Getting Started

What to collect?
The first thing to remember about collecting is that it is all about having fun! In order to have a successful collection you will need to enjoy what you are collecting. As you will see below, there are any number of things that can be collected on neopets, some are more difficult than others, and all can end up being very expensive.

Things to collect

Avatars
This is one of the most common types of collections within neopia. Every user comes equipped with a set of "default" chat avatars that are available as soon as your account is created, however TNT frequently releases "secret" avatars than can be obtained by completing any number of tasks. Different avatars range in difficulty to obtain and can go from incredibly easy (with just clicking on a certain link to obtain) to incredibly difficult or expensive. Find enough secret avatars and could earn a trophy for being on the high score list (link).

Stamps
This type of collection is relatively easy to get started in but can become incredibly expensive. Every user comes equipped with their very own stamp album. Stamps can be purchased in Neopia Shops, acquired from dailies, found in random events, and purchased from other users. Once a stamp is in your inventory you can place in in your album for other users to see. Beware that while many stamps are rather cheap and easy to come by, some are incredibly rare, and as a result very expensive. If you collect enough stamps to earn a spot on the high score list (link) you will receive a trophy.

Gallery
This is probably the broadest example of collecting. Users have the option of creating a gallery to display various items in for other users to view. The best part of galleries is that they are totally customizable to your own sensibilities! Users typically choose a theme to build their gallery around. Since TNT is constantly releasing new items, and retiring old ones (making the rarity of items very fluid) it will be nearly impossible to ever fully complete your gallery (it will always be a work in progress). It is best to pick a theme that is specific but not too broad, as this will help keep costs down and allow you to have a more complete gallery. General themes such as "plushies" are too broad as there are thousands of plushies in neopia, try breaking your theme down into a smaller subset of the general theme (example, wintery plushies). As with any form of collecting, expect that some items will be cheap and easy to come by, while others will be extremely rare and expensive, so make sure that you are sure that you will enjoy the theme you choose. If you pick one theme and then several months later you will be very disappointed due to the wasted time, effort, and neopoints used to start your collection. In addition to adding items, you are able to customize the layout of your gallery to match your theme, and are able to enter your gallery into the Gallery Spotlight competition (link).

Kad Feeding
Kad feeding is a very popular activity among many neopian users. When you visit the Kadoatery (link) you will see numerous Kadoaties who are very hungry. The object of this game is to feed the Kad's what they are asking for. Doing so will give you are trophy on your userlookup (with a count of how many you have fed). Feed enough of these little guys and you can also earn a secret avatar. Once they have been fed, the Kad's will become hungry again at certain intervals and ask for more food. The items that are asked for range from cheap to very expensive, so if you want to feed them for cheap, be sure to check back at the right times, and be quick!

Neodeck Collecting
Similar to stamp collecting, each user gets their own NeoDeck to show off the cards that they collect over their time playing. They can be found in random events, purchased from Neopian shops, other users, and won from dailies. They range in rarity and price, so be prepared to spend a lot in an attempt to get as many as possible. If you collect enough cards, you can get on the high score list (link) and earn a trophy for your lookup!

Key Quest Tokens
Similar to Stamp collecting, each user has a Key Quest Token collector's case that show off the tokens they have available for use in the Key Quest game.

Trophy Collecting
Trophy collecting is exactly as it sounds, users may wish to try and earn as many trophies as possible for their user lookup. Trophies are awarded to the users with the top 17 scores in each game throughout neopia every night. You can only get one trophy for each game on your lookup, so if you are one of the top scores on multiple days, or multiple months it will not increase your trophy count, however you can upgrade your trophies (from bronze to silver and silver to gold) by getting a higher placed score on the list. Trophies are also given out for site events (wars, games challenges, etc), Spotlight competitions, creative competitions, and certain battledome events.

Gourmet Club
The Gourmet Club is reserved for neopets who have a refined taste in food. Feed your pets food items that have a rarity index of between 90 and 100. For each one of these items your pet eats, they will receive one point. Earn enough points to get on the high score list (link) and your pet will receive a shiny trophy for it's lookup. As these items are all rare (to incredibly rare) many of them are incredibly expensive and difficult to find.

Pet Intelligence
You can increase your pets intelligence by reading them books. If you read your pet enough books, you can get on the high scores list (link) and when a trophy for your pets lookup. As your pets intelligence grows, they may become bored with certain that they feel are too easy to read. It is not currently known what intelligence level will result in a pet refusing to read certain books, it appears to be random.

Battledome
Pets can be trained to become stronger when fighting in the battledome (link). This can be accomplished in numerous ways, by utilizing the two training schools (links), faerie quests, random events, certain foods (neggs, etc), and the lab ray. Many incredibly dedicated battlers attempt to get a very high HSD (Hit points+Strength+Defence). There is not currently any trophies provided for this, however many view it a status symbol by having an incredibly strong pets. Other users attempt to earn high numbers of wins, and a high percentage of wins within the one player battledome.

Pet Collecting
This has become a new and increasingly popular aspect on neopets. Users create, paint, and trade neopets to attempt and gain incredibly rare/expensive pets. Unconverted pets are very valuable (not in terms of neopoints as it is against the rules to sell pets) but they are often traded for converted pets with either very high battledome stats, expensive species (krawks/draiks/etc), expensive colors, very well named (real words, no numbers, etc) or sometimes all of these. Highly aged (8-12 years old) pets are also becoming increasingly popular. The value of any given pet however is ultimately relative, as a certain species/color/name/etc may be more valuable to one user than it is to another. There are no trophies or awards given out for collecting pets, only the admiration of your fellow users is at stake.
