Taking a Stroll
The old house on the corner lot has been vacant for quite some time now. The front lawn is overgrown with weeds and the walkway to the door is cracked an dented. The window blinds are torn and tattered and you can peer through them into the empty house. As you walk by, your eyes remain glued to the old home. You stop and stare for a moment at the house and a strange sensation to go inside overcomes you.
The house has no fence bordering it so you go around to the back to see if there is a way in. The backyard is just as overgrown as the front, if not worse. After trudging through the thick grass, you finally make it to the back door, which you find to be conveniently unlocked and slightly opened. You slowly push the door open and peer into the house, quietly stepping into the kitchen where the door led to.
You continue slowly past the dusty kitchen to the living room and stairs. There doesn't seem to be anything very interesting in the living room except for an old dust-covered sofa, so you look to the stairwell. There appears to be light shimmering through a window that illuminates the hall above. Once again, your curiosity takes over and you are drawn upstairs. Upon reaching the top, you see that the hall has four doors; two on either side; One particular room down the hall interests you the most; its door is open ever so slightly that a small beam of light shines through.
You creep down the hall and tap the door open. The room appears to have been a little girl's room for the peeling wall paper is a pink color with darker and lighter pink stripes. And there, on the right side of the room is a small bay window with a seat and sitting on that seat is a stuffed rabbit. You look closer at the plush and notice it is not covered in dust like everything else in the house, infact it seems almost brand new.
You pick up the stuffed rabbit and admire it. Who ever lived here before must miss the poor thing. You set it back down and turn back towards the door.
You're not going to play with me?
You freeze in your tracks and slowly look over your shoulder at the seat. The stuffed rabbit is now standing up on its own... and is looking at you sadly.
Well? Are you?
You turn the rest of your body to the stuffed rabbit, falling on your knees as you do so.
Wh-what kind of toy are you!?
Um... The rabbit looks over herself, as if she wasn't sure what to answer with. Well I am a plushie, so I guess that means I'm the stuffed kind of toy?
No... you're just.. a stuffed animal.. there's no way you should be able to talk and move on your own!
Oh.. well, that's not true.. there are lots of plushies that can move and talk!
The stuffed rabbit flops back down and holds her feet as she rocks back and forth on the window seat.
Wha... what are you talking about? The only plushies that should be able to do that are pets that are painted plushie, not real-er, regular plushies...
The stuffed rabbit stops rocking and leans forward a bit with a surprised look on her face.
You mean you've never awoken a plushie's spirit before?
No.. no I haven't... I never even knew plushies HAD spirits!
The stuffed rabbit giggles and rocks back and forth again.
Heehee of course we do! Every plushie has a spirit, but only some ever get to be awoken.
And why is that?
Well because... She stops rocking. Some plushies are just harder to awaken than others, I guess.
After a few minutes of awkward silence, the rabbit says, My name is Velboa but you can call me Velly. What's your name?
Oh, uh... my name is guest... I'm still a bit lost on the whole 'plushies having spirits' thing.
Oh, well that's alright! Velboa leaps down from the chair and stands infront of you.
Here, I'll explain...
The Life of a Plushie
First, I'll tell you about the two kinds of plushies.
There's more than one?
Well there's more than one kind of person, right? So of course there's more than one kind of plushie!
The first kind of plushie is the handmade plushie. This is where people make a plushie by hand and each one is very unique. I'm a handmade plushie so that means there isn't another plushie around that is like me. The second kind is the factory made plushie. Instead of being handmade, these plushies are made in a factory and they're almost all alike.
Every plushie, whether it's made in a factory or made by hand, has a spirit.
A plushie's spirit is awoken when it is loved without a doubt.
A handmade plushie is already partly awake when it's finished because when someone makes their own plushie, they put a lot of effort and love into it. But factory made plushies take longer to awaken since when a plushie is made in a factory, there is no effort or love put into it, just stuffing.
And once a plushie is finished being made, their life begins.
The life of a plushie is usually an easy and happy one; we don't need to eat, we don't need to sleep, and only occasionally do we ever need baths. On top of that, you're loved and played with a lot. Though that doesn't always last forever... sometimes people outgrow you and forget about you... sometimes the life of a plushie is a sad one.
Some plushies are played with by children, and some are set on top of shelves to be collected and adored. Either way, each plushie is loved in some way.
Plushies that are played with get to go on wild and crazy adventures, but sometimes if a plushie is played with too much, they'll get torn or ripped or even get dirty.
Plushies that are played with have their spirit awakened the most, but not many live very long because a plushie will get worn out and sometimes they can never be fixed. A plushie that can never be fixed, like it was burned or torn up, usually means that plushie dies.
Plushies that are kept on shelves don't have exciting adventures and they don't normally ever fully awaken, but they tend to live the longest.
But if you're lucky enough, someone will love you a lot and for a really long time; they won't forget about you or abondon you and their love for you awakens your spirit!
So you must be one of the lucky ones to have been awoken and still in one piece, huh?
Heh, yeah. The little girl that lived here before took really good care of me, or at least she did for a while...
How One Came to Be
There was a little girl called Emily who was turning six
years old and her grandmother created me as a special gift. Creating me was an exciting project for Emily's grandmother and she put a lot of effort into finishing me. By the time I was put in a box that was wrapped in pretty paper, I was already aware of what was happening and I was excited.
When Emily's birthday came, she opened my box last and she adored me the most out of all her other gifts.
Oh wow Gramma! A stuffed bunny! She picked me up out of my little package and held me up to the light and smiled happily.
I love her, Gramma! What should I name her?
Well, dear, her grandma said. I don't know. She is made out of a plushie material called velboa. Maybe you can call her that?
Vel-boa... or.. Velly!
From that day on, I was Emily's favorite play thing. She had other toys and plushies too, but she didn't love any of them as much as she loved me. Sometimes Emily would get messy and I would get messy too, so her mother had to clean me up. Getting cleaned wasn't fun, but if it meant I got to play with Emily again, it was alright.
I was also Emily's best friend; whenever she was sad or lonely, she would come to me and we'd play together and then she would feel much better.
Emily took me with her everywhere. She even took me to strange place with other little kids called 'school.' I watched some of them and they didn't seem as nice as Emily.
Why do you always carry that stupid stuffed animal around?
She's not stupid! Velly is my best friend!
How can a toy be your best friend? It doesn't have a heart or mind like a person does.
Those kids made Emily sad and I wanted to comfort her, but I couldn't. When me and Emily got home, she went straight to her room and sat on her bed with me on her lap.
They said a best friend needs a heart.. and a mind.. I can give you one of those, Velboa. I can!
Then Emily set me down on her bed and opened her sliding closet door. She looked through all her shirts that were hanging up and picked out two; a bright pink one and a yellow one. Emily found a pair of scissors and cut a heart from the pink shirt and a star from the yellow shirt. She then took a needle and thread and stitched the heart to my chest and the star to the top of my head. Being poked by a needle hurt a little bit, but when it was all done it felt very nice.
There, Velly! Now you have a heart and mind!
The next day, Emily showed me to the other kids at school and said, Look! She has a heart, emily pointed to my chest. And a mind! Then she pointed to my head. The other kids just looked at her funny and laughed.
Hahaha, putting a heart and a star on a toy isn't the same thing! You're such a weird-o!
After that day, everything changed. Emily still brought me to school, but the kids still made fun of her so she stuffed me in her backpack until we got home. She kept me in her backpack for a few days after that, but then one day, Emily didn't take me to school with her at all! I was so worried and afraid that the mean kids would tease her and I wouldn't be there to make her happy again. Finally, after waiting for hours, Emily came home! And she wasn't upset, she was happy! The happiest I've seen her in a long time, too.
Things still continued to change. Emily didn't take me to school with her and she didn't snuggle with me when it was bed time. One day, Emily came home and I heard another girl with her. Emily came into her room and there WAS another girl with her!
Wow, you have a neat room! The other girl said. And aaw! What a cute stuffed bunny! The girl picked me up from Emily's bed and smiled, almost the same way Emily did when we first met.
Yeah, my gran'ma made it for me. Well c'mon, let's go!
The other girl turned back to the door and dropped me on Emily's bed. I sat up and could hear them race each other down the hall. Sigh...
Soon each day when Emily got home, she only came into her room to set her
backpack down, then she'd run back down stairs to play outside with the other kids. Emily didn't play with me at all anymore and the only time she held me was so she could move me to her window seat. I was becoming very lonely and I missed Emily a lot.
Days passed and Emily hardly touched me. Then one day, I heard a whole bunch of other kids inside the house. They all seemed really excited, even Emily. That's when I realized today was Emily's 7th birthday! I wanted to be down there with her so I slid off the window seat and ran down the hall and to the stairs as fast as I could. But once I got to the stairs, Emily's mom was coming up so I had to lay flat like a normal plushie does. She looked down at me and shook her head.
Emily, when are you going to learn to pick up after yourself...
She scooped me up and held her in her arms with a bunch of other toys that I guessed were Emily's new gifts. She took us up to Emily's room where she opened her closet then lifted the lid so some sort of box that held a bunch of other toys. Emily's mom set us all, even me, inside that box and closed the lid.
Huh!? This new placed was dark and cramped and I didn't like it at all!
I stayed in that box all night until Emily opened it the next day. When I saw her face, I became so happy and excited again! Emily was going to play with me! But instead of reaching down to me, she grabbed one of her newer playthings and closed the lid once she got it out. I stayed in that box, sad and alone. Any other time Emily opened the lid and got something out, the other toys would shift and I'd be pulled in deeper and deeper each time until I was at the bottom. I recognized many of the other toys around me; a lot of them were the gifts Emily got on her 6th birthday. I felt very sad, not just for myself but for the other toys that were left alone and forgotten.
It was a long time before the box was opened again, and when it was, the little bit of light that reached me hurt my eyes. All of a sudden I could feel the box being lifted up and tipped over and without warning, the lid
opened and all of the toys fell into a new box.
But as I slid down on the inside of the old box, it was suddenly turned upright and set back down with me still inside. I peered out through the small hole between the top of the box and the lid. Emily's room looked much different. There were cardboard boxes everywhere and all her furniture was gone. I saw people take the boxes away, but I didn't know where to.
Is that everything?
Yep, so let's get going!
Wait, what about Emily's old toy box?
Just leave it. The old thing's about to fall apart, we can just get her a new one when we're all moved in.
All moved in? What did they mean? I could hear the sound of an engine coming from outside. It was loud at first then it slowly began to fade and then I couldn't hear anything. I don't know how long I sat in that box, but I didn't hear anything for a very long time. I decided it was time for me to get out of this thing so I pushed the lid up with all my might, just enough so I could squeeze out. I popped out and rolled on to Emily's wooden floor. When I stood up, there was a bunch of icky grey stuff all over me! Ick! What is this!? It seemed to rub away and I was able to continue looking around. Emily's room was completely empty; the only thing in there was the wooden box I was in. I wonder if there's anything else in the house.. I walked down the empty hall and looked in all the empty rooms, then went down the stairs to the living room. I was surprised to see the sofa and arm chair still there. I then wandered into the kitchen. It was also empty; no table, no dishes, not even the mat by the back door. The back door... it was open! The back door led to the backyard where me and Emily used to play. I pulled the door open, which was pretty hard to do, but once I did I was able to see the backyard for the first time in a very long time. It didn't change much except that the grass was taller than normal and there were leaves left on the ground and that was all; nothing else, and definitely no Emily. But the backyard was all mine and I could do whatever I wanted! So I decided to go exploring.
The grass was harder to walk through than I thought; normally Emily held me whenever we went in the backyard. I went all around the yard, around trees and behind bushes. Exploring behind the bushes was the most fun since I found a lot of lost things like toy shovels and bouncy balls, but when I tried to climb out, I was stuck! But I was finally able to wriggle free of the branches - or so I thought. When I tried walking back to the house, I felt a tug on my ear then heard a loud RIIIP. GASP! Oh no! I got my ear out and saw that there was a huge rip on the back. Oooh... what do I do about this... I sadly dragged my feet back to the house, through the dusty kitchen, up the stairs, through the empty hall and back into Emily's room. Ooooh.. what am I to do? You're not here, Emily, and you always fixed any holes I got.. mmm... While sitting on the dusty wooden floor, I looked at the hopeless tear in my ear then glanced down at the heart on my chest. Gasp! That's it! I hopped up and went around the entire house again, but this time I was searching for some fabric to patch me up.
During my search, I found a lost old needle, some thread, an old pair of jeans and an old shirt someone left behind. I didn't know how to really sew, but I remembered watching Emily stitch my heart on; it couldn't be that hard.
It was tricky to cut out little squares of fabric and even more tricky to sew them on since I don't have thumbs. But after several tries, I got each patch to cover the tear perfectly! Even though sewing was a bit difficult, I liked it a lot. I tried making other things out of the rest of the pants and shirt. I got better and better each time, too! However, it took me a very long time to be able to sew perfectly, maybe even a few months. But all that time being by myself made me bored and lonely and I wanted a friend...
Oh! Speaking of which, here comes Twill!
Velly leaped up on her feet and points behind you. You turn your head to see a teddy bear waddling over to you.
What's a.. Twill?
The stuffed bear makes his way past you and stands at Velly's side.
The Teddy Bear
This is Twill and I was just about to tell you about him!
Over the few months I practiced my sewing I also found more fabric bits I could use to make things. I wasn't sure what kind of plushie friend I wanted, so I chose to go with the first thing that popped in my mind; a teddy bear! My teddy bear friend had to be perfect so making him took much, much longer than any of the other things I made. Finally, days upon days of sewing and cutting and sewing some more, my teddy bear friend was finished!
Name: Twill
Gender: Boy
Special traits: I made him!
My new friend who I have named Twill was super soft and squishy, the perfectly huggable plushie! The best part about Twill is that his spirit has also been awoken! But unlike me, he can't speak, he can only move.
Twill is very cautious and doesn't like going outside. I think he's afraid of being torn like I was.
But Twill is always there for me so I'm almost never sad or lonely anymore. We like to play games like tag and hide and seek, or just sit on the window seat with each other.
Twill is my best friend, even better than Emily, and I love him with all my heart!

Twill tugs at Velly's side and points at the closet doors.
Oh that's right!
Velly and Twill stride over to the closet and together, push one of the doors to the side so that it reveals the old toy chest. Taped up on the front of the chest are a bunch of papers with drawings of what appears to be Velboa.
Before I show you what's inside this box, I want to show you these!
You crawl over to the closet to see the images better.

Make Your Own
Once you are done looking at Velly's pictures, she lifts the chest lid up and Twill climbs up her back to push the lid fully open.
You look into the chest and see a bunch of unstuffed plushies.
During my spare time, I made other plushies, too. You're welcome to take any that you like and turn them into something wonderful!

Patches
You soon realize that you have spent a lot of time in this little room with Velly and that you should probably be on your way.
I'm sorry Velly, but I gotta go now...
You see that Velly's face is stricken with sadness. Y-you're leaving..?
Hey, don't be sad! You taught me a lot about plushies, many things I never knew! And don't worry, whenever I walk by this house again, I'll make sure to stop in and say hello!
Well, alright then! She perks up. Then take a patch so you don't forget, okay?
