1. Spell Check

You need to be sure that you proofread all e-mails, texts, Facebook posts, or any documents before you send them. Because if you don't it can get you in trouble and destroy the credibility of your work. If you type a word that is very similar to another word, your computer might accidentally change the word without you knowing it. So always make sure you proofread everything that you write or type because you might accidentally cause a serious misunderstanding.

2. No All caps

Never use all caps when writing a message. Using all caps is when you press the caps lock button on your keyboard and don't turn it off when writing a message. (For those of you who might not know what using all caps means.) Remember what you learned in school. Capital letters are used only at the beginning of a sentence or when naming a person, place, or thing. If you use all caps when you write a post or text, people will think that you are shouting and/or angry. This is considered very rude and people will not want to associate with you. Another problem we are facing today is people who constantly chatspeak. Chatspeak is very annoying, rude, and often hard to understand. Dn't tlk lik dis @ al. (Obviously, I don't understand or know how to use chatspeak.) However there are exceptions to using chatspeak. Sometimes it is called shorthand and can be used when you are taking notes in your high school, or (in my case) college classes.

3. tell the truth

Obviously you should always tell the truth, no matter what you are doing. Like they say, "Honesty is the best policy". Of course on Neopets you can pretend and exaggerate a little. Because no one really knows who you are and this is all just a game, but when it comes to things like Facebook or the internet in general you shouldn't lie about yourself. Because you never know who might see it. Now I don't mean that you should give out all your personal information to anyone who asks. For example, you should not say that you are 21 when you are only 16 or tell everyone that you are rich and live in a mansion when you really don't. If someone asks for your full name, your address, or about your personal life, just tell them that you prefer not to give out your information and if necessary, report them.

4. be yourself

It is important to protect your image online and off. If you do or say things that might destroy your image people will not want to interact with you at all, because you will be viewed as untrustworthy. Have fun and be yourself on Neopets, Facebook, and Twitter. Just make sure you don't go overboard and put inappropriate pictures on your lookup, shop, gallery, petlookup, or petpage. Also when you write things on the neoboards do not write any rude or insulting posts about other people. Just remember to have good clean fun!

5. do not flame

What is a flame? Well, a flame is when someone posts or sends someone a rude or insulting message. Obviously, this is an inappropriate gesture and is considered immature and unnecessary behavior. Not only is sending a rude message wrong, but replying to a rude message is also wrong. In this case you should not fight fire with fire. If someone sends you a rude or inappropriate message, block their messages, do not respond, and report them to the webmaster. Remember, the worst thing you can possibly do is respond to a flame.

6. do not spam

For those of you who don't know what spamming is, spamming is when someone continually posts the same message over and over again on the neoboards or on websites like Facebook. Spamming is also when someone posts a message that contains a link to a virus infected site. Not only is this annoying, but it can also cost someone a lot in computer repairs. Some people think that infecting people's computers with viruses is funny, but it is very inconvenient and costly. The good news is that Neopets does not allow links to other sites unless they are approved by Neopets. If you are interested in checking out any of these sites, look at the navigation bar at the top of your screen and click on the word "community". You will see a text box labeled, "Fan Sites" and it lists all of the websites outside of Neopets that are approved by TNT. These sites are always virus-free!

7. be conservative

When you receive an e-mail, would you prefer to read a long, boring, vague e-mail or would you prefer to read a short and to-the-point email with as few words as needed? If you said that you would rather read e-mail number two, then you are like most people. Always write as short an e-mail as possible. Also don't send multiple e-mails to the same person. For instance, every once in a while, I receive a lot of e-mails from the same person regarding group meeting or something like that, and the leader tends to constantly send me unnecessary updates to the same meeting. Always make sure that you have all your facts straight and you don't have any more information to add before you send an e-mail. Remember, less e-mails received and less e-mails sent makes for a happy inbox.

8. do not send e-mails, texts, or facebook posts late at night.

Staying up late and sending e-mails or posting messages can say a lot about a person. If you are a night-owl like me, you tend to stay up very late when most people are sleeping. It's not like you are a bad person or anything, it's just that you might have a little trouble sleeping or you are staying up late cramming for an exam. Although I hate to admit it, I once made the mistake of e-mailing my high school teacher late on a school night. I had not noticed what time it was and accidentally e-mailed her a question. The next day my teacher saw it and notified my parents. They were very upset that I had done this and I got what I deserved (I know, I'm not perfect). So don't ever send anyone e-mails or post messages late at night. It can make some people wonder what you are doing up so late and it can also lead to some very hasty conclusions concerning your character. You want to send e-mails between the times 6:00a.m. and 10:00p.m. These are considered to be non-sleeping hours.

9. SSS (Shop secure sites)

Be careful of where you go on the internet to shop. Now I know that some of you are children that do not own a credit card or you are a responsible, adult, internet user that already knows about the do's and don'ts about shopping online_ but I do think it is necessary to talk about this subject, just to be safe. There are quite a few websites that will try to steal your credit card number and take all of the money in your account. There are ways to avoid this however. The most common is by paying for an identity protection service, but there are a few other good things you can try that won't cost you anything. Some good ways to find out about the credibility of a site is by going to sites like Facebook or website review sites where people post comments about sites they have purchased merchandise from. Do not ever believe comments posted on the site that you plan to buy from, as these can easily be faked. If you find posts talking about credit card theft or unsatisfactory service, do not risk it. There are a few sites that are guaranteed to provide good service and are scam-free, such as amazon.com. Always remember to do some research when you are buying from an unfamiliar website.

10. use discretion

Never expose your personal information. This mistake is very common in today's society where many teenagers and even some adults accidentally expose their personal information, such as their address or talk about their personal life in very specific detail. This happens most often on Facebook and Twitter. Now I'm not saying that these websites are bad or anything, they can even be useful if you want to promote your business. However posting personal information can endanger a person, because you never know who is going to see the information, and like I said before, information that you upload to the internet never ever goes away, no matter how hard you may try to erase it. It is very important that everyone be aware of this, not just Neopets users.
