Welcome to Axtar's art page! Enjoy your look around~

EDIT: Until this page is revampted, you can find my latest doodles HERE.

If you're reading this, hey there! You've just stumbled across Axtar's (that would be me) collection of rough doodles, sketches and the occasional colored piece or two.

Feel free to poke around - the navigation links are on the right. If you're interested in progress shots, a few of the initial sketches have been uploaded onto Snowgnat's page.

This latest random image is Yerenwens's BC entry for the Masquerade-themed round! If you think he looks good, please consider sparing him your Bruce vote? :D

Shall We Dance?

Completed: 30th July 2011
Tools:, Mechanical pencil 0.5, Wacom Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Around 3 hours

It's been some time since I've done a proper art piece! I found out about the Masquerade theme this BC round and just couldn't resist. So here's Yerenwen, all decked out and ready to schmooze with the fanciest of them. :D

Did the preliminary sketch while I was at work, and inked/colored when I got back home. If you think Yerenwen's looking good, please consider sparing him your vote? We'd both be super-grateful. :*

The original pencil sketch for this can be found on Snowgnats' page

Not According to Plan

Completed: 21st January 2011
Tools:Wacom Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Around one hour

Done for a RC round, but didn't place. No matter though - I really like how this turned out. :p This was a little of a rushed piece since the deadline was the next day, but I really like how the colors work and the lines look. I should aim to try this kind of layer-shading again.

And awww, Fluffy. It's okay; you'll wake him next time...not. (Seriously, Fluffy =/= Turmy fodder.)

Anyone up for Cookies? (BC Entry)

Completed: 16th September 2010
Tools:Wacom Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Around one and a half hours

Yerenwen on one of his infamous 'baking days'. The others know well enough to be conveniently away during these days, in fear of being asked to test his various baked goods.

Still getting used to my tablet, but this was crazy fun to draw because, well, it's Yerenwen. ♥ One of the few times I've drawn him as an actual Neopet; I think it turned out pretty okay. I really want him to have a trophy, so if you think he's cute/don't want to sample one of those cookies, spare him a vote please? :D

PS:You can find the initial sketch for this here.'

edit: Despite my main getting CGed and frozen halfway during BC week, Yerenwen still managed to cinched Gold in his category. Thank you, everyone who helped support him! :*

more edits: Yerenwen also managed to cinch the 929th Pet Spotlight! And on Bruce Day to boot - best day to be featured ever. *fistpumps*

Quiet

Completed: 31st August 2010
Tools:Wacom Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 1 hour
(drag + drop on address bar for full-size)

Yerenwen, day-dreaming about his days on the slope...or the newest cookie recipe to try out. :p

This was mostly an attempt at purely-digital art and learning to familiarize myself with solid, one-tone shading AND my new Wacom tablet. :D The pose was heavily referenced from a picture of Super Junior's Kyuhyun, so definitely not claiming any credit there. I'm glad that this try turned out fairly decent though!

Snowboarding - Terror Mountain Open Championships, Y7

Completed: 26th August 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 3 hours

Yerenwen, pre-Chocolate-Bruce days. A little bit of art for his back-story when he was a Christmas Bruce and still a snowboarding prodigy.

Possibly my first piece with some sort of background! (No, header images don't count.) The sun flare was incredibly fun to do. The trailing snow was tricky though, as was the anatomy.

Here's to me hopefully putting his backstory up soonish. Check his lookup then. ;)

Enjoying Coffee

Completed: 22nd July 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 2 hours

Figured it was time Yerenwen got a full picture to himself and I wanted a picture to put on my UL. Didn't have access to a scanner though, so the lineart for this was photo-snapped and cleaned in PS.

My favorite shading bit's got to be the pants here. The perspective isn't all too bad either.

Yerenwen (gijinka) Header

Completed: 19th April 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Lost track, but long enough
(Full header with typography is on Yerenwen's lookup)

Sketched and colored this in for Yerenwen's lookup - wow, I've certainly come a long way since the gijinka I did of Christmas Yerenwen way back (lower on this page)!

I absolutely love the coloring style I've used for this - hoping to hang on to it for a long, long while! Proudest of the shading - I went through various pictures of Japanese fanart to get a grasp on how to color shadows on skin properly. The hair took the longest, mostly since I only used the hard brush and eraser.

Progress shots of the earlier stages of coloring this in can be found on Snowgnats' page.

And with a little persuasion...

Completed: 14th April 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Roughly one hour

Due to Krin giving me the heads-up, I submitted this as a last-minute entry for the Random Contest's Round 188 (Taxes.. NOOOOOO!!!). By some stroke of luck, I managed to place 2nd.

Did this at 1 a.m Wednesday night - the rush meant I didn't have time to clean up the sketch properly before throwing some colors on it. I'm really happy with how this turned out though! I like the loose-sketch feel I kind of achieved on this one, especially on the Tax Beast. Hmmm, maybe I should rush sketches more?...

gijinka experiment

I've drawn gijinkas (rendition of an animal/object in human form) once or twice before. As it was, I thought it'd be fun to try drawing my bruce, Yerenwen as a gijinka, hence this. Due to a lack of functional 0.1 black pens, I didn't ink this sketch in either, but I did neaten the line art before scanning it in. There are some proportion problems (my everlasting woe) here and there, but on an overall, I rather like how he turned out. ^^

I'm thinking of trying out a different style of CGing (digital coloring) on him, one with perhaps a touch of realism. With any luck, I'll actually finish coloring him...eventually.

initial sketch

progress: 57% completed

Mousing is tough. :/ So's coloring clothes.

Do not mind the stick figures; they're just there for the entertainment.

(To see previous progress screenshots, drag image to the address bar and edit 'progress4' to either 'progress3', 'progress2' or 'progress')

rough sketch

Completed: 5th February 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5
Time taken: 15 minutes or so

Super-quick sketch done from memory, done in 5-10 minutes. I couldn't really remember how Bruces look like though, and beaks are always tricky. ^^;; Not inked.

Lookup header and BC entry (11th Dec 09)

Completed: 7th December 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, ballpoint pen (black), Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Roughly 3 hours

Decided I should make Snowgnats a proper lookup of his own, especially since he's pretty much a Fire Kiko for life now. ;) Loved doing the fire part. I kind of fail at metal shading though.

The complete picture can now be seen on Snowgnats' lookup. (The slime splat on the lookup is larger to accomodate for the font and Snowgnats' name.)

EDIT: Snowgnats entered the BC on the 11th of December 2009 and placed first in his category and 10th overall with 420 votes! ^^ Thank you, everyone who voted!

Quick doodle - Snowgnats (human)

Completed: 15th December 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5,Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Ten to fifteen minutes

Quick random doodle of Snowgnats if he were human. Scanner still down, hence the gray smudge-like textures (results of shadows caught in photo).

I'd like to think that Snowgnats would be a pretty boy. :p Forgot to add in the gloves and his polarchuck hat looks a little deranged, but I'm still pretty satisfied with this. Note to self - improve drawing heads wearing hats.

Jorgey Head-shot

Completed: 24th August 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 1 hour

It's about time Jorgey got her own gijinka image! Originally quick-sketched this to be made into a button of some sort (hence the size), but it turned out so well, I added more details and decided to complete it after all.

Does it even need to be said that I love her hair?

Lookup header and BC entry (23rd Jan 09)

Completed: 16th January 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Black pen 0.1, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 4 and a half hours

The rough sketch was done during break between classes. As it was my first time trying out for the BC, I wasn't sure when the submission date was and ended up rushing, hence why the lines are rather rough-looking. (Lesson learnt: read up on the submission date before rushing senselessly!)

CGing (Coloring) this in was fun though! Photoshop Elements is a fairly new program for me, so it took me awhile to figure out how to create the basic lineart outline. The fins were easier to color than I thought they might be, although I didn't quite get the transparent feel I was going for. What I probably found hardest was trying to create the bubble-texture feel for Jorgey Hop.

initial sketch

EDIT: A huge 'thank you' to everyone who voted for Jorgey! (^o^) She placed first in the Gelert category and 6th overall with a completely unexpected number of 586 votes!

I was really surprised by the results; seriously, I really appreciate everyone who took the time to look at Jorgey and vote for her. Thanks once again!

quick sketch

Completed: 5th February 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Black pen 0.1, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 30 minutes or so

Pretty much what the title says: a ten-minute doodle in uni. I should have been more careful with the inking though; I took ages clearing up uneven lines in Photoshop.

Some of them still aren't cleaned properly, but I reckon I'll get to that if I decide to color it in.

Freedoms Colt (gijinka)

Completed: 31st August 2010
Tools:Photoshop Elements
Time taken: About one hour

Fully-digital art, with no refs! ^^ Wanted to give Freedom more of a 'boy' feel, rather than a baby one. Works better with his character.

Freedoms Colt (gijinka)

Completed: 24th January 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: About one and a half hours

A very quick, rough doodle in uni from memory. To try and create a soft kind of feel, I used very light, simple colors and brushes. I am very fond of the 'horn'. :p

In the Dark

Completed: 18th November 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5,Photoshop Elements, Bamboo tablet
Time taken: one and a half hours

This started of as a quick sketch + pencil shading at work. I later took it home, scanned it in and retraced it using my tablet.

Tried out some experimental shading techniques on this one: I'm pretty pleased with how the hand and the lips turned out. Got a bit lazy by the time I reached the hair though, haha!

This was pretty fun to practice - hoping to improve my shading more.

Kaijirou (gijinka) Header

Completed: 22nd April 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5,Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Four hours or so
(Full header, with typography, is on Kaijirou's lookup)

Gijinka art piece for Kaijirou's lookup. I thought the boa would be a killer, but surprisingly, the hair gave me more trouble with the highlights!

I love how the face turned out though, especially the areas around the nose and the mouth. Muscle contours are tough - probably need more practice on that. Overall, this is another piece I'm really proud of.

Quick doodle - Kaijirou (human)

Completed: 16th December 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5,Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Twenty five minutes

Quick random doodle of Kaijirou (my Magma Peophin) if he were human. Still fiddling around with his design, so this may change yet.

SO MANY ANATOMICAL PROBLEMS IT ISN'T FUNNY. Legs especially are too small and awkward - I'll probably edit the bottom half of this sketch another time. (It looked bigger on paper. x.x) I rather like the pointing finger though and his face. :3

Ridy character sketch

Completed: 15th April 2011
Tools:Wacom Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 3-4 hours-ish?

Figured it was time Ridy got a proper full-body design. It's going to be tricky remembering the red-wire patterns in the future!

Overall, this came out better than I expected. Still wasn't able to properly achieve a metal-gleam for certain parts, but eh, I finished it, so I'm not complaining. C:

Ridy character sketch

Completed: 9th September 2010
Tools:Wacom Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Two hours and forty-five minutes
(drag into address bar for full-view)

Slowly getting used to the tablet! This is a rough full-body design I did for Ridy - might still modify it a little.

The details were fun but a little mind-boggling - goes to show that I really don't know much about these kind of ninja-armour bodysuits, haha! Doing the fine lines also took awhile, especially since my lines on my tablet are still pretty wobbly. Hoping to color this in eventually and use it as his lookup image.

PS: You can find the initial sketch for this here.

Ridy character sketch

Completed: 31st August 2010
Tools:,Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately one hour

Another fully-digital piece, woot! Again, this was done mostly for tablet practice. Based on a picture of Super Junior's Sungmin, but this one's not as heavily-reffed as the one I used for Yerenwen. I really rather like this. :*

Daily Dare 2011: Dirigibles Support Banner

(drag + drop into address bar for full size)
Completed: 3rd March 2011
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, Photoshop Elements, Mechanical pencil 0.5
Time taken:Approximately 4 hours

Link:

Switch the height and width values if you want the banner-size to be:
- small (preview size above): height=325 width=450
- medium (check my UL): height=433 width=600

A smaller, alternative version can also be found HERE.

A new banner for a new Daily Dare year! That's about the only thing that's changed though - I'm still firmly Team Dirigibles this year. :D

Did the sketch outline at work, then retraced it into Photoshop. Tried experimenting a little with lineless art; aside from the wonky-ish legs, it doesn't look too bad. (Sorry, Dirigibles! Go pwn the staff tournament. :D)

Just copy the code in the link box if you want to use this banner as well. The background is transparent (picture format: PNG) so you don't have to worry about a sudden white-box background. And it's not necessary, but I'd appreciate a heads-up if you use this, thanks!

Daily Dare 2011: Snarkie Support Banner

(drag + drop into address bar for full size)
Completed: 5th March 2011
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, Photoshop Elements, Mechanical pencil 0.5
Time taken:Approximately 4 hours

Link:

Switch the height and width values if you want the banner-size to be:
- small (preview size above): height=325 width=450
- medium (check my UL): height=433 width=600

A smaller, alternative version can also be found HERE.

As per tradition (somewhat), here's a bonus Team Snarkie banner for Daily Dare 2011. This one's especially for friends whom I know support Snarkie. Besides, Snarkie's pretty cool too. ;D

As with the Dirigibles one, the sketch outline was done at work, then retraced it into Photoshop.

Just copy the code in the link box if you want to use this banner. The background is transparent (picture format: PNG) so you don't have to worry about a sudden white-box background. And it's not necessary, but I'd appreciate a heads-up if you use this, thanks!

Grooming is Important

Completed: 3rd February 2011
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Approximately one and a half hours

My submission for the Zafara Day Gallery, and it made it in! Woot! Zafaras are really fun to draw and I thought I'd submit something for Jimmy, my own Zaffy.

Huh, I just realized almost all of my Art Gallery entries have varying shades of yellow backgrounds. Huh.

In the Mood for Peanuts

Completed: 15th January 2011
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Approximately two hours

This made it into the Elephante Day art gallery. :D A little unexpected, because my Elephante looked (still looks) a bit wonky, especially around the trunk, and the piece was a bit rushed (most of the time was spent trying to work out the trunk, whoops). So, thanks, TNT! :D

Delicious!

Completed: 20th December 2010
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Approximately two hours

SSketched and submitted this for the Borovan Day art gallery, but alas, it didn't make it. That aside, I really llike the concept for this though. Scorchios are harder to ddraw than they seem.

And yeah, I really need to work on my background skills. xD

Sprinkles are Important!

Completed: 11th December 2010
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Approximately one and a half hours

With Yerenwen taking center stage in the Pet Spotlight (check Yerenwen's section for more on that), I thought it would be amazing to have Fluffy featured as well. So I did this quick sketch-and-color and typed out a few paragraphs for submission to the Petpet Spotlight. Personally, my favorite bit is the 'Sprinkles' jar - the glassy sheen was fun to attempt.

Honestly, I didn't think Fluffy would make it in, what with Yerenwen already having been featured so recently. But the very next day, I received a lovely NM saying that Fluffy had indeed made it into 438th Pet Spotlight. So that's Yerenwen and Fluffy being featured in the very same week! How awesome is that? :D

At the Drop of a Hat

Completed: 3rd December 2010
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:One and a half hours

Rushed this piece out for Bruce Day because, well, it is Bruce Day. BRUCE DAYYYY. Did the preliminary sketch during breaks at work and scanned/colored it in at home. The effects turned out a little messy due to the rush, but the tuxedo-ed Bruce turned out pretty decently. And falling Bruces with umbrellas will be forever win.

This managed to make it into the Bruce Day Art Gallery, whoo! Thanks, TNT. ;D

Brown Poogles are Sweet Too!

Completed: 30th August 2010
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Three to four hours
(drag + drop into address bar for full size)

First ever art piece attempted with my new Wacom tablet! I did a quick preliminary sketch for this in pencil, snapped a photo of it, then traced the lineart with said new tablet. Gosh, digital lineart is hard! Still used the mouse to color though. xD

Submitted to the Art Gallery for Poogle Day 2010 - no idea if it'll make it in, especially with the other 1337 artists out there, but fingers crossed, it's always worth a try. ;)

update: This did make it into the Art Gallery for Poogle Day, yay! :D It even made the News page, whoo! Netted me a Mystery Island Paint Brush.

It's Okay - We All Make Mistakes

Completed: 1st July 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:50 minutes
(drag + drop into address bar for full size)

Yet another entry for the Random Contest (round 194 - Yooyuball Crazy). Honestly, how could I resist? It's the Altador Cup AND Dirigibles in the same frame.

This theme came out in the middle of the AC season - rushed out this entry during the second (and last) break day and submitted it. Wasn't expecting to place first though, so yay for that!

The idea behind this pic was inspired from a lot of in-board jokes on SoLiD during the Kiko Lake matches - the kiko sprites really DO kind of look like yooyuballs, don't they? We also needed something to blame for Dirigibles' loss besides Twitterpate. Hence this. :3

I support Lost Desert', Vonde - Altador Cup V

Completed: 13th Jun 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Kilometrico Papermate pen S-Fine, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Three+ hours

Code:
Just for ACV, have a Lost Desert support banner-thing featuring Vonde! LD because it's my current (and forever) team, Vonde because he's the team's top scorer and is just, on an overall, awesome.

The background is transparent (picture format: PNG) so you don't have to worry about a sudden white-box background.

Dirigibles - Racing to the Top

Completed: 10th March 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Black pen 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:2 and a half hours
(drag + drop into address bar for full size)

Submitted this as a Random Contest entry (round 185 - blahblah) and managed to place first, woot!

Prior to this becoming an RC entry, I had intended to sketch this out as another DD-Dirigibles doodle. Osprey very kindly gave me a heads up as to what the current RC theme was (thanks, Osprey!) and well, I couldn't help myself.

The rough sketch and inking were finished super-fast. The digital editing and coloring...were not. xD I'm really happy with how this turned out though, wonky proportions and all - team Dirigibles for the win!

I support Dirigibles banner - Daily Dare 2010

Completed: 18th February 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Three+ hours

Code:
With the current Daily Dare and DD Staff Tournament going on, here's a banner of support (complete with coding) for Dirigibles, our favorite staff candidate in the DDST over at SoLiD (Lost Desert spirit FTW!)

The background is transparent (picture format: PNG) so you don't have to worry about a sudden white-box background.

I support Snarkie banner - Daily Dare 2010

Completed: 2nd March 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Three+ hours

Code:
Also in line with the the current Daily Dare event, I did a quick banner for Snarkie, my second pick in the Staff Tournament. Because anyone who likes ninjas is cool. (PS: Sponge, this is also for you.)

Like the Dirigibles banner, this banner's background is transparent and shouldn't mess up lookups/pages with colored backgrounds. The Japanese hiragana reads as 'dattebayo!', Snarkie's 2nd staff quote on the profile page.

Altador Cup IV - Lost Desert

Completed: 23rd June 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: About thirty minutes

More random doodles courtesy of my uni classes! This is my 'if-he-were-human' take on Vonde Cayle, Lost Desert's left forward in the Altador Cup IV. Drew him mostly from memory; considering I use him to score so often, you'd think it'd look better. ^^;; Forgot to add in the headpiece he wore initially, but decided to leave it off in the end. :p

EDIT: Now with additional head-shots of the entire LD team! Can you guess who's who?
PS: Lamelle's a female here because well, I thought she was a female. :p

And now with color! Super-rough coloring job in Photoshop Elements in between checking the Neoboards, writing and attempting board pwning. :p .

Vonde Cayle and Tandrak Shaye (DC) (Altador Cup IV)

Completed: 7th July 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: About forty-five minutes

Uni classes are inspirational doodling grounds. Anyway, this is in honor of Vonde Cayle and Tandrak Shaye and the lovely conspiracy born within the SoLiD boards during ACIV. More 'if-they-were-humans' editions because my memory just fails that way.

Mirsha Grelinek (SK) and Layton Vickles (DC) (Altador Cup IV)

Completed: 8th July 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: About twenty minutes

This one comes courtesy of Japanese class (hence why this may be rougher/messier than the previous ones). X3 Done for Kkaze, who really likes both these characters. ^^ Also, I should do a lot more referencing when it comes to uniforms.

Also, I should just label this entire page as 'if they were human' so I won't have to mention it each time. XD

Dasher Soley with a Nice Hat (KI)

Completed: 13th July 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Around an hour (in between class breaks)

For Julie of KI in honour of her birthday. Was experimenting with a new coloring style; hope you like it. Sorry if it's rather messy...^^;;

And yes, that is Dasher. With a Nice Hat. :p

Derlyn Fonnet: Thank You (KD)

Completed: 13th July 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Around thirty minutes (in between class breaks)

For the members of KSG/KFC because they're awesome. ^^ And also because I've always wanted to try doodling Darlyn, whose hair took longer than the rest of the sketch. ^^; And I have the feeling it's still a little messed up despite all that time taken...

And as a bonus:

Because Timmy loves his closet. :p

The Hardships of...Habitarium P3s Pt 4

Completed: 1st December 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5
Time taken: Approximately 15 minutes

The last of a set of four comics that I submitted to the Neopian Times. This managed to squeeze into the 475th issue.

Not all pests are mean, really.

The Hardships of...Habitarium P3s Pt 3

Completed: 1st December 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5
Time taken: Approximately 15 minutes

The third of a set of four comics that I submitted to the Neopian Times. This managed to squeeze into the 474th issue.

I don't know about you guys, but my Pinchits keep getting hidden under the other P3s in the habitarium. A little small perhaps?

The Hardships of...Habitarium P3s Pt 2

Completed: 1st December 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5
Time taken: Approximately 15 minutes

The second of a set of four comics that I submitted to the Neopian Times. This managed to squeeze into the 473rd issue.

Poor Mootixes - there's a downside to being cute, I suppose. Can't help but want to watch them work.

The Hardships of...Habitarium P3s Pt 1

Completed: 1st December 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5
Time taken: Approximately 15 minutes

The first of a set of four comics that I submitted to the Neopian Times. This managed to squeeze into the 472nd issue.

Also, my Larnikins need to hatch more soldiers. Seriously.

His Default Expresshun

Completed: 22nd July 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 2 hours

(click + drag to the address bar to view this in full-size)

A submission of mine to the Neopian Times; it made it into the Mutant Edition. It's fairly simple - just a little play on an in-joke over at SoLiD about how Leera Heggle's face is stoic despite everything.

(PS: Title is deliberately misspelt because the filters go haywire when I spell it right. ^^;

BGC Lend, Anyone?

Completed: 14th January 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, ballpoint pen (black, 0.5), ink pen (black, 0.7), Unipin 0.1, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3 and a half hours

(click + drag to the address bar to view this in full-size)

This was my Random Contest entry for the theme 'Comical Moments', where it won second place. A friend gave me a heads-up that the round's theme was art-based and encouraged me to give it a go. (Thanks, Krin! I owe you one. ♥)

Deciding what I wanted to base the comic on was easy. Executing the idea was ...not. Life decided to throw a number of major deadlines my way during the RC period, resulting in this entry being rushed out on the 14th, one day before the closing date. It's messier than I had intended it to be (mostly due to my messy handwriting), but I do like the color scheme and style I decided to go with.

Hopefully I did my lender justice with this!

(A) NOTE (OF SOME KIND): For art in this section, please drag+drop the pieces in the address bar to view them in full size.

Christian Tellez for Chris

Completed: 8th January 2011
Tools:Bamboo Tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Approximately three hours

For Chris, because he is awesome-epic. :D

My favorite part of this is the guitar, hands down. And maybe the right wrist - it's nice to get anatomy right once in a while! I generally don't like working with black, but having done this, maybe I should try experimenting with it once in awhile.

And I still think the background resembles cave art a little, ehehehe. Rock on!

Aealiso for Ant

Completed: 7th December 2010
Tools:Bamboo Tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:Approximately three hours

Because Ant is made of absolute awesome and art is the only way I can thank him even semi-decently. ♥

I really, really loved how this turned out though, especially skin-wise. The window was a last-minute addition to make the background look a little less plain. Proportions are a little off, but eh, still very pleased with this. And Ant is still awesome, kthx.

xCiiindy for Lieva

Completed: 15th August 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 1 hour

XCiiindy, Lieva's (hist0riegirl) little Aisha - Baby pets are always adorable. I thought I'd try keeping one of her eyes open just because. :3

Raienana for Chris

Completed: 14th August 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3 hours

Raienana, Chris's (chris123094) grey-magician Eyrie. Chris also gave me free reign over the gijinka; I tried to design the hairstyle in a way that it flicks out a little likt eh Eyrie's fur. Added the cards for a little more emphasis on the 'magician' concept.

I generally don't like working with dark colors much, and grey/black's a little of a killer. Raienana turned out really good though, despite that. She's also been good practice on shading lips. Cheers, Chris - glad you liked her!

Tudju for Denise

Completed: 12th August 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3-4 hours

Ah, Tudju. That cute little Paul-McCartney Twinkie with impeccably good manners. ♥ Congrats on the new pet, Denise (mayonise)!

Tudju was incredibly fun and surprisingly easy to draw. He's also my first attempt at torso shading - I'm glad it turned out pretty decent. ^^ Actually, I'm pretty happy with this whole piece in general.

Araneth for esh

Completed: 4th August 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3 hours

First and foremost, it must be established that esh (_eshh_) is an epic person. And it is due to that epic-ness that I found myself doing this piece. Are we clear? Good.

I was allowed the liberty to design how Araneth's (Araneth_) gijinka form would look like, so I stuck to her customization. Shading the red dress was a little tricky, but good practice. Favorite part? Probably the lips.

I'm really glad you liked this, esh - goodness knows I can't give you anything else but a lot of flailing. xD

Lunariah for Bethy

Completed: 19th July 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 1 hour

Bethy's (breppertx3) very own baby Bori, Lunariah (Lunariah_). Isn't she cute? :D Matches her owner real well.

Used less-blended shading strokes in an attempted Painter-like feel. I really like her tiny baby face though.

Hadevir II for Vilma

Completed: 5th July 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3 hours

Hadevir II (Hadevir_II) for Vilma (everybody__lies). I've owed Vilma this for ages and ages - sorry for being such a good procrastinator! T_T And thank you for being a wonderfulamazing person.

I made this image with the intention of turning it into a lookup header - you can see the full version on Hadevir's lookup. The color and shading's a bit dark - my attempt at creating a kind of compelling feel. The ear's fixed in the header image.

Enloch for Hazard

Completed: 23rd May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 2-3 hours

A Tarla-Art-Board trade with Hazard (kiko819819). Enloch is a really well-developed character with a great concept and was really, really fun to sketch. Tried a little perspective practice on him - he was really obliging.

My favorite part has to be the wings though - was going for a sort of ghostly feel to them.

Besck for Aaron

Completed: 22nd May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 2-3 hours

A Tarla-Art-Board trade with Aaron (aki_aki355). Besck has such a cute little-school-boy style to him, so I experimented with a harder, less-blended shading style to get a cartoon-ish feel. The effect turned out really nicely, IMO.

Dr. McKay for Rodney

Completed: 21st May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 2 hours

Yep, another piece of Dr. Mckay for Rodney! Technically still a Tarla-Art-Board piece, but inspiration for this one struck me during Japanese class and I couldn't help but sketch it out.

So what exactly makes a cranky genius smile? ;)

Inverness for Cristy

Completed: 18th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3 hours

A Tarla-Art-Board trade with Cristy (mitsymew1). Used a dark color scheme to depict Inverness's (Inverness_) necromancy. I liked how I did the face, but ehhh, the smoke around her could have been done better. ;-;

Shiebha for Mallory

Completed: 17th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3 hours

A Tarla-Art-Board trade with Mallory (fardreamer). Shiebha's description and customization totally struck the Dynasty-Warriors fangirl in me, so I tried to depict her in a pose not unfamiliar to the game. Fun stuff. :3

Dr. McKay for Rodney

Completed: 17th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 30 to 40 minutes

A Tarla-Art-Board gift to Rodney (rodney_mckay) or Dr. McKay (Doctor_McKay). I love, love, love Rodney's art and his design of his characters, and Dr. McKay's design really stuck with me.

Hench this quick sketch-and-color. Really, really couldn't help myself (hello, curt workaholic?)

KitsuneDevil for Pam

Completed: 15th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately three hours

A Tarla-Art-Board gift to Pam (pamishgreat). She wanted a take on her (then red) Shoyru, so I tried some gijinka-anthro art and went a bit wild, especially with the strings.

The legs are kind of off, but I really like the wings and Kitsune's face. Thanks for the awesome chats we had, Pam!

Izzleia for Chelsea

Completed: 15th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 10 minutes

A Tarla-Art-Board gift. This was a super-quick sketch for Izzleia, Chelsea's (neoooooooo) Mutant Gnorbu. I'm glad to see she's so loved. ^^

Surlanth for Lindz

Completed: 14th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately two and a half hours

A Tarla-Art-Board gift for Lindz (sarin420). Clearly still needing work on animal anatomy. I really like the hard-brush shading on Surlanth though.

PiccoloD for Kim

Completed: 13th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 15 minutes

A Tarla-Art-Board gift. I really like PiccoloD's name - a fitting name for a Darigan Chomby, IMO. Quick-sketched this when I was in a bit of a hurry, but I'm pleased that it turned out pretty neat. Kim (nega) herself does pretty cool art.

Aragorn Elfstone for Arwen

Completed: 13th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3-4 hours

A Tarla-Art-Board gift of Aragorn (the_Aragorn_Elfstone) for Arwen (arwen_undomiel1). Trying to get a jelly-like opacity (which I think I failed at) was tough, but trying to achieve that while maintaining a blatant light-flare effect?

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out though, especially around the face and legs. Aragorn is a good-looking boy and clearly much loved so cheers, Arwen!

Blouge for Soda

Completed: 12th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately two hours

A Tarla-Art-Board gift for Soda (7up_soda). Experimented a little with body-fading-into-background stuff and one-tone non-blend shading for the biscuit effect.

Jury6 for Dragi

Completed: 11th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately twenty minutes

A Tarla-Art-Board gift for Dragi55. Her Yurble, Jury6, has a classy, top-hat-outfit style which I tried to capture. I used the same coloring method as I did for Niqalo. (see below)

Niqalo for Sara

Completed: 11th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately half an hour

A Tarla-Art-Board trade. A quick sketch for Niqalo for Sara (rookfeather). I played around a little with this - the lineart was photo-snapped and cleaned only around the edges, leaving some texture on it. Overlaid it with a few layers of color and BOOM! this.

I really liked the effect though. Will possibly use it again in the future.

Theluji for Rain

Completed: 11th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately 3-4 and a half hours

A Tarla-Art-Board gift. Theluji, oh Theluji, how much do I love thee? Rain (ilovetherain) is an amazing artist and his design is gorgeous - until today, Theluji's ref makes me squee. This is possibly one of my favorite pieces ever, from both the base layer to the gif itself.

Rain wanted him dressed like Master Gracey from 'The Haunted Mansion' ride. With that and Theluji's customization in mind, I constructed the gif (in Fireworks) from two different layers - one with and without the skull mask - emulate how Gracey morphs from human to skeleton. I'm really happy with how well this turned out.

Kaedyr for Wolfy

Completed: 9th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately two hours

A Tarla-Art-Board gift. This gorgeous Faerie Kougra belongs to Wolfy (aewolf165). My art really does little justice to his design - go check him out for yourself. Possibly my first ever attempt at a Kougra - I really need to improve my animal anatomy, serious.

Umbacano for Tea

Completed: 9th May 2010
Tools:Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately two to three hours

A Tarla-Art-Board gift. This was Tea's (teascientist) gorgeous, gorgeous Aisha, Umbacano - her design was really detailed and fun (if a little challenging) to tackle! I especially loved working on her hair and eyes. Glad Tea liked this - she's an amazing artist in her own right.

Alex for Meg

Completed: 8th May 2010
Tools:Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Approximately one and a half hours

A Tarla-Art-Board trade. This was Meg's original character, Alex, who was, I believe, a cat. First attempt at drawing lineart directly into PS Elements - it was pretty fun but tough. Clearly, a lot more practice is needed. xD

Ant's Polarchuck Den' for Ant

Completed: 20th April 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 2 and a half hours

A while back, I promised Ant (aaraque) to do a small banner-thing for his gallery of polarchucks. So here it is!

Initially, I planned to have an igloo and various polarchucks around it, but since this was sketched in school, I couldn't quite remember how polarchucks looked like. (Had to rely on the memory of drawing Snowgnats' hat to do the polarchuck headwear). Still, I liked the concept of a polarchuck hat and a polarchuck.

In line with my most recent coloring style, I went for a slightly paint-like soft feel, hoping to get the feel of children's books illustrations. So here's a salute to you and your polarchucks, Ant!

Desert Pride for Mary

Completed: 17th April 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 3-4 hours

First Peo attempt ever, this is Mary's (moms_rock) Desert Pride. I found the anatomy really tricky and the cloth-cloak the Desert Peos wore didn't help ease that much! Coloring-wise, the wings really did me in for a bit, whoo.

I'm proud of the coloring though, especially the sheen on the gold pieces and the body shading. I did a little experimentation and hard-brushed all all the contours and shading in instead of using the air-brush tool (a usual staple in my coloring technique). Mary, thank you so, so much for everything - hope this does justice to Pride!

Burbrush for Mankey

Completed: 26th February 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5, Photoshop Elements
Time taken:3+ hours

Done for the ever-awesome Mankey (mankey5) - her draik, Burbrush. This was my 2nd art attempt at sketching a draik (the top half anyway) and I have to admit they're rather fun to sketch!

CGing (Coloring) the wings in, especially the folds, was pretty challenging but I'm pretty satisfied with them, the left wing in particular. I'm also pleased with how the shading on the face and arm came out. Hope you like this, Mankey!

Span for Vickie

Completed: 23rd May 2011
Tools: Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Around 30 minutes

A quick take on Vickie's awesome Mutant Scorch, Span. c: Bonus gijinka included!

Quick-Sketch: Layton Vickles (gijinka)

Completed: 11th April 2011
Tools: Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Around 20 minutes each

I figured Layton deserved some art on his lookup, nevermind that he isn't a Hissi yet. :p Besides, I have a thing for Layton Vickles. ;D

Quick-Sketch: Minx and Kelanved

Completed: 19th November 2010
Tools: Bamboo tablet, Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Around 15 minutes each

Had itchy fingers, so I did two quick doodles of Minx (a Choco Cy) and Kelanved (Magma Hissi) for a couple of friends.

Suppers: Harajuku Schoolgirl

Completed: 10th February 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5,Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Around 15 minutes

My current lab-rat, Ssuppers, dressed as a Harajuku Schoolgirl. The red-Aisha + this customization is really growing on me - who knows? May eventually morph her back into a Aisha in the end.

Dirigibles: DD games set + 1 Snarkie

Completed: 2nd March 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5,Photoshop Elements
Time taken: 10-15 minutes each

Quick doodles of Dirigibles and Snarkie doing the DD games done in class to keep me awake. Unreferenced, hence the funkiness of the bike. These were incredibly fun to do though!

Dirigibles: Snot Splatter, Super Hasee Bounce, Wheelers Wild Ride Snarkie: Spinacles

(Due to scanner problems, these were taken via camera. Excuse the gray spots and fuzzy lines.)

Dirigibles: Extreme Kacheek Herder

Completed: 13th February 2010
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5,Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Around twenty minutes

Inspired by SoLiD's support for Dirigibles in the Daily Dare's Staff Tournament and a hilarious convo on the SoLiD boards. Besides, someone's got to herd Samrin.

Doodling Balthazar was tougher than expected - I actually had to pull up a picture reference and he STILL doesn't quite have that mean feel to him. Other than that though, I enjoyed sketching this out - Dirigibles FTW!

Misc. Sketches set 1

Random doodles done in uni; I especially like the fishing one. :3

4Mankey - Bobby quick sketch

Completed: 9th December 2009
Tools: Mechanical pencil 0.5,Photoshop Elements
Time taken: Fifteen minutes

Quick pencil sketch of Bobby for Mankey. Excuse the anatomical blips.

Also, the color is kind of funky because my scanner was broken, so I took a photo instead. Covered it with colors to hide the blahness of the grey tones.

General questions and answers (just add hot water!)

Why is 3/4s of your art of humans? Aren't these supposed to be Neopets?
It's just the style I favor. ;) Think of it as anthro taken a little further.

I keep seeing the term 'CG' pop up in your descriptions. Exactly what is 'CG'? OMCOLTZAN, are you a scammer??
Haha, definitely not! Before the whole 'cookie-grabbing' hoohah, CG generally stood for 'computer graphics' and is used to refer to any form of digital artwork. As I color most of my work using Photoshop, it's become something of a habit for me to use that term as a verb.

Can I use your art in a banner/graphic I'm making?
Unless I gifted the art to you, no, sorry.

What do you usually use to draw/CG(color) in your stuff?
I don't own a tablet, so I usually do my lineart traditionally using a 0.5 mechanical pencil and/or a 0.1 black pen. For coloring, I use Photoshop Elements.

Would you be interested in an art trade/exchange?
Thanks for the offer! I don't generally do art trades though - unless I approached you first, chances are I'll say 'no'. No harm in asking nicely though. ;)

Draw me art of my pet please?
I don't really do giftart unless it's for friends, sorry. I do pop onto Art boards every now and then to take requests though (re: the Tarla Art Board).

Could you do art for my app?
Sorry, I don't do art for applications.

Hey, I saw someone else with your art who claimed he/she drew it. Please NM me the person's UN immediately - stolen art is reportable and punishable by freezing.

I noticed a mistake(s) in your sketch. Should I Neomail you to point it out?
I'm all too aware of the mistakes I make, believe me. Chances are I had already noticed it but was too lazy/far into the coloring process to correct it. If you do still want to point it out though, then be my guest!

Wow, I really like your art! Srzly, can I NM you and say so? Haha, thanks! And sure, go ahead - it's nice to get neomails like that and it sure brightens up one's day.
