The Beginning of Darkness
Introduction

The air smells musty and old as you walk down an ancient corridor. You never thought exploring the woods would bring you to the ruins of an abandoned city. At first, you were hesitant to venture into its labyrinthine walls. But after debating with yourself for a moment, the adventure was too tempting and you walked into the doorway of the city.

The trees that had taken over this place long ago were tall with winding roots that jutted from the sides of the crumbling buildings. The only untouched area of this city was underground. You had managed to find an entrance buried under some large boulders. It was very dark, but you managed to push away your fear and venture into the underground halls.

Thankfully you had packed some matches in your brown messenger's bag. Before you left home with your camping party, something deep within you had told you that it would be a good idea to take them. Your gut was right.

Torches lined the walls of the hallway. They were riddled with spider webs and dust, but it was better than lighting one match after another. You quickly light it and go on your way. It gets darker the further you descend. You occasionally run into a pile of bones or a nest of spiders. You quickly turn the other way and forget the dead that are behind you.

It looked be an old catacomb. That must be where you are. It certainly smells of death enough to be one. Doors line the walls, all locked. But you don't even bother to try to open them. There is one door that has caught your attention, drawing it away from all of the others.

It doesn't have a lock or any other means of security holding it shut. Its dark wooden face looks down at you, smiling with brass locks and hinges. Dark brass bands travel across it, giving it extra strength.

You place your hand on the dark metal handle. It feels cold against your skin. Suddenly the smell of death and the distant beating of bat wings disappear as you push open the door.

And to your surprise, a beautiful being sits on the stone table in the middle of the room, looking up at your with aqua eyes.

She doesn't seem shocked or scared of your sudden appearance. But she smiles at you warmly and looks back down at her hands.

Something shifts in her palms. It looks like bubbling goo, only it was black and seemed to float in the air on its own. It soon takes the shape of a dragon and then of a wolf until it finally settles into the shape of a galloping horse. With a satisfied smile, the kougra flicks her hand and the dark horse hardens into a sculpture and turns bright red. She sets it aside and meets your eyes.

Hello, human. Curious are we?" She asks, looking down at her work. "It is a rare gift to be able to make shades." Her hand gently caresses the horse's sleek body.

How…How did you do that?" You stumble for words, not able to take your eyes from the shade.

Like I said, it's a rare gift." She stands and stretches out her arms. "My name is Vriya. I'm a shademaker. And you are?"

You tell her your name, finally looking at her for the first time. She is indeed a sight. Her dark teal skin contrasted beautifully with her pale aqua eyes. Her dark blue hair hung in front of her eyes and she sprouted two black wings. They seemed to be made out of the same shadowy goo she had formed the horse from.

She wore a black tailed shirt that buttoned up the front with brass buttons. Her pants were also black and scrunched at the knees. She didn't wear any shoes, but archer's stockings came halfway up her shins.

It's nice to meet you." She nods. She picked up the horse and set it in a large chest where similar statues were stored.

It takes you a moment to find the courage to ask, but you finally open your mouth. "What is a shademaker?" You feel somewhat foolish not knowing. Vriya closes the chest and once again takes a seat on the stone table.

I'm glad you asked. Let me tell you…"

Shademaker

A shademaker is a strange creature chosen before birth to make shades for people to enjoy. Many fear the shademakers because of their names. But this title was chosen at the beginning of time. The great elders could have chosen the name makeablemakers or statue makers. But these names just didn't have the same impression.

Plus the way the shades are made has something to do with the name as well.

The shademaker's power is a strange one- there is no question about that. But in order to use their powers, blood must be shed. With a single drop of their own blood, they can make many different types of shades.

The blood mixes with the shadow powers given to them and therefore infuses the shadow with life. These shadows can then be transformed into any shape the shademaker wills. They are then set out into the world for others to collect.

Some calls these figures, statues, makeables, and many other strange names. But the name chosen by the elders is the shade.
