Story

I still remember when I was very tiny. Probably because of my parents. When I was a very young pup, maybe just a few weeks old, till the time I was around six months I spent every day with my parents. We had a small farm house in the country a few miles away from the city my dad had a job in. I was an only child so my parents were always very protective of me but they did take me outside to play in the tall grass of the country every chance they got. I still remember it there. The landscape was beautiful, almost as if I had dreamed it up. The sky was always a light blue that softened the sky and the clouds floating by seemed soft and fluffy as cotton. It truly was a blessed place with tall, green grasses that seemed to flow like a river and whistled a beautiful melody in the wind.

One day I was outside playing with my mom in the front yard, waiting for my dad to get home. We always did that when we knew he would get home at a different time than normal. But when he finally did show up instead of walking over and greeting us like he normally did he ran up yelling about something I couldn't understand. My parents were bi-lingual and they normally used the language I didn't know when they didn't want me to hear what they were saying.

As soon as my mom herd him yell she picked me up by the scruff of my neck and took me inside and down to the basement. On the way in the front door I could see large, black lupes running in the direction of my home. There were about twelve or so of them and they seemed angry. Vicious.

My dad ran down after my mom and they both hid me in the back corner of the basement behind the large laundry basket there. They both looked worried even though they tried to hide it and they told me,"Stay down here and don't move a muscle no matter what you hear, okay? Keep your eyes shut and when this is over we'll come and get you we promise. We love you." And with that they ran up the stairs leaving me alone in the cold basement.

I think I was down there for about two days, even though it felt like a lot longer. I was starving and if it weren't for the fact that the hose next to the laundry basket was leaking I might have died of dehydration. I did hear a lot of different sounds upstairs and they scared me. I think that that experience alone might be the reason I'm so nervous all the time and stutter. All I could here for the first couple of hours were sounds of things breaking and screams of agony. Lots and lots of screaming. I recognized my moms scream the most and it made me miserable... Knowing I couldn't do a thing about it. I was still so tiny. If my dad, my huge, powerful dad couldn't fight these lupes off how could I? The worst part was, thought, that I had no idea what was going on. It scared me to the point I just sat there and cried for a day. I'm pretty sure I cried all through the second day too but I was just a puppy. I couldn't help it.

So after about two days hiding down there I heard the basement door open and I heard somebody walking down the stairs. I would have been scared that it was one of the lupes but whoever it was didn't even make the stairs creak, which meant they must be pretty small and light. Not at all big and muscular. "Hello?" A soft, obviously female, voice called out,"Are you down here little one? Don't be scared they're gone now... Oh please tell me they didn't get you too..." I heard her walking around the dimly lit basement, constantly calling in the same sweet voice. I stayed right were I was, fallowing my parents orders until the laundry basket I was hiding behind was gently pushed out of the way.

Standing in front of me was a rather small, pink lupess. She had big, kind eyes and a soft expression that kept me from running from her. "Don't be scared. I promise I won't hurt you little one,"She said as she came over and lay down in front of me, putting her head on her paws so that she was eye-level with me. I was still to nervous to speak. She smiled at me and said,"My name's Rose. I'm a friend of your moms. Are you okay?" I nodded shakily and she picked me up asking,"What's your name?" I was a little calmer as I answered,"Z-Zeorle..." She smiled and said looking at the door that lead to the rest of the house,"It's nice to meet you Zeorle. Now close your eyes and don't open them, okay? Could you do that for me? Just keep your eyes shut tight till I tell you to open them again. It'll be kind of like a game. If you can do that then I'll get you some ice cream when we get to my house." I did as I was told and asked,"W-why are we going to y-your house? W-w-why don't we s-stay here?" I heard her let out a sigh as she said,"It would be better to leave right now." We were almost to the front door, at least I think we were, when she said,"You're going to stay with me for a while, okay? Your mommy asked me to take care of you." I stayed quiet after that. I realized that I probably didn't want to know what had happened. But she I heard the gravel crunch under her feet as she carried me away from the house I opened one eye to look back at my old home one more time. The big window in the front of the house was broken, and behind it the yellow wall of my parents room was splattered crimson.

I ended up staying with Rose. She was basically a second mom and she always treated me like I was her own pup. She was probably the only person I've ever met who knew that I wasn't a girl without being told so and she always made sure to tell everyone who came over to the small apartment we now shared that I was a boy before they actually came over... although I still got strange looks from people. It was great living there and even though I wasn't fond of the polluted air of the city it was a fun place to live.

The first day of school wasn't fun. Far from it actually. Rose wanted me to grow up to be successful and happy so she forced me into one of the local schools. When I got inside the classroom it was full of other pups the same age as me. Apparently it was a lupe only school that was rather hard to get into and the only reason I had gotten in was because Rose was friends with the teacher. The room was split into two sides, a girl side and a boy side. That's were my problems started. I instantly headed over to the boys side but the teacher stopped me and said,"Sweetheart, wouldn't you rather play with some of the other girls?" I could hear a few girls and even a couple of boys laughing and I knew instantly that Rose had forgotten to tell the teacher I was a boy. Regretting the fact that I looked like my birth moms twin, I said quietly,"I-I'm a boy teacher."

After the look of shock and embarrassment wore off the teachers face she same right between the two biggest lupes in the class. They looked more like they should be in the upper class than this one and they teased me until one of the other lupes went to tell the teacher. The rest of the first day of school and every day after that went pretty much the same way and I just got used to others making fun of my stuttering and my annoyingly feminine appearance. The teacher wasn't all that nice either. She always put me next to the biggest students in the class. When I asked her why she said,"Well I just thought that maybe you might not be mistaken for a girl so much." Which, according to the other students, is a nice way of saying,"Because you look like a girl and maybe if they beat you up enough you might gain enough muscle to look like a guy of get your fur dyed another color."

Other than school though everything was pretty good. Normal actually. I went to movies and spent almost all of my time at the ice cream shop that Rose worked in. I never did get over the constant nervousness but I didn't pay as much attention to it. The city I lived in wasn't a great place though. A lot of crime and sickness and stuff like that. That's why I normally never left the apartment or the ice cream shop bellow it. It just wasn't safe.

One day when I was around 16 or so Rose didn't come to wake me up like she normally did. Instead I woke up to the sound of coughing. That wasn't a good sign. Rose had told me that she had a bit of a problem breathing and that I should take her to the hospital if I heard her coughing or having problems breathing. I instantly ran her to the hospital and waited for the doctor. When he got there he wouldn't tell me what was wrong with Rose but from what I could hear of the doctors conversations with the nurse it wasn't good. She ended up in the hospital for nearly a month and I stayed there to take care of her. People would come to visit her every now and again but other than that it was quiet.

While I was fixing something on the little bed remote one day I felt a paw on mine. I looked up to see Rose smiling and awake. That shocked me because she mostly slept these days and when she was awake she didn't smile much. She coughed once and said,"You're so sweet Zeo. You stayed here in the hospital this entire time just to make sure I was okay." I smiled at her and replied happily,"I-it's okay. I like h-helping you. Y-your my mom." She smiled wider and coughed a few times before she said,"I know that I won't be here much longer and I apologize for that. I should have found a way to stay and take care of you longer. You're still to young to live by yourself and you deserve better. I just want you to know I always loved you as a son." My smile instantly flipped and I said,"N-no! You can't go. You're to young to go. I love you too much mom..." But I knew it was useless. She was already gone. The unsteady beeping of the monitors has stopped and it wasn't going to start again.

I think I stayed there for about a day crying. I couldn't help it. The only person I had left was gone and now I had nothing. The world didn't end but in my mind it might as well have. My whole world was gone... and there wasn't a thing I could do about it...

After her funeral I let the city. I just couldn't stay there. I didn't go back to the country either because it just hurt too much. I basically wandered around from place to place for about a year. I think... It was interesting and everything and I got stronger from walking so much but I was still a paranoid, miserable lupe. Nothing more. Well until I reached road 560.

I was walking down a road known as road 560. It was really just a huge sidewalk in a city that was practically deserted. The only reason I was there in the first place was because It was the quickest way to the town I was headed to. It was dark outside but the street lights were working and the moon was pretty full. I eventually started to hear footsteps and sure enough a small white lupess came from around the corner. I couldn't see her well because she wasn't in a well lit area but when she stepped into the light of one of the street lamps in nearly yelped. She looked like something out of a horror movie and my first instinct was to run. A few feet behind her was a very happy looking lupess who looked like she was hopping instead of walking.

The more sinister looking lupess walked right up to me, grinning and said no more than an inch from my face,"Well, well. I had no idea guys could look that feminine. Quite an anomaly if I say so myself. Might be a nice test subject." I shuttered at the evil tone in her voice and backed up a bit. The other lupess stopped bouncing around like a puppy and ran over. She had sparkling purple wings coming from her back that reminded me of a bee for some reason and was covered in rainbow markings. Her rather long bangs covered most of her face but I could still tell that she was smiling.

She pushed the other lupess out of the way and said,"Stop it sis. You're scaring him! That's not nice. And You're not using him as any test subject." She then turned to me, still smiling, and said,"Hey! My name's Tegaki! That's my sis Tegakii. I know it sounds like we have the same name but she has an extra letter in her name. What's your name?" I looked the the ground slightly and replied,"My n-name's Zeorle..." Her short tail wagged from side to side as she said,"Nice to meet you! Where do you live?" I could tell she was the kind of person who was perpetually hyper but also extremely kind. I simply said,"I d-d-don't have a h-home..." She gasped with a shocked expression and said,"That's not right! Everyone should have a home! Why don't you come stay with us. I mean we do have one other room mate but she's real nice and I don't think she'll mind having you stay. Can you come? Can you? Please?"

I instantly looked over to the lupess who was supposedly Tegaki's sister and she just grinned at me in that evil way. I looked back to Tegaki and she was giving me that teary-eyed look that makes everyone feel guilty and I gave in,"Okay. I'll c-come." She jumped up and yelled,"Yay!"

She literally dragged me into a nearby alley-way and I saw a big swirling black and grey thing. I gave Tegaki a questioning look and she said,"It's a portal that leads to our home!" I just let her drag me though the portal and we ended up in a beat-up looking room. It was obviously the living room of the building, which was pretty tall from the looks of it. There was a dark-furred lupess sleeping on the sofa and the television had nothing but static on it. Tegaki turned off the television while her creepy sister headed up the stairs to one of the higher floors. The hyper lupess looked in my direction and said happily,"This is our home! It's a bit, er, worn but it's still a nice place to live." I could already tell that I was going to get along with that lupess.

I've lived there with them a while now. Klonaa, the lupess who was asleep on the couch, is pretty nice. She normally just stays by herself or with Tegakii so I don't know her well but from what I know she's an okay person. Tegakii still scares me. She seems to think it's funny. One time she actually chased me around with a machete for three hours straight before Klonaa accidentally pushed her out a -blocked- To this day I have no idea who was stupid enough to give her one in the first place. Tegaki is another story. I actually like her a lot... She's probably my best friend.
