Before you Start, an Introduction to the World of Screenie Art

Welcome! Although this is called 'screenie' art help you can use this anywhere to decorate or narrate WebPages. Who knows? Maybe I'm talking to the next big comic artist for the Neopian Times. I will try to keep things simple. But explaining and re-explaining how to use MS Paint is really annoying. If you can't figure out how to use a tool it might be because I already explained it earlier on the page. But if you are stuck you can neomail me. But try it first please, for my sanity.

WARNING!
This is how to make screenie and other art NOT how to make a screenie. To learn that you can go to several other places like here or if you need more help you can look here.

I had a poll on the boards for a while to see how people could get higher ratings. People said that they were more interested in screenies with funny characters. But they give lower rates if the characters are poorly drawn. So if you can't draw at all you should stick with text. But if you have even minimal skill you should try some characters.
Also you are more likely to get people to read you screenies later in the day. Early in the day you come the more likely someone will yell spammer. And when ever I ask or make a board on it people say that asking people to rate your screenies is fine.

Did you do you Screenies all on MS?

If you did all your screenie art in 100% MS Paint then you can have my award. Why? Because I have taken some computer art classes in school, and you know what I learned? MS Paint bombs. It's a terrible way to learn how to make screenies, but most of use can't afford to just go out and buy Photoshop can we? So if you are like me and are forced to do your screenies on MS Paint then you have won. If you choose to do you're screenies this way you're an idiot, but you still win. You can get the code below.

All the tools, an Overview

Hello my friends, I am back. I noticed that my stick figure section was missing parts and thought that I might replace it… but I have a problem. After five months of cushy Photoshop and Illustrator classes in school I completely forgot how to use my old-school MS Paint! Oppose. Well here I will re-teach myself and maybe you can pick up on a few new tricks.

The first thing I needed to do is remember what all the tools do. I will go in order from top left to bottom right. If you already know how to use a tool you can skip around but for the next sections you should read the Curve Tool and the Polygon Tool. Remember, if you make a mistake then go to edit, then undo. You can only undo three times in a row.
Free Form Select This tool may look odd but its very use full. This tool lets you cut-out part of your drawing and move it to another part of your drawing. The part that you cut-out will be on top.
(If you want to fallow along with me you will need to draw a large black shape and then a small gray shape.)
First select the tool, then hold down the right mouse button and draw a circle around the small gray shape. When you release the button a square will appear around your shape. Click and drag the gray shape into the big black shape. You will see that any background color you circled will move with the shape. To remove the background color look below the tools where two new option will have appeared. These options appear everything you select the tool. Click the second option. The background color should disappear. Now you can click anywhere else on the screen to select a new piece or you can select a new tool. If you didn't click the second option before releasing your object then you can't go back and fix it.

Select This is almost exactly the same tool as above. The only difference is that you can only select a square. This is a lot faster but not as accurate.
Eraser Hum, I wonder what this could do? You guessed it, this tool erases. But what you erased might not turn back to white. For example if you have a blue background color then the eraser will be blue. What to know what your background color is? You can change it by left-clicking a color form your palate.
Fill with Color I always call this one the paint bucket tool. And I think you know how it works too. If you draw a shape you can use the paint bucket to fill it in, or change the background color. You have to be careful that when you use it the shape you drew is completely closed.
Pick Color This I call the eyedropper. You can use this to pickup colors you used somewhere else on the page. Or you can get a color out of a picture that you brought into paint. It's very useful, I use it a lot. You can left-click or right-click to use it, but remember that if you left-click you will need to hold down the left button when you draw to use the color you eye-dropped.
Magnifier This tool has a nick-name too, must of us call it the magnifying glass. Either way it will do the same thing. You click the tool, you select one of the options below, and then it will zoom you in. This is good for detail work. To zoom out select it again and choose x1, that's has far out as you can go.
Pencil I hate this tool X.X I can't draw with it the line it too thin and its all bumpy and itchy. Its very simple, click, drag, draw. If you can draw well with it go for it, I can't so I won't.
Brush This is like an improved pencil. There a lots of different styles and sizes. I still don't like to free hand but if you want to draw a decretive border or backdrop this would be the tool to use. Click on the tool and play around with it, the same as pencil, hold down the left or right mouse key depending what color you want.
Airbrush Think spray-paint. There are three size options that show up depending on what you want. I don't use this tool often but it's really fun. It gives your art a light, airy feel. I once used it to make a scarf that a Grandma was knitting. Just hold down either the left or right mouse keys depending on the color you want.
Text Never hand write anything, use text. This tool only works when you're zoomed out all the way. You can change fonts and sizes, all the usual. You should try to make the box just a little bigger then you think it needs to be so you have room to type. The right-click and drag to make the box.
Line This is the straight line tool, its very straight forward. You can change the line girth in the options below, I normally use at lest a two. Click and drag, very simple. If you just drew a line and you chose a new color or line size then the line will change. You can't change it back so edit, undo and try again. To prevent mistakes chose a different tool after drawing a line, then change the color.
Curved Line This is my number one tool, and it's a bit tricky so I'm going to go into a little more detail. Okay, step one, select the tool, and the thickness of the line. Step two, click where you want the line to start, hold down the mouse key and drag the line to where you want it to end. Three, click on the line near the start and drag it to where you want the curve to be. Four, click on the end and move the line again. If you mix up those steps you will get a 'loop' or a really weird 'point'.

Rectangle This one is pretty simple. When you click on it you get three options, form top to bottom they are: draw just the outline, draw just the fill (background) color, or draw with both the outline and the fill color. If you want to change the thickness of the line, click on line tool and adjust it there. You can also keep you squares more square by holding down the shift key while you draw.
Polygon Polygon just means a shape with three or more sides. You have the same options as the rectangle tool, form top to bottom they are: draw just the outline, draw just the fill (background) color, or draw with both the outline and the fill color. You draw the shape the same way as you would use the line tool, but when you finish the shape will always close.
Eclipse (circle) The same as rectangle only rounder, hold down shift for perfect circles.
Rounded Rectangle The same as rectangle only rounder, but not as round a circle. Sort of like if the rectangle tool took the circle tool out to Vegas, saw a show, ate some food and had a drink, then got married and had a kid and named it Rounded Rectangle.
Color Palate Did you think the last tool was the rounded rectangle? Not true, because this is a help page I should go over everything you might need help with, colors being one. New paint pages always have black and white selected. You can change the color in the black square by clicking on any color with your right mouse button. You can change the color in the white square with the left button. The left color is also you background or fill color. You can get new colors my double clicking on any color in the palate. A little window will pop up with more options. Don't see the exact color you want? Try define custom colors (button on widow) there you can get any color in the rainbow and few extra. If you want to edit a color you are using but you don't have it in your palate? Go to the top of the paint screen and go to colors, edit colors. It's very useful.

Simple People

Now that you know the tools its time to draw something. I think now is a great time to replace my deficient stick figure lesson. Here we will learn simple people.
Step 1) Open a new paint document and decide who you will draw, I will draw two, a boy on the right and a girl on the left.
Step 2) Select the line tool and change the thickness of the line to the third down.
Step 3) Select the circle tool and chose the very first option. Then hold down the shift key and draw a circle about the size of a quarter.

Always draw the head first, I don't care what you are drawing, but if it has a head draw that first. Next I want you to draw the shirt or dress, depending what gender you are doing.
Step 1) Pick a new color from the palate.
Step 2) Select the line tool and draw two lines off the bottom of the head, try to make them as even as possible.
Step 3) For a tee-shirt use the straight line tool to connect the bottom of the two lines. For a dress use a curved line.

Does it look like a person yet? Let's try adding legs. If you skipped the tools section prepare to be confused. Draw the legs next to your person, not under it. Trust me it helps.
Step 1) Pick a new color from the palate.
Step 2) Select the polygon tool and draw two legs beside your person (see picture below).
Step 3) If you did not close the shape then the polygon tool will do it for you.

I had you draw the legs beside the drawing because you will want the shirt (or dress) on top of the legs. Now its time to use another new tool, select.
Step 1) Use the paint bucket to fill in the shirt with a new color.
Step 2) Select the select tool or free-form select tool and use it to capture the shirt and head.
Step 3) Click on the second option and make sure that your background color is white.
Step 4) Move your selection over the legs.

Did I lose you? I hope not, this is why I made a tool section. That is the hardest step in this section so the rest should be easy as pie. Mmmm, pie.
Step 1) Use the paint bucket to fill in the legs with a new color.
Step 2) Decide if you want all the colors solid, my way with a dark color outline, or with a black outline.
Step 3) Select the line tool and the fifth option down for a thicker line. Add feet.

Now we can have some fun! I want you to think of this next part like a salad bar. I will give you a few choices and you can decide what you want on your drawing. I always draw hair first.
Step 1) Look at the drawing below and choose a hair style.
Step 2) Find that hair style in the how-to under the picture.

Spiked
Step 1) Use the line tool to draw a spiky outline
Step 2) Fill it all in with the paint bucket
Step 3) Zoom in with the magnifying glass to make sure the color got inside all the tips.

Retro
Step 1) Use the curvy line tool to draw the main shape, it should only take four lines.
Step 2) Fill it in brown, or black, or blond (whatever)
Step 3) Use the curvy tool again to make the color (two lines)
Emo
Step 1) Use the line tool to draw a zigzag across the forehead.
Step 2) Use the curvy line tool to connect the sides of the zigzag to the top of your head.
Step 3) Fill it in with the paint bucket.

Ponies
Step 1) Use the curvy line tool to make two half-moons on the top of the head.
Step 2) Use the curvy tool again to make the ponies tails. Make one line just a gentle curve coming up and away from the head. The second curve should be wider at the base and meet with the first curve in a point. (I messed this part up two or three times so don't get frustrated)
Step 3) Use the paint bucket on the black head line where you want it to be yellow, if the whole head changes color you need to use the paint brush to 'brake' the line.
Step 4) Finally fill in the hair yellow (or any other color) and use the brush tool to add scrunches.

Hat
Step 1) Draw one curvy line starting at one side of the head and ending at the other. Then pull it out to make the hat-flap thingy.
Step 2) Now do the same thing again only this time don't pull the line away from the head, this will be the line where the hat flap meets the rest of the hat.
Step 3) Fill into the hat any color you want, make the top of the head the same color as the hat lines.

Long
Step 1) First use the straight line tool to make a zigzag across the top of the head.
Step 2) Now use the curvy line tool to make the sides of the hair, you can make the hair as long as you want.
Step 3) Use the straight line tool to connect the bottom of the hair and fill in the hair color and the top of the head.

Is it starting to look like you? Is it you? The character on my page isn't me and yours can be anyone really, no one will ever know. But it can't be anyone until it has a face!
Step 1) Use the biggest, roundest brush tool to make some eyes
Step 2) Want to add sleeves? Use the line tool and fill it in!
Step 3) Arms? How about the curvy line tool? Hands? Maybe you should try the circle tool. But wait, there's more! I like how the hair thing worked out so I'll do the same thing with different types of mouth.

Talkative
Step 1) Use the curvy line tool to make a smile
Step 2) And again to add a bottom lip
Step 3) The eyes were done with the paint brush.

Happy
Step 1) First draw one straight line with the straight line tool.
Step 2) Connect the ends of the line with the curvy line tool.
Step 3) You can fill in the mouth and draw the eyes with curvy lines.

*yawn*
Step 1) Use the circle tool for the mouth
Step 2) Use the curvy line tool to make eyes.

Asleep
Step 1) Use the paintbrush tool for the mouth.
Step 2) The eyes are just a straight curvy lines
Step 3) The straight line tool will make some good Zs.

Sad
Step 1) First use the curvy line to make a frown
Step 2) Then add eyes with the paint brush

Play Dead
Step 1) A couple straight lines for the eyes.
Step 2) One straight line for the mouth and one curved line for a tongue.
Step 3) Add one super thin (dark red) straight line inside the tongue for the crease then fill it in red with the paint bucket.

And that's all! I hope you like your drawing, you can play with it a little; maybe add a design to the cloths. I'm finished so I'll move on to the next section. See you later!

Simple People II

Hello everyone! So here's my quick explanation for making a second simple people guide. (You have my permission to skip this) I was looking at a few screenie pages I came across on the help chat and noticed (to my sheer delight) that they had been made with my guide, specifically the simple people. As I scrolled down I noticed that all the poses where basically the same which is fine for beginning artists. But at the bottom of the page I found a award which led me to another screenie page with the same deal. All very simple poses, and guess what was at the bottom of that page? Yep, another award to a new page with the same looking characters. This is all well and good, it means this page is really getting around but I figure, you're better then that. You want to be original; here I'll give you the tools to do so!
(end rant)
First you'll need to read the first simple people guide.
Step 1) Grab your favorite person drawing and bring it into a new paint document with lots of room to work.
Step 2) Next to your favorite person, draw a simple stick figure of what you want them to do.

I know that before I told you to draw the legs last, and it is easer for correcting mistakes. Here I'm drawing the legs for simplicity, in the end you can draw in any order you want.
Step 1) Use the poloygon tool too make the legs.
Step 2) Fill in the legs with the proper colors, simple right?

Step 1) Draw the shirt and add color, maybe even sleeves. You already know how to do all this. (do you feel like your getting better?)

Step 1) Remove the stick figure now that you don't need it, draw the head and arms the way you like.

I'm a little sad that theres nothing new to tell you here. You already know how you like to customize your character and add details. Really, what else is there to learn?

Well that was disappointing, I was hoping to type more. Next I'll just show you a few different poses; you can figure them out on your own. But don't think you're off easy. After we're done posing our characters we'll start playing a little more with our style.

And I'm back! If you have a neatly posed character on your page then give yourself a nice pat on the back, shout 'TA-DA!' and save it. Now close your paint program and be prepared. I'm going to talk to you! (and by talk I mean type, not really the same but its the best I can do)

I know that when I go off on a rant I normally warn you so that you can skip it, nice of me right? Well this is the only rant I'm going to ask you to read, be patient, we'll get back to art in just a second.

Screenies should be funny, most of you are already really good at this. I just have a few tips for you.

Step 1) Your screenie, the actual page, is the set-up to your joke. Don't cover it up, put your characters below it, or off to the side on the right. You always want the viewer to see the screenie first.
Step 2) Less is more, your characters are the punch line. Don't draw it out too much.
Step 3) If people neomail you to tell you their favorite screenie take note, this will tell you what works, and what doesn't.

Like I said, most of you are already really good at this, you can always look up more hints later. (I can't name sites, but I highly suggest looking if your parents don't mind)

Another thing I've been needing to talk to you about is originality. Try to be different, that's what makes you stand out. Adding or changing little things can make a big difference. And that applies to more then just your art work, for example everyone has screenies the Book of Evil and pointed out pikachu's tail, try not to do that unless you can do it in a new, and interesting way.
This applies to your own page too, try not to keep telling the same joke over and over. For example I noticed one person where they where beating up a n00b in every single screenie. Funny once or twice, but after a while you get bored.

I'm almost done my rant now. In my section on 'new style' I have a little bit on character development. I ask you to copy and paste a blank 'person' into paint and make it look like the personality of a friend or pet. You might want to try it, just to get the basic idea.

Character development isn't really as important to the screenie as anything else I've taught you. But if you're going to be making a lot of screenies give your character some personality. What do they like or dislike? How do they react to different things? How do they feel about their petpet? Do they really want it to be eaten? Or are they just kidding? (Rio, my pteri, would cry if Boa was eaten, even if Rio acted like he hates Boa) These are just some things to think about. Now we will return to the art. Thank you so much for reading this one time!

Step 1) Re-open MS Paint, and find a drawing of your character. I'm going to teach you how to shadow.
Step 2) Add a red X above your character with the paint brush.

Step 1) Use the eye-dropper tool to pick out the shirt color. Now go up to the main tool bar, find colors (next to help) and click 'edit colors', then in that window click 'define custom colors'. I taught you how to do this in the tools section.
Step 2) Now on the right slide the color bar down and get a darker version of your color. Click okay and use the paint brush tool to paint this new color somewhere next to your drawing.
Step 3) do the same thing again for all of you main colors, like the pants or sleeves.

Step 1) Now use the eye dropper and suck-up the darker color for the shirt.
Step 2) Use the magnifying glass to zoom in on the shirt, about 6x. **Hint, the first time you click the 6x it will zoom in on the top right hand corner. This can be really annoying so zoom back out and click on the magnifying glass again, this should give you a box so you can see where you will zoom in.
Step 3) Use a super thin curved line and divide the shirt, try to stay inside the border lines.
Step 4) Fill in where you want the shadow; use the paint bucket.

They look pretty real now don't they? I love this, but it isn't always practical to go through all those steps for every screenie. But it would be very impressive to use if your pet was holding a flashlight, or talking to a light or fire fearie.

Heres the last thing I'm going to teach you, more clothing!
First I want you all to think about your character, in most cases you're drawing yourself right? (If not then just play along) Now stand up, walk over to your closet and find your favorite shirt, and bring it back here, but try to avoid words unless you don't mind leaving them off. Got that? That's step one, now go! *shoos away*

Done yet? Coolness! Lets see what you've got, most of you screenie-makers tend to be girls (sorry guys) so I'll have to show you how to do those new clingy shirts that show absolutely every curve of your bodies. Please fallow shirt style #1. And a few of you will even have tank tops and spaghetti straps! This particular style of art is kind of hard on those, so you'll have to fallow my school rules and have a extra-thick strap. You guys should fallow #2. And for every one else, a normal tee, nice and baggy, and we'll even cover long sleeves if you have any. You guys are #3. We'll get to the designs in a second; first we'll get the outline.

Step 1) Draw the head and body of a simple person, color it in gray.
Step 2) Find your group number and fallow your instructions.

*** Hints***
Use the middle line thickness for all steps.
Red lines are curved, and green lines are straight, sorry if your color blind. ^^

Lovly, looking back on that, I realized that I missed a step in the tank-top section. You can fingure it right?.
Now I know how you guys normally go about decorating this characters, and, at best, they look something like the fallowing:

Not that that's bad, you'll stand out, but... I have a better idea. Ready? Your shirt has a design right? Probably camouflage, flowers, or tie-die. Draw that first.
Step 1) Draw a design you would like on your shirt.
Step 2) Fill in your shirt with a random color, set the color as your background. (right click)
Step 3) Use the select tool to move your character over the design. Now the design is inside your lines, no mess!
Unfortunately it's much harder to shade this way, you'll have to decide which you prefer.

For the first girl's pink dress I copy and pasted a bunch of little white squares. Then I drew socks on because, well, socks are cool! For the camo, I spray panted in a few different shades of green. The tie-die was easy, you just draw a lot of little half-moon shapes with the thin curved line and then fill it in. And for the last guy I made a bunch of random lines, it makes his pants look a little more real.
Lastly, you can still shade this way. It's just harder. Look below to see how I did it. That's all for this section; I can't wait you see your new screenies!
p.s. Don't forget to take your award at the top of the page, its kind of big (my fault sorry) but it's also a roll-over!

Simple Pets

I understand that drawing pets is a lot harder then drawing people. Plus the neopets come in so many different shapes and colors that it would be impossible for me to show you every single one. In this section I will show you how to figure it out for your self. Isn't that kind of cool? That you could figure it out instead of asking? You can still ask but I might not have time, I have homework too.
Step 1) Open a new paint document and decide who you will draw, go to the rainbow pool and get a picture.
Step 2) You gat get rid of the black background with the paint bucket.
Step 3) Please try to chose a basic color pet (green, blue, red, yellow) these are easiest.

First we need to find the body shape of your pet and replicate it as best we can with the shape tools. Here are some pet types, dog/cat, fish, bird, or pillow. ^^ Pillow is my favorite. *Tip, you can use the select tool to move the circles into just the right spot.
Step 1) Look below and find what fits your pet best, think outside the box. Maybe korbat doesn't exactly fit any category but its close enough to bird.
Step 2) Like the last section the how-to will be in the table below.
Dog/Cat
Step 1) Start by drawing two circles, one for the front chest cavity and one for the hips. The hip circle should be a it smaller then the chest. Remember to hold down the shift key to will drawing to draw perfect circles.
Step 2) Next use the curvy line tool to outline the body, then you can erase the circles.
Step 3) Use the straight line tool for the front legs, and one curved line on the back leg (cats and dogs have a large knee) and again the rest of the leg can be made of straight lines. You can make the legs longer or shorter depending on the pet you are drawing.

Fish
Step 1) Start with drawing a circle for the head, remember to hold down the shift key.
Step 2) Add a curvy line to see where you wand the tail to go, for example the flotsam's tail curves up but the koi tail curves down.
Step 3) Two different curved lines make good fins, I made a flotsam fin in the picture but you can make any type of fin (like a kio, must add more fins on the tail)

Bird
Step 1) Use the circle tool, hold down shift, and draw two circles. You can use the select tool to move the smaller one on top but at a slight angle.
Step 2) Use the curvy line tool to make the body outline and then the wings too.
Step 3) I used the curved line to make feathers here but if you flipped the direction of the curve you could have a bat wing.

Pillow
Step 1) Use the circle tool, hold down shift, and draw two circles. You can use the select tool to move the smaller one on top.
Step 2) Now use the curvy line tool to make an outline.
Step 3) That's it really, real easy. That's why this one is my favorite.

That's just about it. The body is the hardest part. Now all we have to do is make a face.
Step 1) If your body doesn't have a head (lol) then draw a new circle and use he select tool to move it into place. With the dog/cat you might also want to use the curved line tool to make a neck.
Step 2) Draw the eyes like you would a person, with the paint brush. For some pets you can also draw the mouth right on, if not I'll show you a muzzle in a second.
Step 3) Below are some helpful how-to's but I can't do everything. Try to figure out a few things on your own.

Muzzle
Step 1) Make a straight line coming out from where you think the nose might be.
Step 2) Next use the curvy line tool to connect the line to the rest of the face, you can do this in one or two lines.
Step 3) Don't forget to erase any 'face' left in the muzzle and add a nose with the paint brush. You can make the muzzle longer of shorted depending on the pet.
Tail
Step 1) To see where the tail will go start with a thin coming out from the body and curve it as desired.
Step 2) Use the paint bucket to remove the inside line and decorate your tail.

Nose
Step 1) Starting with your head draw a curved line from the lower left of the circle to the lower right edge as you see in the picture.
Step 2) Draw the line up and around. Remember to adjust the 'starting' end of your line first and then the end.
Step 3) Get rid of any extra circle inside the nose area.

Fin
Step 1) Use your curvy line tool to draw a line down the center of the pets face (for kio, as shown) or down the back of your pets head (for flotsam, not shown)
Step 2) Use another curved line for to draw from the tip of the last line to the highest point on the fin, adjust line to curve outwards.
Step 3) For a dorsal fin (like the one on a dolphin) all you need to do next is have one more line that curves in. For a fish like the kio you might want two lines to make the fin floppy; and add a few smaller line inside to make the 'ribs' holding up the fin.

Beak
Step 1) Make one curved line from just left to the center of the face, to the far left, out side the face.
Step 2) Now draw another line from the tip of the beak down and back into the pet's face.
Step 3) Remove any left-over face from inside the beak with the paint bucket. Then use the paint brush with yellow and 'close' the beak. Now you can fill it in with color using the paint bucket.
Step 4) Add a smile or other whatever.

Arms
Step 1) Use the circle tool, hold down shift, and draw two circles. You can use the select tool to move them to just the right spots.
Step 2) Now use the curvy line tool to make an outline, connecting the sides of the circles to a common point on the body.
Step 3) Erase the bottom half of the circle, you finished! Ta-Da!

Antenna
Step 1) Use the polygon tool to make the antenna.
Step 2) Each Antenna is two polygons.
Step 3) Um… its really easy, just try it.

Ears
Step 1) One curved line for the inside edge on the ear, curved out at the bottom, than add another that meets the first one in a point.
Step 2) Now use the curvy line tool to draw a back to the ear.
Step 3) Use the straight line tool if you want to add hair to the inside of the ear...

And that's it! They may not be perfect, but with a little creativity and a little more work they could be your screenie character!

Welcome to guest's Screenies

You do have a screenie page don't you? I want you to step back and take a look at it. How does it look? Are the screenies centered, are they cropped, can you read the text? Here I will gift you a screenie page (background, border, title) and tell you how to change it to make it your own. You could go out and get a fancy pre-made page from sunnyneo or something, but I think it looks nicer if you make it your self.
Step 1) Get a black petpage to work with or your screenie page.
Step 2) Note that all my codes will go above your screenies, and if you have other codes on the page you should remove them for now.
Step 3) Decide if you want to read my little rant about screenie pages, there might be some info you find useful, but if you don't care I don't mind if you just move on.

Okay, here is my little rant for the day. We all make a first impression, that's normal even if it seems unfair. We also make first impressions about other people's pages and screenies. Only this can be a lot harsher because the people don't know you, and wouldn't feel bad if they just hit the 'back' button on their browser and leave. I want your page's first impression to be a good one. So please center your screenies and write neatly, it'll help you a lot in the long run.

Now I will give you all a page that I coded myself. I will admit that Rio's Screenies (my page) was never coded properly. That's because I don't like it. I'm going to replace my screenie page with a new one at some point. For now I'm just setting a bad example.
Step 1) Chose a color theme (from left to right) red, blue, or yellow.
Step 2) Copy and paste the code to the very top of your screenie page, or a blank page.
Step 3) Preview your page to see if it's the right one.

How to draw a Neo-Smiley

Smilies!! Lets face it, there is no better way to express your self then a good well done smiley. Now when I say 'Neo-Smiley' I mean a smiley that looks like your neopets. First you need MS Paint. We will start on a black page, then later you can copy and past it onto a screenie. What's nice about smilies is that you can save them, and us them over and over again!
Time for step one. Pick a basic color for your smiley, red, green, yellow, or blue. I wouldn't do fancy painted colors, you can figure those out for yourselves. Also you do not want to want to use black lines, it looks too harsh. Instead us a darker version of the color you are using.

Now for the fun, part the face !! Choose a emotion and figure out how to make it. I will do happy, sad, confused, and angry. You can see how I make mine to figure out how to make yours, or copy me until you understand the program better.
*Remember if you make a mistake go up to edit then undo.

And that's your basic neo-smiley! From here you can add ears or horns but is doesn't get much better. Or we could get really complex and make Super Neo-Smilies!!! But that's the next section *wink-wink*

BC Entries, and Other Impressive Art

You heard me right, I will new teach you art for the BC (beauty contest) but to be fair you can also use this for banners and lookups! (See my look up) Now if we want to really bring in the votes or high rating on the HC then we can use only MS Paint, don't worry I wouldn't make you spend money.
Step 1) Get some plain paper, a pencil.
Step 2) Open a paint document and resize it to the size you want your picture to be.
*** For those of you drawing a banner for (your screenie page) then you'll need to open a paint document to 400px width and 500px height (Image, Attributes)
Step 3) Take a piece of pager and lightly trace that white box onto the paper so you know that your drawing will fit.

Here's my explanation. This paragraph isn't to important so those of you with a short attention span can skip it. I saw someone asking for people to rate his art work on the HC, se was using my guide. The problem is you will always get a Farley low rating with just a simple person, they aren't good artwork material. This person seemed rather disheartened by it. This is the type of art people will respect; screenie art isn't supposed to be pretty, just funny.

Read this. Okay I'm back. First you will need to take the real paper and sketch the picture you want. Most of you are much better at drawing this way. For the rest of you, I give you my express permission to cheat but only if you promise not to enter it into the BC. You guys can go print out one of the coloring pages off neopets and find a picture of a pet that looks like yours.
** Need more inspiration? Try (www.neopets.com/ insert-your-pet-species-here) this might not work for all pets.
**Links for some coloring pages (you can always just trace the pet, the paint doesn't really matter)

TNT's How-To

Step 1) Lightly sketch out your drawing in pencil.
Step 2) Don't color in your paper please!

The next step is kind of tricky. We'll now convert our hand sketch into a computer sketch. There are a few ways to do this. I'll list them and you find out which works for you. Good luck!
Idea 1) Scan it into the computer? If you do this you may need to resize it depending on your scanner. I also strongly suggest you scan it in black and white if you can. You may lose some details but trust me, so will every one else. I don't know how your scanner works but after you've figured out how to open it into Paint you can move on to the next section.
If you think just scanning it will be easiest, then you're wrong, when you go to color in the image it will be all pixilated, so you can't use the paint bucket tool.

Idea 2) Yes I know not everyone has a scanner. Don't worry I prefer to work with out one. This idea works best on a laptop but you'll have to be very, very, very careful of the screen. Tap your drawing onto the computer, on Paint use the thick paintbrush in any color and do your best to trace the drawing through the paper. This is really hard and don't try to get it perfect, you'll just give yourself a headache.

Idea 3) If you don't have a scanner or a laptop then there's only one more way to go. The old-fashioned way! Don't freak out, you can do it; I'll have to go this way too for a proper guide. Place your drawing beside you on the desk, take the paintbrush (thick) and any color. My preference is blue or green because it'll calm you down when this gets frustrating. Now do your best to draw the picture by hand onto the computer. Yep that's it. I know it sucks and trust me I started over two or three times. If you have an artistically talented family member you are allowed to ask for a little help. It should look something like below.

Everyone ready? So, for anyone who used the scanner the hardest part is coming up. Everyone else should have it fairly easy, compared to that last step! Now we start our final copy. This is going to be a long and tedious process, that's why we only do this once for a banner or something. Don't be afraid to take a brake.

Step 1) Chose a color that is not already on your page. If you have all black and white use any color but black, white, and sometimes gray.
Step 2) Select the curved line tool, make sure your line thickness is at lest 2.
Step 3) Outline the whole drawing. Yeah….. Good luck.

Well, that was awful! At this point I'm guessing at lest 70% of you gave up and I don't blame you. Here's the best part, anyone who skimped in the beginning by using a scanner needs to…

Step 1) Erase any line that isn't your new outline. :P Yep… this is way I told you to scan in black and white. Use the paint bucket tool when you can.

I turned the background color blue so you could see, luckly only those of you who used a scanner will have it this bad. (each picture is about an hour)

Done yet? *taps foot and waits for scanner people to catch up* Good, off we go!

Step 1) Fill in the drawing with the paint bucket tool. (You can look up a picture of the pet and copy it into paint, then use the eye-dropper to get all your colors)
Step 2) Make a 'list' of the colors you used in the corner of your page. Just use the paint brush to make a mark in that color.
Step 3) Take each color from the list and find its shadow. (Huh? Don't worry its easy, plus it looks really professional) First select the color with your eye-dropper, then go to the top menu and find Colors, Edit Colors, Define Costume Colors and use the scrolling arrow tool. Then click okay.

Step 3, you can add the shadows. Anyone who read Simple People II already knows what to do. For everyone else, see below.

Step 1) Chose a color off your list to start with and use the eye dropper tool to get it's shadow.
Step 2) Zoom in on an area you think could use a shadow (hint draw an X of the page to decide where the light is coming from)
Step 3) Take the super thin line tool and separate the area that will have the shadow. (Look at the picture for a reference)
Step 4) Fill the spot in with the paint bucket.

Now you can either save your work and upload it, or add highlights and look really spiffy! (You can figure that out on your own) If you need to resize your picture for the BC here are some simple steps:

Step 1) Find Image in your top toolbar, then go down to Stretch/Skew.
Step 2) Take the Horizontal and Vertical percents down the same amount, about 20% each.
Step 3) Save as a .JPG or a .GIF, and submit it into the BC; I'll be looking for you!

SUPER Neo-Smilies

Okay, first you need a normal neo-smiley (see above section) got that? Good! Now you need a picture of the pet you want to make. Go to the rainbow pool and find the blue korbat picture and copy and paste it into the page. Fill the black background with white to make it easyer to see. You could do a different pet but I like the korbat to start. Once it is in the paint document you will use the pick color tool (eye drop) to get the proper colors from the korbat picture and then use the 'fill' tool (paint bucket) to change the color of the smiley to match the picture. Did I confuse you? Look at my helpful picture.

Because the korbat is white its okay to play with the colors a bit to make it a light shade of gray. Next we add ears. Use the curvy line tool. Remember to use colors from your picture. When you finish you could add fangs or a nose. Maybe you will get courageous and try to make a body.

And this is what happens to a korbat when you let it play Wheel of Monotony! Below are some other pets I did (for your inspiration). If you want you could neomail me and ask for how to make a neopet. I'll try my best to help.

How to draw a Good stick figure

Aw, the stick figure, the most basic of human shape. But honestly I see so many good screenie pages ruined with messy sticks flying all over the place! First some simple rules to go by.

#1) It doesn't matter how simple or complex your stick figure is, just don't keep changing it all the time or people will get confused.

#2) Colors are good, they keep things interesting, but too many bright colors will burn your viewers eyes out

#3) This applies more if you have two characters. They can be you, they can be a pet, but be careful of those long weird names like 'Hip_py872' or 'HI808MOM' you might want to give them nicknames like "Hippy" or "Rex".

Now use the line tool to make the stick part. But I want you to use a new color. Trust me, it'll help with the more complicated poses.

So, now that we have the basic skeleton we can build on to of that. I know, I know, its just a stick figure right? Well it'll be a much better stick figure if you give it at lest some dimension. In the words of my little brother's hero, Alton Brown, "Your patience will be rewarded"

Does this seem almost like a step backwards? It will unless you know what comes next.
1. Chose the lines that will be arms, legs, head, hands, and feet and fill them in black with your paint bucket. You can draw new lines if the originals don't add up just right.
2. Then fill in the lines shirt/other clothing. Don't use black.
3. And erase all those other lines by filling them in with white.

Almost done. Now fill in color where you need it, add a face and hair. Then stand back and admire your work.

That's much better then a plain old Bob right? Before you make this your character try out a few different versions and find the one that's easy enough to draw over and over again but complex enough that you wouldn't get board of it. Here is a whole team of stick figures, I did them for you to see and also because they are fun to do.

Random Objects

What good is the cutest characters and alluring art if you can't draw the simple stuff? The simpler the object the better it should look. People can't laugh at your screenies if they are busy trying to tell the difference from the cookie to the cookie plate. I wouldn't be explaining this section anymore then that. Practice using the tools and have some fun with the objects I give you. This can really improve the overall look of your screenies.

A different style of Neopets

I know you've seen this somewhere before. This is an easier style to draw neopets in so a lot of people already use it. I figure I'll teach you too. But I don't really like this style, it's a bit too much like a Japanese Manga rip-off. So if you are going to use it you should know that I will not take requests in this style, you'll have to figure it out. Also although I don't really like this style, if you do it right it can make some really funny screenies! I always say that funny screenies come before artsy screenies.

So like all my art you'll need to make a plan or skeleton before you draw the actual character. It'll be different depending what neopet you decide to make. Generally speaking you'll want a circle for the head, a line showing the length of the body, and any other lines you might need to keep things like whiskers the same length. I chose four neopet that I think look best in this style, look at them and if you want to do a different neopet you'll have to figure it out for yourself.

So just because I'm not really a fan of this type of art doesn't mean I don't like the screenies using it. As long as its funny and the characters are well developed you'll always have great screenies. A good way to have really realistic characters is to base them off of someone in really life. For example Trill, in my screenies is based off of me. Daisy, my only human character, is based off of my 7-year old neighbor who I baby-sit. After you've done that you'll want to work on showing personality through your art work.

Personality: somebody's set of characteristics

How do you show personality through artwork? Take a look at the picture below. I copy and pasted the same picture three times, by changing the colors and faces we can make three completely different characters.

This is probably the easiest exercise I will make you do. So please just try it? First open a new MS Paint. Then copy and paste the outline picture below into the page. Get three of these outlines lined up.

Now think of three people you know really well. Your parents, your friends, even your pets! Now what I want you to do is show the personalities of these people through the blanks I gave you. Are they smart, funny, artistic? Just do your best. Here are some items to help you out.

*Waiting for you to finish* Okay, how did you do? By looking at the people you made do you know who they are? Or what they are like? I love this type of art. I find it fun to draw what my pets would be like if they were human.

So that's my finished product. Don't copy it, you need to try your own. That is a picture of my goldfish, my brother, and my dog. My goldfish likes to clean (trust me its like and OCD goldfish), my brother loves cards, and my dog is old and loving like a grandmother. So you get the idea. Besides all that another good way to show personality is with the eyes.

Here are a few things to remember:

1. Simple black circles are the fastest and easiest type of eye, but they don't show a lot of emotion.
2. Eyes that are closer together make your character look silly or unintelligent (a.k.a stupid eyes). If you like your character looking silly then you should also try making one eye smaller then the other.

3. Using highlights of white spots makes eyes look softer and kinder the plain black eyes.
4. Adding multiple highlights can make the eyes look unfocused and baby-like.

5. Very detailed eyes with color and highlight are harder to make and take longer, but they show a lot of emotion and look really nice.
6. The best compromise might be to make the eyes more detailed when the character is closer and bigger, and then use the simple black eyes when they are father away.

I had a lot of fun making that last picture. Also if you want to go with the more detailed eyes here are some examples from my requests. You will probably want simpler eyes then this but they might give you some good ideas.

The last thing you'll need are hands for your character. Hands let you grab stuff, eat stuff, throw stuff, and hug stuff. Arms are less important to me. In fact you can probably make your characters without any arms at all. Lets see how it looks…

Ta-Da! I like it. So to make the hands just use some curvy lines, you can figure it out. I can't wait to see what you make!

How to draw a Human

Same basic rules as the stick figure so read the opening to that to okay? Alrighty then, lets jump right in!

Here is where I go crazy. I so want to explain the autonomy of the human being saying that your drawing will look horrid if you don't study tonight, but I know you really don't want to spend hours on this! Grrr, that art teacher of mine is rubbing off. So I will only touch on the lightest details. You may skip the rant and just copy the picture. But you will see some funny extra lines, you can ignore those if you want or just add them in, which ever floats your boat.
(RANT) What I want to say is that humans have proportion. And so do good stick figures. The only difference being that the stick figure has a bigger head to emphasize on emotions. So if you want a super stick first draw it with a normal head and the draw the body like this:
Line for neck is about 1/3 size of head, just eyeball it
Line for shoulder is about as long as two heads widths
Line for torso (chest and main body) two head lengths
Line for hip is slightly smaller then the shoulder line in boys and about the same in girls
Lines for the legs (in adults not munchkins) is the same length as the bottom of the hips up to the top of the head.
Lines for the arms should end past the hips you can standup and check if you think they look too long.
See my picture to see what I mean, I labeled it. (/RANT)

I know what you are thinking. Well, no I don't, but I can guess. It probably has something to do with this being way too complicated to do over and over again for ever single screenie you do. Well, if that is what you were thinking, then you are right. What we have here is a model. Just like I said back in stick figure land, you what all your humans to look similar so readers can easily recognize the character. This is especially important if you what to be able to do cross-over (letting another artist use your characters for a screenie). Anyways it'll also help keep your proportions in line.

So without further ado lets on to the next step. On the same page as the model draw a new circle, about the same size and far enough away that your pictures wouldn't be bumping into each other. Then get out your handy line tool, it'll be the most important tool for this.

Now we get funky. Keeping proportions in mind, we make a rough body shape. I like making everything sorta triangular. Make all the pieces different colors, that way later when we want to eras lines all we have to do id use the fill bucket and not have to worry about the other lines. I start with another quick sketch of the stick figure, but without all the measuring and trying to make it just right. Then build on top of that.

So now that is looks like we've made a good mess of the paper, it time to clean it up! Change your color back to black and make a good detailed outline. Or use some of the lines you already drew by filling them in black with the paint bucket. Add wrinkles in the clothing where the joints bend and out line the shoes nicely. Then use the paint bucket to get rid of all those other lines.

Now we're getting somewhere!! Add some hair, face, designs, and color her (or him, mine is a her) and stand back to admire your work. You can even yell 'TA-DA!' if you want to. That's what I do :)

Requests! (Closed due to high school drama)

Kougra
Poogle
Baby Poogle
Fearie Xweetok
Shoyru
Koi
Kau
Bori
Eyrie
Chrismas Shoyru

This is my first request! Woot! How to draw a kougra in MS paint. Skip to Next Request?
I will not be explaining this section as much so you might want to read the smiley section first. Now get a picture of a blue kougra from the rainbow pool and paste it into MS paint.

I am currently unsure why the background on the picture from the rainbow pool is black, but it is. You can get rid of it with the paint bucket if it bugs you.

Use the eyedropper tool to get the shadow color. Use it as your outline when you use the circle tool. Fill it with the highlight color from the picture.

To make the ears use the circle tool with the ultra-thick line. Layer two circles on top of each other as shown(in next picture down). Then use the paintbrush to thin it out and take that well-know bit out of the ear (only make one)

Now move the head circle on top of the ear. And have any colors you want for the face handy.

Now draw the face, use shape tools as often as possible and use the real colors from the picture. Only draw one half the face, you'll see why in a second

Heres the hard part. Remember how you moved the circle back in the beginning? Use that tool on the half of the face you finished, and only that half. Copy and past it. Now we are going to flip the image. Go up to Image, then down to Flip/Rotate, click. In the window that comes up select Flip horizontal. Finally move the flipped image on top of blank part of the face.

TA-DA! If you got all that done then give yourself a pat on the back. You now have a kougra face! But the request was for the whole thing, so moving on. First I used the rounded-square tool to make the front paws. Connected them with some curvy lines, and used the normal line tool for some toes.

I think you can figure this one out.

Start adding those fun details like stripes.

Almost there! Now make a tail out of curvy lines.

Add any final touches and your all done! Don't forget to delete the original picture.

Welcome back! Time for my second request, a silver poogle! Skip this one? If you have done neopets my way before you know the drill by now. First get a picture of the pet you want from the rainbow pool. Second, make all the colors you'll need handy. Use the eyedropper tool to get the colors and use the paintbrush on the side of the page. You will need a color for his face, shadow, and highlight color.

Now, using a different color, make his ears. Use curvy lines so it looks more natural.

Good! See how the poogle's ear has two parts? A inside and a out side? You can make this by dividing the ear with a super tine curvy line in the shadow color. Fill the top half with the normal color. The shadow color is too dark so go to Colors, the edit color, define custom colors, and well, you can figure it out.

Fill in the blue line with the right color. You had it blue in the first place so you could delete it easier if you messed up. Then go into the neopet's picture and get the color for his stripes. Draw them on using the curvy line tool. Make them small and leave lots of room for the face!

Do you like smiles? Think of your favorite and give your poogle that emotion. The only differences should be they way you make the eyes and nose. Poogles are really cute so give it big black eyes, then use the paintbrush to give it some white sparkles. Then the nose is really just a big upside down U in the shadow color.

*Group Awww!* You see? This works! Now for the body. I like to make it beside the face and then move the face on top. Once again this just makes things easier if you make a mistake. Start with an oval that's just longer then the head.

Now the leg, I really don't know how to explain this one so I'll just show you by making each line a new color. (by the way there are two ways to do this one. You pick which you like.
1-It'll look like a normal pet who stands on four legs.
2-He'll like more people like and stand up.

Now we want another foot that is exactly like the other. I don't know how many of you read the requested kougra section, but it explains how to bake things symmetrical. I'll explain again.
Skip this if you know how
But this time with fewer pictures. Step one, use the doted-line box tool to select what you want to copy, in this case the foot. That's the tool in the top right hand corner. Once you have the foot and leg in the box go up to edit in the tool bar. Then down to copy and paste a second foot. Then (making sure it is still in the box) go up to Image, then to Flip/Rotate then select flip horizontal, finally, click ok. Now you try.

This step is a lot simpler. Make the legs and feet look like legs and feet. This means getting rid of some lines, filling color, and getting all remaining line the right color.

Finally we can finish it off. For those of you trying poogle #1, copy and paste a second poogle body. Place the new body in front of the old one. If you are trying poogle #2 you need to draw arms, do this the same way you did the legs. Both #1 and #2 need to add a belly. Use colors from the picture.
Poogle #2 might also need a longer belly do this with the tool that you used to copy and paste. Select the top of the belly and move it up a few pixels, then re-connect the lines with the line tool.

Almost done!! Now add stripes, a tail, some color. Lastly, put the head where it belongs, on the body!

Play with the picture a bit. When you have it just right throw your arms in the air and scream TA-DA!

Hello again! Time for my third request, a baby poogle! Skip this one?You guys sure like your poogles. Okay, this one is going to be really similar to the silver poogle here.
You will be doing all the same things. So instead of going step by step, I'll show you how to take the original steps and adjust them to baby.
The first thing we always do is get a picture of a baby poogle from the rainbow pool and use the eyedropper tool to get all the original colors.

Next make the ears using the curvy lines. Make them in a new color. Also make them as large as possible without making your baby look like Jumbo the elephant.

It doesn't really look like a poogle yet dose it? Contine with the same steps as last time to make the ears look like ears. 1. Use a super thin line to divide the ears. 2. Fill color, you can play with the color a bit by going to up to the tool bar, selecting color, and edit colors. 3. Fix your lines.

Now what will really make your baby look cute and cuddly… great big baby eyes! First zoom in to 6x using the magnifying glass. Using a super tine line make two ovals and fill them in white.

I used a curvy line to make the pupil, and then filled it in black. Use another tine line to define the iris and fill that in blue. Finally add some white sparkle with the paint brush.

Isn't that cute?! Next add the nose, a large backwards down C, and a mouth if you want one.

Time to make the body. Because babies can't do to much anyways instead of more complicated body we can do something really simple. Start with a small rounded square.

All we have to do now is make this look like a poogle body! Trust me, its easyer then it sounds. Make a Y shape in the front and a backwards C in the back. Like this:

Make your lines the same color as the rest of your drawing. Then add a tail (a curvy line) some strips, and a cute white belly.

Finally move head onto the body. You know how to do that right? Then delete the original image and your done! Here is a reminder how to move images :

Time for another request! *panting* Holy cow you guys this one was a hard one. Now I shall attempt a Fearie Xweetok! Skip this request? Now go get a picture from the rainbow pool and get a picture of the fearie xweetok. Now because when you copy and past the picture the background turns black you might not be able to see all the details you would like. So you might want to screenie the picture. If you don't know how you can learn how to make a screenie click here.

Now do the usual. Use the eyedropper tool to get the original colors from the picture. Use a shadow color and a highlight color from the original image and make a circle for the head.

The ears? To tell the truth it took me a few tries to get this right. Use the curvy line tool as best you can. In the picture I used a different color for all the different lines I used. Sorry I can't explain any better then that, good luck.

Finish the ears off with the correct colors right from the original picture. Use a supper thin line for inside the ears.

The eyes will really help bring this picture to life! Us a super thin line for all of this. And then finish it off by painting in some white sparkle. Make sure the eye is low enough on the face to leave room for the hair.

TA-DA! Just move that right in there. Wait! You do know how to move stuff right? Here's a little reminder. I love this image.

Using that tool copy your eye and paste a second one in. Then squish it a little to make it thinner. Then flip it and put it back on the face. Cool right. Please refer to the picture below.

It's really not as hard as it looks. Use the paint brush to draw on the strips above eyes and to draw in the nose. Add some highlight to the nose with lighter colors. Is it starting to look better?

Good job! If you've gotten this far then give yourself a pat on the back. Good. Get out your curvy line tool and start on the Xweetok's mane. Again I used different colors for each line. It doesn't have to look just like mine, mine is more like a guide.

Fill color, and use the colors from the original picture to make it really look like hair.

Time for the body. Normally I would draw it septet from the face but this time it will be easier to just draw it together. Use one long curvy line and a circle that will later be the back leg.

Lovely job. My physic powers tell me you are doing very well. Use the rounded square tool to make some toes for the feet of your xweetok. Then use some curvy lines to make legs.

Clean it up a bit and fill color. Next start on the mane again. You know what your doing, really. Your better then you thinks you are.

Time to start the finishing touches. Use curvy lines on the tail, wings, and antenna. Remember use real colors from the original image.

Finished yet? Polish it up and make it shine. Because this was such a hard request please tell me how you did if you tried this one. I would love to know how I can improve and make things easier for you.

Time for a blue Shoyru! Skip this one?I love shoryus, there so cute! So lets jump right in. First you need a picture of a blue shoryu from the rainbow pool. When you have it you need the main colors from the picture for your image.

Draw a circle with these colors. This will be the head. Here's something cool, if you hold down the shift key while drawing the circle it will always be perfectly round. Use a curvy line to give your shoryu a nice big nose.

Fill in the right colors and erase the extra line between the head and nose. Then use the curvy line tool again to make the fin on top of the shoryu's head.

Fix it up with the paint bucket. Now add an eye. Use a super tine lines for all of these steps. Remember you can get the eye color right out of the rainbow pool picture.

Give your picture a smile and add a shadow above the nose to make it pop. You can make a color for the shadow by selecting (eye dropper) the normal fill color of your shoryu going up to the top tool bar and selecting color, edit color, and then define custom colors.

Time for the body. Make a nice circle where you think the belly should be. Then connect it with some curvy lines. When you get to drawing the feet you should really put in a floor line that you can erase latter with the paint bucket. This will keep your feet even.

The feet will just be two circles. Then we will use some curvy lines to connect them. Remember when you go to fill them in that they are a slightly different color from the rest of the shoryu. Use the eye dropper tool to get the right color.

Add some mitten-style hands made of curvy lines. Then add a tail the same way. Its starting to look like a shoryu to me!

It took me a while to come up with a simple but appealing way to do the wings. It was easier then I expected. Just use all curvy lines for the wings and then a triangle on top of super thin lines for the horn.

Ta-Da! That's it! You're finished and ready to go! Don't forget to link to me on your way out.

Its starting to feel like every time I finish a request I get a new one! I'm not complaining. Its cool that so many people love art. This request is for a blue koi. Go get a picture of a koi from the rainbow pool and copy and past it into paint. You can get rid of the black background with the paint can. Get the colors for the highlight and shadow from the real picture using the eye dropper tool. Use them to make the first circle. *Hint, holding down shift while drawing a circle will keep the circle perfectly round.

I know normally we draw the face first and the body last but in this case its best to go in the reverse order. First we will make this into the body with some curvy lines.

It kinda looks like a tadpole or bird beak *squinting eyes and tilting head*. Any who to make it look more koi-link add a dorsal fin along the back. Use curvy lines and a slightly thinner line. When go to fill in the line color with the right color use a darker shade of the fin color. Don't know how? Refer to my hand picture.

You can make the fin look more real by adding some long thin lines and a highlighted area. I drew the highlighted area with a super thin straight line, you can draw it however you want. You can get the colors with the eyedropper tool from the original picture.

Now for the eyes. Use a super thin line for all of these steps.

Once you've gotten that sorted out we can start on the face. Make a nose using a super thin curvy line to make a big upside-down U. Use the same color you used for the same lines in the fin. Then add a smile! (Or a frown, smirk, gasp, whatever, it's your picture)

I think this should be the second to last step (We're that close!) us your pencil or paintbrush to draw the dark spot an freckles onto your koi. Use your paint can to fill it in.

And the last step is *drum roll* Fins! Just make the last three the same way you mad the first one. Slightly thinner line, curves, fill, lines, and highlight. Please refer to the picture below for further instructions.

Wait a second! If that was the last step then why am I still talking? Well here is where I like to stop but you might want to keep going. On the original picture the koi all have catfish-like whiskers on their head. If you want to draw them then you need to get a super thin curvy line and make the whisker shape. This line should be slightly darker then the fill color of the whisker. Then you can fill the whisker in with the paint bucket. If you chose not to do this then I would continue the freckle pattern all the way down the side of the koi.

I am back from vacation! The first request on my waiting list is a Rainbow Kau. Right, so the first think you need to do is go get the original picture of a blue kau. Skip this request? It will become rainbow later, but it's easier to start blue. Then use the eyedropper tool to get out all the colors we'll need. You'll need the shadow color and the highlight color to start. Once you have all that, draw a circle.

Now using a curvy lines in a different color make a nose for your kau. This may take a few trys.

Now using a curvy lines in a different color make a nose for your kau. This may take a few trys.
Then use the colors from the original picture to make the nose look like a nose. Use thinner lines then before. If you add nostrils don't use black, it'll look too harsh. Instead use a darker shade of blue.

Time for an eye. By the way you don't need to fallow any of these steps exactly, if you just want a plain black eye then go for it. For my steps use a super thin line.

Add strips with curvy lines or a paint brush; you know which works best for you. Then add horns. Make the outline first using curvy lines, then fill it in with the paint can. If you feel extra creative then add some light gray shadows on the bottom of the horns. You don't have to but it looks nice.

To finish off the head the kau will need a dollop of hair and two big floppy ears. Make an outline out of thin curvy lines and fill it in with colors from the original picture.

So now you have a head! I don't know how many of you have been near cows in real life, my uncle owns a dairy farm. So trust me when I say cows are really square shaped. Therefore to make the body we'll start with a rounded square. Then add legs as shown.

The last thing you need to do is add strips on the back and legs. And add a tail with some fluff if you want to. Then move the head onto the body. And that's a blue kau! We'll make it rainbow in a second.

The last thing you need to do is add strips on the back and legs. And add a tail with some fluff if you want to. Make the tail the same way we made the hair on the head. Then move the head onto the body. And that's a blue kau! We'll make it rainbow in a second.

Time to make your kau rainbow. First go back to the rainbow pool and replace your blue kau picture with a rainbow kau picture.
So now all we need to do is change the color of the kau to make it rainbow. Use the eye dropper tool to get the correct color from the original picture and use the paint bucket to fill it in. If the color changes inside the kau (for example the body changes from yellow to green to blue) use a thin curvy line to cut up the kau.

I was tempted to just leave it at this point but I bet if you put all the time into making the kau you will want it to be the best. So the finish it off use the paintbrush tool and brake up all the lines. Then you can make the line colors match the color inside the kau.

This will be my last request for a while. I wish I had more time but collage is coming up and, well, I just don't have time to screenie anymore. But you do! This is going to be a bori! Skip this request? I love bori, but they are a bit harder to draw. I shall start by getting a picture of one from the rainbow pool and eye dropping out all the colors I will need.

Now we can make a head for our bori. Use the circle tool for the head and remember to hold down the shift key. Add ears and a nose with the curvy line tool. Remember that you can adjust the line twice before it sticks for good.

Remember that it's the little details that count here. You want to zoom in and with a pencil tool divide the line like you see on the left ear. Then you can go in with the paint bucket and fill the tip of the ear with any color you want. The rest of the face you can do with the paint brush.
Ever wonder why I paint the whole eye and then take a piece out of it with white? People do that because any living thing has wet eyes that reflect light. When you make a piece of eye white people thing of your drawing and 'alive' not just 'art'.

People say a picture says a thousand words. All that picture says it "use curvy line tool" Lets see if the next picture is more informative.

I don't think I'll be winning any academy awards for "best picture". I get a few comments on these step so please remember that I have been practicing for a long time, you picture will not come out perfect the first time. If I could make your picture perfect I would but all I can do is tell you to practice. I promise that if you don't get better with a little practice I'll eat my computer mouse.

Of course I use a laptop and there for don't have a computer mouse but…. Here we use the polygon tool. It's not a tool I use often but it gets the job done. You just click and drag and when you deselect the polygon tool in automatically closes the shape.

I think you can figure that part out yourself. I think I'm done here. You can add the green stripes with your paintbrush but then your pretty much done. Happy Holidays.

Requested Eyrie

Here's a new request, an eyrie. Skip this request? Eryies are fairly difficult because of all the detail in their face and wings but I have a few new tricks to help!
Step 1) Start by getting and eyrie picture from the rainbow pool, this way we can get just the right colors. Then draw a nice big head using the circle tool and holding down the shift key. I would use the third thickest line.
Step 2) Use the curvy line to start on the feathers on the eyrie's head. Remember that when you draw a curvy line you need to adjust the starting point of the line first.

Step 3) Remember to use different colors, that way when you need to erase lines you can just click on them with the paint bucket.
Step 4) Continue to work on the feathers with the line tools. And use a thin line to separate colors on the face.

Step 5) Add a beak. This took me… um… three tries, to get it all just right.

Step 6) Add a eye. I used two really thin lines to make an outline, and drew the eye with the paint brush.
Step 7) Color! Use the eye drop tool to get all the right colors and fill in the head, next we will draw the body.

Step 8) Draw two circles and use the select tool to move the bigger one to the bottom, this will become the body.
Step 9) We will move the head over later, for now if we make a mistake the head is safe over by itself, you can also use just the head in your screenies if you don't want to draw the whole thing!

Step 10) Now to make that thing look like a peanut. Use the curved line tool to give it shape.
Step 11) Now we make the peanut a body, get rid of the extra lines inside with the paint bucket.

Step 12) Draw the back and front paws. Here I drew the curved lines in green and the straight one in red, so you could see the difference.
Step 13) Attach the paws to the legs when your finished.

Step 14) Use the curvy line tool to make the furry lion mane.

Step 15) Start on the wing with one big curved line.
Step 16) Separate the two colors that you will add later with one thin line.
Step 17) Use the paint brush tool to make the feathered edge.

Step 18) Time for the tail, draw two curvy lines out to where you think the tail should end.
Step 19) Use the paint brush to draw a tip to the tail.

Step 20) Fill with color using the paint bucket then use select to move the head back on!

Chrismas Shoyru

Time for a Chrismas Shoyru! I know I already did one shoyru, but I thought this would be a good chance to mix it up a bit. I know that the first thing I always tell you to do is go to the rainbow pool and ask you to copy the picture of the pet your working on Well this time lets try something diffrent. Lets draw the unconverted christmas shoyru! Yes, this is good.
Step 1) Open a new paint documant, that was easy.
Step 2) Click here and find the UC Chrismas Shoyru, copy and paste him into MS Paint.
Step 3) Click here and get the new Chrismas Shoyru, because I want to draw my pet with his eye open, copy and paste him into MS Paint.
Step 4) Now we can start! First select the line tool and change the line thickness to the third down. Then use the circle tool while holding down the shift key and draw a head, about the size of a coin.
Step 5) Use the curved line tool, with the same thickness, to draw a nose, do this in a diffrent color.
Step 6) Wow, this is a lot of steps! Use the paint bucket to get rid of the extra line inside the nose.

That was a lot of steps to give you all at once! I'll go slower from now on.
Step 7) Go to the curved line tool and make the line one step smaller. Then make an arch for the eye.
Step 8) Make a second arch under the eye, this is a happy mark. When you smile a little bit of your cheek is pushed up.
Step 9) Use the eye dropper tool to get the right color for the eye, get it from the new picture where the shoyru's eye is open. Then use the paintbrush to make the eye color. Add a black pupil and a white spot when you finish.

Step 10) Fill the face with the same color as the real picute, use the eye dropper tool.
Step 11) Draw a smile with cured lines, fill it in when you finish.

Now we will draw the body. For anyone new to my requests this will seem odd, but I always draw the body separate from the head. It's easier to fix mistakes this way. Don't worry, we will put the head back on later.
Step 12) Draw a belly for the shoyur, slightly bigger then the head, make sure you are using the same line thickness as the head.
Step 13) In a diffrent color, draw two straight lines comeing up and together, later this is where we will put the head.

Now the drawing will start to look weird, I'm warning you now. My teacher calls it the "awkward stage" and tells us to just work through it. I promise it will look good in the end.
Step 14) Add one curved line for the bottom of the legs. Do this in a new color.
Step 15) Two more lines for the top of the legs.
Step 16) Clean it up and take out the exra lines from the circle.

The "floor" line is optional, I draw one to help me keep the feet straight. Then I erase it later with the paint bucket.
Step 17) Now we can start on the boots. Draw the top curved line in a new color, then the bottom. The boots are kinda pointy and round at the back.
Step 18) Use the paint brush to draw in the fuzzy white boarder on the shoes and across the belly. I drew a yellow line across the belly first as a guide but you don't need it.

You can fill it in with color now or wait till later. I used the paintbrush on the shoes to make them shiny. And remeber to close the gap at the top with the paint brush or pencil.
Step ...um 19) Yeah thats right, okay lets start on the arms! Use curved line tool to add arms, but don't attach them to the body yet. THis just makes it easyer to move them around. See if you look at the origanal picture the left arm is behind the head, and the right arm is in frount. How dowe do this? I'll tell you later. For now just draw the right arm farther away from the body.
Step 20) Yes I know this is a lot of steps, just add the fuzzy with your paint brush. Then add color from the picture, use the eye drop tool.

Time to bring it all together! If you didn't read the tool's section here is a quick how-to for the select tool:
The select too is the doted line tool in the upper left hand corner of the tool box. Use it to draw a box around what you want to move. Make sure that your background color is white, change your background color by right-clicking a color from your color palate. Then switch the options on the select tool to let you see through the background color. The options are under your tool box, you want the second option highlighted. Then move whatever you selected by clicking on it and dragging to where ever. You can now move stuff, Ta-Da!!
Step 21) Use the paint brush tool to draw some fluff around the head.
Step 22) Move the head onto the body.
Step 23) use your paint brush to connect the hood to the fuzzy on the belt, and use the paint can to remove any extra color.
NOw do the same thing to the arm, you can use the line tool to conect it or use the paint bucket to erase extra lines. Oh, that was step... um... 23.
Now we are done to the detail work.
Step 24)Make a hat out of curved lines and add a fuzzy ball to the end, you can use the paint can for this. I layered some light gray and dark gray on the medium setting then used the smallest spray to turn the inside white. Or you could just use the paint brush, whatever.
Step 25) Same thing, draw a tail and fill it in. Good luck, the fate of the world lies on your shoulders... (lolz)

Make a hat out of curved lines and add a fuzzy ball to the end, you can use the paint can for this. I layered some light gray and dark gray on the medium setting then used the smallest spray to turn the inside white. Or you could just use the paint brush, whatever.
Step 26) Darw a wing, only one. I think the picture is good enough explanation.

Now to make two wings,
Step 27... I think) Use the select tool on the wing, once you have it go up to the task bar on the top of the page. Select Image, the go to Flip/Rotate or Ctrl+R. Good, now select the first option in the little box that pops up.
Step 28) Now that you know how, make a second wing, copy and paste the first, and flip it. ^^ I know, I should have told you that first, but I forgot. Sue me.

Ta-Da! Now just move your little Shoyru onto his new wings. You know how to do this. You might have to go back and fix up the details. It looks great, I'ed say we where done!
This picute is my practice picture, I always draw one first before makeing the guide. He's cute isn't he?

Ads, Awards, and Links

Screenie pages are not known for their amazing coding. But there are two things you should know how to do. One, make a picture or button link. This could be a picture ad for your screenies that other people will put on their pages. Or it could be an award you have given to someone. When a person clicks on it, it will link them to your page. And two, a text box under the link or award so people can take the link/award. You might want to hide awards on different pages so no one can steal them, but I've never had any trouble. This will really set you apart from the competition.
Step one. Get a picture of your character and edit in any inviting text. It should be small, no bigger then a flashcard.

Step two. Get it online_ I would like to assume you know how to do this already.
Step three. Put it in a hyperlink. I put the code in this handy box incase you don't know how. Copy and paste it into you page. Replace my url with the url of your screenie page. Replace the picture code with the direct link to your picture. I wish I could have just given you the emty codes but TNT filtered it, sorry!

Now to make a text box so people can put this code on their pages. The easiest way to share this is the same way I made the code for you. But due to technical reasons I can't put the box code in a box. You will just have to copy it from the picture. Due to gliths you will have to settle for a picture of the code.
Be very careful to always close this code properly. If you don't it will 'eat' everything that appears after it on the web page. But now your finished!
