Hello there guest, and welcome to Operation: N.A.M.E. I'm Tash and I opened this site on August 9, 2010. Here you will find tips for naming your new pets, as well as some available names that I have come up with.

So, what exactly is Operation: N.A.M.E.? Well... it stands for Names Are Meaningful and Elegant.

Introduction

You may come across the terms 'well named,' 'badly named,' 'decently named,' etc. (abbreviated WN, BN, DN, etc.). Usually 'well named' is used to describe pets with a capitolized, somewhat short, and pronouncable name with no underscores or numbers.

What does 'well named' mean to you?

This is something you need to ask yourself when creating a new pet. A name should be something you like, not anyone else. If the pet's name has meaning to you, you are more likely to want to keep him or her.

So use numbers and/or underscores if you want to! Don't let anyone tell you what to name your pet, or that he or she is 'badly named!' If you like the name, that's all that matters! After all, my first two pets's names have numbers and underscores, because that's what I wanted.

Tips

The most frustrating part of naming a pet is when you have a perfect name thought out, and you're all excited, and you go to create the pet, only to find out that the name is taken.

Before creating the pet, search the name to make sure it isn't taken. If it is, the best way to modify the name while keeping the original idea is to use different letters that make the same sounds.

Here are some letter combinations that can be use in place of each other:
ie, y, ii, ee, ye
x, ks, eks
s, z, es
u, oo, eau

Using double vowels or adding silent letters (h, gh, n, etc.) helps, too.

Customs

For customs, I need as much information as possible about the pet the name is for. Any specifics you want, mention them in your message, or I'll just assume things and you might not end up with the name you wanted.

Site Names

Having troubles finding a name for your new site? Believe me, I know how that feels. I had the same problem with this site and my old review site (it's closed now). The only time I thought up a name quickly was for my adoption agency (Sunset Adoptions, check it out here).

Some ideas for creating a site name:
use words that describe the site/theme/idea
use words from different languages
put an adjective in front of the type of site
use your name
make up a new word
use song lyrics
base it off a TV show/movie name

Some tips when naming a site:
make it pronouncable, especially for foreign and made-up words
don't make it too long
easy to remember, but not forgettable
