West Indian Manatee

The manatee's closest land relatives are the elephant and the hyrax, a small, gopher-sized mammal. Manatees are believed to have evolved from a wading, plant-eating animal. The West Indian manatee is related to the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, the dugong, and to the Steller's sea cow, which was hunted to extinction in 1768. The average adult manatee is about three meters (9.8 feet) long and weighs between 362-544 kilograms (800-1,200 pounds). West Indian manatees in the United States are protected under federal law by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and the Endangered Species Act of 1973, which make it illegal to harass, hunt, capture, or kill any marine mammal. ENDANGERED

Seals

A seal is a mammal that can live both in and out of the water. Seals have think layers of flat, flippers for limbs and hairy coats for protection from sand and rocks. Seals are six meters long and weigh about 150 pounds. Most seals eat a variety of fish and shellfish.Every spring pregnant female seals go up on land to have their pups. It takes almost a full year for a pregnant female seal to have a pup. They have one pup each year. The adult males are called bulls.Female seals are called cows. Seals defend themselves by making loud noises or swimming away fast. Their enemies are the shark, man, and the killer whale. For years man hunted deals for their coats, blubber and meat and almost made them extinct. The United States passed a law in 1972 to stop the hunting of seals. Now you can see a lot more seals along the beaches. NO LONGER ENDANGERED

Atlantic Sea Turtle

The green sea turtle is the largest hard-shelled sea turtle. The average size of a female nesting in Florida is 101.5 cm straight carapace length. Hatchling green turtles weigh about 25 g (about a handful of Smarties) and have a carapace about 50 mm long. Hatchlings are black on top and white underneath. The plastron of Atlantic green turtles remains a yellowish white throughout life, but the carapace changes colour from black to various shades of gray, green, brown and black, forming swirls and irregular patterns on their shells. ENDANGERED

Hammerhead Shark

Hammerhead sharks use their oddly shaped heads to improve their ability to find prey. Their wide-set eyes give them a better visual range than most other sharks. And by spreading their highly specialized sensory organs over their wide, mallet-shaped head, they can more thoroughly scan the ocean for food.
The great hammerhead is the largest of the nine identified species of this shark. It can grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) in length and weigh up to 1,000 pounds (450 kg), although smaller sizes are more common.
Hammerhead populations are not accurately known, but appear stable worldwide, and they are NOT CONSIDERED THREATENED.

Electric Eel

Despite their serpentine appearance, electric eels are not actually eels. Their scientific classification is closer to carp and catfish.
These freshwater predators get their name from the enormous electrical charge they can generate to stun prey and dissuade predators. Their bodies contain electric organs with about 6,000 specialized cells that store power. When threatened or attacking prey, these cells will discharge simultaneously, emitting a burst of at least 600 volts, five times the power of a standard U.S. wall socket.
As air-breathers, they must come to the surface frequently. They also have poor eyesight.Electric eels can reach huge proportions, exceeding 8 feet in length and 44 pounds in weight.
Human deaths from electric eels are extremely rare. NOT ENDANGERED very common.
