Welcome!

This is an Art and Coding tutorial page! :'D
Use the links to the left to navigate! 8)

Last updated on November 8th, 2009.
*UNDER LOTS OF CONSTRUCTION*
I'm adding tons of new sections, I've decided to devote the rest of my year to this Tutorial. I want it to be GREAT. (it also makes me feel good about myself ahahaha. |D)

Caution! This page is IMAGE HEAVY.
(before you complain, it's got mostly art tutorials, duuuur.) xP
So, sorry; this page may load a little slow. :c

Updates:

November 8th: Hey, no longer working on a pet app, so I have more time to update. This site ha now been added to the Soroptimist Directory. Awesome! 8D
Also the s key on my keyboard is broken, so if you notice a word without s's it's because I didn't pound hard enough on my stupid keyboard. |8C

October 16th: Just transfered the new layout/content to the actual page! IT'S OFFICIAL! HOORAY! Fixed errors and stuff, Hopefully everything will be spell/grammar checked by tomorrow. xD; Add the old MS paint tutorial and the OC 4.5+ Tutorial. Hoping to complete the section on saving soon as well. Also maybe add in the FAQ. Weeee~

October 15th: Finally got the two new tutorials compressed and up! 8D Now I'm working on updating some coloring sections and someone requested a a candlelight tutorial a while back that I need to do. ( this might turn into a "lighting tutorial" just because lighting is FUN. ) A Liquify Tutorial was also suggested! Please keep suggesting things guys! I know it takes me a while to get stuff done, but I WILL do it so yay!
Also started retyping all the intros I lost. xP

September 26th: haha sorry, kinda died thanks to some new puppies. Anywho, I've been doing all the coding and stuff on notepad now because I had almost finished all the text, accidently hit refresh, and lost it all. :C not fun. Oh and I finish two more tutorials about lineart, juts have to compress them. c: I've started on some coloring tutorials now. (and I've also downloaded a screen recording program so that I can record what I do on photoshop and make tutorials that way! YAY! So I apologize for seeming inactive. xD but I AM doing stuff!

July 3rd: Started on the new introduction sections, because typing is easy. xD Also made some new headers. ALSO FUN! Happy early Fourth of July! hooray!

July 1st: New Layout, say good bye to ugly scroll boxes and hello to the single file format! :'D AND AN UPDATE SECTION. XD WOW we waited too long for that. |D

So You Wanna Be an Artist?

Are you ready young grasshopper? Because this is going to be INTENSE. ... Or maybe not. You know, who really knows for sure?

AHOY THERE! Hello there, matey! I'm the great Scurvy Dog Zel, feared across the 7 seas! ARR. There be tutorials come'n yer way on this page! why I be talkin' like a pirate? uh.... fufufu. I AM a pirate.... right? No? I'm not? I don't even have an eyepatch? IDENTITY CRISIS? ...Whoa, you scared me there. Okay well my name's -strategically placed loud noise here- but here on the interwebs you can call me Zel. I made this page because I draw and code 24/7, and tons (okay, maybe like... 5) of people ask me how I do it! So there. c8

People are always telling me things like you draw so good, I wish I could do that. or man, I can't draw like you at all; never in a million years! and quite frankly, I am fed up with it. Nobody is THAT good. So first, get those thoughts out of your head for your own sake. Don't ever tell yourself you'll never be as good as so-and-so, or that you'll never be able to draw well even if you tried. NO NO NO. IT'S NOT TRUE! It's my biggest pet peeve, like, ever. If you keep thinking those things then you'll never get anywhere. so, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER! -arm thrust- 8D

Anyways, You're here because you wanna pretty up your sketches, right? Well, YOU'VE WASHED UP ON THE RIGHT ISLAND! 8D HORRAY! sooo... Zel hath created tutorial page, and tutorial page shall teach (badly, but hey...) o8 I hope you enjoy these, but most of all, I hope they help you in some way. I just have one rule for you: Experiment past what I tell you, don't just copy me. Learn from me. Find your own style; be unique! -dramatic thumbsup-
Oh wait, I have another rule: Read the text. Trust me, it's there for a reason. xP
Have fun, and just ignore my boredom doodles. :D

Also, if you need anything, have suggestions, or want to fix a problem, then feel free to contact me.

Disclaimer / About the Page

Disclaimer: First, there are typos and spelling errors. Grammatical stuff too. It try my best to check it, but seeing how this isn't a professional site, it really doesn't matter to me as long as you understand what I'm trying to get across.
Yes, there are loads of art tutorials much better than this one. At times I've wanted to completely delete this one; However, there aren't very many art tutorials actually on Neopets. So I've kept these tutorials for those who don't want to go offsite. Though, I encourage you to use any means neccessary to become an artist, whether it be books, school, other websites, other people etc. If you limit your resources, you'll limit your abilities. Just keep that in mind.

These tutorials were ment to help beginning/intermediate artists with their digital programs. It's best if you've drawn before (no matter how good you are at it) and it greatly helps if you understand the basic tools of each program. (ex: Like how to create a new file in photoshop, or what the brush tool is, basic stuff like that.) I will eventually get to tool and interface tutorials, but for now I'm trying to get techniques out of the way. If you are an experienced or professional artist...I have no idea why you are here. xDDD !

Some of my techniques my be similar to other peoples'. The first reason being, great minds think alike! XD it's probably coincidence. The second reason being: I learn from other people. I absorb the things I like about their styles and cram it together making my own. The same is probably true with you. Don't feel like you're gonna copy somebody or something by learning from them; Hey, we're all inspired by each other. I made these tutorials so you wouldn't have to go through the issues I had to. Hopefully, it won't take you 5 years to learn how to color like me. |DDDD; -fail-

I am human and I make errors! I am also mostly self taught so I really don't know the sciences of art. I know that certain things work and certain things don't, but I might not know why. If you see an error or something that could be detrimental to a young artist please tell me so I can correct it and learn myself!! I'm still learning artsy things myself! xD

I have opinions and they show up in this tutorial. I try not to be biased but well, there are just some things that I just can't stand and I'm going to tell you about it. So please, what I say isn't the only way to do things or think about them, just my way. I encourage you to think on your own and develop your own ideas and techniques. This is just designed to be a starting point. Also, if you disagree with something, feel free to like nm me and try to change my mind about it. xD But, don't be rude and try to sound like an intelligent human being with plausible arguments. "Because it's better" will not convince me.

Feel free to ask me any kind of questions! If you need help with ANYTHING please don't feel like you can't ask, because you can! I'll also be happy to give you any pointers/critiques I can if you think it would help you. c:

This page:

These tutorials first came into existance back on May 12th 2007. It was originally hosted by my aisha, Aonette; however, some problems occured forcing me to move the page (and change its layout) around October 2007. Then it was hosted by another one of my pets who eventually left my keep making me move the page yet again. At that point, I started extending the tutorials from photoshop into other art programs because people requested it. Now the page has been hosted by Tesseret, the ice aisha, without complaint. c:
I have since improved in my photshopping abillities and decide to redo the entire thing, so here we are now. I have now begun to add more things that people have asked questions about like shading, perspective, coding, layout making, and drawing itself. 8D YAY!
I have worked very hard on this page, so I ask you not to steal the coding, graphics, or actual tutorials.

TUTORIALS IS SCROLL BOXES ARE FORM MY OLD TUTORIAL PAGE. THEY WILL BE REDONE TO BE SINGLE IMAGES. They are very ugly and old and dumb, I'm sorry. :c

Frequently Asked Questions

I need to make this section.

HEY, ASK ME QUESTIONS. }8C -point-

Introducing Digital Art!

Digital art is made on the computer. Wow. There are loads of programs you can use to make art on the computer, some intended for that purpose som not. Some of the most well-known programs are Photoshop (PS), Corel, Open Canvas (OC), Microsoft Paint (MS Paint), Paint Shop Pro (PSP), and GIMP.

In order to make drawing on the computer a more natural process, many artists use hardware called Tablets.
A tablet uses a USB slot, and pretty much takes the place of a mouse. The great thing is, "the mouse" is pen shaped and can sense how much pressure you are holding it with (and sometimes the way you tilt it). Really expensive tablet allow you to see the computer screen on it's pad, allowing for a really natural experience! YAY! 8D
Images are from Amazon.

A Wacom Intuos 4! Range from $199 to $680+ on Amazon. Comes in different sizes. (The bigger ones are more expensive.)

Wacom Techno Cintiq 21UX, about $1999 on Amazon (smaller size is $999, but apparently it's not that great for the money). @__@ Awesome. It's as close as you can get to drawing naturally on a computer.

Genius MousePen 8 x 6-Inch Graphic Tablet for Home and Office, can be $49.51 on Amazon. One of my best buds has one, and it's pretty awesome for the price.

Find a tablet that suits you, do research before you buy one and stuff.

NOTE: Tablets do not improve your art skills. They just make things easier. Don't think that'll you suddently become really great with digital art if you buy a 2000 dollar tablet. Getting use to a tablet takes time and practice! It was really hard for me to use one at first! P: And even now, I draw much better with a pencil and paper than I do with a tablet on the computer. xD
If you are considering being a digital artist fo srs, tablets really help and are worth the money; they take getting used to, but MAN PEN PRESSURE OMG SO AWESOME. okay... whoa Zel.. breathe.... ahhhhhh. Okay, so yeah, Tablets = Must.
But you know, the mouse is good too, I like using my mouse for pixel art. XD So don't forget about your mouse in all your tablet frenzy! XD

Anyway, back to digital Art... P:

Pros:
- Inexpensive in the long run. ( You only have to pay for it once; excluding printing materials )
- Clean ( It won't stain your clothes! )
- No dangerous fumes or substances. 8D
- Easy to get the exact color you want.
- Loads of cool tools, shortcuts, and effects.
- Easy to correct mistakes!
- Easy to manipulate size and shape
- Looks very clean on things that manipulate light (screens, projecters, etc.)
- Easy to duplicate and share with other people!
- Esay to transport! well... if you have a laptop. |D ...or put it on a flash drive...

Cons:

- Expensive in the sort run; program packages can be over $600, tablets anywhere from $50 to $2000 and up.
- Requires professional printing equipment.
- Prints don't sell for nearly as much money as traditional peices, but that really depends on other variables. (number of prints, artist, level of expertise, etc.)
- Digital works may look different to other people due to screen differences. (different color ranges, operating systems, brightness/contrast, screen resolution, loading capabilities, etc.)
- If you lose the file, it's gone forever. :c
- In order to print with high quality, huge sizes are required (300 dpi+; images that are over 10,000px x 10,000px)
- Can created health problems related to computers; Easily avoided by sitting in a well lit room and taking frequent breaks. Dur.
- Programs can take a very long time to completely master and can also become obsolete. :c
- Not as wide a range of colors as traditional mediums.
- Some snobby, artsy folk don't think digital art is actually art because they think the computer does all the work. Ignore them. They need to chill.

IMHO, the pros definitely outweigh the cons, but hey, that's just me.

Introducing Traditional Art!

Traditional art is what people mistakinly call "hand-drawn" on the internet. Because people like to argue and stir up trouble for no reason, this can spark many a rant about how "all art uses ur hands wut." Obviously, Traditional artwork has been around more than digital art.... unless maybe you are an alien. 8|
Traditional is more "natural." IMHO Traditional Art is a little easier to get a hang of, however digital and traditional art are complimentary and they share many techniques. Traditional painting is very similar to digital painting for example. What you learn with one carries over to the other. The only differences between digital and traditional artwork are the tools used. c:

Traditional art has a much wider range of mediums than digital, well, in a way. It really depends on how you define the word "medium" but whatever.
It includes: All kinds of paint (tempera, oil, encaustic, watercolor, acrylic, etc.), colored pencils, graphite, charcoal, ink, Graphic arts like woodcutting, markers, sharpies, practically every kind of fabric, paper, and surface imaginable, sculpture stuff like clay, metalworks, marble, anything you can mold, photography, chalk, anything you can glue or fix to anything else.....
well okay, Traditional art is pretty much EVERYTHING that isn't made with a computer.... |D

Pros:

- It's messy (and therefore FUN! 8D)
- Inexpensive in the shortrun... well.. sometimes.. depends on what you're buying.
- Widely accepted. Nobody's gonna be like, "ewww traditional art. xP
- practically unlimited color range
- Looks awesome IRL, no printing neccessary.
- Sells for more than a digital print (but again there are variables)
- Some mediums may be easier to master than a digital program, but it depends a personal preference and abilities.
- More natural; No viewing constraints. When working on a traditional piece you don't have to "zoom out" to see the whole thing. xD;
- Wide range of tools, mediums, and effects for everybody!
- You don't have to worry about deleting Traditional art with a click of a button. XD

Cons:

- Messy ( it'll kill your clothes. |D )
- You may be working with dangerous stuff; Just don't eat it or inahle it and you'll be fine. |D
- Can be difficult to mix the exact color you want. :(
- Can be difficult to correct mistakes; no undo button! D8
- Large canvases and materials can be hard to transport.
- Traditional works never look as good on a computer as they do IRL. 8C
- Some mediums can be ruined if not taken care of properly. (Keep watercolors away from water/steam. Crayons melt. xD)
- Expensive in the long run. ( After a while, those Crayolas will total up to more than $600, I assure you. 8D; )
- Unless it's something like woodcutting, engraving, silk or screen printing, etc. Traditional art can be difficult to duplicate with the same quality as the original. (but again, that depends on the thing you're duplicating and the equipment you have, blah blah blah.)

I think the pros outweigh the cons here too.
There's no reason not to do BOTH digital and traditional art! They're both awesome! 8D

It all depends on you. :0 (like everything else in the universe. xD)

Introduction to Photoshop

Okay, let me just say it. Photoshop has a lot of buttons. Photshop has even more cool shortcuts. Photoshop has pretty much unlimited customization, and countless filters, brushes, and patterns you can download or even make yourself. That being said, use it. Don't even get me started on the "But using filters and stuff is cheating" rant. IT IS NOT CHEATING, but it can look cheap (and horrible) if you let your cute little computer do all the work.
Photoshop is only worth the money if you explore it. when I first got it, I was like, "man, I do like PS, but -insert other program here- is better at -insert whatever here-." But as I continue to use it, it just keeps surprising me and just making my day! just the other day I finally figured out how to use the duel brush (OMG TWO BRUSHES AT THE SAME TIME WHAT AWESOME) (if you have no idea what that is don't worry).
What I'm saying is, if you get photoshop and spend the time to lread tutorials and learn stuff, you WON'T be disappointed. If you just open it up and expect yourself to be instantly awesome... well buddy your in for a sad.. well.. a Sad something.

There are LOADS of versions of photoshop. So I'm going to say it now. If you plan on shelling out money, get the regular Photoshop (ie Photoshop 7, Photoshop CS2, CS3, whatever is new now idk). Photoshop Elements doesn't have quite as many INSANELY AWESOME FEATUREs. (such as the pen tool) If you already have elements, it's okay, it's a good photoshop, I mean come on, Photoshop is photoshop. xD This is just my advice, I have both Photoshop 7 (and ImageReady 7 *) and Elements 6 and I use PS 7 a whole lot more than Elements; that's for sure. XD

*( ImageReady is an adobe program that lets you animate stuff. [not on the same level as Flash though, actually I don't really know; I don't use IR that much] It should come with PS, it came with mine at least. you know what? I'm not sure. xD sorry. Elements already has the animation stuff built in a little bit so that is a plus I guess. xD])

Okay I bet you're bored out of your mind so lets actually do some stuff.

PS DISCLAIMER #1: I CANNOT TELL YOU ABOUT EVERY SINGLE BUTTON AND EVERY SINGLE FEATURE. I don't know all of them. I mean, I've had it for 5 years and I'm STILL figuring stuff out! I really wish I could tell you everything about photshop, but for now I'm only going to tell you about the really handy stuff that speeds things up (like shortcuts and little tricks).

About questions: If you are having a serious problems with finding a tool I'm using, then feel free to ask me, I'll try to help, but I've only had experience with PS 7 and Elements 6. You might have a differnt version than I do, and I really just can't help you out there. ALSO if your photoshop 7 is doing something weird and you want to ask me about it (like if you are having problems following a method because something odd is happening) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take some screenshots of what's happening! (and put them on a petpage) I have to be able to SEE what's going on; a picture is worth a thousand words after all! xD I REALLY want to help you out the best way I can! :D

Sorry Sorry! I know I talk too much! D:

okay without further ado:

Handy Dandy Photoshop Shortcuts!

Things that I wish someone had told me when I first got my Photoshop, haha. XD

Okay, the most wonderful shortcut of them all: A TABLET.
and hey! this shortcut works for EVERY art program! XD WOW! LOL.
-shot-
Okay... uh REAL SHORTCUTS NOW LOL. XD

The first thing you need to do the moment you open your adorable Photoshop is Go to "Edit" then "Preferences" when the drop down menu appears, and then "general" when that appears. (or just hit ctrl+K) Then you need to see how many history States you have ( History States = Undo slots; the more you have, the more you can undo. :'D). Now I have mine at 100. XD and sometimes even that isn't enough... |D HOWEVER, having a large number will probably slow your computer down. My compy is fast so I haven't suffered any consequences, but you know, everything has a consequence so be careful. xD

The window that pops up should look like this! There! Lots of undos for Zel! XD

Okay that wasn't really a shortcut but whatever. |D Undos are still important.

Okay I've stalled long enough:

Handy Shortcut keys (usually the control key plus one or two more keys to be pressed at the same time; single letters toggle between the tools on the tool bar; hitting shift, alt, and the space bar while have another tool selected also does AWESOME things; the only way to find them all is to press buttons and find out! 8D)
The plus means add the follwing key; ctrl+Z means hit ctrl and Z at the same time. Ctrl+- means hit the ctrl key and the - key at the same time. c:

ctrl+Z Undo
ctrl+Y (or ctrl+shift+Z; you can change that one) Redo
ctrl+- and ctrl++ Zoom out and zoom in respectively.
ctrl+A , ctrl+D , ctrl+shift+I Select all, Deselect (make the marching ants go away), and inverse select respectivly; I use these a lot.
ctrl+C , and ctrl+V Copy and paste. c:
ctrl+S , ctrl+O, ctrl+N Save, Open, and New. Very useful!
holding down Alt or Spacebar while the brush tool is selected. allows you to eyedropper a color and move the canvas respectively with out switching tools. VERY handy while painting with photoshop~ C: (spacebar does the same thing regardless of what tool is selected though)
Alt or Shift while the Magic Wand or Lasso tool is selected Subtract a selection from current selection and add a selection to current selection; Very handy when selecting things that aren't contiginous, try it out! xD

That's pretty much all the keyboard shortcuts I use, there are TONS more though.

Next we have fancy fast buttons! They're FANCY. c8

First we have the layer shortcuts:

Red: Locks the pixels. Makes it so you can't color on transparent pixels. REALLY nice for like... everything, especially coloring lineart. c:
green: makes the layer invisible/visible; not really a shortcut, but just though you'd like to know. xD
Blue: Makes a new layer; Also if you click and drag a layer and drop it on this button, it'll copy that layer. SUPER handy. 8D
Purple: delete the layer by either clicking or click and drag. c:

Then the path shortcuts (REALLY handy if you're like me and use the path/pen tool to do lineart and other things; I love paths.)

Red: fills in the path
green: strokes the path; SUPER handy for lineart. c:
Blue: makes the path into a selection
Purple: makes a selection into a path. 8D

Next we have Liquify. (Shift+ctrl+X , though it's just as easy to go to "Filter" and then "liquify" xD) It is one of the most handy things ever on photoshop, I use it mainly to correct mistakes on paintings and sketches. It takes a little getting used to, but it is SOOOO handy. xD

As you can see, I was able to fix her braid (roughly, I need to refine it and make it look like the rest of her hair) I was able to keep most of the colors, and I didn't have to erase it and try to redraw it. c: I used it ALOT to help me fix her face. |D like I realized her eyes were too big, so I used it to shrink them a little... (not seen in pictures) LIQUIFY IS GREAT! (and whoa her head is huge... maybe I'll use it to make her head smaller. XDDDD)

And finally the "select and delete what I colored outside the lines so I don't have to manually erase it myself" trick:

It will be described in the Overviews. so right now, go read one of those. XD I'll make a little one here later for your convienance.

There are more, probably; be fancy and see what you can find! c8

Photoshop Overview 1

One method I (rarely) use to color things on photoshop.
this is the "Do it yourself and be neat about it" way. xD

Being redone! come back later!
The old tutorial is below, it goes over the method, but not very well. But hey, whatever helps, helps. |D;

here we go. C:
first we have to have a SKETCH!
either scan one in or draw it on the computer or whatever you want.
I usually draw my sketches on OPEN CANVAS 1.1 because of the smoooooooth lines. :B

MAKE SURE YOUR SKETCH IS SUPER BIG!!!! if you using a scanner, change the dpi from 72 or whatever to 300. :D
If you drew it on the computer, uh, resize it to a bigger size.
(don't just magnify it! =3=;;)

here we go, this is my sketch. :D it's huuuuuuuge. see? the 100% means that's how big your picture really is. see how her face takes up the screen? that's how big I make my pictures. the bigger you start out, the more detail you can put in! remember though, when your finish you'll have to resize it to a smaller size so don't go detail crazy. C:

next is lineart. :B MAKE A NEW LAYER OR ELSE. make sure it's transparent and name it lineart so you don't forget what it is.

I put a white layer in between my lineart and sketch layers so I can see what the lineart looks like with out the sketch. I just keep it invisible (click the eye button on and off) to see my sketch and stuff.
USE LAYERS AND PHOTOSHOP'S COOL BUTTONS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!

tada! lineart on another layer (I used the pen tool for this. :])! I WILL EXPLAIN LINEART LATER. xP it'll have it's own section.

now for coloring. :D
MAKE A NEW LAYER!!!! dsafdksalfjksd. xD;;

I start with skin/fur/flesh/whatever first. because. I just do. xD so pick a color and color! you can use the paintbucket tool if you want to be fast, just make sure you select "use all layers" and you'll be able to fill stuff in even though you're on two different layers! NIFTY! 8D -shot-
sometimes the paint bucket tool does weird stuff, so I just color stuff in, and then erase where I went out of the lines. :B

then shade! ON A DIFFERENT LAYER! PLZZZZZ.

I'll explain shading later on.

then I color hair and eyes. |D I use around 3 layers for hair but only one or two for eyes.

hair! first layer for the base color. :3

second layer for the shading

3rd layer for the unrealistic crazy shines! 8D;
for these, just make a new layer, color solid white on whatever you want shiny, and then change the opacity. :D TADA! instant plastic look! xD

hair. xD

eyes.. make sure the eye layer is ON TOP of the skin layer. XD but under lineart. |D;;; and I'll explain how to do them later. they're SUPER easy. 83

now...? clothes and junk! xD

unlike skin and hair, I cram the base shading for clothes on one layer. :)

but I shade each article of clothing on a different one. xD;

then I make a sad attempt at texture on another layer, using opacity and stuff. |D

now just slap on a background and you're done. 83

LOL I AM SPARKELYYYYYY. *w*

Photoshop Overview 2

The method I use today for like... everything. This works on other programs with the "multiply" and "overlay" layer properties (like Open Canvas).
This is the "Let photoshop do most of it and save yourself the headache" way. xD

Click and Drag to the address bar!

I had to lower the quality a bit to make it load faster. sorry. D: but you get the idea, computers do not need to explode.

Lineart on Photoshop

There are two major methods of doing digital lineart with photoshop. The "do it yourself" way and the "wow I love the pen tool but it drives me insane" way. I use a mixture of them both. 8D

Hopefully it's not too confusing. |D

Click and drag to the address bar or tab or whatever! 8D

c:

Using Traditional Lineart with PS

Can't stand doing lineart on the computer but want to color things digitally? Have we got the method for YOU! Grab that sketch of yours and your favorite ink pens and we'll show you how! (since when did I become plural?)

Click and drag to the address bar or tab or whatever! 8D

Coloring Techniques on Photoshop

For beginners I might add or maybe intermediates...? idk. Most of these can (and should) be combined for super effects! This is how I color eyes, hair, skin, shiney things, clothes, you name it, etc. to make things picture perfect. Cel-shade? Smooth shade? doesn't matter, I'll explain both. c: or at least... try to and probably epically fail. |D

Also being redone. Ha, surprise. The old tutorials are below (They're not efficent, are only smooth shading, and also very ugly).

Coloring overly sparkly, anime-esque, eyes. c: Yay, dodge tool.

first, you know, have some eye lineart ready.
This eyes was drawn literally in 10 seconds in flash so it looks dumb, but we'll make it pretty.
START A NEW LAYER
call it eyes or something. :D and color it in. 8D

now get a darker color
and "shade" the eye around the outside and where the pupil will be. C:

now smudge it, the red lines/arrows indicate my brush strokes.
USE THE SMUDGE TOOL. it looks like a hand. NOT THE BLUR.
for the smudge tool, I'll keep it on a strength of 65-85% depending on how I feel. xD

alrighty, now get an even darker color and do (pretty much) the same thing. |D

now we'll make it shiny,
because in my brain, the shiny-er the better. xD
select your brush and get it into DODGE MODE! 8D Use LINEAR DODGE if you also have the COLOR DODGE option. C:
pick some areas of the eye where you want it to be shiny.

now uh, use the smudge tool again, and smudge the eye in lines radiating from the pupil, because that's what eyes do. |D
(man, the eye in this tutorial looks like poop. |D haha.)

now re-shine the eye with the DODGE mode again. :B
If you need to, use the BLUR TOOL to make the shine blend in a little better.

now put in some white shines and a pupil.
(the shines in this eye look weird and the pupil is too small, but, oh well. |D)

keep in mind that you'll be resizing your picture when you done, so the finished eye will be smaller, like this:

DONE! 8D

I skip steps, and add steps to this process, really, the only part that stays the same is the whole "using the dodge and smudge tools" thing.

I bet using the Burn tool as well will give you cool effects....

anyway, you can do eyes like 2130892830912830218302931313 different ways.
the key to making awesome eyes is EXPERIMENTATION!

here are some examples I whipped up:

TIPS! 8D

when using the Dodge tool, use uniquely shaped brushes! you can get some crazy shines that way. xD

The color you have selected will alter the tint the doge tool will make, for example, if you have blue selected and color on a purple surface, the shine will be purplish-blue, but if you have red selected, the shine will turn more pink.

using LOADS of white shines will make your character look watery eye'd, or even like they have a fever. |D so if you don't want that effect then limit your shines.

you can also start with gradients! and you don't always have to put pupils or shines, you can do whatever you want! C:

You don't have to have a bold black outline around the Iris of your eye either, you can use another color too, or just completely omit it! C:

that's why eyes are so fun to color.

remember, eyes are very important. They show the audience your character's personality. So make sure His or her eyes reflect the correct personality. xD

WEE! I AM DONE TALKING NOW, LOLZ. xD

Coloring plastic-looking, shiny, anime-esque hair. :p

get some lineart, make a new layer, and color the hair. :D

now, shade it.
MAKE A NEW LAYER FOR SHADING PLZ.
to shade hair, use brush strokes that follow the directional flow of the character's hair. C:

Now get a darker color and shade more. xD

now, highlight time.
take your eraser and erase some highlights. C: this should work and reveal the original hair color,
because you were smart and used another layer. XD

now take a lighter color a draw in some highlights.

now take the SMUDGE TOOL, 65-85 % strength, and make sure it is a hard brush. Then smudge, with the same brush stokes as step 2.

now use linear dodge and make some more highlights. :B

smudge them in, the select LINEAR BURN, or COLOR BURN, or something with the word BURN in it. xD

use this to fill in some more depth, e.g. shade with it. xD or whatever. then smudge it like you have been doing.

you can stop there, but lets make his hair PLASTIC! 8D

make A NEW LAYER and color pure white highlights on it.

smudge them.

then change the layer's opacity and fill to make the white less IN YOU FACE. xD

Now, MAKE A NEW LAYER! color white on it again, but this time, make it smooth, and not hair-strand-wispy shaped.
I usually make it kinda like a big fat curved line.
make it fattest where the light hits the head first. C:
also make sure it's only on the hair, erase where it goes one the face and stuff.

then change the opacity and fill to make it see-through.
feel free to add some little circle shines, or other weird shaped things. xD

and voila! x3

It's Tidus's head. xD

Coloring plastic-looking skin. IMHO you need a lot more shading in the face than this tutorial lets on. Don't be afraid to show some depth.

first grab some lineart,
MAKE A NEW LAYER (called skin)
and color the skin in. woop. C:

now we are going to add some shades.
-puts on sunglasses- B)

MAKE A NEW LAYER! call it skin shading or something. :V
now, make sure it's selected. |D;

OKAY! now we have to get the right brush, get a SOFT ROUND brush,
I right click to get the window below open, (in both PS7 and PSE 6)
but I don't know what you'll have to do, M SRY. Dx

okay now.... like shade the face (with a darker color),
make sure your light source stays pretty constant. C:
( I'M REALLY BAD AT THAT DON'T LOOK! D8 -runs away-)

typically, the side of the face Opposite or your light source will be completely shadowed, as well as under the nose, between the eyes ( not too much here though! O: ), under the lip, and like stuff. xD;

now get a darker color and shade some more. :B

now get the smudge tool, make the brush into AIRBRUSH SOFT ROUND MODE.
I will cry if you don't. D:

now smudge all around the face,
BUT HOLD UP HERE! the smudge tool can wreck your shading if you aren't careful.
look at the picture and then I'll explain. xP

in order to smudge right, you have to do this number, to explain, I'm going to try to smudge the black and gray together.
make a very small zigzag patterned brush stroke, like so:

woop. see? the smudge tool blends differently than the blur tool,
however, the black lost some of it's uh, "darkness" for lack of a better term.
just color some more black over and smudge it again. :B

Now, back to flesh. xD
lets had some highlights! ( and further make your character look like plastic! 8D; )

now smudge. :B

Now, we still have to add some more shadows. xD (you can never have too many, haha)
HOWEVER!
these shadows are different from the ones you just colored.
those shadows are what gives the face depth.
Now we're going to draw in the shadows made by like, the hair and nose and stuff, make them dark! I'd use either a dark greyish flesh tone or a dark blueish-gray-purple.
(because believe it or not, shadows are actually purple. I'm serious. xD)

for these, use the blur tool if you feel like it.
oops. I think I used the blur tool too much. Dx
but, you get the idea, I hope. xD

looky here, now your done. C:

(and look, Tidus suddenly has eyes! xD lolzzz isn't he purty?)

now, if you aren't sure how to get flesh tones in photoshop, here's some help. C:

basically, you get some red, orange, or yellow, and uh, follow those arrows I drew in. xD

to get this window, double click really fast on one of the two color squares in the tool-bar thing,
you know, where it shows where you color is selected. :B

when I shade stuff with this process, I go diagonally to the bottom right to get my shadows (and vice-verca for highlights).
then I add some purple-blue-gray (shadows) and like red and pink (highlights)and stuff. xD
just to make the person look alive.

well, there you go, skin! 8D LOL.

Coloring shiny materials:

Here's the old way I used to do this,

yes... follow the arrows stating at the red thing. It is EXACTLY like coloring eyes. c:

but!!!

now I have a newer, more complicated way. C:

GEMS!

, first lineart ( I did this in paint for time's sake)

then base coloring on a different layer!!

NOW, MAKE A NEW LAYER.
Get some sort of shading color ( I usually use purple) and shade the shapes. C:

Now put that shading layer in "multiply" mode and VOILA!

now... DUPLICATE THE SHADING LAYER! 8D
make the copy invisible for now.

make sure you have THE FIRST one selected! now go to the Gaussian blur filter thing. c:

make the first layer all nice and smooth. c:

okay, now since we got our of our lines, go to your lineart layer, grab the Magic wand tool, and click OUTSIDE of your lines, everything outside should get highlighted.
GO BACK to your FIRST shading layer, and hit the delete button on your keyboard. everything out of the lines should go away. C:

Next, Turn your SECOND shading layer un-invisible, and play with he opacity to make it less In-your-face.

now shading's all done. c: time for sparkles. make a new layer, and just color blue on it. (or whatever color your gem/sparkley thing is)

Delete what you colored outside the lines, turn the layer to LINEAR DODGE MODE, or dodge mode, whichever.
then mess with the opacity.

Make a new layer, and put more blue (or whatever color your gem/sparkley thing is). I'd make it more concentrated than the last.

change the layer to Linear dodge mode. ^^

add the finishing shines, for instance, I made yet another layer, and put some white blobs, then I duplicated that layer, Gaussian blurred one of then, and made the other a little transparent, much like how we shaded here. Then I made ANOTHER layer, and added the whitest shines. c:

hope that made sense!

Metal! O:

well, basically, just follow the pictures here. xD

this is for like, metals, particularly round ones. c:

lineart and base coloring. c:

Metal is usually characterized by super dark shines next to super light shines, the outside ring of a round metal thing is usually bright, where as whatever reflected in the center is darker and pushed and distorted to the sides. (just look at the picture. XD

now make it darker...

and darker... xD

and now blur it! 83

Now, make a new layer, and add white.. blur it too, and then make it really opaque.

then just make another layer, make some whiter circle shines, do that Duplication-Gaussian blur thing in the tutorial above... annnd there we go! 83

I also colored the lineart. xD

you can apply the same things to something not round, like this horribly drawn cylinder. 8D;

happy joy. C:

Glass! (even though I'm terrible at it! 8D)

We shall begin with the lineart and base coloring for a glass sphere. c:

okaaaayyy, now, make some sort of gradient thing happen. XD
make the glass dark in the middle, and light on the outside! C:

now just shade it regularly with out Duplicate-Gaussian blur method. (in the above tutorial)
also lighten the opacity a lot.

now make a new layer, draw in some white shines, and make them opaque. 83

then make another layer, and do it again....

then make another layer and make more...but don't change the opacity of the last ones. c:

now as you can see, this is very dark Glass. x: so make the opacity of the shading and base color layers to make the glass lighter.

done! 8D

now Glass is transparent, but when something is seen through glass that isn't flat, it gets distorted... c:

and that is the end of my knowledge of glass. x:

Painting On Photoshop

Sick of drawing lineart? Want to try something new? Well I'll try to explain painting on photoshop. I'm new to it too, so I can't say I can explain it that well, but hey, I can try. xD

Coming soon. P:

Animation with Photoshop

For those of you with Elements and/or ImageReady. Nothing fancy like Flash, but hey! it's fun!

Intro to MS Paint

MS Paint is cool.

BLAH INTERESTING TEXT HERE. 8P

Lineart and Coloring on MS Paint

Yaaaaaaaaaaay.

Lineart will come eventually. |D;

Here's how I color with paint:

First, lineart is good. I'll explain lineart and sketching in another tutorial.

So lineart. I'm a lazy dumbface, so I made this lineart with photoshop and pixelated it. It looks horrid, and I'm lazy. |D

Now fill in base colors, which are the MID RANGE colors in your picture.
Keep in mind with my style, shading will eat most of the base colors, as seen below:

so if you don't want your picture to be insanely dark, start with lighter base colors. c:

okay... now shade. ^^ with a darker color, or whatever. |D;

NOW DO IT AGAIN. 83

now add some highlights. 83
With stuff like Aru's Mane and feathery wings here, I just added white atop the shading.
No blending with these, it makes them glow more. ^^;
also add darker tones to stuff in the distance. (the wings on the other side)

now for the blending. @_@;;
what I do is pick about 3 tones in between each shading level, and scribble them in.

See? it's really easy, just takes a while. o_x;
I also add in those shiney circle things at the end. |D

now finish the rest like that, and slapp on a background, and you're done. |D

END OF POOPY TUTORIAL! 8D

sorry the pictures are so big. ^-^;;

Creating Layouts with MS Paint

Yaaaaaaaaaaay.

OpenCanvas 1.1 Overview

Open canvas 1.1 (OC 1.1 for short) is a great FREE program. To get it, simply search for it on google and try to find a place to download it.
I DEFINITELY recommend anyone with a tablet to get it. Even though I use mostly photoshop, I do most of my sketching in OC. c:

There are two really great features you can't get anywhere else, or at lest free anyway.
one is OC's "Event playback option." Oc basically records what you do, and then you can watch yourself draw! it's very helpful. You can also get other people's event files off the OC website and watch them draw too! it's really awesome.
(actually you can download free screen recorders, which are also very helpful. I urge everybody to find a way to record the making of their digital images...)
The second feature is this online drawing thing. basically, if you search on the web for a free program called WarPaint, you'll be able to DRAW ONLINE WITH YOUR FRIENDS! I've done it several times with my best friend, it's a little glitchy, but still fun all the same.

It's a Japanese program, so when you download it, you have to change it to English, by clicking what's highlighted below:

Alright, because OC isn't very complicated at all, I'll be happy to explain all the tools.

When you first open up OC, you'll probably see about 5 or so little window with stuff on 'em.
(oh and if you're completely lost, to start a picture got to FILE and then NEW, then select the hight and width that you want)

anyway, one of these important windows is the TOOL BAR! 8D -insert confetti-
it looks like this:

A - have this selected when you want to use the brush, pencil, blur, or eraser tools.

B - eye dropper, it selects colors. you can also just right click. o3o

C - square thing, it makes squares that are the color you have selected. XDDD

D - weird shape thing. It supposed to make shapes but it's really kinda hard to do, I don't recommend using it at all.

E - this moves your "paper" around on the screen

F - Zoom in! or you can hit ctrl + for the same effect.

G - this moves the IMAGE around on your paper. CAREFUL!! if you move the image past the edges of the paper, you'll lose it!

H - line tool, it only makes straight lines. o3o

I - White square thing, it makes white squares I guess. xD

J - white weird shape thing, uh, just.. don't use it. D| big pain.

K - this rotates your paper.

L - Zoom out! just hit ctrl - for convenience.

the next window you see is the Pencil/brush/blur/Eraser Window thing. C:

A- this changes the size of your brush/eraser/pencil/blur tool

B- this changes the size of the middle part of the brush and pencil tools. Blur and eraser don't have this.

C- this changes the hardness of your tool. just mess with it to see what it does. it's hard to explain. xD

D- enable/disable size. I actually have no idea how to explain what this does... just mess with it. |D

E- enable/disable transparency. uhhh. same here. |D sorry.

F- enable/disable edge smoothness. This is self explanatory. o3o only the brush and eraser have this.

G - these are only available for the brush, it changes how the brush spreads color around and junk.

also, there are five little tabs at the top of the window. when you mess with a brush or pencil or whatever to attributes that you like, click the little blue disc button in the corner to save it to that tab.

the brush tool is probably the most complicated thing on OC.
this is what happens when you put those three little bars at the top at zero.

It makes the color come out very quickly and fully. I usually have this preset saved on one of my tabs. I use it to color the base color layer because there is no flood fill on OC.

next this is what happens when you put them all on 100 percent. (the blue dot over to the side is showing you what color I actually have selected)

It comes out VERY light, and blends a lot with the white like so. o3o

next, this is what happens when you just have the green strip on. (the horizontal solid colors were done with the default preset, just focus on the two vertical strokes)

as you can see, the more green bar you have, the more the brush lets white blur in with your color.

now what if we had just red? or just blue? they do this:

as you can see, they just let the selected color (green in this case) show through. o3o

now what about red and blue but no green? it does this number:

I have no idea why, but it does. |D

yeah, just experiment with the bars until you find something you like.

now the blur tool. I hardly ever use it, but here it is: (you can only change the size, FYI)

and then the eraser.

1 has both transparency and smooth edge selected
2 has just smooth edge selected
and 3 has neither selected.

woop. again just experiment with the tools until you get something you like. then SAVE IT TO A TAB SO YOU DON'T LOSE IT! C8

remember how I said I didn't use the blur tool? yeah I use the brush to blur things, and I'll show you what my tool preset is to do that:

I will explain exactly how I do this in a later section. c:

the next window? Layers!it looks like this:

A - toggles the layer visibility on and off.

B - changes the layer to either multiply, add, subtract. c:

C - shows you what's on the layer

D - changes the layer's opacity.

click and drag between B and C if you want to move the layer on or under another layer.

to make a new layer, click on layer, and then select new layer. there are three different types of layers on OC.

the default is multiply, It's like the multiply mode on photoshop

It makes things look overlapped.

next is the Add layer, it's like the dodge mode on Photoshop.

this is how I make thing's shiny looking in OC. Experiment and you'll see what I mean.

next is the subtract Layer, it basically inverts all the colors. I never use this. |D

and there you go. o3o

now there's the color picker.

you can only select one color at a time, unlike photoshop. however if you want to "save" a certain color, just right click on one of the 16 rectangles to the far left. As you can see I keep those rainbow colors saved. the rest of this thing is pretty self explanatory. :B

Now I'm just going to warn you about changing the "paper" size of your picture. the window looks like this:

to get to it you got to EDIT and then RESIZE. (reoloution is like resize in photoshop)

everything is backwards in OC, so if you want pixels added to the top of your picture, you have to select bottom, if you want them on added on the bottom, select top, left and right are also like this. xD

now, if you wanna watch yourself draw, just go to FILE and then EXPORT EVENT FILE.

then click IMPORT EVENT FILE, find the file and open it. and then watch yourself draw! xD

NOTE: you can't export events if you start with or paste a JPEG (or any other file type) into the picture at any given time. :B you'll get a message telling you this. you also can't export event files if you do other things as well but I can't remember what they are... haha, you'll get a message though. c:

and those are all OC's tools. x3 I didn't explain everything though, so you'll have to explore OC by yourself. :B

an actual tutorial is coming soon! O: (includes lineart, shading, lighting, etc.)

OpenCanvas 4.5 +

I don't think you can buy Open Canvas 4.5+ (or any, for that matter) anymore. :C They've stopped selling their product to other countries. |D Still, it's a wonderful program, so if you can find it GO FOR IT! 8D It's nice for painting and sketching... yeah photoshop can do that stuff too, but sometimes it's nice to just open a program and go without messing with settings and junk first. c8 (I'll also explain how to use the tones in OC 4.5+, importing patterns and brushes too in a later tutorial.)

now the Tutorial, just click and drag it to the address bar or a tab, or wherever you need to, to make the full image appear.
There are lots of typos because I'm the world's worst speller, so, deal I guess.. sorry. xD

Part 1:Part 2:

Painting with Open Canvas

In both OC 1.1 and OC 4.5+. c:

Coming soon. xP

Pencil Techniques

...Because apparently they aren't as obvious as I thought they were. :|

Coming soon.

Colored Pencil Overview

Colored pencils are awesome. Hands down. Although great colored pencils are wax-based. Get some prismacolors; Crayola is nice, but it won't do the trick. And then we have watercolor colored pencils! Homg those are FUN. 8D

Coming soon.

Marker Overview

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY. The best brands for C3H7OH based markers are Prismacolor and Copic. Neopikos are poop and don't last very long. Crayolas are nice because they are washable and don't smell funny. They have their purpose, but it you don't want strokes, use a C3H7OH based marker. Then we have things like Sharpies and other permanent markers, those are fun. Paint markers are also fun, but they have very strong odors. x_x;

The tricks to arting with markers are: Mix them, Blend them, and Have lots of colors. c8

Coming soon.

Watercolor Overview

Watercolors can be use in many ways. 8P I mean like, some people like to make them all water-y and stuff, and others like to make them very thick. Either way, they're awesome. Crayola watercolors are great. Get the kind with looooads of colors though. :c if you want a better, non-copyrighted, professional color selection, get tube paints and mix 'em yourself. :'D

Coming soon. xP

General Info About Saving Things

SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE. ALWAYS SAVE.

Note: EXAMPLE IMAGES WILL BE PROVIDED AS SOON AS I GET OFF MY LAZY BUTT AND MAKE THEM. 8D YAY! Ew caps lock, sorry.

Being an artist ins't about skills alone. You must have the means to successfully turn your piece of art into something that is profesional and easily viewed. This applies to both Traditional and Digital pieces.

Saving" Traditional Works:

It's not quite like saving a digital file, but there are steps you can take to prolong the life of your traditional works.
First, make your work Gallery Ready. This means it must be clean. Absolutly no folds, creases, tears, and whatnot. Then the piece must be fixed with a fixitive spray to make sure it won't be smudged. Then the work must be professionally matted and framed. It's best if you can do all this yourself, but many art supply stores will matte and frame things for you.

Doing this will protect your art.

Framing and matting make your work look professional and will protect it from the elements. Well... most of the elements. BE SURE TO CARE FOR YOUR WORK AND KNOW WHAT YOUR MEDIUMS ARE WEAK AGAINST. Sunlight can fade color, steam will ruin watercolors, wax might melt, etc. Humidity will destroy pretty much everything. Keep your work indoors.
Fixative and Mounting will also protect your work. Fixative sprays ensure that your graphite, charcoal, and any other such works will not be smeared. (to a certain extent, I tend to pile on so much charcoal even the fixative won't work. |D) Also mounting your work helps it from warping. It's really awesome if you can get your worked steamed onto some foamboard at an art supply store, but you can also buy foam board and adhesive and mount it yourself. :'D
Use acid free materials. Using acid free, archival paper, tape, and the like keeps your work form deteriorating. Not doing this will turn your work yellow over the years. :|

Saving Digital Images Like an Intelligent Human Being:

There are an unlimited amount of file types you can save your image as. It's important to know what types of files are best for what kinds digital work. First some vocabulary.
Filename Extension: The suffix on your file that tells the computer how to encode it. In cool_file.gif, .gif is the filename extension. It tells the computer that the image "cool_file" should be encoded as a GIF file.
Vector: An image where the geometric shapes (and points, lines, and curves) of an image are stored as mathmatical formulas. These formulas tells the pixels where to appear on a specific screen resolution, which allows to have the best quality possible. When you zoom in on a vector image, quality is not lost and the image is not "pixelated." Yay! Vector images also print very nicely on paper. Vector file extensions are .swf (Shockwave Flash), .svg (Scalable Vector Graphics), .pdf (Portable Document Format), etc. (Inkscape is a wonderful, free vector program.)
Raster: An image where information is stored in grids of pixels (little square blocks of color). When you zoom in on a raster image, it becomes pixelated. The below file extensions are for raster images.
Dither / Dithering: A method used by computers to create a feel of depth and color with a limited color range. Basically the computer puts two colors together with pixels to create another color. Think of the Impressionist movement. They placed two colors side by side, say blue and red, to create another color, say purple. Dithering is the same except it is applied to pixels. Dithered images appear speckled.

File Types:

BMP (Windows Bitmap): (.bmp) An uncompressed picture used by Windows computers. Found in 24-bit (16 million colors; called "truecolor"), 8-bit (256 colors), and 4-bit (16 colors / black & white). They are very large. If you have an image made in Microsoft paint, ALWAYS save the original copy as a 24-Bit BMP to prevent information/quality/color loss.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format): (.gif) These images are limited to 8-bit, so only 256 colors. GIF's are ideal for images with a limited color range and simple shapes. They also support animation (which equals fun times) and one level of transparency (as opposed to PNG files which can display multiple levels of transparency). Not very good for detailed images with a broad range of colors.
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group): (.jpeg, .jpg) JPEGs are my favorite. 8'D They use lossy compression (you'll learn about that in the next section). They are 24-bit image files that are relatively small. Small amounts of compression do not detract from an image; however, the more compression, the more lost quality. JPEGs lose quality each time they are resaved/edited. So once you save somthing as a jpeg, don't mess with. This is when it's a good idea to save the original work as a different file type. I usually refer to the visible loss of quality like this: "Dang skippy, your image got JPEG'd." All the cool kids do it. Actually I'm not sure. A JPEG'd image is only acceptable in the Beauty Contest where it is crucial to have a low quality image. Anywhere else, visible data loss is frowned upon. I mean, dude, it's UGLY. O'course dithering is pretty ugly too. The moral of this story is, compress your JPEG, but when you start seeing the compression STOP.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics): (.png) PNGs can be 8-bit or 24-bit. 8-bit PNGs tend to resemble GIF files, 24-bit resemble jpegs. PNGs support transparency, which makes them great for images that have transparent backgrounds. PNG's can also be edited without losing quality, unlike JPGs. I would only use a PNG for an image that uses transparency or if it would need to be edited by another user (and a program specific file wasn't handy). If you don't need the transparency or it won't need to be edited, use a GIF or JPG. (transparency does not work in older browsers, but most browsers today support PNG transparency.)
Program Specific Files: These are files that can usually only be opened by a specific program. Take PSDs for example, only Photoshop and some Open Canvas programs can open them. I usually ALWAYS save my pictures as the program specific file (.psd for example), and then make copies in other file types for resizing and web viewing (like .png, .jpg, .gif).

Just saving information as the proper type isn't enough; It's no good if you saved it right but the image still explodes somebody's computer (meaning, the image takes a million years to load and/or freezes said computer). Continue on to the next tutorial to find out more about being a smart saver.

Pseudo-Transparency:
What? Transparent JPEGs? How do I do that? Well I'll tell you.

Okay, so you have an image that doesn't have a background... but you need it to load fast. GIFs make it too ugly, ONG would be good but PNGs are still pretty fat files.... and stupid JPEGs don't do transparency.... OR DO THEY? DUN DUN DUN.
Okay so back to your image. The website you want it on has a blue background. So just give your image the SAME EXACT BACKGROUND COLOR (use hexcodes) and save it as a JPEG. 8D It looks transparent against the same background, but it's actually not! 8D WOW!
Note that this trick only works if there is NO color loss during your compression. P: It will also ONLY work if the background does not change, so sorry, this won't work for things like adoptables. P: also patterned background are difficult to do this with, but it CAN be done.

Optimizing / Compressing and Resizing Images

Hmmm.....
Why does the beauty contest keep saying my file is too big? How to I make it smaller? What do Resize, Optimize, and Compress mean? Why does Zel get mad when I save my images a mega huge 33 MB PNG files? Why does Zel hate horizotal scroll bars?

Basically with images, compression and optimization mean the same thing. You're simply squishing a file down to get your desired amount of quality and size.

Resizing means physically making an image smaller to reduce file size. whether or not resizing reduces quality is subjective. IMHO, images look better smaller to a certain extent. But, you know.. it's all in the eye of the beholder. P:

Okay so remember what I said about Dithering and JPEGs using Lossy compression? Great! Well there are two types of compression methods.
There's Lossy, which is used by JPEG. Lossy compression deletes information based on the human eye's limitations. Basically, the computer figures if you can't see it, then that's a good thing to get rid of while compressing. If you use too much Lossy compression it begcomes visible and makes the image lose quality and look blurry. Lossy copression will get you small files, but low quality. :'D
Next we have Lossless compression. It keeps image quality, but doesn't result in very small files. When something is compressed with lossless compression, the original and compressed data are the same. GIF and PNG files use only lossless compression.

A resizing and compression tutorial is coming soon.

BC Resizing Guide:

Resizing BC entries is never a fun task, so I hope this helps my fellow Bcers out some! o3o
NOTE: although the BC page says the limit is 17 KB, the size limit is ACTUALLY 24.5 KB. C:
(I would say 25 KB, but the computer rounds up so 24.8 KB is 25 but 24.4 KB is still 24, and yes, just .1 of a KB can make a HUGE difference.)
K and KB are interchangeable in case you didn't know; they stand for Kilobyte, but try to use KB.

More tutorials coming soon. I also plan on remaking that one down there. -point- 8|

FOR THOSE WITH PHOTOSHOP:

First off, you'll probably want to make it a JPEG even if it's more pixel oriented art. GIF sometimes won't get you down to 24.5 KB and I personally feel like cropping doesn't show your true work/effort. Remember, not everybody goes to your petpage, so compressing the image successfully is VERY important. For larger pixel works, I recomend resizing them until they lose their pixel quality a look more CGed. Then sart using Lossy compression. When people look at your entry they'll hopefully say "oh what an awesome CGed image, too bad the compression kind of killed, I'll go to the petpa- HOLY CRAP THAT WAS MADE ON PAINT -heart attack and vote-." It's happened to me before. |D; It's a good attention grabber IMHO. x3

Okay, first have your picture done and save it as a Photoshop file, then you may have to get rid of a background and/or crop extra space that doesn't include your pet. o3o this'll make resizing less excruciating. xD

hahah, my picture is reaaaaly big.

then we need to flatten the image. C: uh, do what I do in the picture. |D

Now click 'Save for Web' C:

Now, click the 2-up tab so you can see the original picture versus the compressed version.
make sure you have JPEG selected if your picture is mine, but if it's cell shaded or mspaint-like you may want to use Gif. (underlined in red)
you'll probably have to make your image smaller, so that tab in green near the corner is where you click to do that.
*** Quality (underlined in blue) is what you mess with to compress your file without making the picture smaller, my quality is usually between 20-45, just so you know. |D
try to leave as much quality as you can without exceeding 24.5 KB (you can see the size at the bottom, it's underlined in red.

****** THE ARROW IN THE CIRCLE BUTTON IS WHAT YOU CLICK. CLICK IT TO OPEN THE NEXT WINDOW PLEASE. ****
it is circled in red, and near the top right corner.

now click that arrow button. C: this window should appear:
**TYPE IN 24.5 NOT 20
make sure the first circle thing is selected, then click OK! 8D

and voila, as you can see, my picture is VERY icky, I need to make the actual size smaller.

There, I resized it, and it's ready for the BC.

Saving for Every Occasion

Knowing what file types to use helps. Also, saving the original file helps too. and then we have Zip files... which are freaking sweet.

forgot why I had this section. DURRP!

Uploading Your Image to the Internet

Yay, now that you have your image nicely saved, it's time to UPLOAD! 8D

Okay, uploading...what does that even mean..? Well, it' the opposite of download! Instead of taking something off the internet and putting it on your own computer, you're taking something off your computer and putting it on the internet. Why do that? Well, you want other people to see that pretty picture you just drew don't you? So let' get to it.

In order to get your file onto the World Wide Web, You're going to need to find a site that will host your file.

For images, Imageshack, tinypic, and Photobucket appear to be the most popular.
I use photobucket, so I can explain some tricks for using it:

Coming soon yay lol.

For large files and other files Photobucket doesn't upload, I use Fileden. It's been pretty reliable to me; just have a good pop-up blocker and "pass" all the ads. Px

to be continued. 8|

Important Things!

Warning, this includes profuse amounts of my opinion. P:

uhhhhhhhhh....... I'll thing of this stuff later. |D;

Art Terms and Color Theory

What? Art has theory? 8|

Disclaimer: You aren't gonna get any magic artistic powers from this, sorry. Being an artist means that you must PRACTICE AND WORK HARD. It requires just as much, if not more, studying and hard work as your History or Math class does. If you don't put in the effort, your drawings won't show it, obviously.

ALRIGHT! LETS GO!

Better format, images, and explanations are coming soon. c:

Oh and Lilangel's art tutorial is totally rad, so read that first; click here.

LET'S LEARN THE BASICS! 8D

Let's start off with some art terms shall we? Just by reading and keeping these in your memory banks, not only will you feel like an artist, You'll think like one too! There are a lot of 'em, but they'll help you explain your picture better to other people, and they'll help you when you critique someone else.Don't overuse em though, you'll drive everyone nuts. xD;

TERMS:
These definitions and such were taken from my Art History Starter Kit.

Artwork has two very important parts to it. Form and Content.
When we say Form, we think of the visual aspects of a piece. Form Consists of Line, Color, Texture, Spatial, and Composition.

Line: This is an "element that defines shape." If we say art is linear, we mean that it has a strong emphasis on Line. "Lines can range from angular (straight) to Curvilinear (curvy), Delicate to bold, and/or from Solid to sketchy." They can be real (the outline of an object or something) or imaginary (When your eye runs across a picture in a linear way, it is following an imaginary line).

Color: defined by Hue, Value, and Saturation.
Often, we mistakingly use the word color for Hue instead of using the word Hue itself. Hue consists of the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) and the secondary colors (green, orange, and purple). (and then tertiary colors and so on)
Warm hues are red, orange and yellow, while cool hues are blue, green and purple. Warm colors come towards you, while cool colors recede. c:

Value is the degree of Light and dark a Hue has. In black and white pictures, you only see value, not hue or saturation. Light blue's value is not as deep as Dark Blue's value. A lot of folks use values to shade stuff.

Saturation is how bright or dull something is. What I mean is, Neon signs have more saturation than, say, a sidewalk. Neon yellow has more saturation than Mustard yellow. xD The higher the saturation, the more vivid it'll look. The lower the saturation, the more.. dull it'll look.

Texture: is what your eye thinks something will feel like if you were to touch it. For instance, A picture of a Rabbit could have a soft, fluffy, or furry texture. Rocks would have a hard or graining texture.. stuff like that. "Texture" can refer to both the texture of the actual canvas or paper the picture is drawn on, or it can refer to what the artist is depicting.

Spacial: this includes Space, Volume and Mass.
Space is when the artist depicts recession in a picture. You can create 3-D space on the 2-D drawing plane. If I were to draw a box, there would be space in it, and around it.. unless I put someone in the box, then that space would be taken up. xD
Mass and Volume are pretty much.. 3-D things. so you don't need to worry about those unless you're sculpting or building something lol. xD

Composition: This is how an artist Organizes the picture. It's kinda like how directors place actors on a stage to get an effect. If you draw a character floating with a surreal-like background, that composition will give your picture a "spiritual" look. If you place your character in front of a cave, ferociously fighting a monster that's holding a princess, well, that composition will tell a concrete story (we call that Narrative. c=).

That's the first part, now on to Content.
Content Includes: Subject Matter, Context, Intention/Reception, Style, and Medium.
Subject Matter is what the artist is depicting. xD um duh. lol. A portrait, a picture of a cat, and/or anything in the BC is Representational Art. Paint splattered on a canvas, or something else that you can't tell what it is, is called Non-objective, or Nonrepresentational Art.

Context: this is more for art history, it's basically when and where the work was made, you probably won't need it much. Just know that where you come from and any other factors that define you as a person are going to effect your art.

Intention and Reception: Basically why the picture was made, and how other people take the work.

For example, Usually the intention of a beauty Contest entry is to get votes, and in order to do that, the audience must like it enough to vote for it. (yes I know there is the advertising factor, I'm just focusing on the ART portion of the BC). This also includes the overall meaning of the work in both that artist and the other folks. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT THE AUDIENCE THAT WILL SEE YOUR PICTURE. If you include personal symbolism in your art, don't expect the audience to get it, because they won't. xD if you want your symbolism to be recognized, use universal things like a heart for love or whatever. xD; Don't completely dismiss yourself in order to get your audience to like your picture, otherwise you'll hate your art and that's not a fun time. For example, if you hate anime, but you feel that it would get you more votes in the BC, don't draw it just for that reason. I mean, come on! you hate it! The BC is for fun, and if you don't have fun drawing the picture, it'll turn out like poop. c:
Here's yet another Intention/Reception example:
For the BC, I usually draw Full-body images. I make the character the main focus, so usually the background (if there is one) isn't very detailed. (the detail might take away from the focus on the character) Also, my characters might appear "floating" or barely reacting to the background. This is because I feel that my designs are the strongest factor for winning the BC, so they are my main focus. If I'm drawing a narrative picture for my pet's petpage, then I'm going to have the character interact with the background and such. c: See? if you think about the purpose of your picture before you draw it, it's easy to get the effect you want.

Style: this is REALLY IMPORTANT OMG. XD Style can be individual and uh.. not individual.. |D (no term for this? I guess I made it up in my head..) Your individual style defines you as an artist, just like your appearance and personality defines you has a person. For example, many people draw pictures in some type of Anime or cartoon style, however they each have their own individual styles that separate them from others. Please note that ANTHRO, ZOOMORPH, AND QUAD ARE SUBJECT MATTERS, NOT STYLES. |D;;; Just to get that across. HOW you draw your anthro or quad character is a style (for example you can draw a dog character realistically or in a cartoon way).

A note from myself: If you plan on trying to draw in a certain style like Cubism or Japanese woodblock prints, I'd suggest following the styles EXACTLY for a few tries before imposing your own style on it. c: That way people will recognize it as a style, and not "bad art." xD;; (following it exactly means try to use the same mediums and everything. FOLLOW IT EXACTLY). c:

Lastly, Medium: This is what you use to do your picture. There are Digital and Traditional Mediums. (say Traditional, not hand-drawn, digital art uses hands too!) Digital is on the computer. It ranges form photo-manipulation to digital painting, and everything in between and beyond. Programs are also referred to as mediums. MsPaint, OC, and Photoshop are the digital mediums I use most. c: You can also have Pixel-art and smooth shading stuff, which if I'm not mistaken, is usually called CG. |D Traditional mediums include just about everything that's not digital. xD note that whatever you are working on is also a medium, not just the materials you draw or paint with. Walls, canvas, paper, and even your own skin (lol tattoos!) can be considered mediums.

People often refer to digital pictures as graphics, however Graphic Art refers to Traditional art made using stuff like engravings, woodcuts, etchings, drypoint, metal engravings, lithography.. etc.
don't get them confused!

well there you go! Thinking like an artist yet? Well I've got more. XD;; (lol sorry)

let's move on to some more specific things.

the big Anthro vs. Quad deal

I'll make this short. |D

Animals have no human qualities... well.. as far as science goes. xD But to keep all the animal lovers happy, animals do have emotions. Emotions aren't just a human thing. But talking is.. except for maybe parrots? Well, you get what I'm saying here.

Quad (Quadroped) is basically animals with very few human qualities. Technically speaking they could be classified as anthro, but that's very confusing. So give up on the Technicalities. If it looks mostly animal it's probably quad.

Anthro is short for Anthropomorphic. This is when Animals OR objects are given human-like qualities, such as the ability to speak. However, Anthro has more animal or object qualities than human qualities. Anthro has more human qualities than quad.

Zoomorph is short for Zoomorphic, at least is according to my research. I found that this term as three definitions. XP

a) A human with animal qualities. (my pets are zoomorphic, since they have human anatomy and act the same.)
b) A human that can transform into an animal or creature.
or C) a pattern, usually Celtic knot type things, with animal figures intertwined in it.

Humans are well.. all human. LOL. |D duuuuhh.

so there you go. Now these are just what I've found. someone else's definitions might be different.

Alright, now for some REAL technical stuff, ready to get you're head exploded?

Shading will have it's own section.

Perspective: There are TONS of types of Perspective. the most commonly known are 1-Point, 2-point, and 3-point. (together called linear perspective, and yes, you can have 400-point perspective if you wanted to. xDD) They're complicated, so get a book about them. I AM SERIOUS. Perspective is important for illusionistic pictures.
Other types include Overlapping, Diminution, Vertical, Diagnol, Atmospheric, Divergent, and Intuitive.

in Linear perspective, all the diagnol "lines" (they're called Orthaganols) meet at a common point (vanishing point)on the horizon line. (basically the line that seperates the sky from the ground. xD)
you can look all those terms up because I don't feel like explaining them lol. xD;

Foreground, Middleground, and Background are pretty self explanitory I guess. Everyone knows what a Background is. xD typically the focus of the image is in the middleground, and then the foreground is in front. Most people (including myself) don't include stuff in the foreground, but if you do it draws the viewer into your picture and makes a real snazzy affect. c8

Foreshortening is the thing we all hate. It is an exageration of size created by linear perspective. (even with oodles of math involved, linear perspective isn't accurate, by the way. xP)
basically, if you have a person pointing directly at you, their hand will appear larger than normal, and you won't be able to see most of their arm and stuff. (get what I'm saying? this is hard to explain, sorry!) it helps create dramatic poses and even more depth in a picture. HAPPY HAPPY JOY.

okay I think that's it?

YAY! are we done yet!? NOOOOO~ there's more! x3

The Design Elements! we can forget those can we? of course not!
(if you don't understand what one of these is, look it up, I'm tired of typing. |D;)
**also the design elements and principles vary from book to book a little bit, I'm just using these.

1) Line
2) Shape
3) Texture
4) Proportions/Size
5) Hue
6) Value
7) Direction

BUT WAIT, what abot The Principles of Design?

1) Balance
2) Gradation
3) Rhythm/Repetition
4) Contrast
5) Harmony
6) Unity
7) Emphasis/Dominance

WOW THIS IS A LOT OF CRAZY INFO. Well, you said you wanted to be an artist, and these are the basics.

Okay so with these two lists, think about how each thing is used in art. Most Artwork includes all of them. But it's not necessary. But still... They'rea all at your disposal. Cx

When you look at each element, think about what you can do with it. Will the lines in your picture dominate or will they be imaginary or invisable like in lineless art? Will your picture be balanced, or will it not, and give an unstable effect? Will the hues in your picture be harmonius with each other or will they clash? what about the lines, will they clash? Will the values in your picture contrast harshly, or will they even be there at all?

You see? think about these things helps you get a good compostition, nice effect, and an outstanding picture! c8

well there you go. xD

Now, let's apply it. o=

I'm using the BC as an example.

Okay so the point of the BC is to draw a picture of your pet and let other's vote for it. (yes I know that it's an advertisng contest, but again, I'm just focusing on the art part because it DOES play some role) and you want to WIN right? Duh!

so how do get others to vote for it? Draw a nice picture! but not just any picture, you want to draw a picture loads of folks will vote for!

so first, you want people to be able to SEE it and go WOW I'M VOTING. So what elements and principles should we use? It may differ for everybody, but the elements I focus on are line and value, and a little bit of Hue. The principles I use are Gradation, Contrast, and Emphasis. of course, I do try to use all of the elements and principles, but I focus on those. This is mainly because I want my entry to be eyecatching, and I want my art to say, "LOOK AT MY PET, IT HAS AN AWESOME DESIGN" like I stated above.

okay so Line should be pretty obvious. I typically use black lines, because they define the character and the shapes, which is helpful because my designs include lots of shapes SEPERATE from the character rather than like.. fur patterns. Now I don't make the lines TOO think and massive because then they'll swallow the character. Remember, I focus on my character the most. Next the type of lines I use depends on what type of picture I'm doing. I usually vary the line width of CGed pictures, but keep it equal on MSpaint ones. (usually of course lol there are always exceptions) I dunno why. xD
next is value, I want my shading to be seen, because.. well it helps define My designs, sooo.... I shade pretty dark compared to most I guess. Then there's hue.. I try to make sure all my hues in the picture overall balance nicely, however I make sure that the hues in my pet's design stand out more. All of this "standing out" stuff falls under dominance. Like I said twice before, I want my character to Dominate the picture.
Then Contrast. Contrast is my best friend. I use a full value range, (using black and white, black being the lineart, white bing maybe..I dunno.. the eyes or a shine?) that way it's already pretty eyecatching. Then I make sure there are highlights to match my shading.. stuff Like that. x3 If I have a pale color, I try to contrast it with a bold color. which I guess is balance too. xDDD
and then gradiation is tied in there somehow. xDDD uh yeah see? there IS thought to what I do. lol. |D

so yeah, THERE WE GO. 83

now you try it! 8D

OKAY I'M DONE! 8D

PARTAY! now we can actually start drawing. xDDD

a Mini rant thing on critiqueing, just wanted to add this in.. because... critiques annoy me. |D I'm bad at giving and taking them lol.

okay, so if you are critting someone, usually on the BC boards, the critique-e if that's a word, proabably wants you to fix their FORM, rather than CONTENT. Nothing annoys me more than getting a crit that says "you're pets are too human" or "your design doesn't even look like a neopet!" and trust I get that a lot. =/ I usually want people to help me fix anatomy mistakes and pose issues, and compositions stuff... you know, the Form stuff I talked about at the beginning.
I guess what I'm saying is, if you are asking for a crit be sure to say if you want it on FORM or CONTENT or both. Specify what you need help on. If you are Critiqueing someone else, be sure to think about what they are trying to accomplish and note the things they do Stylisticly. Try to think about the elements and principles they're focusing on. AND NOT EVERY PICTURE NEEDS COLOR. AND NOT EVERY PICTURE NEEDS SHADING. there. xD Not everybody wants to focus on Values and/or Hues. |D

THE END!

Zel's Craptastic Explanation of Color Theory! 8D

Have you ever stared at a picture, wondered, "how did they paint/color that?" and then tried the same thing and get bad results? I definitly have. a lot :C So how do we get better at coloring? Well, color theory can help us. (and we can apply it to designs too, not just painting/coloring.)

so let's take a look at our hues:

Primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. c: as long as you have these, you can make ANY color you want out of them.
Secondary colors: orange, green, and purple. we get these by adding even amounts of two primary colors
Tertiary colors: red-orange, blue-violet, yellow-green, and the like. They are the colors inbetween the secondaries. c:

Tints: you get these by adding white to a hue. c:
Shades: you get these by adding black to a hue.
Tones: and you get these by adding grey to a hue. c:

Neutral Grays are combinations of black and white.
(There are also warm grays and cool grays.)

Chromatic Grays:
Created by mixing two compliments and adding white. They appear to have a color to them, like a greenish grey, a redish gray, etc. They add flavor to a black and white image. I've always been told to always use cromatic grays instead of neutrals, but I feel like ever color has its place; use 'em where you think they'll do good.

Intesity/Chroma: like saturation, refers to the brightness or dullness of a color. c:

Compound Colors: Colors that include mixtures of all the primaries. These are colors like browns, tans, and earth tones.

Complementary colors: These are colors that are opposite to each other. Red's compliment is green, blue's compliment is orange, yellow's is purple, blue-green's is yellow-orange, get it?
to make a hue appear "darker" just add some of its complement!

Analogous colors: colors that are beside each other. c: orange, red-orange, and yellow-orange are analogues.

Warm colors (also known as Active or Agressive) come forward, cool colors (also known as Passice or receding) recede.

Split Complements: to get a split complement, take a hues's compliment, and use the two hues beside it. For example: Yellow, blue-violet, and red-violet are Split complements.

Diad: Diads are simply hues that are one hue away from eachother. Blue-green and blue-violet are Diads.

Triad: three colors that are equally spaced from eachother. Red, blue, and yellow form a triad on the color wheel.

Tetrad: contrast of four or more colors, they can make rectangle shapes and square shapes. the rectangle ones can also be called double complentaries.

alright, you know what everything is now, so let's do some designing! c8

I'll be using Aru's lineart. x3

okay so.... color combinations. c|
let's start off with Primary:

okay.. ew. this is what I'd like to call the "birthday party effect." you can decide whether you like it or not, but this is definately not a combination I like to see. |D;;

okay Primaries were a flop, what about secondaries?

getting better, but still. xD; let's keep trying:

now some tertiaries:

well... let's just keep going.. xD;;

how about a complementary scheme:

hmmm.... pretty decent. xD let's try something different though..

Analogous! these are pretty cool. c:

and what about mono-chromatic schemes?

okay... these schemes are all very bright and bold, they kind of hurt. Let's give them some variety.

alright let's try again. c: let's use a complementary scheme:
increase the value (lighten) of the yellow body, decrease (darken) the value of the blue.

desaturate and lighten the "hair

There we go, that's better isn't it? c: try it with other schemes, like primaries or analogous! You can even do tetrads and split complementaries.

So how does Zel design characters? What kind of thought processes does she use?

well, first I grab some lineart, and fill in just values:

then I use common sense. For Aru, he was already a glowing hissi, and those are green, so I wanted a color scheme that was mainly green.
hmm, Analogous or mono-chromatic? I picked monochromatic.

then I wanted a desaturated look because I love desaturated colors. xD; I also darkened up the values.

and that's Aru. c:
I decided his eyes should be red because that's green's complement. The red offers an accent. c:

Remember skintones and earthtones too! the best way to come up with design colors is to just make a lot of different color palettes~ c8 use complementary colors for contrast and emphasis. Be sure to think about what colors you want to be dominant in your scheme, what colors are sub-dominant, and what accent you want.

Alright, so how do we COLOR with this? I'm making that tutorial right now, and it'll probably be in the shading section. :P
