Have you ever wondered how the lab ray works? How it so mystically changes your pet with a seemingly random outcome, how it appears to 'hate you' and go for long stints without doing anything? Here's how;
Firstly, micro waves at 5M Ghz powered by the Neopets Ether are compressed into a firing chamber and released in the direction of your pet. When it hits them, molecularized pixels that form coding strings which define the way your pet looks start to vibrate violently. When their positions are irritated and interrupted, the strings shatter. As individual codes float around, the Neopets Visual System(NVS) will attempt to remedy the string by grabbing random pieces, chaining them to form a new pet.
Occasionally there are fluctuations in the Ether, causing an inconsistency of the wavespeed of the ray. Higher speed waves are stronger and cause more strings to break, and more drastic changes like species changes. Lower speed waves shatter less strings and cause minor changes, like status ups or downs. Ether level spikes are rare and account-dependent, which is why species changes rarely occur.
Ether level fluctuations cannot be predetermined or predicted. Experts, however, believe that there are several factors that influence the Neopets Ether level. This includes, but is not limited to; server load and temperature, data transfer rate between the user and the system, the level of intellectual debate occuring in the HC, and what beverage the technical department spilled on the server this time, and sometimes your service provider.
Several years ago the upstairs department found a way to save the lost energy from the faulty lines, which are irreplaceable due to their labyrinth-like formation under Neopia, wasting much time and energy if done so. They decided to divert the power by placing newer lines at breach points and letting the energy arc over short gaps.
Raw Ether cannot be used to power homes and premises without being converted, so they used to souped-up energy to power a smaller ray for Petpets, which function mostly in a similar way. However, due to the low Ether level when released from the petpet ray as a result of travelling through newer lines, the effects are not permanent, and petpet coding snaps back to their original formats when taken away from other, indirect Ether sources, such as your pets and its friends.
We predict that the new lines will continue to erode over the years, and in an attempt to save the energy from -those- leaks, still newer lines will be installed and used to power P3 rays. Eventually the Neopian underground will be so congested with Ether lines and various other transports of power that the system eventually collapses and forces itself into another cooldown; in which technicians jump in and start rewiring a small area to temporarily remedy the situation for another few years.
Note: The above is a fictional, fabricated article on how the lab works. I do not in any way claim to know how the lab actually functions, and therefore cannot say if any of it is remotely true, no matter how much I want it to be. It is not meant to demean or undermine the efforts/workflow/system/coding/etc. of the techs/progs/devs/etc. of the Neopets upstairs department. There.

I unlimitedly collect Resewn Shoyru Plushies because not only are Shoyrus my favourite neopet, they are of immense sentimental value to me; All my previous accounts' pets had been Shoys. Hence as a tribute to them, I collect old, raggedy, patched-up Shoyru plushies instead of regular coloured ones because I felt they held more significance in showcasing my old, undying loyalty and affection for these Neopets- that I will cherish them no matter how they appear or what they've been through. Also yes; they are indeed very cheap. :)
I try to acknowledge anyone who sends me plushies. However, sometimes I am unreachable, or may be occupied. Do know that if your gift does not bounce, that I have accepted it, and that I thank you in advance for each one of your contributions!
Generally I go out on on a purchasing spree every 3-4 months and purchase all Resewn Shoyru Plushies under the price of 10np on the market. It feels grand when my hard work shows up on the SSW at the end of my endeavor. I also accept and appreciate any and all contributions to this total, no matter how big or small. :)
