide to take the winding path to the left. The road twists and turns through the woods around giant oaks and bubbling brooks. Finally, after what seems like hours of walking, you notice an enormous tree that seems to be partially uprooted. The giant roots are thick and gnarled and the trunk itself is probably close to ten feet in diameter. You stare at the giant in amazement and then decide to further investigate. How did such a great tree get pulled from the earth? How old is it? These questions and more fly through your mind as you examine the wood.
Right as you reach out your hand to carefully touch the rough bark, a rustle in the brush causes you to turn around sharply. "W-who's there!" you call out into the seemingly empty forest. To your surprise, an indigo Lupe slinks out of the trees. He has been watching you the entire time, invisible among the branches to your distracted eyes. He moves closer, as silent as a ghost, and keeps his red eyes fixed on you. You should be scared, but something about his friendly face and the fluid way he moves puts you at ease. He suddenly stops right in front of you and sits down on the forest floor, neatly curling his sleep tail around his feet.
So.. you're guest." His voice is soft and calm, and you almost don't realize that he knows you by name. "I heard you coming through the forest but I never thought you would end up here. I suppose I will show you around..." his voice trails off as he stands up and turns, beckoning with his powerful head. "..if you'd like."

GurthHu is a complex individual. At first, he appears quiet, aloof, and almost a little scared. However, as one befriends him, GurthHu will blossom into a fiercely loyal companion. In his youth, GurthHu was wild and made rash decisions. Now, due to many years of experience, he has learned to be patient and think before he acts.

A long, long time ago in 2004, I created little GurthHu as a blue Lupe. He was so cute! I loved that he looked like a wolf and the color of his fur was the perfect shade of periwinkle. He was one of my favorite pets from the start.
GurthHu looked good as a blue Lupe, but I had other plans! The first time I ever saw a mutant Lupe, I knew I had to have one! I started saving up for a Lupe Transmogrification Potion and eventually I bought one and used it to transform GurthHu into the beaufitul mutant he is today. GurthHu has many different personalities and designs since his creation, but this new one is my favorite. I am still working on the background story and am drawing more artwork every day!
In 2007, Neopets underwent an artwork makeover. I excitedly dressed my newly converted pets, but when I got to GurthHu, I had the option to convert his artwork. I had already converted my other mutant Lupe and mutant Usul and was not happy with their new mutant artwork, so I decided to keep GurthHu unconverted. I know that this makes him more 'valuable' and I could probably trade him for any converted pet I want, but to me he will always be priceless and I would never trade him or give him away.
I bet you are wondering how GurthHu came to be the protector of the forest? Well it all started in the beginnings of time...
Long ago, there was a planet forming in the corner of the galaxy. This world was still young and it's lands were freshly sculpted from magma and rock. One day, four faerie sisters of Everae came upon it. These faeries were Aurae, a light faerie, Fleurae, an earth faerie, Tallulae, a water faerie, and Spirae, an air faerie. The sisters were fascinated by the developing planet, and took matters into their own hands. They created an atmosphere and a sun, brought life to the landscape with flowers and trees, and forged rivers and mountains. Finally, after days of hard work, the faeries stood back and admired their work; their perfect world, which they named Earth, was complete. All that was left was creating a population.
The sisters spent a long time quarreling over their Earth's first inhabitant. Would it be a faerie, like them, or a creature with elaborate wings and fanciful features like those native to Everae? Would it be wise and all-knowing or naive and free to make it's own mistakes? Finally, the faeries agreed; they would birth a simple creature unlike any from their home planet. They named this first inhabitant GurthHu, a name fit for a mortal that meant "Death Dog".
In his early days, GurthHu was spoiled and lavished by the four sisters. They made him a home under the roots of a giant tree and grew bushed filled with delicious berries for him to eat and wound a sparkling stream through the forest for him to drink from. He spent his time racing with the butterflies or taking naps under the shade of the trees. Life for GurthHu was perfect and, in his innocence, he never thought to ask for anything. The sisters were also perfectly content, living blissfully for many years in their new utopia.
One day, however, word came from Everae that the sisters were needed to help in solving a problem. The four faeries were curious, so they sent Spirae, the oldest sister, back to their home planet to get more information. When the air faerie arrived at Everae, she was greeted in a panic by her brothers and sisters. A planet called Humana was nearing a black hole and it's inhabitants were crying out for help. The faerie council did not know what to do because there was no room on Everae for the Humans, as they were called. Vellrae, the youngest member of the council, made the decision to have the Humans and their beasts sent to a new planet, and the GurthHu's world was what they had in mind. Spirae wanted desperately to make the right decision and save the Humans, but she was worried about what her sisters and GurthHu would think. After two days of pondering, Spirae finally made the decision to allow the Humans to live on her Earth.
The Humans rejoiced and were promptly moved to Earth, bringing with them their creatures and tools. GurthHu was scared to meet the new people, so he stayed deep in his forest, hiding in his den. The sisters watched as the Humans settled on the barren stretch of land inbetween the forest and a large river. They built structures and hunted their animals and slowly began cutting down the trees on the edge of the forest. Fleurae wept for her trees and the animals and decided that the selfish Humans must be stopped. She started to bloom trees and bushes filled with fruit and vegetables for the Humans to eat, but they ignored them and continued to kill. She created caves for them to live in, yet the Humans preferred their wooden buildings. The faerie finally ran out of ideas and spent her days worrying about the health of her Earth.
Then, one day, the faerie sisters came up with a brilliant plan. They went deep into the forest to GurthHu's little hollow and offered him a proposition: if he would swear to spend his days protect the forest from the Humans, they would give him the gift of immortality. GurthHu, eager to please his faerie mothers, accepted their blessing. They used their powers to grant him abilities that would help him, like the power to help the plants regrow with his breath and the ability to purify the streams with a touch of his paw. Finally, they tied his spirit to that of the forest; that way young GurthHu would suffer as the forest did and feel its sadness. The sisters believed that this connection would keep GurthHu from going back on his word.
GurthHu's actual family died long ago when he was a young pup, but for the past few years, a girl and her other Neopets have been taking care of him and GurthHu has begun to consider them his family. Here is a little bit of information about the members of his little 'family' and his relationships with them.
ZurtisZurtis is like GurthHu's younger brother even though they appear to be the same age. Zurtis is wild child and does everything with reckless abandon. GurthHu feels responsible to help Zurtis when he gets into trouble, especially since the Zafara's owner took GurthHu in and cared for him in a time of need. Despite Zurtis's actions and unpredictability, GurthHu trusts him completely and would do anything for him. |

AishaAisha is Zurtis's girlfriend. GurthHu does not know her as well as he knows Zurtis, but he still considers her a part of the family. Aisha is sweet but sometimes she gets too involved in others' business and this can get on GurthHu's nerves. |
