Welcome

Updates - Cleared every month.

May 14, 2012 The Altador Cup is starting up soon! Check it out here! I also updated the teams. Some of their positions may be a little off, but I'll fix it when TNT releases all of the data.

March 3-18, 2012 Spent time updating the site. I reorganized it, edited the text and images, and - yup! New layout! Layout V3: Desert Sands. Just in time for the AC season. SELF REMINDER: YOU NEED TO FIX SOME OF THE IMAGES ONCE THE AC ROLLS AROUND.

COMMUNITY NOTICE: I'll need some help to make your experience at this guide the best! I'm looking for some missing information that I need to make this guide as detailed as possible. I need:
  • Users who can test the site layout in Safari and Opera. A screenie of the layout and a detailed description of any errors would be helpful.
  • The names of team chatgroups. Meaning, chatgroups organized by the fans of the AC teams where users can find their fellow teammates. Please see the each of the teams' pages to see what I'm missing.
Help is always appreciated! Please Neomail Snowflower if you're able to contribute. :)

Welcome to Snowflower's Guide to the Altador Cup! I'm Snowflower, the owner and creator of the guide. This page was a very, very long task to complete, taking about a year. I began to create this page during Altador Cup V, and finished just in time for AC VI, on May 4th, 2011. It was released on the same day. I thank everyone who supported me during the process, and those who continue to support me. ^_^

The layout is best viewed in IE, Chrome, and Firefox, but I'm not sure what other browsers it works in. If you're using Opera or Safari, please let me know how the layout looks! A screenie of the site would be helpful.

How do I navigate the site? Pick from one of the options from the navigation above. "Daily coverage" will take you to day-to-day updates on the tournament during the Altador Cup. "The Tournament" will take you to guides about the basics, the games, and other important parts of the AC. "Teams" will take you to information pages on different teams, and "sitely" will bring you to my sitely section, where you'll find my affies, listers, buttons, and credits. C:

I don't understand something/I can't access something/SOMETHING IS WRONG! Just send a Neomail to chinesekoi22 with whatever troubles you.

Can I chat with you? Sure! I'll try to get back to you. :) But please, do not Neofriend me unless we've had an actual conversation.

Who made the layout? I made the layout, with the help of Details for the texture in the banner, Background Bonanza for the picture of the Lost Desert flag, and 49 Days for the backgrounds. More credits can be found here.

the tournament

The Altador Cup or AC (not air conditioning) began in June of 2006, shortly after the Altador Plot ended. The tournament usually lasts from June until July, and consists of eighteen teams, as listed below. The first game only included sixteen teams, since Shenkuu and Moltara hadn't been discovered yet. It has continued every year since, with six tournaments taking place since it was first introduced.
When you see a banner on the front page stating that the Altador Cup is here, that's your cue to sign up and choose a team! Once you choose, help your team down the road to victory by playing the tournament games! Although Yooyuball is the main event, I recommend playing all of the games a little bit to help your team excel in all of the categories.

Yooyuball

Yooyuball is the main event of the Altador Cup. In the game, the players of each team are running around with indented rectangular dishes in which the Yooyu is carried around the court. The Yooyu is then deposited into the opposing team's goal. In this way, Yooyuball sort of resembles the real-life game of lacrosse.

Signing Up

Before you can start to play, you have to sign up for a team. You can tell when sign ups are open by looking at the front page. A banner will normally appear announcing that the Altador Cup is on its way and that you should start signing up for a team. Here is an example of the banner from ACVI:

When you click on the banner, you'll be taken to a page similar to the image below. It might be a bit different because at the time I took this screenie, I had already signed up.

Here you can look at all of the bios for the different teams. (You can also view my versions of the teams' information by clicking on the "Teams" link in the navigation and selecting a team of your choice.) After choosing your team, you'll be able to practice all of the games before the actual tournament against a team of jelly Chias from that Jelly World place that everyone seems to think exists... *cough* Anyway... These games don't harm you if you do poorly; however, they don't improve your final score either.

The Beginning

Before the game starts, two buttons will appear, allowing you to choose which side of the field you'd like to be on. You can start on the left side and try to score in the right goal, or vice versa.

After that, you can choose one of three different formations for your team. You can have your team captain in front of the rest of your players; two in front of two; or three in front of one.

Once you choose these two formations, you'll see these two commentators:

Although it might get a bit tedious, I recommend reading through their dialogue the first time you face any of the teams. The commentators tend to occasionally let it slip what the opposing team's strengths and weaknesses might be, and you should keep these in mind as you play.

And now you're ready to enter the stadium!

Controls

To move your team, you use the W A S D keys on the keyboard, or you can use your mouse to move them. Pressing the arrow keys or moving the mouse at the start of a game will set that to be the controls for the rest of the game. This is permanent until the game ends, so be careful! (You can, however, pick which you'd like to use in other games. It's not for the entire tournament, in other words.) To switch players, you click the left mouse button on the mouse to toggle to the player nearest the Yooyuball. If you're using the keyboard, then it auto-switches. To select your goalkeeper in keyboard mode, press the 'L' or 'V' key. In mouse mode, click inside your goal. Pressing the 'Shift' key will move all of your team members into their original position, or the position you chose before the game even started (only if you're using the keyboard). Holding the left mouse button/spacebar will send your Yooyuball further when you throw it. You can also tap the spacebar/left mouse button to steal the ball from the opposing team. For example:

You might be asking, "What is all this talk about Yooyus? What is a Yooyu?!" The Yooyu is an Altadorian Petpet that is used as the playing piece in Yooyuball. You play with seven different types of Yooyus: Regular, Fire, Snow, Darigan, Faerie, Mutant, and Clockwork. Scroll over their pictures to see a description of what each does.

Scoring Goals

For most Yooyuballs, like Regular, Snow, and Clockwork, I like to move my scorer to just a little below the center of the net and score, like so:

But for the Faerie Yooyuball, I usually move to the direct center and score. I don't fill my power bar up all the way, just to about the center:

This doesn't always work, so if this isn't helping, then just click around trying to get it into the goal. ^_^

For the Darigan Yooyu, I move below the goal and above the bottom corner, and press the spacebar. There's a good chance that it'll either go directly into the net, or bounce off the bottom side of the stadium and into the net. On the other hand, it could go behind or in front of you as well. This works more effectively if you have the powerup that makes your goal bigger (more on that toward the bottom of this section):

Again, if this isn't working for you, then just click around trying to get it into the goal.

For the Fire Yooyu, use the same scoring strategy as the Regular, Snow, and Clockwork Yooyus, but pass the ball to your teammates very often. You'll have to, quite literally, fight fire with fire; the Fire Yooyu is fast, so you will have to be fast too. Your goalie isn't very good at blocking Yooyus, and by the time the ball gets there, the autoselect hasn't kicked in and there's a good chance it'll end up in your goal. The other team's players are also constantly on top of you, so that doesn't help either. Just keep passing it between your members to prevent all of this.

As for the Mutant Yooyu, just try your best to score.

Powerups

There are also powerups found throughout the game:

Name Picture Description
Speed Boost Gives you, quite obviously, a speed boost.
Freeze Opponent Freezes all of the other team's players.
Mystery Powerup Oooh... mysterious. It makes your teammates bigger.
Goal Expansion
Makes the other team's goal bigger, and thus making it easier for you to score. Drag and drop the image on the bottom to make it bigger.

And that concludes this very long part of the guide. :) If you have any questions, always feel free to Neomail chinesekoi22. ^_^

Slushie Slinger

In this game, you control the Tuskaninny who serves slushies to hungry customers waiting at the counters. Each wants a specific slushie: Chokato, Zeenana, and what appears to be either Tweezleberry or Aubergine. As you can see, on the right hand wall are three slushie machines. To get a slushie, use your right arrow key to turn towards the machines and use the up or down arrow keys to get to the machine that contains the customer's desired slushie.

Press the space bar to fill your cup with the slush, then turn back toward the counters. Use the up or down keys again to get to the end of the counter your customer is standing at. Press the space bar again to send the slushie sliding over to them. You're going to want to try to do this as quickly as possible, because the customers constantly move down the counters toward you.

After it gets to them, they'll begin to drink the slushie.

Once they reach the end of the counter, they'll leave. When they've finished drinking their slushie, the customer will send the empty cup back to you. Using the same controls you used to send the slushie over, get to the end of the counter collect the cup before it hits the floor. The only difference from sending the cup over is that you don't have to press the space bar to collect it.

scoring

When you send a slushie to a customer and it matches what they asked for, you get 5 points. If you send a slushie that they didn't ask for, you get 2 points. Collecting any empty cups will earn you 3 points. If you fail to collect an empty cup, you lose a life. (Your lives are represented by the five green slushie cups at the top of the screen.) You also lose a life when a customer gets to the end of the counter and leaves the store.

MAKE SOME NOISE!!!

This will be a very short section of the guide. Make Some Noise is a pretty simple game: You're given two different letter keys to press on your keyboard. Your goal is to fill up the meter all the way to the dark red wedge by pressing the keys as fast as you can. Pressing them alternatively or at the same time both work, so pick whichever works best for you.

Here is where you meet the famous Crazed Techo Fan, who is sporting your team's jersey. As the meter fills up, he'll cheer louder and louder until you reach the red wedge.

Sometimes, other keys will appear at the top of your screen for you to press for bonus points. Try your best to get these.

If you want to end the game before the 30 second time limit is up, just press the space bar. That's it! Good luck!

Shootout Showdown

This is another relatively easy game. Now, you must score goals without the goalie (a Jelly Chia) catching it and throwing it back. All you need is your space bar and arrow keys!

Press the space bar to fill up the meter, which is circled in blue. This will give you more power. To aim the Yooyuball, use the left or right arrow keys to shift it. When you're where you want to send the Yooyuball, press the spacebar. When you're aiming, I recommend moving it all the way to the left or right and scoring a goal when the goalie leaves, but you can do it any way you want.

Above the goal is a scoreboard with your time (circled in green), how many shots you've taken, and how many shots you've actually scored (both circled in yellow). You're going to want to try to have the same amount of shots taken as shots scored.

And that's it! Onto the teams!

teams

Here, you'll find bios of all the teams. This includes team weaknesses, team members, and popular chatgroups for you to join during the season. Just click on one of the teams to get started! :) Also, some team members have been given awards in past Altador Cup tournaments. Although this no longer occurs, you can still check to see who was awarded what at this page. (Due to space, I made a separate section for them rather than putting them with the teammates themselves.)

Staff Tournament

In this year's staff tournament, you must choose staff members from different teams and combine them to make one large team that you are the captain of! At the end of each week, on Friday, you are awarded points based on how well your members played. The better they play, the higher your points. These points also count toward your prize shop points.

The staff members are divided into three groups: Goalies, Defenders, and Forwards. You have to pick one goalie, two defenders, and two forwards.

Forwards

Comastar - Comastar represents Brightvale this year.

Night Owl - Night Owl is a new part of TNT, playing for Darigan Citadel.

DJ Skellington - DJ Skellington represents Halloween To- I mean, the Haunted Woods.

Viola - Viola is the forward representing Krawk Island.

Jimmy James - Jimmy James plays for Team Maraqua this year.

Dragona - Dragona plays for a team where you'll need a lot of socks- Terror Mountain!

Squiggles - One of the newer staff members. Squiggles plays as a forward and represents Team Tyrannia.

Defenders

El Picklesaur - Here, we have El Picklesaur playing for Altador!

Pie - Pie sports her new Faerieland uniform as their defender.

Mr. Insane - Mr. Insane here plays for Kiko Lake. *Cheese rainbows!

Undutchable - Playing as a defender, Undutchable supports Team Kreludor.

Dirigibles - On the team that won ACV, we have Dirigibles!

Breik - A Meridell supporter, Breik playeth as a defender.

Bancha Ninja - Bancha Ninja is Shenkuu's staff player.

Goalies

SeñorMalo - Playing for Team Moltara, SeñorMalo is one of the goalies.

Twitterpate - Twitterpate returns to Mystery Island for another year!

Socktastic - Another sock-loving staff member, Socktastic plays for Roo Island.

Snarkie - Snarkie returns this year as a Virtupets supporter and a goalie.

Picking a team is simple: Visit the main Altador Cup page, click on the link that says "Staff Tournament." Pick your team by clicking the staff members, then clicking "Add Player." And you're done!

Ranks

Ranks are gained by playing Slushie Slinger, Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, or Shootout Showdown and sending your score. Each game awards you a certain amount of points. Though nobody is quite sure how many points each game awards, the amount of games to play before your rank increases have been found. The easiest way to gain ranks, though, is to just play Yooyuball; it gives you the most points.
In order for your game to count, you must send your score, just like with any other Neopian game.

To make things clear, you do NOT have to play all of these games to get to your desired rank. For rank five, you could win a total of 275 YYB games OR play a total of 550 Slushie Slinger games.

Beginner - Everyone starts on this rank, no matter what.

Trophies

You are no longer able to claim these trophies if you did not participate in any of these tournaments. Hover over the images to see what each was awarded for.

TNT made such a varied amount of trophies that I won't be able to show them all here. These are the basic designs for each of them. However, the logo and color depended on your team and its placing. Virtupets got gold, Krawk Island got silver, Kreludor got bronze, and the rest of the teams were awarded wooden trophies. If you wish to view each trophy, copy the image URL into your browser and replace /[TEAM NAME]-# with your team's name, with no spaces or caps, and a number 1 through 4. Names like the Haunted Woods and Krawk Island would be hauntedwoods and krawkisland.

Prizes

After the finals have been announced, you'll be awarded your trophy, the site theme, and the prize shop will open. You buy prizes with different ammounts of points that you've collected from playing games and from the staff tournament. Prizes in the shop vary, but always include a Yooyu of some sort, and a paint brush. The brush is usually based on the winning team of last year; for example, Krawk Island won the AC IV, and the year after, a Pirate Paint Brush appeared in the shop. These prizes are always among the most expensive items there.

About Me

Hi, I'm Snowflower. :) I started to create this page during the Altador Cup V, and finished just in time for AC VI. @_@ Neomail me to chat sometime if you want. :) I apologize if this guide was poorly written/boring. XD My favorite Yooyuball teams are the Haunted Woods, Darigan Citadel, and Shenkuu, with Shenkuu being my absolute favorite. :D Here is my userlookup and my about me page. This layout that you're currently viewing is Layout V3: Desert Sands. So far, I only know that it works in Firefox and IE.

About the Page

This page was a very, very long task to complete, taking about a year. It was finally finished and released on May 4th, 2011, less than a month before ACVI. I thank everyone who supported me during the process, and those who continue to support me. ^_^ Here are a few thumbnails of nice comments that I've recieved and would like to acknowledge, along with our, not first, but opening layout. XD

----

I always love to hear feedback about my site. If you see something that you think needs to be fixed, or if you have a better way of explaining something, I'll be happy to take a look. :)

Thanks...

I couldn't have made this guide as successful as it is without some assistance! I'd like to thank quite a few people for helping me do this:

  • Firstly, thanks to TNT for coming up with the Altador Cup! :)
  • Thanks to both Jellyneo and Sunnyneo for helping me find the rank calculations (how many games of YYB, Slushie Slinger, etc, you need to play before you get to a certain rank)
  • Thanks to The (Jellyneo) Book of Ages for helping me with information such as team and player awards, best/worst rankings, and some Altador Cup history.
  • Thanks to Neodex for helping me find the ACI trophies
  • Thanks to Dr. Sloth's Image Emporium for helping me find... Well, most of the team images.
  • Also, thanks to the people who made all the pixels and other useful resources used on this site. (listed in the sitely section)
Again, thank you to everyone here! ^_^
