Welcome to Sugarplums...

One of the most coveted and secretive lands in all of Neopia. If you haven't heard of this special little place before, that is quite possibly because hardly anybody knows of it. You see, the entire population of Sugarplums could fit into the palm of your hand. There have been rumors for many years about where and how such a place came to be, but few really know. Sugarplums is nestled between the petals of a funny little rose that grows and grows but fails to bud. It was only when Erupjo, a very shy faerie Shoyru peeled the petals of this rose back that Sugarplums was discovered. Some have seen some Fairy Winkles, the inhabitants of Sugarplums, but only the ones who've grown wings and sometimes flutter in and out to collect dew drops and food.

A Guide to Fairy Winkles

There are three different species of Fairy Winkles! While they all have their distinct qualities and personalities, they can look relatively similar at a distance and it causes great confusion! Use this guide to differentiate which Fairy Winkle you may be spending time with. They can be fussy and particular so it may come in handy to know who is who.

DUMPLINGS
A Dumpling is perhaps the most common type of Fairy Winkle. Though of course, Fairy Winkles are not very common, are they? These little ones are the most commonly discovered Fairy Winkle. This is probably because Dumplings are only born in groups of four or more!

How to Distinguish: Dumplings have a singular curl sprouting from the top of their head. Yes, only the Dumplings seem to have hair. Nobody is sure why.

Useful tips: Dumplings are the most social of all Fairy Winkles, so if you're looking to strike up a conversation with one, I would suggest approaching a Dumpling. They love being fed small pieces of uncooked dough and pastry but will not eat anything else! So don't try to feed them other things.

ROSEBUDS
Rosebuds are the shyest, least seen and most sought after Fairy Winkles. Because they are so scarce, Neopians seem most hopeful of finding them. However, even when a Rosebud is found, they are easily frightened and usually don't stay around to talk.

How to Distinguish: Rosebuds all have a little rosebud growing from their heads. Hence the name! They also hide in flower pollen.

Useful tips: As I've said, Rosebuds are shy! If you should happen to discover one, do not yell or talk too loudly. The best technique to get the attention of a Rosebud is to put a drop of honey in the palm of your hand and patiently hold it out.

WINGLES
Wingles were the first species of Faerie Winkles ever discovered in Neopia. They look for, gather and collect food, sparkles and other trinkets from all over Neopia to bring back to Rosebuds. Wingles constantly sing and have rather high pitched voices.

How to Distinguish: Wingles are the only type of Fairy Winkle to have fully developed wings, granting them the ability to fly. Most Faerie Winkles have a small pair of budding wings but cannot fly with them.

Useful tips: Wingles are attracted to noise. Neopians have found that they can occasionally find a Wingle by humming, singing, or playing with bells. A few have reported that they have drawn the unwanted attention of Wingles by leaving wind chimes on their porch!

Origin and Discovery

It was a beautiful - but seemingly ordinary - day for Erupjo, the extremely timid and delicate faerie Shoyru. She was out in her garden admiring her flowerbeds when she decided she would go flower picking in some nearby fields. It is believed that Erupjo did not discover Fairy Winkles, but they in fact discovered her. Her shy and sweet nature is said to have attracted the inhabitants of Rosebuds, who had been secretly living in Neopia for years.

For you see, suddenly Erupjo was caught in a fog of giggling, glittering dust. She began to panic as she felt little things crawling on her head and chirping into her ears. But right before she ran away, a Dumpling Fairy Winkle landed in her palm and smiled up at her. The Dumpling said to the others I think we are frightening her! and then just as quickly as they'd come, they all quieted down. Never before had Erupjo seen such tiny and incredibly little Fairies.

Are you little ones a species of petpetpet? Erupjo asked. But she was soon to learn that Fairy Winkles were not pets, petpets, or petpetpets. They were their own unusual creatures, living in a small land they'd named themselves. A land that had not yet been marked on any Neopian map. And even if it had, it would probably be too small to see.

Erupjo was too big to climb into the flower and visit Sugarplums, but all of the Fairy Winkles immediately took to her, and even the shyest of the Rosebuds who had yet to leave would eventually crawl into her palm and take naps while she sang to them. Erupjo began visiting the flower patch nearly every day, having made petite trinkets and toys for her new friends. They would swarm her upon her arrival and it was in doing so that other Neopians began to hear about Fairy Winkles, though their exact location has always remained a mystery. Erupjo has kept their secret so as to ensure their safety.

Fairy Winkles 101 & FAQ

Because there is such little information on Fairy Winkles and the land of Sugarplums, a lot of misconceptions have surfaced. With the help of Erupjo, I was able to personally clarify many myths and answer questions some have had about them!

Fairy Winkles 101

MYTH: Fairy Winkles do not like Neopians or Neopets and avoid socializing with them at all costs!

TRUTH: Fairy Winkles love Neopians, they are just incredibly shy and self contained. They frighten very easy and can be scared away by loud noises and frantic Neopets peeling back petals to try and find them, but if they feel safe, they love to spend time with others.

MYTH: You can buy bottled Fairy Winkles in Neopian stores.

TRUTH: Fairy Winkles were, at one time, rumored to be purchasable and mistaken for the common bottled faeries sold in Kauvara's Magic Shop. This is false. Fairy Winkles cannot be purchased and have no affiliation to any other Neopian faerie.

MYTH: Fairy Winkles are the result of one of Dr. Sloth's experiments gone terribly eyry. He had meant for them to be maniacal pixies but they turned out to be Fairy Winkles.

TRUTH: While nobody is quite sure how it was that Fairy Winkles came to be, it is certain that Dr. Sloth had nothing to do with their creation. Some believe they were in fact the creation of a magical flower.

FAQ

How do I meet or see a Fairy Winkle?
First I would recommend reading the Fairy Winkle Guide posted above and familiarize yourself with each species. Dumplings, Rosebuds and Wingles are all drawn to different things, and knowing what a Fairy Winkle likes and does not like will help you try to attract them. If you have a good understanding of them, I would then suggest spending time in some of Neopia's flower fields and being very patient. Please remember that is incredibly rare to actually see a Fairy Winkle, let alone interact with one.

How often do people spot Fairy Winkles?
Very few, and nearly half of the sightings have been unintentional. Reports of fairy winkles following the music of wind chimes, nibbling in baked pies left on windowsills and trying to run off with teeth tucked under pillows have all come in. Nobody is quite sure why Fairy Winkles are drawn to some places and some Neopians or Neopets, but it is my belief that they feel safest around others who are shy.

Why won't Erupjo divulge more information on the land of Sugarplums and Fairy Winkles?
Erupjo's main concern is maintaining the safety and comfort of Fairy Winkles and she firmly believes that if Sugarplums were to be discovered, their land and homes could be jeopardized. She has promised to keep all secrets that Fairy Winkles have asked of her. However, Erupjo will always try to answer questions people may have, though she may not know the answer. There are so many mysteries surrounding Fairy Winkles that we don't think anyone may ever be able to answer.

Has anyone ever seen or been to Sugarplums?
Because the whole land of Sugarplums can fit into a closed flower, it is much too small for any Neopian, pet, petpet or even petpetpet to enter. However, Erupjo said that shortly after she befriended the Fairy Winkles, they began mixing different types of pollen, sparkles and other unknown concoctions together in hopes to create a temporary shrinking elixir for her.

The Life of a Fairy Winkle

So now that we've established what these special little beings are, the next question is, well, what do they do? Aside from napping, munching, giggling and making an occasional trip out of Sugarplums and into Neopia, most have little to no idea as to how a Fairy Winkle occupies its time.

Fairy Winkles actually live quite busy lives, especially the Wingles, as the others depend on these flying fellows to collect goods and bring them home. All of the Fairy Winkles work together and pool in their talents to keep Sugarplums a happy and lovely place to live.

The Dumplings sort what the Wingles bring and bake fresh meals from it, just as they weave grass stems into tiny beds and create many unique decorative items to furnish their land.

As for the Rosebuds, these particularly shy Fairy Winkles have the most tedious and mysterious job of all. Nobody is quite sure what they have created, if anything, but this species specializes in mixing ingredients for medicine, magic and abilities.

Take a Fairy Winkle Home

Oh my! It would seem that the Fairy Winkles have really taken to you and your neopet. Even the Rosebuds are peeking out from their petals to see you. They were wondering if they could spend some time with your neopet, if that's alright with you and all...
