the desert heat bears down on you . . .
You've been lost for hours, struggling through the scorching sands of the Lost Desert.
Your mouth is dry, sand gathers in the corners of your mouth. It's in your eyes, ears, nose. It's suffocating you.
Your head spins, your vision blurs, and you fall into the dunes. Sand crawls into your clothes, between your fingers, in your hair. Hot, golden sand, covering you.
You groan, pain sears through your sun-burnt skull.
You black out.
... is there any hope?
Slowly, painfully, you come to.
Every inch of your skin is blistered and red, the sun is unrelenting.
Slowly, painfully, you get to your feet.
What's that...? Just beyond the dune.
The image wavers for a moment, before becoming solid, real. A collection of palm trees, a grove of palm trees, you dare think, sits just beyond the dune.
You begin to stagger over.
i suppose there is always hope.
The shade offers some relief for your burnt skin.
You discover that the grove of palms hides a pool of water. Cool, blue, clear, perfect.
You take off your shoes and dip your tired, aching, blistered feet into the soothing waters.
You hear a noise behind you. You turn, alarmed.
Two golden eyes look up at you, studying you. They belong to a hissi, two foot long. He has golden scales, speckled with pale blue. He wears delicate golden jewellery on his wings and tail. He smiles, knowingly.
Do not be alarmed, one who is so far from home.
Feel free to stray, feel free to roam,
But warning be, bring here no frightful thing.
Here, all is at home, except those inflicting danger's sting.
Lest feel my wrath, my power, my anger,
In my oasis, there will be no danger.
He nods at you, you gape at him, he smiles.
You are safe, you are well, traveller.
Sleep awhile, enjoy the shade, taste the fruit.
You are safe, you are well, enjoy the shade.
He slithers away.
Thanderwin; protector, guardian, peace enforcer.
Thanderwin is mysterious, appearing at the oasis when he pleases, leaving when he wishes and never disclosing any information about himself.
Did he make the Oasis?
Is he a minor God?
How does he protect it?
Where did he come from?
Why does he protect the Oasis?
No one knows, he's mysterious. I think he likes it that way.
He's obviously kind-hearted. He has to be, otherwise why would he protect the Oasis, and help lost people in the desert?
Or does he get something out of it?
In Thanderwin's case, there are more questions than answers.
