BROWSER NOTICE IE will show the tables without making them looking as though they have dropshadows (lol). IE also has the spiffy feature that will make the contents menu work. Firefox does not :( (aka, if you're using Firefox, you'll have to scroll down manually). IE and Firefox are the only browsers I have, so if you're having problems viewing this page in another browser, neomail me and I'll try to come up with an alternative and/or way to fix the problem. Enjoy! :)

HOW TO CHANGE THE TRAIT OF YOUR PET: don't need no site spotlight to be spotlighted (thanks aleo; OPD rocks!)

Greetings, guest!

You look on a pet's lookup. You stare at its high level, Battledome score and wonderfully pretty petpet. But one of the things that appeals to you is the COLOUR of the pet. Would that be Rainbow, Silver, Robot...

You wonder how you can change your pet into one of the dazzling colours. You just have to find out how...

... and your first stop is this ultimate guide to changing the trait of your pet!!

A NOTICE ABOUT THE PRICES They're all approximates, and I don't spend every week keeping up with all the price changes, especially for the paint brushes. So if you want to know the "current" price for a paint brush/etc, then check the Shop Wizard/Trading Post yourself. I repeat: prices here are approximates and not always up to date.

A Visit to the Rainbow Pool

This is where you go with your pet and paint brush and paint your pet, but it is also a helpful resource for which pets can be painted which colour.

Go to the Rainbow Pool and click on All Pet Colours and specify one of the following:

  • Colours by species (first dropdown menu) - to find out what colours your pet can come in.

  • Species by colour (second dropdown menu) - to find out which pets will come in that certain colour.

There you will have a list of colours/species. All you've got to do is click on one of them. A picture will pop up for preview, but note that if you click on it, or away from it, it will disappear.

What fun!!

Alternatively, you can go to neocolours.me.uk or rainbowpool.net

It's Time to Change The Trait!
Only... how? Read on and find out the many ways...

Battledome
Ready? Set? Attack!

There are a few Battledome items to my knowledge that change the trait of your pet. I can't find any of the below on the Trading Post but I know they're about 4-5million neopoints if you buy them off other players.

Special thanks to the In-Depth Battlepedia for attack/defence info:)

Pocket Lab Ray (thanks to aleonar74)

Can be bought at the Smuggler's Cove on Krawk Island for 100 dubloons. It could:
- Work just like the normal lab ray. and make permanent changes in the process; or
- Make two air and two water attacks
Fragile. Only works in two-player.

Blue Kacheek Flour

Turns your opponent into a blue kacheek. Single-use and fragile. Only works in two-player. If it changes your opponent's colour and species, it will not do the damage (two air and two light icons) and will break.

Yellow Chia Flour

Turns your opponent into a yellow chia. Single-use. Only works in two-player. Has no battle icons.

My fellow OLDPD friend says: "don't report people who use the flours on your pet" ;)

Lab Ray
All you need is a whole load of luck...

Because the Ray is the most unpredictable thing in Neopia (well, maybe not...), you aren't sure what the thing would do to your pet. Lower their stats? Or maybe increasing them? Or changing the gender! But there's only one way to find out...

One of the things the mighty Ray can do to your pet is change species and maybe their colour as well! It's easy once you know how...

You will first need to collect all nineSecret Laboratory Map" pieces. Prices vary, and by that I don't just mean it goes up and down, but each individual piece would cost different from another one!

Map pieces range from 45,000NP to 60,000NP, so of course it's difficult to predict exactly how much one piece costs, especially on the shop wizard!!! When I got the lab map for my account dolphins_girl, it cost me around 450,000NP, but some people pay more/less.

The good side about this Ray is that it can zap your pet into colours that can't be obtained from a paint brush:

Alien | Apple | Asparagus | Aubergine | Avocado | Carrot | Chokato | Clay | Coconut | Custard | Durian | Garlic | Gooseberry | Grape | Ice | Jelly | Lemon | Lime? | Mallow | MSP | Pea | Peach | Pear | Pineapple | Plum | Robot | Snot | Sponge | Thornberry | Tomato

Please note that the only exception of the Ice Pets is the Ice Bori, which you could only get if you downloaded the Yahoo!/Neopets Toolbar in October 2004.

The colours with a ? next to them, I'm not sure about. If YOU are sure, neomail me! Thanks!

So, as you can tell, most of the colours are fruits. And the one Neopets species that can turn into fruits is the chia. Click here for more information regarding chia pops.

Remember that only some of the colours are for limited species. Check out the Rainbow Pool for more information.

The Ray can't zap your pet Royal, Plushie, Usuki, Quiguki, Pirate or Baby (as far as I know).

Regarding the Baby zappings: if you have seen a screenie of a lab ray zapping a pet Baby, then it was before the neopets team announced that Baby has been taken off the lab ray list. Maybe it was because of Boochi?

Like I said, you need a whole load of luck. If you always wanted a Starry Gelert, but have a Yellow Moehog, then you can't just tell the Ray to grant your wish, you know... all I can say is, have fun :)

I heard that charlixsparkles! You can't not have fun!!!

Go and zap now!
More help?

Magical Chia Pops

Feeding a certain Magical Chia Pop (and NOT Non-Magical!) will turn your Chia into some form or another.

Here is a list of all the chia pops that will change your chia (thanks maraqua.net *now a closed site* for most of the colours; neocolours for the rest):

Apple | Aubergine | Avocado | Blueberry | Carrot | Chokato* | Durian | Gooseberry | Grape | Lemon | Lime | Orange | Peach | Pea | Pear | Pepper | Pineapple | Plum | Thornberry | Tomato

* - can be used on kikos too

But there are fruit-flavoured chia pops that are listed in the Lab Ray section, check that out.

You can tell the difference between the Magical and Non-Magical Pops: for the lime, orange and blueberry pops, it will say Non-Magical.

Just be aware that not all of the Magical Chia Pops will change the trait. Remember to check the Rainbow Pool.

The other colours (you can find a complete list at the Rainbow Pool) are obtained from the Ray.

Note: Because I don't know much about Chia Pops (magical or otherwise), I have nevertheless decided to put a section about it in this guide. I advise you to check out the New Features to find out if there are more chia pops that will change the trait. Thank you!!

Buy your Chia Pops here.

Magical Plushies
Whoever knew a soft cute toy could have so much magic...!

Yep, Magical Plushies exist in Neopia too. They're very rare, they're expensive... and to top it off, they can only be used once.

Most species have Magical Plushies to change the trait. They look very similar to the standard plushie. The descriptions are different, however:

  • Blue Cybunny Plushie: Aww, a cute little cybunny Neopet plushie! The blue ones hop up and down when you clap.

  • Magical Blue Cybunny Plushie: Strange, Im sure this plushie just winked at you!

What are you trying to say? I'm an innocent little plushie!

New Features always reminds fellow Neopians to take extra care when playing with Magical Plushies ;)

And because they can only be used once, once your pet has played with the magical plushie, it will "magically" transform into the normal plushie.

Neggs

There are a few neggs out there that can change the appearance of your neopet...

Kaleideonegg
Cost in negg tokens: 52; Trading Post: 150,000-200,000NP
(Don't ask how to pronounce this; I don't have a clue) Like the Witchy Negg, this Negg can change four things about your neopet; two of which that change the species and the colour. I guess it can change to any pet species and any pet colour... the other two are gender and stat (postive or negative) changes.

Vortex Negg
Cost in negg tokens: 24; Shop Wizard: 70,000-90,000NP
Out of all the colours this Negg could turn your pet into, they HAVE to be Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow. Not one to feed to your newly painted Faerie Ruki.

Witchy Negg
Cost in negg tokens: 48; Trading Post: 150,000-250,000NP
There are four outcomes of this Negg, and the one that does change your Neopet is that it could turn into a Lenny, Moehog, or Tuskaninny. And you probably want to know the other outcomes, so they are: 1. Change gender; 2. Gain two maximum hit points; 3. Intelligence increase by five.

Run to the Neggery!

Paint Brushes
This is probably the most common, but it doesn't come cheap!

Here is a guide of all the paint brushes* in Neopia which you can use**, a quick overview and estimated/average cost.

* - I am not listing the Starter Paint Brushes because they are only available in newbie packs.
** - "use" as in you can go to the Rainbow Pool and use it. So obviously this excludes the Glass and Stone paint brushes.

Please remember that each of these paint brushes can only be used once. So when it's gone... it's gone!

Just because a certain paint brush is "retired" it doesn't mean you can't use it any more!!! It just makes the paint brush more "harder to find" and make it more rare :)

Potions
A species and a colour in one drink!

This is a favourite; you get an avatar when you give your pet a Morphing Potion :) All a Morphing Potion is is a magic item. And what magic it does! You can change a Red Acara to a Christmas Koi in less than ten seconds.

On the whole, Morphing Potions cost. A lot. The one time I did see a buyable Morphing Potion is a Green Uni Morphing Potion, priced at around 17,500NP. But now, its Shop Wizard average price is about 9,500NP. Now that is what I call cheap! Just under 10,000NP for a Uni, and then you can paint it in any colour you want!

Unfortunately, not all potions have the same rarity or price as a Green Uni one. First of all, it would depend on the:

  • Species: a plain and simple Red Cybunny Morphing Potion is sold at the Trading Post for 800,000NP and yet a Red Acara Morphing Potion is at around 120,000NP! Well, maybe the fact that the Cybunny is a limited edition pet, and so not as common as an Acara.

  • Colour: a Checkered Shoyru Morphing Potion, on the Trading Post, goes for about 500,000NP, and a nice colourful Rainbow Shoyru Morphing Potion goes for about 125,000NP. Now I wouldn't really say much about colour preferences; if one Neopian likes a Checkered Shoyru to a Rainbow one, then there's nothing anyone can do about it. I reckon that the colour the potion would come in would reflect how much the paint brush costs, but in this example, both the Checkered and Rainbow paint brushes have a price of around 200,000NP.

Morphing Potions are available for most species and almost all the colours. You will find a nice lengthy list at neoitems.net for all morphing potions that exist in Neopia :)

The other sort of potions you can buy are Transmogrification Potions. All Sloth's. And they turn your pet into a mutant pet!! These special potions just happen to be the only way to get a mutant pet.

Transmogrification Potions are available for the following species:

Aisha | Blumaroo | Bruce | Buzz | Chia | Cybunny | Draik | Elephante | Flotsam | Gelert | Gnorbu | Grarrl | Grundo | Hissi | Ixi | Jetsam | JubJub | Kacheek | Kiko | Koi | Korbat | Kougra | Krawk | Kyrii | Lenny | Lupe | Meerca | Moehog | Quiggle | Ruki | Scorchio | Shoyru | Skeith | Techo | Tonu | Tuskaninny | Usul | Xweetok | Zafara

Prices, again, vary from Potion to Potion.

Just remember that, like the Morphing Potions, you can paint your mutant pet in any colour!

Random Events
Rare random events, yet effective.

  • Anger: If your pet is feeling pretty angry for a very long time, your pet will turn Red. Because red is the colour of anger. An easy, simple and daily routine to stop this is to feed, groom, play, etc, with your pet. Or, if you seem to be busy, try giving them a petpet. Note that after the anger is gone, your pet will not return to its original colour.*

  • Boochi: Now, Boochi is a 17-year-old, mischievous little baby Bruce and he will randomly appear on the site and could zap your active pet into a baby! There are times in which he misses... and other times he doesn't.

Neopians might take a visit from Boochi in two different ways. They would scream out a "Thank you!" in delight, having wanted a baby pet ever since time began and Boochi has saved them 600,000NP... in other words, they got a baby pet for free!

And other Neopians will scream out a "Thank you!" in disgust, having spent their hard-earned NP on a very expensive paint brush and, two hours it was painted, Boochi pops up and zaps their pet into a baby. In other words, they have to save up again.

Why don't you want a BABY pet?!?

  • Fountain Faerie Quests: OK, this is a good one! If you just happen to cross this faerie's path around Neopia, she will ask for an item just like any other faerie (apart from Taelia, Illusen and Jhudora, of course) and in return, you will have access to her Rainbow Fountain and paint your pet any colour you want - for free! Remember that the Fountain Faerie can't help with some colours (Royal, mspp, ice and robot as far as I know), but I heard that you can paint your pet Clay (if yout pet can be painted Clay), and at certain times of the day, the magic of the Fountain will be used up, but don't worry, just come back later!

You can't REALLY bathe in these waters :P

  • Invisible Random Event: OK not strictly a random event. Basically your pet will suddenly turn invisible, whether you're unaware of it or not...

About a year ago I got that as a random event, but it doesn't tell you it's a random event. Your pet will just suddenly appear invisible. It stinks. A lot. It happened to my Uni. She was painted cloud (I was so happy) and then one day I scrolled down on my userlookup and noticed she was invisible...

-- iluvspike4ever365

  • Sickness/lack of HP?: If your pet is feeling low for a very long time, your pet will turn Blue. To avoid this, cure your pet/s of illnesses as soon as possible, or go to the Healing Springs in Faerieland. There, you will find the nice, kind Water Faerie who will raise your pet/s HP, give you a healing potion or cure your pets totally... or all three! Note that after the sickness, etc, is gone, your pet will not return to its original colour.*

  • * - you can paint your pet, etc, if you want to :) And, these are random events while your pet is low/angry.

    Underwater Fishing items

    (Information from Bunnykid31s petpage.)

Whether you've managed to get a lucky catch from Maraqua's Underwater Fishing or forked out for these items, the results can be very interesting.

Personally, I think these are like the Lab Ray, only one-use, but they're related to changing traits, so I'm putting this here for your information :)

    Flash of Rainbow Fountain Water
    Trading Post cost: about 600,000NP
The name says it all! In this bottle, there is a nice measure of Rainbow Fountain water. All you've got to do is give it to one of your pets to drink... and it'll change into a random colour. However, like the Fountain itself, it doesn't have the colours such as Royal, Ice, etc). A bit like the Lab Ray; you've got to take your chances with this.

    Mysterious Swirly Potion
Trading Post cost: ranging from 500,000 - 750,000NP
Give this potion to one of your pets and they'll turn into a random Limitied Edition* species - again, like the Lab Ray.

It will keep the original colour of the neopet you fed the Potion to. For example, if you fed this to your Royal Skeith, it could turn into a Royal Poogle. But if you feed the Potion to your Chocolate Ruki... well as of 26 Sept 06 none of the LE pets can be painted Chocolate. So your Ruki would turn into a basic-coloured Limited Edition pet.

By the way, how in Neopia could you get a Chocolate pet?
    * thanks avatar.starried.net as well as the information in the above paragraph!

Extra Stuff You Might Need To Know
Just to put you on your guard...

    Abbreviations and Definitions
These can always come in handy!

Buyable: items you can buy using the Shop Wizard, eg items priced 99,999NP or below

FFQ stands for "Fountain Faerie Quest

k stands for "thousand" (so when you see "300k" on a Trading Post wishlist, it means "300,000NP")

MP (or mp) stands for "morphing potion

NP: neopoints (Neopian currency? Does this spring to mind?)

PB (or pb) stands for "paint brush

trans is short for "transmogrification" and refers to Sloth's potions

Unbuyable: items you can't buy using the Shop Wizard, eg items that have a value of 100,000NP or more

    Conclusion
    What have you learnt today?

So, now you know each and every way to change the trait of your pet. So you're probably going to go out there now and buy a paint brush/map piece/etc, all set to make your pet look prettier.

But there are tricks out there as well. I read it in the Neopian Times all the time, so beware that:

    • A Baby Paint Brush Plushie will not change your pet into a Baby when you play with it, random or otherwise.

    • A Grundo Bath Sponge will not change your pet into a Sponge when you groom your pet.

They are all tricks, like I said, and you don't want to get ripped off for something that isn't going to happen, aren't you? ;)

    Prices Listed
All you need to know about the prices listed

I have compiled quite a lot of prices on this page, and yet the only ones that will not change are the Hidden Tower paint brushes. Remember that prices change from Neopian to Neopian, and as the years go by, the prices go up and down. This may be because of the Neopian Inflation, or the rarity of the item. So as prices change, this page won't, unless it is a significant one :)

Rarity is no gaurentee to price, however. Take the Rarity 150 paint brushes for example. They each have a different price, regardless how common, or uncommon, they are. Same goes for the laboratory map pieces: each piece has a rarity of 99 and prices vary from each piece, right?

    Screenies

I regret to inform you that, because of the image host that hosted the screenies, I can't show them here. Sorry about that. But that does NOT mean that I wouldn't appreciate what you have to say :)

    Where to Get Them
A complete guide on where to get all these trait-changing items

Auction House | Event/plot prizes | Random Events | Shop Wizard | Special Events | Trading Post

    [x] Auction House
This is only good if you have a fast internet connection. Basically, you find the item you're looking for (maybe using the Auction Genie), place your bid and hope that you'll get the item.

    [x] Event/plot prizes
Participated in a plot? One of its prizes could be a paint brush! So far, and as far as I know, you could buy a Lost Desert Paint Brush if you participated in the Lost Desert Plot (2005) and a Halloween Paint Brush if you took part in the Altador Cup 2006. However, you needed to earn enough plot/event points to buy these. (If you know any more, please let me know! Thanks!)

    [x] Random Events
If you're really really really lucky you might have a Something has Happened! at the top of the page and you will be given an item, amongst which would be a paint brush from Jacko the Phantom Painter, a part of the lab map or anything!! Yep, these things happen too. Unfortunately, you can't take your pick.

You can also win paint brushes from the Lost Desert Fruit Machine and the Alien Aisha Vending Machine, and maybe prizes from World Challenge maps!

    [x] Shop Wizard
Only useful for the buyables. Some of the paint brushes I've listed are buyable from the Shop Wizard, just look carefully and see Shop Wizard cost. Lab map pieces are buyables too but each piece is called "Secret Laboratory Map" and so harder to find the exact piece of map! Rememmer that some morphing potions can be found on the Shop Wizard as a buyable.

    [x] Special Events
As I went through the New Features archives I picked up that there was a "Plushie Paint Brush special", which means that if you entered your name in the draw, you could be in for a chance of getting a Plushie Paint Brush! (So that explains why it's Special!) However, nowadays there aren't any special events for paint brushes or anything else for that matter :(

You can also get paint brushes from the referral program: 50 referrals will get you a random basic coloured paint brush and 100 referrals will get you an "exotic coloured" paint brush.

    [x] Trading Post
Useful for all types - buyable and unbuyable :D This is a bit like auctions, only that you trade with items, but you can trade neopoints as well.
