Introduction
The colourful glow of the rising sun reflected itself upon the skies above as you pulled yourself away from your bed early one morning, stretching your tired limbs as far as they would go. After planting your feet into a pair of warm, comfortable slippers, you make your way down to the kitchen for a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee to help you begin your day.
You had just opened one of your kitchen cabinets to fetch a clean cereal bowl, when you happen to glance outside. What on earth is that red, glowing streak? you as yourself, curious as to weather or you were simply hallucinating from having awoken at such an early hour, or if there really was something strange out there. Then, within moments...
CRASH!
Whatever that glowing streak was, it was now in your front yard. Puzzled, and also a bit concerned, you decided to go out and investigate the mysterious object that had emerged from the fiery glow.
You cautiously approach the object to examine it, and find that it is unlike any contraption you've ever seen before. It was about the same size and shape as a treasure chest, and was made from different pieces of some very strange metals. A tiny hatch covered the top of it, which you flipped open to find a small screen with a slightly smaller speaker to its right.
After a few moments of staring at the curious object, the tiny screen activated itself, revealing a strange-looking being. It had a long, amphibious, alien-like face, with wide, orange eyes and hardly a nose. The creature had long, red hair, with a pair of green goggles on top of its forehead. It gave you a nervous, yet fascinated look.
H-hello? you heard the creature stammer through the speaker of the contraption. The voice sounded somewhat feminine, although it was difficult to decipher, for it had a dreadfully rough and scratchy feel to it because of the machine, almost as if someone was standing beside her while crumpling tin foil in their hands. I-is this planet Earth?
You were so overwhelmed with astonishment and fear that no words could come from your mouth. Dumbly, you gave the creature a weary nod of your head.
The nervously fascinated look on the creature's face was instantly lost in one of pure joy. Really?!? I-I made it?!? she asked, in bewilderment. I made it! Oh man, wait until the professors at the science academy see this! All these years, they thought I was crazy for believing in you- they thought I was simply wasting all of those countless days and nights slaving over this machine, perfecting it, even including a translation device just so that I could possibly make contact with your planet, but I sure proved them wrong! I can't believe it; I actually did it! I'm going to be famous!
After having released most of her excitement, she glances at you, your face revealing that you're still not sure whether you're amazed or terrified. Her enormous grin suddenly became a frown.
Oh, I'm sorry, she says. I just got so excited, I almost forgot to consider how terrifying this must be for you, talking to an alien.
Who are you? you had finally built up enough courage to ask.

Blah
In case you were unaware, Europa isn't just some fictional land I came up with- it is, in fact, a very real place. Europa is the sixth and second largest moon of the planet Jupiter. It got its name from the wife of the Greek god Zeus. (Fun fact- with the exception of earth, all planets and stars and astronomical stuff are named after Greek or Roman gods/goddesses. Cool, eh?) It was first discovered in 1610 by the astronomers Simon Marius and Galileo Galilei. It is believed to have a crust composed of ice, with an oceanic layer beneath, a layer of rock beneath that, and a core (supposedly) made of iron. It orbits the planet Jupiter approximately every three and a half Earth days.
And now, here's the cool part about Europa, the part that makes us astronomy lovers such lunatics over this moon. (Ha, get it? "Lunatics"? Because "lune" is another word for "moon". Haha... ha... It's nerd humour. ._.) As you know, Europa is thought to have quite a bit of water on it (in fact, if I've got my facts right, it's supposedly the biggest ocean in the galaxy- about twice the size of earth's oceans), and also enough oxygen and organic material to maybe- just maybe- support alien life. Further scientific research is needed before this can be confirmed, of course, but of all the other planets and moons and star stuff in our galaxy, Europa is the most likely to hold extraterrestrial life. Scientists are even considering launching a super-cool space submarine to Europa one of these days to investigate and search for life. Pretty groovy, eh? :)
