Welcome to Haunted
Fantastic...just fantastic. You ignored the tour guide, you laughed at your pets' pleas to return to the main path, and insisted that you knew a shortcut to the carnival of terror. Really good. Aren't you glad you didn't bring that map of the Haunted Woods now? You're lost! Yup, you've wandered out of the tourist areas of the Woods and now you've got no idea where you are. But hey, you're safe right?
Wrong! A Werelupe bounds out of nowhere and knocks you over, howling wildly into the night. She doesn't linger, though, and rather than rip you to shreds, she tears off into the night, leaving you staring up at a rather odd sign. You stand, shaking, to read it, but find it so weathered that the only word you can decipher is Haunted, how odd. A woman appears by your side as you're still squinting curiously at the sign. You are most welcome, honoured guest, to Haunted, a directory of Neopia's Spookiest Denizens. I am Elphie, and I will be your guide this evening...-she smirks- I highly suggest you not ignore me.

Haunted began as my endeavor to achieve two things—a pet page coded from scratch entirely by me, and to have a place to show off all my deliciously spooky pets. And it's been a whirlwind of insanity trying to keep up with it ever since. I never thought that it would attain as much popularity as it has, with such minimal advertisement—and I hope it only continues to grow on the Neopian population.
As of right now, Haunted is not only a directory for all of Neopia's spookiest, it is also a guide to many of the spooky and haunted dealings all around Neopia—especially the Haunted Woods. So may I ask you…are you Haunted?

Once a month we will choose two spooks that truly exemplify all that is Haunted. One spook will be a "pure spook" while the other will be a "character spook." This will give some of our spooky companions who are haunted in nature but not in color a chance to be showcased! These spooks truly have gone above and beyond and we feel the utmost honor in tributing them!
Pure Spook Winner |
 Reaux (Trouro)
Reaux (given name Trouro) is currently being featured to show off our featured pet system. He is considered to be Elphie's first pet. He was adopted from the pound as a Pink Shoyru, and in time morphed into a Krawk, then painted many colors until he settled on Ghost. He is a voodoo spirit of mischief, and you should be wary when anywhere near his home or protected swamp. Reaux's petpet, Pierrot, is a frighteningly cunning snowbunny who loves to torment all those around him. For Reaux's full description, see his pet lookup. (This is an example blurb, please feel free to write however you feel appropriate!) |
Character Spook Winner |
 Tawney
Tawney is currently being featured to show off our featured pet system. She was adopted by Elphie from a wonderful player named Solo. Tawney is the sister of Tilluwen and Tathian Teague, and a slightly bitter spirit. Her untimely departure from the living caused her much grief, and bound her to Neopia in ways few Neopets have ever been. She is currently being zapped in hopes of becoming a Lutari. Wish us luck! For Tawney's full description, see her pet lookup. (This is an example blurb, please feel free to write however you feel appropriate!)

Featuring Your Spook |
Would you like to submit your spooky pet to be featured here at Haunted? Well it's really rather simple. All you need to do is neomail Elphie with the following form filled out *ONE pet per month:
Pet's Name: Pet's Nickname: Pet's Colour: Blurb About Pet: |
Once you've done that, your pet will be automatically sorted into one of the two feature categories--Pure Spook or Character Spook. Pure Spooks are the types of pets that can be listed in the directory. They are painted either Halloween, Ghost, Mutant, Zombie, or Transparent. It's also preferable that they have a spooky type of personality. Character Spooks are the types of pets we normally will not allow in the directory for various reasons. These pets can be painted any color, but have a truly spooky personality, character design, or customization. Once a month, I will take all the submissions from each category and run through them with a neofriend or two, and we will choose the winners. The winners will be featured here for a full month, and will be permitted to use the Haunted: Featured Pet trophy on their lookup. There is no neopoint, neocash, or item prize. This is purely for bragging rights. :P

The truly haunted can find spookiness in any part of Neopia, from the sands of the Lost Desert to the fluffy pink clouds of Faerieland. But there are a few places in Neopia that are truly haunted. These areas are practically dedicated to our spookiest denizens, and promise a safe haven for them--while promising no such thing for visitors. -grins- Luckily, like all Neopian worlds, these places offer a multitude of entertainment, quest opportunities, and exotic wares--not to mention the truly terrifying tourist traps.

Haunted Woods: The number one haunted hotspot is naturally the Haunted Woods. No place else in Neopia harbors more terror, fear, and downright spookiness. Once you find your way in, you may never find your way out...but you may not mind so much. For those spooky at heart, it is often called home.
Quest Opportunities: The Haunted Woods offers many quest opportunities for you to choose from, but don't think these creatures of the night will make it easy for you. You can pick up a quest from Edna at her tower, for instance. She will request one or more items to complete her reagents list for a particular spell or potion. These items may not come cheap, and her rewards may not always be worth it--but you may just win an avatar. It's up to you to decide whether her requests are worth your money. Or you could pick up a quest from the Brain Tree, possibly Neopia's oldest living creature. He requires knowledge of when and where a particular Neopet has died. Don't go running to the Neopian Times for an obituary, though, oh no! This knowledge can only be found through completing a quest for the Esophagor! The Esophagor will always request food items (for he is always hungry). Upon completing his quest, you'll receive the answer in return, and will be able to complete the Brain Tree's request. If you aren't participating in one of the Brain Tree's quests, he will often give you a random spooky item of random rarity. On occasion it can be fairly profitable!
Shop Opportunities: Take a quick look around and you'll find the Spooky Petpet Shop where you can purchase one of the many amazing petpets that are found in the surrounding woods. These creatures are both creepy and cute--and sometimes downright disgusting. Be wary of Meepits! There is also the Haunted Marketplace, a seemingly disconsolate place simply bustling with business. Here you can browse through the many user-based shops that can be found in the Haunted Woods.
Tourist Traps: The Haunted Woods has by far the most tourist traps out of any other Neopian world. The reasons behind this are purely speculation and rumor, of course. -shifty eyes- Just take a walk down some of the poorly lit pathways and you will quickly find an interesting reason to stop and linger. Places such as the Haunted House and Castle of Eliv Thade have been known to attract hundreds of sightseers a day. It's uncertain whether all of them found their way out...There are also many other sites of interest, such as the Game Graveyard and the -invalid_words- Stone Dome. Don't be too afraid to venture out on your own...you never know what you may find.

Deserted Fairgrounds: The Deserted Fairgrounds are, in fact, a tourist trap of the Haunted Woods...but because it's such a large and entertaining place to explore, it really has become its own hotspot! The Deserted Fairground is simply filled with fun--and frustrating--things to do. Just be careful not to run afoul of any robo-Chia clowns.
Shop Opportunities: There are three incredible spooky stores that reside in the Desert Fairgrounds. Take a walk past the Spooky Foods stand, and you'll soon find mouth watering for some Spooky Gooplecream or an Almost Gummy Rat. Duck into the dark curtains of the Spooky Furniture tent, and you'll discover all you need to turn your regular neohouse into a haunted neohome. And finally, if you can gather the courage, take a step into the fire-bright Haunted Weaponry shop for your spookiest weaponry available--I don't know many who'd want to cross someone with a Bubbling Cauldron OF DOOM.
Tourist Traps: But you said the Deserted Fairground was a tourist trap itself? That's right, so it follows there must be a reason...and that's because the Deserted Fairgrounds offers the most entertainment in all the Haunted Woods. You'll find tons of carnival games here, such as Test Your Strength, Wheel of Misfortune, Cork Gun Gallery, Bagatelle, and Coconut Shy. You can also try your luck at the scratchcards, or take a ride in the Carnival of Terror.

Neovia: Neovia is the most recently discovered area of the Haunted Woods, and so like the Deserted Fairground is a potential tourist trap of the Haunted Woods itself. However the shopping opportunities, and the history behind this sleepy town make it truly unique. Neovia was discovered during the course of the Tale of Woe plot, and has a very...interesting...past.
Shop Opportunities: While entertainment is lacking in Neovia, shopping is not! In Neovia you will find a number of quaint, old-fashioned stores owned by quaint, old-fashioned Neopets. Don't let that fool you, though, these small shops are the upper-crustiest of upper-crusties, and don't you forget it! For your shopping pleasure you'll find The Crumpetmonger, the town bakery; Chesterdrawers' Antiques, the furniture store; the Neovian Printing Press, a dual bookstore and printing press; Prigpants & Swolthy Tailors, the local tailors. You may also find a truly unique shop that can only be accessed if your account is old enough...the Almost Abandoned Attic.

Just because we're spooks, ghosties, and ghouls doesn't mean we can't enjoy a good time just like everybody else. And the same holds true for games! You'd be surprised at how many games are dedicated to our favourite creatures in all of Neopia. For the sake of keeping things neat and easier to load, we will only list a few of the exemplary Haunted games, but rest assured there are many out there! To see all the Haunted Woods based games on Neopets, click here!

Ghost Bopper: Okay, so perhaps this isn't the most ghost-friendly game out there, but it's definitely spooky, and definitely fun! Ghostie petpets will begin to rise from their graves, and you have to whack them back in before they run loose!
Game Description: Halloween makes the spirits of ghost Petpets restless in their graves. Whack them down before they can rise and wreak spooky havoc upon all Neopia!
Haunted Shootery: How could we not showcase a game with our very name in the title? The Haunted Shootery is a fantastic game that feels just like those old carnival shooteries. You have to have a steady aim and keen eye to keep up with this game!
Game Description: As you walk through the Haunted Woods, you notice a gypsy beckoning to you. His wagon is a little far off from the rest of the gypsy camp, but he looks friendly, so you approach.
Come, see the tale of Gilly," he says, and then you realize that his wagon isn't just a regular gypsy wagon at all. The sides open to reveal a shooting gallery, full of moving targets, that brings the Haunted Woods to life with a grinding of gears and a whistle of steam.
The gypsy pushes a cork gun into your hand and tells you to aim for the targets. You line up one of them in your crosshairs and fire...

Carnival of Terror: True to its name this carnival is truly terrifying. This place is completely overrun by robotic clown Chias, and they're out to get YOU! You must keep yourself alive by shooting the robots to smithereens and shooting pies in midair to prevent from being hit by them. Luckily someone's looking out for you, because there's the occasional ammo, health, and time drops to keep you going. If you get a high enough score, you may even get a nifty avatar!
Game Description: There once was a carnival so amazing that Neopians from all around would flock in droves to see it. Visitors were enchanted by the carnival's colourful shows and spectacular attractions. The fun came to an end, though, on the day that the nefarious Dr. Sloth sent an invasion of robot Chia clowns to take over the carnival and then use it to capture all of Neopia! They've already infiltrated the once joyful carnival, but with your help, their reign of mechanised terror can come to an end!

Before you take your leave of us, perhaps you'd like to entertain the idea of bringing a Spooky pet into your home, or perhaps turning one of your existing pets into a Haunted horror. Well, we've got some tips and facts for you so you'll know just how to do that.
Painting: For Halloween, Ghost, Zombie, and Transparent varieties, the simplest and "quickest" way to achieve a Haunted look is to paint a pet with an appropriate paint brush. Paint brush prices fluctuate, however, so this may not be the cheapest route to a Spooky.
Morphing: Morphing is another simple, straight-forward way to get your pet that Spooky look you desire. Potions have a great range in price, from ten-thousand to several million, depending on pet, colour, and item rarity. Transmogrification Potions are unique in that they give your pet a colour only available from the potion itself: mutant! So if you're looking for a mutant pet, you'll need to pick up a Transmogrification Potion of that pet's species. You will also get the Mutant JubJub avatar by using any Transmogrification Potion on your pet.
Lab Ray: The lab ray is a very popular way to get many different colours, including Halloween, Ghost, Mutant, Zombie, and Transparent. All five colours are available via lab ray, and considering the hefty price attached to the Zombie Paint Brush, it is the most popular way to achieve that corpse-like colour. The lab ray is only open to those who complete a set of the Secret Laboratory Map. There are nine pieces total, and each piece is an item--which means they can be stolen via random event, so it's best to keep them in your SDB until you've got the full set. Once you've obtained a full set, simply visit the treasure map page and submit your completed map, and you will be given lab map access.
Fountain Faerie: A Fountain Faerie Quest, also known as FFQ, is a rare and coveted thing. If you are lucky enough to be visited by the Fountain Faerie and complete her quest, she will allow you to paint your pet almost any colour possible in the game, including Halloween, Ghost, Mutant, Zombie, and Transparent. To get such a quest is extremely rare, though, and be absolutely certain of your choice, you may never get another! You will also not get the Mutant JubJub avatar from painting your pet Mutant with an FFQ.

Dec. 29th, 2011 -- Fixed some small things, removed some affiliates that were no longer what they were supposed to link to. I'm going to be updating the layout soon, so expect another update within the next month or so! :)
April 15th, 2011 -- Fixed the text area issue on our link back buttons today. Also added another category to my contact section for those interested in the Haunted Guild. It's just started so please wait until I've got the information page up to submit applications. :)
Sept. 24th, 2010 -- Updated the main page to reflect the addition of Transparent pets to our ranks. I also updated the affiliates section here since I had been adding them to the directory page but not this one. Doh!
Aug. 20th, 2010 -- Welcome to the new and improved Haunted! As I'm sure you can see, I've recoded the entire directory. We are now divided into three different pages--the about page, a list of all the petpets that are spooky/can be painted spooky, and the actual directory itself. This will give us more space to play with, along with help with slow loading times (and to keep my browser from freezing EVERY time I try to update the directory, UGH!). Here on the about page, the only updates you will see from now on will be about this specific page. So any changes to this specific page will be posted here, while any updates to the other pages will be noted on those pages themselves. I hope you'll find this version of Haunted more streamlined, easier to navigate, and even more enjoyable than before!
