A Shooting Star...
They say growing up is one of the hardest parts of life, and I'd probably have to agree with them, even though I'm not sure who 'they' are. My name is Valamay, but I'm called Vala. I don't remember when I was born, what my parents look like, or where I came from, but I do remember the day Rachel found me...
My eyes had just opened and I was in a pen with my siblings. My vision was still a bit blurry so I can't remember what they looked like or what my mother looked like, but I remember their voices and smell. I was in the pound then so I must have been born there. A techo came inside and put a sign on our pen, I later found out it read 'Lupe pups - 5 neopoints.
Quite a few neopians came in that day and played with us, one of my siblings leaving with one of the humans ever so often. In a few hours, only one brother and me remained. We were the runts and shyest of the litter so it's not unlikely that we were the last ones.
A young neopian girl, around 16 at the time, wandered toward our cage. She had wavy, shoulder-length auburn hair and two squirrel ears popped through a blue bucket hat. She peered at the both of us and giggled. I crawled over my mother to try and hide but she opened the door and picked up my sibling. I watched as she looked him over, petted him, and placed him back inside. She took me next...
She held me up to her face and smiled. I squirmed around in her grip, just wanting to stay with my brother but she held me close and calmed me by humming. She rubbed her fingers across my star marking and smiled.
You..." She said smiling, "are special...
With that, she left the pound with me. I looked over her shoulder as we walked away from my kennel. My mother let out a howl that still plays in my head til this day. I yipped back and with that, she was gone.
I was introduced to my new home after a short stop to the market, where Rachel A.K.A. Bree bought me a silver star necklace. At first I was not to sure about my new home. I was 'attacked' by a purple wocky named Glor and stalked by a tiny aisha named Dinari.
Seasons passed and I grew stronger and older with my new siblings. Glor and Dinari become my best friends along with a small anubis I named Tru. My star marking developed three silver moons around it and two small golden bumps grew on my back. Glor found it great fun to use them as handles and ride on my back.
As I grew up, Bree entered me in the beauty contest with Tru. We won a few times and Bree and I came fairly well known. After a while though, I started thinking about where I originally was. Dinari knew where he was from and so did Glor. I was the only one who had no clue...I was 'special' since neither of them had any original markings.
I was old enough to wander on my own and did so often. I became a loner soon and found myself in the middle of a war between the hunters and kougras. I was hired as a tracker, to lead the hunters to them. Bree was busy with work so my family didn't notice me missing.
It was a cold, misty morning when I was beat for letting a kougra cub escape. I attacked the hunter and immediatly fled for my life. I ran as far as I could before I met someone who would change my life. Her name was Teal.
Teal was a kougra, but she wasn't just a kougra. She was 'special'. She lived alone, no one ever owned her. She was a piratess and princess to the ones we were hunting. Even though she knew I had been a tracker, she and her village took me in and I quickly started defending them.
As I spent time with the kougras, I watched many changes to their land. With time, the hunters were defeated but of the original royal family, only Teal remained. She was a loner like me. The bumps on my back stopped growing and I began to find myself on the Isle of Kougie.
Traces of other kinds were found on the Isle, along with those of a lupe pack whose markings looked identical to my own. It would be a few months til I found their cave...and who I really was.
It was raining that afternoon as I tramped through the jungle, following any lupe scent I could. Mud splattered and clung to my fur as I continued on. I was about to turn around and go home when a light caught my attention. It was coming from a small entrance way in a rock wall.
I padded toward it, ears perked, unsure of what or who was creating the light. I lowered my body into the mud and crawled inside the cavern, only to find a room filled with drawings on the walls and a large 'mural' of the night sky on the top. The stars in the mural were created the light as they twinkled and danced. A smile crossed my maw as a shooting star flew across the ceiling. This was not just a mural...
As I stared at it longer, the bumps on my back grew larger until they unfolded into 2 golden-blue tipped wings. I was lifted off the floor a little as I moved them. I laughed and smiled at Tru as she barked from the floor. The markings on the walls light up and a howl was heard...my mother...
The rain stopped outside and the night sky came out. The howl left the cavern and sounded outside. I folded my wings up and crawled out with Tru. I looked up and smiled at the stars. For the first time, a real feeling of comfort came over me. I smiled as I thought I saw a lupe smiling back at me in the stars.
I unfolded my wings and put Tru on my back. We took off into the sky, my necklace beginning to glow, I howled and soared through the clouds. I stopped and looked down at the ground, I could see the entire Isle and other far off lands. I smiled to myself. Something was right here...I was meant to be in the sky.
It's true...I haven't found my family yet, but I know if I continue to search the skies, I will. I know now what Bree meant by me being special. I was unique in more than one way. My name is Valamay Volker...and I'm not just your average happy go-lucky lupess...
