Back to The Void

Many ask: What is the Void?

It is: the source of all elements, the quintessence.
The void is: Null, Nil, Zip, Nada.
In Buddhism, Shunyata (Emptiness)

Me: .. The absence of stuff :D ..

Also: An abstract term that refers to the uninhabited parts of Tolkien's Middle-earth.

About myself:

I started to play Neopets Sept 2000.
For the most part I stick to my friends and my neofun.
Some of the things I want nothing to do with:
Gossip, lying, complaining, cheating, fighting or anything
that would be against the rules.
I play on this site because I like the rules ...
and the game. Innocent, entertaining fun.

What is it about Neopets that makes it so magical?
It's not neoquest1 thats for sure!
A big part of the charm are the great people I meet.

As an adult player (I am over 50) the site challenges me in many ways!
Games designed for kids! (that is anyone around 30)
HTML filters! Avatars! Ever changing pets!
Premium!!

Fun!!!

Anyways .. I could tell you I am this and do that .. but really .. who cares!

I enjoy meeting people of all ages and from around the globe.
It's great to be part of this international group.

Thank you TNT for the hard work you put into this site!

It's great to have a fun place to sneak off to in your computer room.

It seems quite remarkable
that the concept of 'wisdom' surfaces as a universal
optimal potential living experience within the psychological
space of all individuals.

Holists believe that wise people sense,
work with and align themselves and others to life.
In this view, wise people help others appreciate
the fundamental interconnectedness of life.

thwgatrostys: Inflation and The Facts(from feb,07)

It's been bothering me for a while now, so I just wanted to point this out to people.

Inflation is NOT item prices.

Item prices are a consequence or side effect -OF- inflation.

Inflation is an increase in the density of currency in an economy.

Amount of currency divided by amount of people.

Playing games puts new money into the economy.

Tarla giving away items also puts new money into the economy,
only it's a virtual sort instead of "liquid".

Faerie quests take money/goods out of the economy.

Illusen/Jhudora quests may increase or decrease the money in an economy
depending on if you profit or not.

The reason this all happens is because new people need money,
so they get free items and play games.

You can't take money away from the rich to give to the poor new accounts,
so you have to add money.

To decrease inflation, they make things like the lever of doom so people
spend millions getting avatars.
That's how inflation goes down.

Buying from game shops takes money away, but buying from player shops does NOT.

(comment from someone on the board)

(I forget who it was earlier but someone compared her (tarla) to the Federal Reserve Bank.
Very true.)
(She keeps the econoomy in check, it is necessary.)

thwgatrostys continues:

It brings down user-shop prices, yes.
But it does not help inflation.

Players restock to make money; this takes money out of the economy.
They use that money to buy codestones to train their pets.
Tarla releases more codestones, so they need less money to buy codestones,
so they use less of their restock funding and (over the very long term) restock less.
So less money leaves the economy.
Tarla helps the short-term, not the long-term.
She helps you to buy stuff.
She doesn't help the underlying problem.

Solutions:

I have some tips for Neopets on a few ways to control inflation.

Which actually is possible in a virtual, game economy like this,
because you can do a LOT of things you can't do in a real economy.

Inflation is all about density, like I said.
Neopets has a capitalist economy,
which means there's a curve with some rich, a lot average, and a few destitute.
You can't just take money away from the rich, because they'd quit.
And you can't let the poor stay poor, because they'd quit.
(Also unlike a real economy.)

The way to control inflation in this economy is to take money out
while providing something that does not affect the economy.
More costly avatars is one way.

As for players...*shrug*

Don't price your items too low or you may cause others to do it too.
Just makes it harder to sell for what it's actually worth in the current
economy for those who -don't- lower their prices.
It messes up the natural pattern of supply-and-demand.

Just look at the v-day prices.
Most of the year, steady.
Right before v-day, huge spike due to demand.
They release more, plummet due to increased supply.
People panic, and drop their prices even lower.

So then their prices are actually BELOW what supply-and-demand say they should be.
People buy the cheap ones and use them, decreasing supply.
Price slightly increases.
V-day ends, demand plummets, and things slowly stabilize.

If people wouldn't panic and would think ahead,
the price would remain steady even through v-day.

Buying items from the hidden tower decreases inflation by that amount
(divided by the active population of course),
but only when purchased directly from the tower.
Subsequently selling that item in a user shop for
less does not decrease inflation...it -fails-to- decrease
inflation by the purchase price of the item,
which the next person doesn't have to pay to the game.
No money is removed.

Inflation would be so incredibly much lower if you couldn't
sell items to each other, but always had to buy them from the game.
But the game would be a lot less fun...
and money would be a lot harder to make.

So Neopets lets inflation rise in order to have a fun game,
and then tries to find other ways to decrease it at the same time.

It's a price we pay. :-)

Summery:

Any time you are given something -by-the-game- without losing equal value,
that is inflation.

Any time you give up something -to-the-game- without receiving equal value,
that is deflation.
