RAURIKI
❝The Will-o'-the-Wisp is out on the marsh,
And all alone he goes;
There's not a sight of his glimmering light
From break of day to close;
But all night long, from dusk till dawn,
He drifts where the night wind blows. ❞
The Will-o'-the-Wisp, by Annie Campbell Huestis
Into the Forest
Mysterious forest beings hum an eerie tune as you trudge slowly through the dark wood. A thick canopy of leaves hides the moon from view, leaving you with absolutely no light whatsoever. Except...
Up ahead, about a hundred or so yards, you would estimate, floats a brightly shining, pulsing sphere of luminous white. Drawn to its scintillating beam, your footsteps grow harried and uneven as you struggle to reach the inexplicable waxen orb.
But the closer you get, the farther the light seems to be. Unable to process this notion and too tired and hungry to even try, you keep on running ahead. After what feels like an eternity, the light appears to be closer. You allow yourself a tiny smile before running to it in a full-on sprint.
Thud, thud, thud, goes your heavy feet on the soft forest bed. Faster and faster they move, until you're wondering why you never tried out for track at school if you were this speedy.
But you're going too fast, and although you see the suspicious blob of shiny black up ahead, you're unable to stop or steer around it.
Instead, the next step you take plunges you straight into a deep, filthy bog. The white light dances above you, inches away. And finally you can see the little blue creature next to it.
All you get is one glimpse, though, before it pushes you down and drowns the life out of you for good.
Rory, the Will-o'-the-Wisp
A will-o'-the-wisp is a funny sort of creature, also known by several different names, among which are hinkypunk and jack-o'-lantern. It is a small, rodent-like creature possessing a bright ball of light which is visible to travelers when the night is dark. Humans will instinctively follow the light, which recedes as they advance, until finally the light leads them into a trap, which could be a swamp or a pit. Something that ensures their death so they will be calm when consumed.
Rory has a deep blue coat with a long stripe down his back and tail. His ears are very sensitive, especially with the little curls at the tip - in fact, they are far more useful than his eyes. In this way, he is quite similar to a bat. Rory uses his keen hearing to identify humans within a five-mile radius of his current place. Then, holding aloft his orb of light, he travels close enough to the human to lead him into certain death. Rory's preferred method of killing is drowning.
Future Plans
Rory would have...
A petpage. I would probably use this layout. His petpage would include artsy stuff and a little story, probably.
A pet-lookup. I'm trying to get back in the hang of coding, so after I can code a decent pet-lookup I'll give Rory one. I'd probably use a premade until then.
A petpet (and possibly petpetpet?) Rory will get a lovely little Psimouse and maybe a small critter to accompany said Psimouse.
Perpetual booking at the Neolodge. So he doesn't starve and stuff, that would be unhealthy.
Why Rauriki?
A day or two ago I got bored and decided to draw. The end result was this:
Well, I kind of liked that little doodle, so I started looking around at the different kinds of pets to see if there was anything that resembled it. I wasn't consciously planning on making it into a Neopet or anything, but then I found the Faerie Meerca and it was absolutely perfect for everything I had in mind.
So I went to Neopound to see if there were any Faerie Meercas up for adoption, and lo and behold, there Rory was! So I immediately neomailed you with an inquiry about your squirrel and you replied yes, I can apply, and so I did.
Anyways, I guess that's it. Oh, and I was originally intending the doodle to become a female character but after seeing Rauriki and nicknaming him Rory he just seemed more...uh...male. Yupyup.
About the Applicant
Hullo, Naomi. I suppose you might wish to know a little bit about your applicant, seeing how I am applying for your Faerie Meerca and all.
Well, I'm pretty awful at this stuff, but here goes.
I go by Flinkle on the Internet, and Neopets is an on-off hobby of mine. During the summer is when I'm most involved with it, since school isn't there to distract me from my beloved pixels.
I'm currently majorly downsizing (actually, I was about to quit but decided not to) after recently returning from a very long hiatus. This is my excuse for having a very empty-looking account (and a lack of character for pets).
Anyhoo, I'm just getting back into Neopets right now, so I haven't been on the boards much except to advertise for my supercool-UFA-pets. Normally on Neopets, I'm either working on my pets (characters, art, that sort of thing), Habitarium-ing, or chatting on the Pound Chat. Fascinating, I know.
I have five accounts:
hubbub /
narwhool /
flinkle /
bloohargen /
mysticmilk
They're listed in order of activeness, more or less.
hubbub is my main account and the rest are sides. Rauriki would likely go on either
narwhool or
flinkle.
Offline, I enjoy drawing, reading, writing, running, and swimming. My writing skills are questionable. I like to watch Pokemon (at least the first few seasons) and eat Nutella. I hope to be a graphic or web designer, but I'll have to improve a lot before I can consider either those as a career choice.
I've always wanted a puppy. But my parents disapprove of warm-blooded, furry pets. /sadface
Fare thee well
Thank you very much for taking the time to read my application. I hope I didn't bore you too much or anything, and I also hope Rory goes to a loving home!
