For some newbies, it is very hard to find help! When you first start
playing neopets, the whole world of neopia may seem so confusing and possibly
even overwhelming. You see users with many painted pets, with expensive
galleries, avatars, and trophies, as well as beautiful lookups. Then you look at
your account and wonder How am I ever to get where they are? Well do not
fret, my friend, for I am here to help you out with every aspect of the site! I have decided to spend my spare time on trying to cover everything possible just
for you! So pull out a pen and paper, and get ready to take notes, for I am here
to reveal to you all of my neo wisdom!
A little note before you read: I made this page as detailed as possible. I did my best to give you every bit of information I know. Therefore, this guide isn't directed to those that don't seriuosly want to learn more. I understand that many newbies won't have the patience to read all this. But I made this page for the ones that do. I hope you enjoy the page, and please neomail me if you have any comments/suggestions!

Earning Neopoints
Here on neo, the currency is neopoints, also known as nps. So to get what you want, you need to learn how to earn them! There are many helpful pages out there that include guides on how to get a certain amount of nps a day playing games. I will give you a quick overview on all of the ways you can earn nps first, and then at the bottom of the page there will be links to further help you. :)
*Ways to Earn Nps*
1. Playing games. This is a slow way to earn nps but we all have to do it at one point in our neo-lives. To find the games you can play, click on the games link on your sidebar, located between Explore and Neomail. Clicking there will take you to the games room where you can choose to play the Featured game (which gives you double the neopoints you normally would when playing this game), Action Games, Puzzle games, or Luck/Chance games. I suggest staying away from the Luck/Chance games for now.
On the neoboards (which I will get to later) if you go to the games board you will usually see a topic called "10k a day". This is a fun way for users to earn nps playing games, and if you go there the first post usually explains how it works.
I also suggest you play some games that don't open in a new window like pyramids, cheat, NeoQuest 1 or 2, Cliffhanger, and many others, because it increases your chances of getting a Random event since you are loading the page during each turn rather than playing in a new popup window flash game where that doesn't happen.
2. World Challenges. You can play games against other users and earn nps for playing the game, as well as maybe winning a map piece. You can earn three a day. Your choices are to either collect all of the map pieces of that set and redeem them, in hopes of getting a good prize, like a paint brush (which is rare) as well as possibly getting a cheap prize. Your other option is to sell them in your shop, trading post, or auctions. I will cover those in a section. For further information on the world challenges visit the World Challenges link at the bottom of my page. :)
Something important to remember is that there are 20 pieces needed to complete one map. So if you are buying or selling, since the trading post only lets you put 10 items in a trade at a time, you would bid/have the buyer bid half of the sets worth on the two trades of 10 pieces each. For more information visit the Trading Post section, or neomail me and I will be happy to clarify this for you!
NOTE: It has come to my attention that someone did not receive their World Challenge map piece because they did not clear their map. I am not sure what this means exactly because I do not participate in the WC but if you do get into this I suggest you ask the Games board.
3. Restocking. Once you get more familiar with the site and its items, try restocking. Restocking is when you go to a shop and buy something that you can sell for profit. Not all items in the neopian shops are profitable, so try to get familiar with what items are profitable for yourself and what aren't. At the bottom of the page there will also be a great petpage that will help you with restocking.
4. Stocks. Just like in the real world, Neopia has a stock market. Once you have earned a good chunk of nps, you may decide to invest in something in hopes of making more. I personally have little experience in the stock market, but others neopians (a word for neopets players) have made millions in the stock market alone. Since I am not experienced in this department, I shall provide you with yet another great petpage located at the bottom of the page.
5. Sniping. Sniping is a term you will most likely come across during your time on neopets, hopefully you won't just hear it from other users, but you yourself will say it too! Sniping is when you use the shop wizard (aka shop wiz or sw) to search for an item that is expensive, and you get a really good deal. (called a snipe). Some items that are popular are paint brushes and secret laboratory map pieces. To snipe a paintbrush type in "paintbrush" and then select "containing phrase" A page will then load giving you a list of shops. Keep hitting refresh until you see one for cheap and go to that shop and buy it quickly! Sniping is a competetive way to earn nps, as well as world challenges and restocking. It takes skill, practice, patience, and a little luck. But, do not be discouraged, for if you are good enough then it well worth it. You can also become shop wiz banned. This means that you will not be able to seach for items for a while. But do not fret, for it does not last forever!
6. Maps. Some people like to collect map pieces to make a full map, and then redeem them in hopes of getting good items worth more than what they paid for to recieve the map. The possible maps to complete are Original, Spooky, Space, Treasure, and Laboratory. I will go into detail of the Laboratory Map(aka lab map) later. There is always risk that you will pay more for the set than what you receive from redeeming them. If you have a complete set, go to games, puzzles, treasure maps. Then click on the text link of the type of map you have completed.
7. Nerkmids. Someday you may come across a nerkmid one way or another. These can be found around the site in random events, user shops, trades, or auctions. A list of all the nerkmids are:
~Average Nerkmid
~Basic Golden Nerkmid
~Basic Platinum Nerkmid
~Golden Nerkmid X
~Golden Nerkmid XX
~Good Nerkmid
~Lesser Nerkmid
~Magical Golden Nerkmid
~Magical Platinum Nerkmid
~Normal Golden Nerkmid
~Normal Platinum Nerkmid
~Platinum Nerkmid X
~Platinum Nerkmid XX
~Super Nerkmid
~Ultimate Nerkmid
~Ultimate Nerkmid
~Ultra Golden Nerkmid
~Ultra Nerkmid
~Ultra Platinum
Nerkmids are like a token. To use them you go to shops and then the Neopian Plaza. *MORE TO COME ON NERKMIDS SOON* (cause this is really all I know) :P If anyone knows any other ways to make neopoints that is not listed here, please neomail me. Neopia is a big world with lots of opportunites, and it is possible that I have overlooked some things.

Pets
Okay. Pets. We all have them, and they love us. I am sure when you created your first pet, you realized there were some limited edition pets, and even two restricted ones! What does this mean you ask? Well, limited edition pets means that they can't be created anymore. The only time you can create a limited edition pet (aka: LE) is when it's that pet's day, but LE pets aren't always released on thier pet day. You can obtain them many other ways which will be explained later. There is one LE pet that will never be released on it's pet day, and that is the Draik.
How to get a Draik One way to get a draik is by buying a very expensive draik egg and taking it here. The types of draik eggs are Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red. They are very expensive but if you work hard you can get one. This is not the only way to get a draik, the other is using a transmogrification potion, a morphing potion, or the lab ray (rare). These will be explained later. Restricted Pets
These are pets that must be specially created. Krawk and Grundo. I'll start with the cheaper one, Grundo. How to get a Grundo To get a Grundo go to explore and then the space station. Near the bottom you will see the words "Adopt a Grundo". Or you can just click here. Then you enter the agency and create one! How to get a Krawk
These are harder to get than the grundo. Like the draik, there are a few ways to get a krawk. One is to have a krawk petpet attatched to your active pet. Name it something and then visit the fungus cave in Krawk Island, or just click here. Have your krawk eat some of the fungus and then you have a krawk! For further explination of how this works, visit the krawk petpage info below. Another way to get a krawk is by using a transmorgrification potion, a morphing potion, or the lab ray. These will be explained later.
Petpets
Aww, these cute little creatures can be given to your pet so that they can have a pet of their own! You can find them pretty much anywhere, and at the bottom of the page there will be a link to the directory of all the petpets found in neopia! You can also paint your pets with a petpetpet paint brush. Or zap them with the petpet lab ray (both will be covered later). People usually like to buy petpets that will match their pet, just cause it looks good on the pet lookup. :)
PetPetPets
Yes, your pet's pet can have a pet. Thus, why it's called a petpetpet. These look like little bugs and can be very frustrating sometimes to attatch to your petpet. What you do is have your pet with the petpet you want your petpetpet attatched to as your active pet. Next go to your inventory where your petpetpet is at and refresh! I suggest that you have a lot of junk items in your inventory so that if you have a random event that steals an item, it will be less likely to take your beloved and hard earned petpetpet! Sooner or later, your petpetpet will attatch to your petpet and horrah! You are done. That's all there is to it. They don't do anything but look cute. :P But if you ever detatch your petpet from your pet, the petpetpet dissapears! I reapeat IT WILL NOT GO INTO YOUR INVENTORY! Hopefully one day TNT will change that, but that's how it is for now. You don't have to buy a petpetpet, you can enter a code from this petpage that will make it look like you have a painted petpetpet (painted petpetpets don't really exist) it's just a fun little thing to add on!

Painting Pets/Species Changes
The Secret Laboratory
Many neopians work hard to obtain the secret laboratory map! "Why?" you ask. Because it gives you access to... The Secret Lab! (dun dun duuuuuuun!)
What's so great about the secret lab? You may think. Well, at the secret lab you can zap a pet and either get stats increase/decrease, a gender change, a species change, or a color change! Yup. You heard right. You do not have to pay millions of nps for a painted pet. The full lab map is 9 pieces. You can obtain these peices by finding them on the ground, buying them in shops, or trades. In the trades you can get a full set for about 500k. (500,000 nps) ah-hah! Now my nps earning section comes in handy ;) The price varies depending on which peice you have. The shop wiz can be annoying cause if you have piece 9 and you search for "secret laboratory map" you might be shown a list where piece 3 is in shops. So when I price my lab map pieces, I like to go to the trading post (aka tp) and search for what the asking price is for the piece that looks like mine. If you aren't buying the lab map all at once, be sure to keep the pieces in your safety deposit box untill you have all 9, to prevent them getting stolen from a random event. Keep in mind that once you have completed the map, the peices disapear, you can not sell them afterwards!
There are also Lab Only Colors that means you can ONLY get them from the lab ray! These colors are:
Alien (view)
Chocolate (view)
Coconut (view)
Custard (view)
Garlic (view)
Ice (view)
Jelly (view)
Mallow (view)
Snot (view)
Sponge (view)
MSP (view)
(Note: Garlic can be obtained by feeding your jubjub or kiko a LOT of food with garlic in the name.
Also, I believe you cannot get baby or royal from the lab ray. These have to be bought yourself.
The PetPet Lab
Okay so you want to zap your petpets? Well you need to get access to the secret lab first! (see above) Sorry. The petpet lab isn't as useful, but it is fun! Never zap an expensive petpet (or a pet with a petpetpet attatched) because there is a chance your petpet can dissapear forever! Also, another thing to know about the petpet lab is that once you unattatch a pet zapped by the petpet lab ray, it will go back to it's origina form. :)
Morphing Potions
You can change your pet species and color by using a morphing potion! Say you have a Green Xweetox, and you want a Striped Blumaroo. You could then buy a Blumaroo Morphing Potion and feed it to your green Xweetox! Morphing potions can be expensive, the cheapest one out there is the Green Uni Morphing Potion, and neopians usually only use these when they are sick of a color/species of their pet.
Transmogrification Potions
These will turn your pet into a mutant! To see what the color looks and what species can be mutant go Here. Mutant can ONLY be obtained through the transmogrification potions (aka trans potion) or with the lab ray. There is NO paint brush for this.
Fountain Faerie Quests
There is a faerie that if you complete her quest, you can paint your pet. Even if you can not afford her item, if you can bare not being able to use the shop wizard, save for it. If the requested item isn't in shops but in trades, and say there are only a few of them, don't neomail the person and tell them you need it for a ffq, most likely they will only raise their asking price not lower it; and if there is only one in trades, that wouldn't be very good for you now, would it? You can also get an avatar if you paint a buzz.
Now if you want the avatar, but not a buzz, I have a suggestion. There is a potion that if you feed it to your pet, it will turn it into a limited edition species (besides draik) of whatever the color is of your pet before you fed it the potion. If the limited editon species doesn't have that color option then it will just turn into a basic color, so I suggest painting your buzz a color that all of the l.e. pets can be, and that you like all of the l.e. pets in that color. The potion costs over 100,000 nps though, but you could still save up for it!
There are some colors the Fountain Faerie cannot paint your pet, this includes Royal, MSP, Ice, Usuki, Quiguki, and Robot. (if you know others please nm me) It can do some of the lab only colors, besides the ones listed above.
There are some ways to get two avatars out of this, paint a buzz a color that is an avatar pet color. For example grey, pink, or snow. For further information about avatars, see the avatar section.
Paint Brushes
So you want to know how to paint your pet? Scared of the lab ray? A morphing potion with the species and color you want don't exist? Or is you pet already the species you want it to be you just want a different color? Well, you can use a paint brush then. In neopia, paint brushes are two words. So when searching for one in the shop wiz or trading post, make it two words, otherwise you wont find anything. To see all the colors your pet can be painted go here and select your pet's species in the drop down menu. Once you have decided a color, you find out how much that paint brush is worth using the Trading Post or Auctions. Once you have obtained your oh so sought after paint brush (aka pb) go here. You will see that there is a drop down menu under each pet you own that can be painted that color. Select the color under the pet you wish to paint and then hit submit. Horrah horrah! You have a new sparkling painted pet! Note: pbs DISSAPEAR after being used. So you can't sell it once you have painted your pet (that's why they are expensive silly!)
Note: The royal color for pets can only be obtained by a paint brush. You can not get this color from the lab ray or a Fountain Faerie Quest (aka ffq). If your pet that you are going to paint is a boy, then look at the royal boy color version of your pet. Same thing for a girl. If the gender of your pet is not the color you want, for expample say you have a girl lupe but you want a royal boy lupe, then see the section on how to change a pets gender.
Petpet Paint Brushes
So you want a painted petpet? It's the same process as a paintbrush, instead you go here to decide what color you want to paint your petpet. and go here to paint it! You need to have your petpet attatched to your pet to be able to paint it. To attatch just go to your inventory and select the petpet. From the drop down menu just select what pet you want to have it and voila! Your pet now has a petpet.
Pet's Aren't Just a Color!!
Your pet does not need to be painted, limited edition, or restricted to be special! Give your pet a personality. For help, When you are done reading this wonderful petpage, click on the button that says: EXTRAordinary. It will take you to a great petpage!

Neoboards
First of all, I would say don't rush it. Take a little while to get familiar with the boards; surf the different kinds and see how people themselves post things. Help Chat (aka HC) and Avvie Chat (aka AC) are pretty popular, but they can be mean there. Just take some time to learn how things work and what boards you are most interested in. I don't suggest hanging out at the Newbie boards- they aren't very productive in making acutual friends or to become succesful.
To make friends here on neo, one of the fastest ways is to go on the neoboards. I'm here to help you with
what type of behavior is and isn't appreciated on the boards. This is only a guideline on how you will more likely get positive and pleasent responses from fellow neopians, but in no way am I enforcing what is here (unless it's something deliberately against the
Terms and Conditions.) Also, to keep your account safe, please read AND follow the Chat Rules.
I would like to add that although you can't see anyone and just see their words on your computer screen, there are real people typing those messages you read with real feelings. Try to be nice when you can, getting along with other users on neopets it a lot like getting along with people in the real world. Keep that in mind, as well as neo's rules and my tips, and you should do fine making friends and getting along with others!
Making Neofriends
Least Successful Techniques
Making a board saying "I need neofriends" may be the fastest way to make neofriends, but most likely you will never talk to these people again
If you are trying to make nf in hopes of being given items, there are a few things that you should think about first: One is if you never talk to someone, how likely are you to randomly send them a present? Not likely right? Not to mention making friends to get items isn't a good reason to be friends. Also, people have the option to have "VIPs". What this does is you can select who you see on your drop down menu when you send an item to a neofriend.
Most likely, you will not be added to someone's VIP list for making a board simply asking to be nfs, so there's little chance of them deciding to randomly give an item, and look through that drop down menu, and see your name, because you most likely wouldnt have been added to their VIP list! Get it?
Another common unsuccessful way to make a nf is to randomly request people that you have never talked to! They won't know who you are and will most likely do one of the following: reject, ignore, or add and forget you. A helpful idea is to think of making nf like you make real friends. Would you ever walk up to a stranger and shout "want to be friends!!?" or "I need friends!!!!!" I certainly hope not! If you do, then um, good luck with that, buddy!
Most Successful Techniques
Talk to people! have conversations and get to know them. Maybe as you play neopets more, you decide to spend a lot of time in one board. Many users do this, they pick a favorite. So you might see some of the same faces after a period of time while chatting on the boards. You will become more and more aquainted. After you both get a little familiar with eachother, go and request to be their nf! If you are rejected, don't feel hurt. Sometimes people just like to keep their neofriend list small and only have very close friends there. It's okay! :) A positive about this technique is that you will acutally be making a FRIEND. There is no reason to have a long list of nfs that you will never talk to. You don't get prizes or nps for being the most popular. It's pointless.
What Is and Isn't appreciated on the NeoBoards
As I said before, none of this is being enforced by myself. I am telling you what the majority of neopians like and don't like.
DONTs:
-Don't use ch4tsp3ak. common words to avoid: lyk, lolz, u, r, !!!!!!!!!, or !!!!1!!!!!1!!1. typos happen, but please try to use actual english!
- TYPE IN ALL CAPS!
- Use a lot of smilies in making boards or with every post you make
- beg
- whine
- break any of the rules (for a list of the rules, go visit the Terms and Conditions page, or just click here and here
- constantly bump when there is no need to. i understand the regular boards go pretty quickly, but if you *just* made a post, there's likely no need to bump
- Be off topic (making a board in the wrong place: ex- on the Beauty Contest board asking "Where is the giant omelette?")
- Post chain letters. They do not work, and NO. TNT DOES NOT APPROVE THEM OR THAT IT WILL WORK. It's a lie. I gaurentee that they will never ever ever ever ever EVER work. And, to top it off, it is considered spam and off-topic so you can and most likely will get reported, as well as recieving a warning.
- Pretend that you are someone else, either it be another neopian user or some famous person. Impersonating a neopets user can get you frozen, and impersonating someone famous is just annoying :P
- Report someone multiple times. TNT hates it, and just slows things down.
DOs:
- be on topic
- Make topics that have a point, weather it be for help or asking what everyone's dream pet is (the point of that would be for fun and to converse with fellow neopians with things that are still be neopets related) If it's a topic for fun try to pick something that could be interesting for others
- Use the correct board for the topic you are making
- Be friendly
- Be patient; if someone doesnt post in 2 minutes doesnt mean no one is there
Some Things You May Come Across
n00b vs. newbie
You may hear the term "n00b" a lot. Just becasue you are called one doesn't necessarily mean you are one. There is a difference between a noob and a newbie.
A newbie is someone who is new to the site, and wants to learn how to be productive and successful.
Noobs spam (spam= Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages) or beg. Bascially if you just want help on how to get what you want, you're not being a noob. If you want to just be given what you want and beg for it, then you are being a noob.
Report Happies
Some people love to report people whenever they see someone do something even slightly wrong. Do not worry, if you didn't do anything wrong you won't recieve a warning from TNT. And you won't want to become a report happy either, or report the same person multiple times. It will only slow things down, and even though Report Happies may think they are helping TNT, they really aren't when they do it for the slightest reason. I suggest to only report when you feel something serious is happening, like continuous vulgur language, continuous spamming, or if there is harassment going on. Serious harassment, not someone one time calling you a name. (unless of course it is highly insulting).
Flamers
Sadly, not everyone on neopets is nice. Don't let it scare you, but its the truth. There are people called flamers. What they do is you make a board or post that maybe isn't anything wrong or is an honest mistake and they come and "flame" you. Flaming is basically making fun of you, rubbing things in your face, or just flat out being mean. If you get flamed for doing something wrong, then well, it was deserving. But it also happens when you didn't. Sometimes one person will flame, and everyone will jump in on it. The "mob mentality" sort of thing. If you did nothing wrong or made an honest mistake, don't cry about it. Don't make the sob faces or sad faces on the board. It really just makes you look worse and feeds them more fuel. Either gently stand up for yourself or just leave the board. Honestly the only thing you can do is brush it off. If things get really serious, and they start being violent or harassing you- then report it once and walk away. If they start to neomail you harassing you, report the neomail and put them on your block list so that they can no longer contact you. Harassment can also be them sending you many piles of dung or sludge or something. You can report that too. If anything happens and you aren't sure if it will be considered harassment or not, either make a board in the HC (without telling anyone the username) giving a short summary of what happened and asking if they think it is reportable, or you can neomail me and I will do my best to respond asap. I am online daily.
Now, I am not saying this to scare you, and you aren't going to be flamed for every board you make (if you followed my guidelines or use common sense) but it happens. I'm just telling you that it's out there. Don't be scared to chat with others! Lurking the boads will help you learn what flaming is, and what type of things will be more likely to get you flamed. Lurking is just reading boards without saying anything. I wish you luck on your neoboard adventures, and hope you make plenty of friends and joyful memories.

Quests
There are two different type of quests on neopets.
Faerie, which is random, and Voulintary.
Faerie
Quests
Sometimes you will get a quest from a faerie
when you are on neopets. It happens like a random event.
Different faeries ask for different things and will
reward you differently. Below is an explination of what
faeries ask for what items, and how they will reward
you.
Fire Faerie

She asks for clothing items, In return she will increase
on of your pet's strengths.
Light Faerie

She will ask you for trading cards, and will raise your
pet's level.
Earth Faerie

She will ask you for magic items, and in return make
your pets bloated and have full health. What many people
don't know is that she will also make your pet heavier!
Neat little fact, huh?
Air Faerie

She will ask you for beauty products, and in return will
make your pet faster.
Dark Faerie

She will ask you for toys, and in return will raise your
pet's maximum health level.
Water Faerie

She will ask you for books, and will raise your pet's
defense.
The Faerie Queen

She is one of the rarer faeries to have a quest from. If
you complete her quest, she will make your pet "super
strong" which really means, raise a few stats on your
pet's strength.
The Space Faerie

The space faerie is the second of the three rare
faeries. In return for an item, she will raise your pet
4 levels.
The Fountain Faerie

The most rare faerie of all. If you complete her quest,
you will be granted access to paint a pet of your choice
from her fountain. Click HERE to learn more.
Important Note!!!: The pet that is
rewarded after completing a quest is random. You do not
get to choose which pet will recieve the stat points. If
you plan on being active in the battledome, then what a
lot of serious battledomers do is have only one pet,
that way the pet they want to get the stats will get the
stats.
When on a faerie quest, you can not use the shop
wizard! "Oh no!!" you think, "How will I ever be able to
do this?!" Well do not fret, because there is a special
board just for faerie quests. You will see that many
people will go there to search for the items people need
for quests! Awww, isn't that nice? What will happen is
you go to a board, or make your own. When someone does a
search for you, they will give you names and how many
neopoints it will cost. Copy the first name on the list
given, and paste it in the searchbar on your sidebar.
Next, click on that username, go to their shop, and
browse for your item! Now, how to get that item to the
faerie? You can either click on Pet central, and there
will be a link that says "faerie quests" or you can
click on the shop wizard, and you will see your faerie
say that's cheating, and you're on a faerie quest! The
word faerie quest will be a link to where you need to
go. OR you could go to Explore, Faerieworld, then enter
the city, and click on the quests building. And there
you go!
Rejecting Quests
If you don't want to do a quest, go to the faerie quest
place, and click, "I do not have this item!" after that
you will see the message saying something like "No more
quests for you for another 473 seconds!" What you have
to do is go back there after that time is up, or else
you won't get a faerie quest again until you do. (at
least, that is what I have heard, but it doesn't hurt to
be careful!)
I know the page isn't done yet, but if you'd like, you can link to me!
