Established on January 20, 2013 and still going strong, Impressions is where I strive to create high-quality petpage layouts that satisfy my clients' needs by providing my best service and support. May 22 and 23, 2013

  • Hello everyone! It seems like it's been ages since the last time I've updated, and I'm terribly sorry for my absence. School has been dying down lately as the end of the school year nears (yay, only about one more week!) and I've been focusing more on final exams. I'll be officially finishing my year on Monday, June 3rd, so expect to see me update a lot more often after then!
  • I have the event all planned out and I'm stoked to get it started. It will probably be up sometime during the first week of June, so keep your eyes open! The event will kick off the opening of multiple bundle spots.
  • I've made some adjustments around the site according to the suggestions made by Tina at Intuition. I got the review a while ago, but I'm a terrible person and didn't implement many things until now. D:
  • Kate did me the favor of an affiliate sweep, bless her. I have 4 spots 2 spots that need filling, so feel free to send me a neomail if you'd like to affiliate with Impressions! Before you neomail me, though, please take in consideration that I actually enjoy communicating with my affiliates, so if you're unwilling or uninterested in doing so, please don't request to be affiliates.   • I took my AP Language and Composition test today, and I think I did really well! I'm hoping I got a 5, but I'm almost positive that I got a 4. On Wednesday I took the AP Calculus BC test, and that was pretty horrible. I'm not expecting anything higher than a 2 on that.
  • In site-related news, I finally got around to adding the past layouts. Sorry it took me so long! Fortunately I only had two layouts that needed to be displayed.
  • I have about about two and a half more weeks of school! This meaning I'm going to get started on Impressions' event soon. I'm super stoked!

  • Hi everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates here lately. It's been very stressful recently with upcoming tests and all that jazz. I cannot wait until school ends at the end of the month so I can focus so much more of my attention to the site... and an event that will be hosted. I think it's going to be extremely fun, so keep an eye out when June rolls around!

  • Grey's layout is done! It'll be added to the portfolio as soon as Grey picks it up. Finally, all requests have been filled. Thank you guys so much for being so patient with me. I know that one took a very, very, unnecessarily long time. I promise I'll be better in the future. That being said, layout requests will not open until June for reasons already discussed in the archives. Sorry! Meanwhile, take a look at some of the gorgeous layouts being produced at my darling sister site, Essence, Stormy Nights, Pichi Pichi, and Venice!

Because of my busy schedule, I would not be able to finish requests in a timely manner (for example, Grey, who requested a Stroodle layout a month ago, still has not gotten her request yet). Therefore, I think it'd best that I hold off on opening layout requests until the summer when school ends. Otherwise, you guys might have to wait a month for each of your requests to be completed, and that isn't fair at all. Sorry for the inconvenience!   • What do you think of the new look? I should have been doing Grey's request, but instead I made a new layout for Impressions, partly because I'm still waiting on a reply from her just to confirm her wishes. Anyway, I thought a change was due around here, especailly since I'm the type of person who gets sick of things after very short amounts of time. Originally I planned an all-CSS layout for Impressions, but then one night I though a bokeh background would look too cute, so that had to be done. I'm really pleased by the result. I love simple things, and teh color scheme is one of my favorites. I love cool colors. Send me a neomail and tell me what you think! Also, if you see any errors around the site, please, please please let me know and I will shower you with love.
  • The portfolio will be moved to a separate petpage to open up more space on the site. I'm working on that right now.
  • 2 new extras: Impressions now offers banner and icon requests! I figured that with the amount fo neomails I get from discouraged slowpokes (and I say that endearingly) who can't request a layout fast enough, I could at least offer some other services to their advantages. I also would like to sharpen my skills, especially with icons. This is an opportunity! For now, requests are closed. But they will open tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Terms of Service

Please read the terms below carefully before proceeding to request a layout from me. And yes, even the guidelines.

Guidelines

  1. All layouts created by Impressions are tested in Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox for compatibility. They are tested in Internet Explorer for accessibility. If you primarily use Internet Explorer, I suggest you do not request a Kaboodle or Stroodle.
  2. Please be as specific as possible in your request. Vague requests will not be accepted because they do not point me to any directions! There is no limit to how many neomails your form ends up being. The more information you provide, the easier it is for me to satisfy you. Remember, I do not take requests on a "first come, first serve" basis. Therefore, please take your time in making your form as concise as possible.
    • Diagrams and outlines are always considerably helpful to me, so if you have an idea of how you would like your layout to be organized, please create one, paste it on a blank petpage, and include the link in the "Other" section of the form. Note: This is not mandatory. For examples of some diagrams, refer to here.
    • If you have any difficulty understanding any parts of the forms, read the form guide and view the example forms. Also try reading the FAQ. If, after reading both these pages AND the FAQ, you still do not understand some concepts, do not be afraid to send me a neomail.
  3. I will update you regularly on the progress of your request. It is during these updates that you may suggest any changes. Please do not suggest changes after I have completed the layout!

Rules

  1. Please do not remove the credit. At the very least, it is polite to give recognition where it is due.
  2. I will not accept requests from sites that offer premade petpage layouts or petpage requests. Nor will I accept requests for pet applications. However, I will happily oblige to create a layout for all other site types (including personal pages!).
  3. Do not request from me if you have already requested from, or are on the waiting list of, another layout request site.
  4. You may only request one petpage from me once every three months. If you have thoroughly read the rules, add "Rudy" somewhere in your form.
  5. Requests for The Complete Kaboodle must be from sites at least four months old to ensure there is enough content to be reorganized. After all, it is a revamp bundle.
  6. It is mandatory that you use your request. Although this may seem harsh, each one of my layouts consumes a considerable amount of my time and effort. Furthermore, considering I involve my client with every aspect of their design, there should be no reason it is not used. Therefore, all clients that fail to use their layouts will be blacklisted and banned from requesting from me again.

Impressions is similar to review sites in requests, except instead of rubrics, we have bundles! This system creates a way for me to give my clients what they need most, while taking into consideration the amount of time I have to complete requests. It's beneficial for me and you!

Version 2: Blue Skies are Calling
This layout was up for about two months, and it was what celebrated Impressions' grand opening! I absolutely adored this layout. I thought a continuous layout would allow me a lot more creativity and design opportunities than a "one-page" layout would, so I went with it. Fortunately, I was correct! This layout was inspired by Nienkes gorgeous layout for Details. With her permission, I was able to add my own flair to the idea. I luckily stumbled upon the background for this layout from visualjenna-stock at deviantArt. I'm so grateful that I did because the background was what really pulled it together!
Version 1: Simple Teal
This layout was all-CSS, except for the Impressions' logo on the upper left-hand corner. I liked the color scheme of the layout, especially since teal and burgundy are two of my favorite colors, but the layout was short-lived because it was, in my eyes, too simple. It got boring after a couple of days, so I decided to scrap it. This layout was up before Impressions officially opened.

She took something dated and turned it into something much more elegant, simplistic, yet effective. Her coding is so clean and easy to use, and it's hard to deny it's not visually pleasing. Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the questions that visitors most commonly ask me. Please read them over carefully before sending me a neomail.

  1. When will requests be open again? Requests are generally open depending on my schedule. I try to be as punctual as I can with the estimated times of each bundle, but if I know that I will not meet a date, then requests will probably not be open. Please check the site's updates or archives to see when requests may be open again.
  2. Can you notify me about the next time you open requests? Though the idea is nice, I am unfortunately not able to do this because it gives you an unfair advantage over other visitors. Sorry, but you'll just have to visit the site occasionally to check on the request status. However, my updates always tell visitors ahead of time when requests might be open again, so reading them is always in your best interest.
  3. I love your petpages! Can I use your coding and credit you? It depends on which petpage's coding you would like to use. Please neomail me the link and the specific snippet that you'd like to use, if you have one.
  4. I love your bundles idea! Can I use a similar organization and credit you? I'm flattered, but I wasn't the first one to use an organization of bundles, as Nicole and a few others have had bundles in their layout requests before me. Therefore, you can use the idea, but credit is not needed (to any of us)!
  5. I know that if I request a petpage from someone else, I can't request the same petpage from you, but what if I request one petpage from you and another from someone else? This is fine, as long as the petpages are different.
  6. So-and-so's layout and coding look a lot like yours. What will you do? I will contact this person myself, but if their coding does turn out to be my own and they've used it without my permission, then I will report them. Please do not contact this person yourself, but thank you for informing me.

Form Guide and Explanation

This page was made for the purpose of guiding visitors through the forms, should there be any attribute or question that they do not completely understand. If you still have unanswered questions after reading this guide, take a look at the examples of completed forms. If even after then you do not understand something, send me a neomail.

  • Images to Use - The images are the part of the layout that capture a visitor's attention and bring life to the design. When done right, altered and edited images can make a big difference in whether or not your site is viewed as "high quality," and they leave a lasting impression on the visitors.

    When choosing images, I keep in mind colors that I would like to use in my layout, or an overall theme. Sometimes, I'll simply "wing it" and pick whatever image looks the most appealing to me.

    Things to consider:

    • Is the image too cluttered? If it is, you may not want to use it as a layout. Some examples of cluttered images are: this and this. Though these images can definitely be manipulated to look nice in a layout, generally, they are considered "too busy" and thus not popular choices for one. However, this should never stop you from requesting a layout using a certain image if it's one you truly love! After all, an experienced designer will know how to make it work.
    • Does the image allow itself to be manipulated? Some images cannot be used to do very much with, for example: this. You want to avoid picking an image with limited editing options, because your layout will suffer.
    • Does it fit your site theme? If your site has a specific theme, like Winter or Halloween, then it's best to only pick images that match that theme.

    • Some great sites to find images at are Drsloth.com, Background Bonanza, and Neopets Backgrounds.

  • Color Scheme is as important as the images that you pick out! You want the colors of your site to please your visitors, not blind them or strain their eyes. A common mistake when picking colors is only picking favorites. This limits your color palette extremely, and sometimes leads to clashing schemes. This should generally be avoided. Do not be afraid to experiment with different schemes!

    A great site that helps with determining colors is Kleur, a color palette site that can probably save lives.

  • Navigation type - Navigation is one of the most important parts of your layout, because it is what visitors use the most. Navigation can be styled to look beautiful using CSS and/or graphic design, but it must also remain simple and legible enough for visitors to benefit from.

    Impressions offers requesters the choice of choosing whether to have image or CSS-based navigation.

    • Image-based navigation is what it sounds like. Each link is an individual image. Sometimes, hover links are added to make the images glow or pop when hovered over. Some examples of image-based navigation are found here and here.
    • CSS-based navigation usually does not include images at all, but that does not mean it cannot be beautiful. I actually prefer CSS-based navigation, because it's quicker to code and really gives sites a simple, yet elegant touch.

    Things to consider:

    • Is it necessary? Do you really need fancy, eye-catching image navigation or will CSS suffice?
    • What type would look best with the site? You can usually visualize what you'd like the navigation to look like, and more often than not, CSS does its job well! However, if your layout is aiming at a fancy, complex theme, maybe you should go with image navigation.

  • Sub-Navigation is a form of CSS navigation, and it's a favorite of mine because it is extremely useful! There are many forms sub-navigation can take, including drop-down menus (like Neopets' very own) and anchored ones, where they "open" a section for other links. Some examples of anchored sub-navigation can be found here and here. Though these two versions seem quite different, they both work in the same manner. They're just different illusions!

  • Continuous Layouts are standard layouts that get longer and longer as more content is added to it, creating a scrollbar. Continuous layouts can still contain anchors that jump from section to section, but they generally do not contain many "different pages."

    Generally, layouts that are continuous layouts do not contain too much content that would cause the scrollbar to shrink dramatically. Nobody likes excessive scrolling!

  • Anchored Layouts are misnamed, but are generally defined as the layouts that give the illusion of "many pages within a page." Though it really is only one page, anchored layouts "trick" the eyes into seeing a new "page" pop up when a link is clicked.

    Anchored layouts are mainly what are used for sites on Neopets, because they are highly organized and compact. Lots of "pages" can be fitted into an anchored layout, and it will never look cluttered!

*Color scheme: I don't have a color scheme in mind, except please use soft, subtle colors instead of overly bright ones. Otherwise, just use the colors of whichever of the three images you pick, please!

Anchored or scrolling layout?: Anchored, please!

*Any specific directions for me?: The main content should have either a white background or a transparent one, but you should still be able to clearly read the content. I'd like it to be AT LEAST 600px wide and 500px long. I would like the navigation to be fixed and centered at the top of the page, so when you scroll, it "follows" the page. The sub-navigation should be in a separate box, similar to how you did /~loveish and /~inogen. I want that box to the right of the main content. The rest is up to you!
