WELCOME

This is certainly odd. Just a moment ago, you were walking through the Haunted Woods. And they were definitly the Haunted Woods, all dark, scraggly trees, fog, and eerie moans. But you've reached a house...the back of a house, and instead of finding a carefully tended swamp, you've discovered a vast garden.

It's strange...the dirt has been carefully raked into even rows, and the plants poking their leaves above the surface are green and vibrant. Small cards denote each plant's identity, and contain a small picture of the plan in its full growth state. Low benches are scattered everywhere, and off to the far right is a well-kept, recently painted shed.

Pretty, huh?

The voice makes you whirl around in surprise. Standing not far behind you is a faerie Bori, bright blue with a pale face, wearing what looks like a modified Blechy Hat.

Sorry, did I surprise you? My name's Valor, and this's my garden! She studies you for a moment. Would you like to come in? It looks like you could use something to eat.

Well, you are hungry, and the Bori doesn't seem like a Haunted Woods denezin. You follow her along a mosaic stone path to the back of a monstrous house, and as you walk, Valor gives you a few warnings.

This'll sound strange, but don't eat any of the plants. They're herbs, so they might have some, ah, unintended consequences. And keep your feet away from the Dragonbud; it's a way better pest-killer than that nasty petpet spray, but it's shredded a couple people's shoes before.

STORY

Don't worry, my history's not a big long story. I'm the only one here who hasn't got their own enormous history, but that's okay with me. It makes guests stay a little longer, really.

So, I was created by a human called sabered__dragon; I just call her Saber. She made me as a red Bori, and said that she'd wanted to have a Bori of her own for a long time!

For a long time, I was happy being Saber's only pet, but whenever she left, I was on my own. I really wished I had a brother or sister or even a petpet, but Saber said we didn't have that kind of money. To get over my boredom, I started wandering around the woods outside our house. I didn't really know I was supposed to be scared of the Woods; maybe that's why nothing bad ever happened to me.

Well, one day Saber found out that I'd been visiting the forest. I thought she was going to be mad, but she wasn't; she gave me a book all about the Woods. I found a section on medicinal plants, and soon, I was collecting them and growing them in my own garden. Saber was really impressed, and she got me more books and scrolls about healing and about plants. And soon, I was helping injured petpets I found out in the Woods, and releasing them when they'd healed up.

But Saber knew I was still lonely, and she said she would try to get me a brother or sister as soon as we had the money. In the meantime, she took me to visit one of her friends and their pets. I had a great time- then Saber sent a letter from home saying once I came back, we would go to Neopia Central and either create or adopt a sibling!

I was almost home when I found a Darigan Kougra lying under a tree. She was a big Kougra, bigger than almost any Neopet I'd ever seen. Her fur was ruffled and dirty, and there were cuts all along her back and sides. She had a weird gold collar and bracelets on, kind of like a desert Kougra's, but darker and...just different. Her eyes were open, and they were pure red, which kind of freaked me out. But she looked injured, so I real quietly asked if she was okay. She didn't say anything, and that was when I got really scared- for her, though, not for me.

I ran ahead to get Saber. She realized right away that something was wrong, and when I told her what had happened, she followed me through the forest, to the injured Kougra. As a Draik, Saber was strong enough to get the Kougra back to the house. We found a Darigan Kimbi nearby, and even though it growled and snarled at us, it let us move the Kougra, and followed along behind us.

Saber and I took care of the Kougra's wounds, but even I was surprised at how fast they healed. The Darigan Kimbi stayed with her, and though he watched everything Saber and I did carefully, it never made a move to attack us.

One day, I came in to put some more balm on the places where the Kougra's cuts had been...and found her sitting up, looking out the -blocked- She turned toward me, and I froze; she was really scary, with her eyes glowing bright red.

Are you feeling better? I asked at last.

She blinked, once. What does it matter to you?

What do you mean, what's it matter? Me and Saber spent the past two weeks trying to help make you better!

You shouldn't have bothered, the Kougra snarled.

Why not? I'm a healer, it's what-

Suddenly, the Kougra pounced, landing right in front of me. Do you know what Ragnoarok is, little healer? she growled.

Rag..no..no. I don't know. But what's-

Ragnoarok is the end of the world. Destruction. Havoc. Chaos. Ragnoarok is my name.

But it's just a name! It doesn't mean anything!

The Kougra unfurled her wings, spreading them out wide. Thunder suddenly crashed outside, and rain slammed against the glass. It means everything, Ragnoarok said. I'm an instrument of death and destruction, and I'll be your death if I stay here.

There was something wierd about the way she said she'd be my death...like she wouldn't actually kill me, but something else might.

I took a wild guess. Is somebody after you?

More thunder crashed outside. Not someone, little healer. Something.

Well, my human's got a Draik form, and she can use swords, she can keep it away!

Ragnoarok shook her head, almost sadly. Nothing can stand against Loki. Not even the 'almighty' humans. It may not come soon, maybe not even in your life, but if it does, you and your precious human will die, little healer. And nobody else will die at Loki's hands because of me.

She strode past me, and I didn't know how to stop her- and suddenly, Saber was standing in front of her, just a human, but blocking the doorway. Valor, she said, Let me talk to Ragnoarok.

I don't know what Saber said, but she got Ragnoarok to agree to stay for a few days. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months...and then I realized I had a foster sister. Sure, she wasn't exactly someone to play with, or go explore with, but she was smart and interesting to talk to, and once Pruk, the Darigan Kimbi, got used to me, he was interesting to take for walks and such. And sometimes, Ragnoarok even came out and would watch me replant some herbs, and eventually come over and start silently helping.

It was about a year later when Saber came home with a big grin on her face. She was carrying a small cardboard box tied with a perriwinkle ribbon, and she said we were going on vacation. It would be just the two of us, of course; Ragnoarok's not real big on vacations.

We went to Neopia Central, and Saber took me to the Rainbow Pool, opened the box, and revealed a faerie paint brush. It had always been my wildest dream to be faerie, and on January 24th, 2009, that dream finally came true.

LIKES & DISLIKES

It's pretty safe to say I love healing. I like knowing I can help pets (or petpets) who're hurt feel better, and eventually get back to the lives they were living before they got hurt. It's a tough job, don't get me wrong, but there's a lot of satisfaction in it, too, and it gives me a lot of things to do when my human can't be around and Ragnoarok's being especially surly.

I really like dressing up, although I'm not like most pets who go run off to the mall to try on outfits all the time. I'm more practical than that- after all, I dig in the dirt all day! Really, I like dressing up in weird hats, and scarves, and cool gloves...I have what Saber calls "an ecclectic fashion sense", which sounds like a lot of fun to me!

Probably the one thing that annoys me most are people who overestimate magic. I mean, magic can be really useful, and I don't mind pets who're proud of what they can do. But what really gets on my nerves is when a wizard suddenly decides he can do anything with his powers, then goes around parading about how sad it must be for us pets without magic, who've gotta scrape out a living as mere mortals. It's maddening.

Can't forget about the petpets! Sure, there're some species who bite or chew or do unspeakable things on furniture, but most of them are really sweet, and a loyal petpet is worth a million Neopoints. I hope I can get a petpet of my own someday. Probably a faerie petpet, like me, or at least something with wings. I'd love a Gallion; aren't they cool?

FAMILY

Saber - Saber, short for sabered__dragon, is my human. Like a lot of humans in Neopia, Saber doesn't have to just be a human; anytime she wants, she can turn into a big, green quadruped Draik, or this part-Draik, part person thing! She knows how to use this double-pair of scimitars, too, which is kind of cool to watch...but I'm always a little worried she'll hurt herself. That's what a healer's supposed to do, I guess. Saber's probably my best friend in the house; you can actually talk to her about good stuff without getting some sarcastic comment in reply, like Ragnoarok...

Ragnoarok is sort of my foster-sister...she prefers the term "roommate." She's usually really quiet...she spends a lot of time reading, or just looking out the -blocked- Sometimes she'll come garden with me, but even then, it's quiet. I think she expects everyone to be scared of her, because she can be kinda mean, and she's a storm goddess. But so long as you don't do something stupid, like call her 'Raggy', there's not much creepy about her. She has a Darigan Kimbi named Pruk, but if you see him, watch out; sometimes, he bites.

Azoranolan's kinda my foster brother...except, he doesn't live with us. Azor's one of the nicest pets I've ever met though, don't let his mutant color freak you out! He's the bellringer in this really old-fashioned town called Androgard; they're really supersticious there, and they only let Azor staybecause he rings these "spirit bells" that're supposed to keep away ghosts. I really wish he'd just leave them and come stay with us, but he says he's got a 'duty' there...I don't think it's fair, though.

Balterya is the newest member of our little family. She's a quadruped Draik, a mutant-ish color with lots of purple stripes. She comes from a group of Draiks called the "Nareet Clan", but she got kicked out. Apparently, you're not supposed to use magic, and Balterya did that. Her wings were torn up while she was running, and even though I tried to heal them when she showed up, there're some things you just can't fix. I'm even more worried about her mentality, though- she thinks magic is dangerous, scary, even; but magic is really only dangerous if it's out of control, or if it's in evil hands.

Saving for Intrepid; story coming soon!

MY HOME

Everyone's always surprised when they find out where I live. A faerie Bori, in the Haunted Woods?

It really isn't so bad; we live in a nicer section of the Woods, where the forest's a little less spooky. I mean, we get a werelupe every now and then, but usually Ragnoarok and Saber get rid of them before I even realize there's one here. Not that I couldn't take care of one, of course- these claws aren't just for show!

Like most of the families around here, we have a mansion-style house. But it's not your typical boarded-up windows, chipped paint, creaking floorboards place. We don't have any ghosts, and Saber keeps everything maintained and neat.

Our yard is surrounded by a big iron fence, but it's really just to keep out the occasional monster, uninvited guests, and petpets who might try eating my herbs or the gardens. Saber also got a spell put on the gate, to keep out wandering ghosts.

And in the backyard is my herb garden, of course. And the kennel isn't far away. I don't think you saw it, but there's a little shed not too far from my herb garden. I keep the petpets I'm taking care of in there, so they'll be safe from any roaming predators. And anyways, they seem happier out in the shed than in the house.

HEALING

Well, obviously you know what healing is; fixing up wounds and such! But there's a lot more to healing than just that!

I basically divide healing into two types; magical, and natural. I think magical healing is pretty obvious; it uses spells to heal wounds, whether through a direct spell, or by enchanting a cream or something. Most magic is pretty species-specific, though, which's why there are so many different creams and such for different species.

Kougra Healing Potion, Gelert Healing Remedy, Lenny Healing Stone

There are all-purpose magic cures, like healing spells from Lesser and Greater Healing Scrolls, bags of Healing Dust, and Magical Healing Potions.

But I can't do magic. So I use natural healing, which's more all-purpose, but takes a little more advance work. Which's fine, really.

Basically, natural healing uses herbs and plants to create poultices, potions, bandages, and the like.

Being a natural healer means you need a lot of supplies. Mostly, you need herbs, because without the herbs, you can't make ointments, creams, potions, and medicinal teas. You also need stuff to take care of the herbs, places to grow it...and really, you need to read a lot.

A lot of pets are confused about why I do so much work, when I could 'just leave it to the wizards'. Hmph. Neopia's not made of wizards, and not all of 'em are really good at healing spells anyways.

That's not saying there aren't any healers out there; let me tell you about a couple famous healers.

Healing Springs Faerie
The best-known healer in all Neopia is probably the Healing Springs faerie! She has a magical fountain in Faerieland that'll cure pretty much any injury...just how much that injury'll heal is up to chance. That's one of the issues with magic; it's fickle.

Boraxis
Boraxis is another magical healer. He seems to stick to places like Meridell and Brightvale, and likes to help out travellers on quests and stuff. He's probably one of the most famous healers in Neopia- he's got his own trading card and a stamp!

Aurora the Healer
Aurora the Healer is a very mysterious figure; I've spent a lot of time trying to find out exactly who she- or he?- is. Most healers in combat groups don't double as warriors, so I'm guesing Aurora is the Shoyru in the picture. Whether she was a magical healer, or natural, I really don't know.

Basically, that's healing in a nutshell! But keep in mind, if you want to become a healer, you've gotta be careful. You need to do real serious research, for a really long time, because otherwise you could hurt someone even worse, just because you were ignorant. Healing's a calling, not a hobby, or a short-term game. You've gotta be serious about it.
