Hello all! My name is Spade, Chase, whatever you call me. Originally this petpage was Zorr's, but since then I've created a personality for Zorr that doesn't fit this petpage anymore. Sooo it's more like "Spade's Adoptables" but whatever. Anyway, you must be thinking to yourself, what is this all about? Why should I read this? Well, this page is dedicated to adoptables, and you might find some useful information here. If you don't, well, you could always read this to burn some time. xD Okay, so say that you're bored and browsing the boards for something interesting. All of a sudden, you come across a topic that says, "LUPE ADOPTABLES!". Intrigued, you click on the topic. The message of the topic poster has a link that leads to one of his or her petpages. The petpage has a bunch of images of Neopets on it and some weird boxes that have a bunch of nonsense in them. I'm here to inform you about all of that. Adoptables are basically images of Neopets, Neopets items, or even random non-Neopets-related things like iPods or something. The person who made those images is allowing you to place those images on your petpages, userlookup, or petlookups. Why? Well... some people collect adoptables or they just think that some adoptables look cool or something. They can make your petpage/lookup or userlookup look pretty. :P Here's the basic format for an adoptable:
The Poogle is the image that will show up on your lookup, petpage, etc. The MSP part is just the name of the color of the pet and is there for your information. The textbox is the part underneath "MSP". Textboxes contain the HTML needed to recreate the image on your lookup, petpage, etc. Usually, the HTML of the adoptable contains a link back to the petpage you found the adoptable on and the image you want to "adopt". Mine also has my username on it, but most people leave that off or just include their pet's name. I'm just paranoid. xD Normally, the creator of the adoptables will have a nifty set of rules that are there to remind you what you can and can't do with the adoptables. On average, the rules will say, don't enter these in the beauty contest, don't claim these as your own, and don't edit these without my permission. You should definitely follow these rules. It is against Neopets' rules to steal someone else's art, and it could get you frozen if you break the rules. Even tracing or drawing a pet in a similar pose is considered art theft. How would you like it if someone else took credit for a brilliant idea of yours? Ahh, customs. Custom adoptables are Neopets that are customized to look like your own. Say for example you have a Shadow Krawk, but in your mind, its design has a red mane and some orange markings. Sometimes artists will add a red mane and those markings onto a Krawk adoptable for you, therefore making a custom of your pet. Here's an example: Normal Shadow Krawk
Custom Shadow Krawk
Also, please note that stealing someone else's pet design IS a freezable/warnable offense. :) Try to be creative when designing your pet. Good question! Adoptables are very fun to make, though they can be time consuming. Okay, so you don't need a fancy art program to make an adoptable. However, you do need a somewhat more complicated art program if you wish to make your adoptable transparent. Transparent adoptables have an "invisible" background. Sometimes people put different colored backgrounds on their lookup/petpages. So, having a transparent adoptable would mean that instead of just being a white rectangle with a pet inside, the pet looks like it's actually on the page. I'll get back to transparent adoptables in a bit. ;) A good program to use is Microsoft Paint (sometimes abbreviated as "MS Paint" or just "Paint") if you use Windows. I can't help you if you use a Mac. :( Sorry. Okay, so open up Paint and draw a Neopet. When you're done with your adoptable, you need an image host to upload the image so you people can see it and adopt it. Photobucket is probably the most-used image host. If you're having trouble with paint, here is are two little tutorials that might help:
Here's how to make the edges look nicer:
Now what? Now you need to hone your HTML skills. Don't worry, HTML is easy and fun! Once you have the image uploaded, your adoptable is ready to be adopted! w00t! So, take your petpage (I'll just use your pet's page for this example) and type (TEXTAREA) -- (/TEXTAREA) But instead of (), place those... greater than or less than signs. XD I forget what they're called! They're the same keys as the , or . Now, the -- in between the TEXTAREAs is where the HTML for your adoptable goes. In place of the --, you should have the following: However, instead of my name "Zorr", you should put your pet's name (the one who's petpage you're putting the adoptables on). Also, after the img src=, you should put the URL for your image. The border="0 part is there to erase that blue/purple border that appears around your image. Here is an adoptable without a border:
And here's one with a border:
See the difference? Also, don't forget to put an image of what the adoptable looks like! People don't want to adopt something they can't see. ;D ...ooookay. xD The above example for the border="0" is transparent. As I mentioned earlier, Paint is good for adoptables because it's easy to edit adoptables pixel by pixel, and it's easy to make them transparent. Here's a non-transparent adoptable:
See that white stuff? Yeah. That's the stuff you wanna get rid of. Alright, I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 to make my adoptables transparent. I'm sure there are many other art programs that can make your adoptable transparent, but I'll use PSP 8 for my example. I'm also sure Adobe Photoshop can also make transparent images. Okay, with Paint Shop Pro 8, open your image. Press shift, control, and v at the same time. A window called "Set Palette Transparency" should show up. Click the third option, which should be "Set the transparency value to palette entry". Click the rectangle on the right. Select the background color. Hit okay, and you're done!
A few tips: first, if your background color is white, DON'T make anything else on the image white! If the eyes are white, make them slightly off-white or make the background a different color. ALSO: make sure the file format you save the image as supports transparent images! .png and .gif are excellant file formats. However, sometimes .gif can distort the image colors. I also don't think that .png in Adobe Photoshop supports transparent images. ALSO ALSO: please don't ask me what program to buy or where you can buy art programs. xD Search online for art programs or check around your local computer stores. Oh, a third also. XD If you use an art program like adobe photoshop, the non-pixel brushes aren't good for adoptables. If you have non-pixel lineart, then make sure to put a white border around the Neopet (not the image itself). Make sure the border is pixelated, otherwise your image could look like this:
That is also what happens if something other than the background is white. D: Makeables are newer than adoptables. They're basically adoptables, but instead you edit them to look like your pet. They usually contain just the lineart of a species of a pet and the username/petname of the creator of the lineart. People don't like it when you erase the user/petname of the creator, so please don't. :x Sometimes makeables include a light grey shading to help you. Here are two examples: ![]()
I put "sample" on both images just so that people get the idea. I don't have any makeables as of yet. xD After you finish coloring someone else's makeable, you need to upload it to your own image host. When you're placing the makeable on a petpage/userlookup, it's a good idea to at least link back to the petpage you found it on, especially if there's no username or petname on the image itself. So, that's basically it. xD Have fun making adoptables! Oh, and don't forget to take a look at mine. ;3 |
