Common Misconceptions

Help Chat (Hc)

  • Misconception: Bumping the board will keep it on the top and get you help faster.
Truth: Bumping creates more posts and makes it look like you're already being helped.
  • Misconception: People can't ask pound questions on the Hc now. You should only ask on the pound boards about pound questions (ie: about transfers and the like).
Truth: You can ask pound questions on the Hc.
  • Misconception: Topics about adoption should be posted on the Help Chat.
Truth: Once, but not any more. Now there's a "Neopian Pound" Neoboard.
  • Misconception: This is the help board.
Truth: This is the Neopets help board. Homework or real life help doesn't belong here.
  • Misconception: It's ok to ask for help or "hints" on the Lenny Conundrum.
Truth: Asking for help solving the Lenny Conundrum is considered cheating because the prize is shared.
  • Misconception: No one on the Hc is helpful at all! All they do is yell at people all day.
Truth: We generally deal with scammers, spammers, and people who just don't get it all the time, and can get a little snippy, especially if we've been dealing with the same problem a lot all day. Take our sarcasm with a grain of salt.

Common Misconceptions

Pets

  • Misconception: Grundos are rare Neopets.
Truth: The "restricted" label in the Hatchery means only that they cannot be hatched like normal pets; all Grundos are born on the Virtupets Station. They're actually just as common as many other species.
  • Misconception: Increasing your pet's intelligence helps earn a better score from King Hagan.
    Truth: It's completely random.
  • Misconception: Grarrls cannot be morphed.
Truth: They can - just make sure they drink the MP, not eat the bottle whole.
  • Misconception: Pets may "vanish" if put in the Pound.
Truth: No pets disappear, but the Lutari is the only species that will run away, because you can not pound or transfer a Lutari.
  • Misconception: It is imperative to raise a pet's level, whether s/he's a battle pet or not.
Truth: Level only matters if you're going to train for the Battledome.
  • Misconception: No-one can have more than four pets.
Truth: No account can have more than four pets, but one person can have up to five accounts.
  • Misconception: A Baby Draik looks like an egg.
Truth: Actually, that's the Baby Pteri.
  • Misconception: The stronger your pet is, the better score you get on Test Your Strength.
Truth: Test your Strength is completely random and it's very rare to get a good score.

Common Misconceptions

People

  • Misconception: Newbies can't possibly afford paint brushes.
Truth: Just because an account is new doesn't mean they couldn't have an older main account. Or they could have gotten a lucky random event. Or they could just be really good at games. The point is, don't judge people based on their account age.
  • Misconception: All of Tnt are American.
Truth: Most of them are, but Adam and Donna, the Founder Rulers of Neopia, Aka #6 and Poptart, come from the British Isles. Various other countries also have a basic staff crew, due to the whole timezone thing. Outside the Us, the biggest staff base is in Singapore.
  • Misconception: All Neopets users are American.
Truth: Neopets users come from all around the world.
  • Misconception: Neopets is only a children's site.
Truth: Neopets is a family site, meaning it's for all ages. You're never "too old" to be on Neopets and adults are allowed here. (The writer of this guide was 23 at the time of writing).
  • Misconception: Children under 13 cannot access the Neoboards.
Truth: They can if their parents have previously authorized them by post.
  • Misconception: The best way to get through to Tnt is with a petition.
Truth: Petitions don't look genuine enough - the best option is to contact Tnt individually with your concerns.
  • Misconception: Neopets is only 6 years old, because the shields only reach 6 years.
Truth: Borovan (Adam's account) is the oldest account in Neopia and is a good judge of the age of Neopets. Cool Girl's account is the oldest known, non-TNT account in Neopia.

Common Misconceptions

Items

  • Misconception: Clothing can only be purchased at the Nc Mall with Neocash.
Truth: There are many, many clothing items that can be purchased with Neopoints, and are announced on the news almost daily.

Important! Not all clothes are wearable.
Truth: Many, many unwearable clothes were created long before the ability to dress our pets.
  • Misconception: Buying the appropriate medicine is the only way to help your sick pet.
Truth: You can also heal your pet at the Healing Springs, as well as making your pet sick with a different illness whose cure is cheaper.
  • Misconception: Every paint color comes from a Paint Brush.
Truth: Some colors (ie. Robot, Jelly, Ice, etc.) can only come from the lab ray, fountain faerie, or other sources.
  • Misconception: If you can't find something on the shop wizard, it doesn't exist.
Truth: Most likely the item is "unbuyable", or costs over 100,000 NP and is only sold in trades or auctions.
  • Misconception: All retired pain brushes cannot be used to paint a your pet.
Truth: There are "retired" paint brushes that still work, such as the Faerie Paint Brush.
  • Misconception: And item's Est. Value" is the price you should charge for it.
Truth: You should always check the shop wizard, trading post, or auction house for current prices.

Common Misconceptions

Places

  • Misconception: There is an active code that will get you into the Kreludan mines.
Truth: Currently no code is set active.
  • Misconception: Painting pets is done at the Rainbow Fountain in Faerieland.
Truth: It's done at the Rainbow Pool in Neopia Central (just west of the Art Catacombs).
  • Misconception: The Brain Tree asks about real characters.
Truth: The Brain Tree randomly generates character names and the only way to answer them is by doing two Esophagor quests.

Common Misconceptions

Other Boards

  • Misconception: It's Ok to post offsite links if you space them out or disguise them.
Truth: The filters won't get you, but Tnt will.
  • Misconception: Bump" and "Spam" are acronyms for "Bring up my posts" and "Silly, pointless, annoying messages
Truth: These are just little mnemonics people have created. The idea of "bumping" something forward in a queue, for instance, exists even in the Realworld.
  • Misconception: Posting a person's username is harassment.
Truth: It's only harassment if you are, well, harassing the person such as posting lies about the individual or asking others to report him/her.

Common Misconceptions

Coding and Filters

  • Misconception: It is ok to test the filters by trying to post blocked things in creative ways. It helps TNT make their filters better.
Truth: Absolutely not. Things are blocked for a reason. Trying to get around the filters will most likely earn you a frozen account, not a pat on the back.
  • Misconception: The new coding filters are an accident, and TNT is trying to remove them.
Truth: There are some issues and mistakes with it, but the new coding filters were placed on purpose in response to a scam where users were covering overpriced dung with images of paint brushes. TNT is trying to be fair by fixing it, but only in a way that could prevent the scam from happening again. The new coding filters may be permanent. And we may just have to deal with it.
  • Misconception: It is ok to use the workarounds because TNT already said they're trying to fix them.
Truth: Trying to get around the filters is never ok. You should use workarounds at your own risk, knowing that TNT could chose to freeze your account.
Additional Information: Placing a hash (#) in front of disallowed words is not an effective way to get around the filters, as it only works for Internet Explorer. Every other browser treats it like neither the # nor the word it is in front of is there. It is an example of bad coding. Don't do it!
