You leap up into the air. A whole week of mountain adventuring! "Finally! The sweepstakes have finally paid off!" You shout happily. "I won the sweepstakes!" Exhausted, you take out your matchbook, and flip one out; striking it on the side. You light your small lantern, and notice that the cave you entered goes back a ways. Hearing the wind howling outside keeps making you think of several scenarios, most of which ending in you being thrown outside and off the mountain by the violent winds. The mere thought is enough to make you shudder. So, here you are, crawling with your lantern in one hand, down an icy path in a deserted cave. Well, what seemed to be deserted before your meagre light shows a huge white paw. "Erp-!" You start to scream, but let your voice die in your throat. You push the light closer, and find that the icy blue paw is attached to a white furry body. -A bear, a bear, a bear, a bear, a bear, a bear!- You think rapidly, coming to conclusions. But, as soon at the light shows feathers, you realise that it can't be a bear. You move ever forward, your light showing a large head, with a jagged orange beak! Small wing-like ears sprouted just behind the eyes, shut tight, for the moment. A pair of identical wings sat upon the creature's back, and a long plumed tail stretches around its body. "Woooooooooowww…" You mutter in amazement, bad decision! The creature's eyes snap open, showing huge yellow pupils. "AHHHHHH!" You scream, making the creature do the exact same thing. "What the-?! Who are you, and what are you doing here! Don't you know this mountain is abandoned!?" It demands, in a slightly raspy feminine voice. You shake your head rapidly from side to side, still breathing heavily. It was a cold, snowy night. The air outside was nearly silent, but, the birthing chamber of our tribe of Eyries was full of activity. A single Eyrie was in there, everyone else was a sleep in other dens and caves. A single scream filled the air, yet, it had been a hard day so everyone continued to sleep, unaware of what was happening. The underground chamber was full of hot sweaty air that almost seemed to steam as it flew outside into the hardest snowfall so far that year. Several more screams followed the first, my mother was unprepared. I had come late, so she was feeling a deep relief along with the deep pain. I was her very first cubling, and my mother was unsure of how to tackle the big task. But, everything went well, considering. As the other Eyries in the Tribe awoke the next morning, they heard nothing from the birthing chamber, so they decided to check up on my mother. They found her asleep, with me nestled in her paws. The sudden voices woke me, and I started to cry out. That in turn woke my mother, who quickly comforted me. Everyone congratulated her with the birth of a healthy cubling. Then, the leader of the Tribe, an older white eyrie with pale yellow markings, walked to my mother and gave her a warm smile. "I see that your cubling came in the night, while we were asleep. I'm sorry that no one was awake to help you during that hard time." She had said. "There was no problem, and I have no regrets." My mother said, looking at the small bundle of feathers and fur in her paws. "Then, it is time to name her. I see that she has a jagged beak, which means she will become a strong warrior. We shall give her a warrior's name! Small cubling, your name shall be…Xzathreno!" She said aloud, and all the others cheered happily. "You shall always be my little one, Xzathreno." My mother whispered softly into my ear. The next few weeks went along fine, until, I felt something odd. "Mommy," I had said, a little worried. "What is it, dear?" She asked. We were in the feasting den. The hunters had come along a lot of prey, and it was then and there that I learned about the war. The Eyries of the snowy North, and the Eyries of the Fiery South were fighting. No one knew quite why, just that it was their duty to the Tribe to fight. We needed to eat more, to regain our strength. "My eyes feel funny. Like, lifting up." I said, voice drenched in worry. "Don't worry about it dear, you're just ready to open your eyes now. Go ahead, lift your eyelids up." My mother coaxed. By then the other Eyries had head our conservation, and were waiting with baited breath. It was a funny feeling, sitting there, a mouse in front of me, everyone else around me, as I opened my eyes for the first time. "Yellow!?" Someone beside me squawked out loudly. I blinked, what did they mean? "What is the meaning of this?!" The Leader shouted to my mother, who stepped back with shame. "Only the Eyries of the South have yellow eyes!" She continued to yell. I looked up at the sea of blue eyes around me, with a few green one embedded in with the others. I looked into a bit of ice that had frozen onto a wall, and it reflected me right back. I looked into my own eyes, fierce yellow ones. "I-I'm sorry…" My mother stuttered. I had always thought of her being able to conquer anything. But, now, with her head hung low, her eyes to the ground, and begging for forgiveness, she looked downright pitiful. But the others did not see it like that. They did now pity her. They spat on her instead. "I knew it! That's why you didn't want to go to the last fight that you were assigned to!" I still didn't fully understand. Why was everyone suddenly angry at mommy? "/He/ was there. I couldn't fight him…" My mother said with a sigh. I was starting to understand. "You know that the Eyries of the North and the Eyries of the South are locked in battle! You know that what you did is forbidden! May the gods above have mercy on your soul! You shall be forever punished for what you did. I shall not be finishing my meal. What you did had made me sick!" The leader finished before stalking off. I got it then. They were talking about my dad. From then on, everything went downwards. First, the number of prey was going way down. We couldn't feed ourselves. We were starting to die off. "But, are you sure? I mean, she'll be heart-broken! Xzathreno is all she has!" I overheard the leader speaking with one of her warrior Eyries. I gulped. "It serves her right. It is a fate worse then death, and I know that firsthandedly. We leave at sunrise." I wondered what it meant. But I didn't think much of it. I crawled into my nest and fell asleep. The next morning I awoke late in the afternoon. Everyone had left. Even my mother.
