Pet Trading Rule Guide

The unofficial guide to TNT's everchanging rules.

Welcome

Editorial #367

Do you really think that people read the rules? :) ~ieva77
It's more of a desperate hope, really...

This page is designed to show the known "rules" of trading Neopets, by means of perusing the Neopian Times Editorial.

There is no official list of rules for trading Neopets, so this is a basic guide for new (and old) users with questions about the rules.

While reading, keep in mind that these are not official rules and TNT can change them at any time, for any reason.

This page is a reference, not a set-in-stone word of law.

known rules

Rules That Have Not Changed

1) One Neopet may only be traded for one other Neopet. References

2) Neopets may not be traded for items/NP/NC, nor can things like petpets/petpetpets (or custom Battledome training) be included as part of the trade. References

3) You may only trade a Neopet belonging to yourself. Ref. Editorial #471

4) You may only advertise a pet belonging to you. Ref. Editorial #471

5) The Pound is fair game. Once a pet is in the pound, NO ONE has any claim on it. Ref. Editorial #434

6) Owners adopting out pets are NOT allowed to require applicants to make extreme applications. Ref. Editorial #477

7) Adoption Agencies ARE allowed; Trading Agencies are NOT allowed. Ref. Editorial #477

Rules That Have Recently Changed / Ambiguous Areas

Current Status, updated 02/24/11

1) Customs are allowed, but at the risk of the person doing the custom; the person getting the custom may back out at any time, even after the pet is painted. Ref. Editorial #434

Neomail Calicolupe if you have a question!

Common Etiquette

Not required, but appreciated.

1) Be polite and courteous to others.

2) Only offer your pet for a pet you'd accept.

3) Complete all trades (including customs) in the time decided between both traders. Don't beat around the bush.

4) If you have "considered" several offers, let them know when you accept another offer. They'd rather know than keep waiting.

5) "Long-shot" offers are typically not appreciated. (Even TNT has said that they'd raise a brow at you trading your blue Lupe for a royal Acara. Ref. Editorial #470)

6) If a pet has "NOT UP FOR TRADE" plastered all over their look up, do not offer your pets in trade for it.

7) Do not initiate a transfer before discussing a trade with the person in question.

8) Suggestions would be great!

An excellent guide to pet trading etiquette can be found here (Scroll halfway down and click to "Pet Trading Etiquette").

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the Editorials listed in reverse order?
The most recent Editorial is the current "rule" that we follow, and overrules any previous Editorials. Ref. Editorial #478.

Can I submit a ticket that I sent to TNT, and TNT's response about my pet trade?
I'd prefer not using tickets from TNT, because TNT can allow/disallow different things for different people, based on age of account/warnings/etc.

Can I be your affiliate?
I won't call you as such, but I'm happy to link back to you if you link to me, and your site has something to do with trading/adopting/lending/etc pets! :D

Editorial #483

Hi, TNT! Hypothetical situation here involving two good imaginary friends of mine, Sally and Bob. Sally gets a Fountain Faerie Quest. She already has all of her dream Neopets, however, so she has no need for it. Bob has never received a FFQ before and Sally wants to donate her FFQ to Bob as a gift. Would it be allowed for Bob to send his Neopet to Sally's account, where Sally would use her FFQ on Bob's Neopet and then transfer it back to Bob? I'm getting confused about this because it isn't allowed with the Lab Ray, so I can't work out if it would be allowed with a FFQ. Please let me know! ~zemzii While giving away your hard-earned lab zap or FFQ pass is a nice gesture, we don't allow this because Bob should be earning his own Lab Map. Bob should complete his own FFQ (if he were lucky enough to receive one) in order to get a pass to the fountain. First and foremost, Neopets is a game. Bob should be using his own progress in the game to achieve goals and reap the benefits, not someone else's.

Editorial #477

Hi, TNT! I've noticed that some members on the Pound Chat stopped advertising other people's Neopets being up for trade without them there for a little while (sadly, it seems to have started again) and when I asked about this I was directed to an old Editorial. I was wondering: is it against the rules to advertise someone else's Neopet as being up for adoption? Obviously you would get permission first, but since you said it wasn't okay for trading I was wondering about adopting. Is it not okay at all, or okay in some situations? Like, if I list someone else's Neopet in my hypothetical agency of UFA Neopets, or if I link to someone else's agency? Thanks! ~luv_my_pets_666
Adoption agencies are still fine, as long as there are no extreme application processes going on. If you have permission from a player to assist in adopting out their Neopet, then it's fine to post about it. The reason we allow this is that the person seeking the Neopet has nothing much to lose, except for a reasonable amount of time and effort spent explaining why they would be a good owner to the Neopet.

Editorial #455

Hi, TNT. I think I messed up (because I do that sometimes). I entered my Usul in the Style Showdown's Masked in Mystery category. A couple of days later I was offered a lovely Neopet for adoption (her name is Maria_VonTrapp; how could I say no?). Anyway, as I already had four Neopets, I decided to send my Usul to my side account, completely forgetting that I had entered her into the competition. Is she disqualified now? Do I need to bring her back to my main account? It never even crossed my mind when I transferred her. Help me! Thank you. ~orlybloompet
Yes and yes. We disqualify any Neopet whose owner has changed since being entered into the showdown. So, if you still want her to have a chance, you should move your Usul back to your main until the finalists for that particular category are announced.

Editorial #431

Hey TNT, I have a question that I don't think has been covered here. I know you have the maximum side account number set at five. However, here's what I've been thinking about. What if I don't like the usernames I thought up? Would it be okay if I were to create five new side accounts and move the Neopets from my originals to these new ones and then self-freeze the other accounts that I no longer wanted? ~ ashluvscats2
You are more than welcome to create new accounts and transfer your Neopets to those accounts as long as you deactivate your old accounts to remain at or under the maximum.

Editorial #430

I have accidentally sent a Neopet to a user that doesn't exist! I meant to send it to another person but typed in their username wrong! Please help! I don't want my Neopet floating in VirtuSpace! ~ sprinkla
Don't worry. Your Neopet will only be taking a brief vacation into VirtuSpace. If you accidentally send your Neopet to a player that doesn't exist, it will return to your account within four days.

Editorial #417

This is no longer true--if you transfer a pet to another account, its fishing level goes to 0. If you transfer it back to the original account, its fishing level is restored.
I recently read in the most recent Editorial that Neopets lose their fishing skill when transferred to another account. What if you get the Neopet back onto the original account (the one with the high fishing skill)? Will it still have its high fishing skill? ~sareko
Nope. Once a Neopet leaves an account its fishing skill is gone. This was done as the result of players rotating their Neopets through accounts to level up fishing faster than intended.

Editorial #410

Hi, I was wondering if you could clear up this problem that I encountered while trying to trade Neopets with someone. In my excitement at already having gotten my new Neopet on my main account, I switched to my side and sent my Draik to its new owner. However, in my haste I hadn't noticed that I had put in the wrong username. Therefore, the Draik went to a non-existent account. Someone then created an account with this name in hopes of being able to adopt the Draik. Draiks aren't available for adoption if you're under 4 months, though. However, since the transfer was sent before the account was created, would they have been able to accept the transfer? I'm asking because, according to the owner of the account, it was giving them the option to accept. ~crazy4csi85222
Well... that is a pretty crazy situation. We'll look into seeing if we can block Neopets from being sent to accounts that are existence-challenged, heh. For future reference, though, if you do accidentally send a Neopet to an account that hasn't been created, it'd be best not to go on the boards and say, "Ack! I just sent my Neopet to *some username* instead of..." to avoid people trying to take advantage of your mistake. We're not sure if that's what happened in this case, but we can imagine it happening.

Editorial #401

Dear TNT, I started a game of NeoQuest I some time ago because I wanted to get the "Wise and Powerful" avatar. However, now that I've got it, I thought that I might as well go for the trophy... and maybe the next one... and maybe, just maybe the last one, too. The thing is: I use my Lab Neopet as my active one, so it's his NQ game, too. Will I have to keep my lab rat all the time if I ever want the gold trophy, or would I have to start over completely if I transfer it or send my Neopet to The Pound? Also, what about lending? Will my Neopet still have the same saved game if I get it back? Thanks! ~raznac
NeoQuest games are saved to your Neopet, so yes, you will have to keep your lab Neopet around if you're planning on finishing the game. As far as we can tell, though, lending your Neopet won't interrupt your game unless the person who you lend the Neopet to decides to restart it.

Editorial #382

Hey TNT, I can't really say that you rock right now. I just found out that my Neopet, which I transferred to my side account, lost its fishing skill! She used to have a fishing skill of 80, but now it shows up as zero! Does this have something to do with the transfer, and if so, why? That just seems really mean, because I worked for months to get to that fishing skill! ~shadin_the_flame
Neopets lose their fishing skill when they are transferred or go through the Pound. This was enacted to prevent a certain type of abuse that was occurring previous to this change going into effect. Please, only dedicate the time to upping fishing skills on Neopets that you plan on having in your account for a very long time!

Editorial #370

Erm... say we accidentally typed a username wrong when we were transferring and that person hasn't been seen in a long time on Neopets. Is there any way to back out of the transfer? If not, does the Neopet go back to you, or does he/she go to the Pound? ~babyspirt108
As long as you keep the spot empty for its return, your Neopet should come bounding back to your account in a couple of days. However, if you fill up with four Neopets before then, the poor thing will be redirected to the Pound.

Editorial #363

Hi. Why aren't we allowed to transfer Neopets as many times as we want in a month? Will we ever get more than one Neopet transfer a month (like two in and two out a month)? ~redhot_too
Because it breeds abuse of the system, which (as you can see from the question above) has a lot of room to be abused. We are planning on upping the total number of allotted transfers per month, though.

Editorial #363

I was asked today if I could take a friend's Neopet in trade, zap it for her at the Lab Ray, then trade it back to her. I don't mind, but I don't want to do anything that would result in any of my accounts being frozen. Could you, O' Wise TNT, shed some light on how you all would feel about this, since trading is now perfectly fine and some people are most likely already doing this? I would not accept anything in return for doing this for her. I would just zap her Neopet and let the ray have its way until she was happy with the results, then trade the Neopet back to her. ~tears_ofan_angel
We think this is a bit of an abuse of the transfer service and request that people not use it for this purpose, as this has not been allowed in the past, either.

Edtorial #363

Please help me! :( I accidentally transferred my Neopet to a user who does not exist! I spelled the name wrong. Is there any way to get it back? I can't adopt poor Neopets from The Pound anymore... ~iciclernia
Oh dear... never fear, though. Since the person doesn't exist to accept the transfer, your Neopet will be heading back to you in a few days. It may be a little confused, but otherwise unharmed.

Editorial #362

Hi and thanks for the Neopet transferring options. I'm really excited about them, but one thing has been giving me Sneezles and I really hope you can help me! I would just like to know whether, if you transfer a Neopet that still has its original artwork and has not been switched over to the new customized art work, will it automatically be switched to the new art work or will it stay the same if you transfer it to another account? That is to say, will it still be in its original old artwork form in the new account that it goes to? Did that make sense? I actually think I'm breaking out into NeoPox with worry. Will transferring an old Neopet change how it looks? My Cybunny, for example, won't suddenly be different? *gets on knees and begs* Pleasssse inform us, ye wise ones of Neopia! ~weavingsilver
Neopets will not automatically convert to new artwork if you transfer them. However, once it is in the hands of another person, they will have the power to convert them, so do keep that in mind.

Editorial #350

If you reject a transfer, does that still use your transfer for that month? Today a person I've never met before offered me a Neopet I didn't even want, without consulting me first -- I was just wondering if, by rejecting that, my transfer was still used? As in, I can't receive another Neopet this month? :/ I would also like to know the same for if I were the one sending the Neopet and it got rejected... thanks so much for your awesome work! ~pteri
We talked to the fancy programmer of the transfer system, and here's what he said:
If you are offered a direct transfer, no one else can offer you a direct transfer. If you reject the transfer, nothing is counted against you and you are free to be offered other transfers right away.
If you make a direct transfer offer, that counts as your direct transfer offer for the month and you will need to wait until next month to make another direct transfer offer, even if the offer is eventually rejected.

Editorial #350

Hey TNT, how are you? :3 Mmmmmk, so say I don't use my transfer for June. Would I have two for July, or just the July transfer? Thanks. :] nomnomnom. ~mydeadlyescape
No, transfers do not roll over into the next month.

Editorial #347

Okay, so here is another question from me: I really need some help with this new trading thing. =P If someone sends me a Neopet through the transfer option and I reject the Neopet, will I have used my transfer for that month? ~exsploding
Yes, that will use your transfer for that month. This is explained in the Complete Rules section at the bottom of the transfer page.

Editorial #342

I was trying to transfer a Neopet, but I accidentally typed in the wrong user, and the user hasn't signed on for days. I wanted to adopt a Neopet, but now I can't. I was just wondering when I would just get the Neopet back, and then be able to give it to the right user. Thanks, you guys at TNT rule so much you deserve a carrot (not a cookie, because too many people give you cookies and you might have to go on a diet x.X). Oh, and please leave my name out. :D ~[username removed]
Woops! We figured this was bound to happen, so we have set it so that if the person does not accept the transfer within 3 days, the Neopet will be returned to you. However, that will be your one Neopet transfer (send) for the month.

Editorial #342

Okay, I know I already submitted a question once today, but I really need both of these answered. I know that, once you abandon an ice Bori, it turns blue. If I were to transfer mine, would it still turn blue or stay ice? ~cooltaylor432
Transferring your ice Bori will not turn it blue. For the other issue you wrote to us about, please send a bug report here if you completed the Altador Plot but did not receive a trophy/avatar.

Editorial #341

Okay, first off, please thank everyone that helped get the Pound up for me! I'm SO glad it's back. Now for my question: I want to transfer my Neopets from one of my other accounts to this account, but two of them are still using the old art from before you changed how the Neopets look. I want to know if, when I transfer them, will they stay with the old art, or will they be changed to the new art? I couldn't find anything about this when I looked through the Pound FAQ and I want to know before I transfer. If they get to keep their old artwork, give the people that helped with the Pound pancakes. ;D Thanks a bunch! ~fromidam
Neopets featuring old art will NOT be automatically converted if they are transferred. However, once they are in the hands of their new owner, that player will have the option of permanently converting them. So if you do not want your Neopet to be converted we suggest being careful with the lending out of an unconverted Neopet unless you're willing to risk this happening. Once a Neopet is converted it cannot be changed back, even if it is someone else who did it.

Editorial #341

Thanks so much TNT for getting the Pound back up. I love the transfer feature! My question is about Lutaris. I know that, in the past, if we tried to abandon a Lutari it would run away. Are we able to transfer Lutaris now? ~daidriap
No, Lutaris cannot be abandoned without running away, and they will not allow themselves to be transferred. Sheesh! They are such willful Neopets, aren't they?

Editorial #341

Let's say you use the transfer option to receive a Neopet that's being lent to you. How long will it be before you can use the transfer option to give it back? There appears to be a lag of a certain number of days. ~indulgences
It is currently set to once a month, but we soon hope to have it set to once per day.

Editorial #341

Dear TNT, first of all - congratulations on getting the Pound working! The new transfer option is great, and I was really looking forward to it: I thought that, by using it, I could give away the clothing I had accumulated in my closet from Lab Ray zaps. As things turned out, though, it looks like these items will be gathering dust forever, as I cannot donate or even *sob* discard them... so why is it not possible to transfer Neopets with paint brush clothes from colours other than the one the Neopet is currently painted, and might you reconsider this in the future? ~max_frei
We put a lot of thought into the Pound, especially with regard to transferring paint brush clothing. We decided that it just wouldn't be right for players to transfer around Neopets that had been painted several times, as this would just be too much of a cheat to get free paint brush clothing. It was a tough decision to even allow the paint brush clothing of what it was currently painted as to be allowed to be passed on to another player. :-/

Editorial #341

A lot of people have been getting confused with the new transfer system as of May 1st. I understand that the Pound being back is a brand new thing, but I was just wondering (since it's not stated anywhere in the FAQ): can you transfer a Neopet to another account (say, a side) every 30 days, or literally every month, like the monthly freebies/game resets? Thank you for answering, if you do. :) ~im_a_lostprophet
The FAQ says that you can transfer a Neopet every month. By this, we mean every calendar month. So, if you transferred a Neopet on April 30th, you could transfer another Neopet in early May.

Combined List

Editorial #476

This has been bothering me for a long, long time. In past Editorials you've said that trading Neopets shouldn't involve paint brushes, Neopoints, etc. So now my question: is offering a custom against the rules? I know things such as royal customs or unlimited customs are really popular, but since paint brushes are used... I would really appreciate if you cleared this up, thanks! ^_^ (Please remove my username.) ~username removed
As long as the painting is done before the trade, that's fine. No items / Neopoints / additional Neopets can be traded along with the Neopet.

Editorial #475

The new Holiday Dream Pet Giveaway is awesome! I am wondering, however, how you would feel if someone asked for a rare Neopet like a Chocolate Draik with the intention of trading it for their true dream Neopet (like an Unconverted Neopet that you couldn't win in the giveaway). I didn't see any rules forbidding this, and it is still a way for someone to get their dream Neopet. What would you think about that? (Besides all the nasty Neomail that someone who did that would probably get - and please leave my username out!) ~username removed
Alas, we'd be delighted and prefer that the player receiving the Neopet would love and adore it for the rest of their days, but as we have no rules against 1:1 Neopet trading, we can't really do anything about it. D:

Editorial #471

Person A recently got frozen for scamming after advertising Person B's Neopet for trade. B said that they hadn't given A permission to advertise, but A was sure that they had gotten permission. This situation aside, I'd like to know if there's been a rule change. Are we forbidden from advertising Neopets we don't actually own? Thanks for the clarification, and please leave out my name! ~username removed
Being allowed to advertise for other people just opens up way too much room for possible scams. Please only advertise for your own Neopets using your own main / side accounts.

Editorial #470

I'll get to the point real fast: if I'm on the Pound Chat, am I allowed to make a topic that pretty much says "Basic Neopet with aged zapped Snowbunny UFT! (Get Snowbunny avatar!)"? From what I see, there are two conflicting points. 1. No Neopoint profit can be made, but 2. It "sort of" breaks the spirit of trading a Neopet for an item instead of a Neopet for a Neopet. Ambiguous, sort of, so I figured I'd ask. xD ~tealnova_dragon
Not ambiguous to us. You would be attempting to trade a Neopet for an avatar / Petpet. Neopets can ONLY be traded for another Neopet. Rest assured that, if we see a plain blue Lupe being traded for a royal Acara, we're going to know something is up and investigate.

Editorial #470

Hey, TNT! *throws cookie* Let's say you have a Neopet named "neopets" for trade. The n is not capitalized, but you have a piece of code to make it appear capitalized on your User Lookup and Pet Lookup (yet don't tell anyone that when advertising). If a trade has gone through and the new owner then finds out that the n was never capitalized, is that reportable? ~_babyxdoll
We're going to say that, yes, it's reportable on this one, as it's similar to trying to trick someone with a fake picture or stats.

Editorial #457

Let's say I have a green Kougra up for trade. I am looking to get amazing offers, however, because he is holding an unzapped Meowclops. Am I in the wrong for advertising a basic Neopet with a multi-million Neopoint Petpet that also gives an avatar? ~[username removed]
Yes. You are plainly attempting to trade an item for a Neopet, which is not allowed. If what you want is an expensive Neopet, then we suggest you sell the Meowclops for Neopoints and purchase the appropriate morphing potion and paint brush for the Neopet you desire, or use the funds to create a Neopet that can be traded for the Neopet you want.

Editorial #451

Dear TNT, I was going to trade recently and saw a Neopet advertised with an OTB (Offer To Beat) of a rare Neopet that I really wanted. After trading, I found out that the owner had lied about the offers his Neopet had received, and it would be near impossible for me to trade for my dream Neopet. Is misleading others with fake OTBs a reportable offense? ~congo2777
Yes, that is lying to take advantage of someone, which is considered scamming and reportable.

Editorial #449

Heya, TNT. I'm writing in to the Editorial with concerns about custom Neopet trading. The Neopets always have to be at least seven days old before they can be traded, and this is really a troublesome rule. During the seven days of aging, people can back out of offers or simply disappear after a few days and not ever go on afterward. I've gone through this experience, where the person who was offering a baby custom simply created the Neopet, disappeared after 2 days, and was never online again. Against the rules or not, people have backed out of offers, and this is really giving a lot of people a headache. :/ Could this seven days thing be removed (or, perhaps, shortened) so that, well... you know. xD A lot of Neopians would definitely benefit from this! Thanks and GOOD NIGHT mr.coconut. ~galaxy__1995
This rule is here to protect the Neopets. It is quite traumatic for them to be born, painted / dressed-up that day, and given to another owner the next day. Neopets shouldn't be treated as commodities. If you're trading for that Neopet of your dreams, just make sure you trust the person enough to stick with the deal, or don't trade at all.

Editorial #438

Greetings, brethren!^_^ A few months ago I accepted a trade of my baby Ixi for someone's Maraquan Lupe. The person asked me to send my Ixi to a side of theirs. I received my Lupe and promptly accepted, but when I sent over my Ixi, they didn't accept within the 2 day transfer period. Therefore, we decided to wait until the next month for me to transfer the Ixi over. Unfortunately, this same thing kept happening. The person is one of those folks who only go online about once every 10 days, so they never accepted my transfer in time! I haven't heard from that person in about a month now. I don't want my Ixi, but this person is never online_ I'd like to trade her for another Neopet, but I'm afraid that the person will come on one day asking for her and, if I say she's traded, then that person will accuse me of being a scammer! Should I keep her just in case that person ever comes looking for her again, or should I move on and trade her for something else? ~juicylove17
Oh dear, if it's been a few months and you have been earnestly attempting to get the Neopet transferred to the account... well, there's only so much you can do. You've already sent the Ixi twice, and anyone looking into the situation would be able to see that as well. If they can't be bothered to accept the transfer after repeated attempts, we say to just go ahead and consider the trade for the Ixi forfeited and do what you like with the baby Neopet.

Editorial #434

Hey TNT, thanks for the site. In last week's Editorial, in response to a question about trading customs, you said: "They are not obligated to give you their Neopet just because you spent Neopoints on painting or morphing your Neopet into something they wanted, even if they had agreed to trade with you if you did so." However, this is at odds with an earlier Editorial question (from issue 380) that stated: "By this stage it would be too late to cancel the deal. The other person has already invested Neopoints or altered their Neopet to fit the trade agreement." Which is true? Are there different scenarios where backing out after someone has completed a custom is okay? (This seems unfair to me.) Thanks, please remove my username. (: ~ username removed
We believe the confusion caused from past Editorials is that they have referred to custom Neopet trading with regard to Neopoints invested. For instance, Player A says they will trade their Royal Neopet for another Royal, so then Player B purchases a Royal Paint Brush to paint their Neopet Royal for the trade. Player A then changes their mind, leaving Player B upset and with an unused Royal Paint Brush that they had invested their Neopoints into for the purpose of trading Neopets. At this point Player B could sell the paint brush and regain all or nearly all of their Neopoints back. If Player B had painted their Neopet Royal before Player A had backed out, then they would have had enough cause to report Player A to our monitors for further investigation, but that does not mean Player A was in the wrong or a trickster.
When you agree to a custom trade, you are trading a Neopet for a Neopet. The cost of the paint brush or morphing potion cannot be considered in the trade, as that would be against our Terms of Service and trading a Neopet for Neopoints. No matter how much a paint brush or morphing potion costs, you are willingly painting your Neopet to match the trader's request, and should do so at your own risk. While we do not encourage players to back out after a Neopet has been painted or morphed, players can back out or change their minds at any time. If you think someone is deliberately abusing this to trick people, then you should report it to our monitors for them to investigate. We will warn or freeze players that we find repeatedly doing this to others.

Editorial #432

Is it against the rules to do a custom in exchange for another Neopet? Everyone seems to be confused about this. Also, it is against the rules to put a Neopet custom up for adoption, isn't it? Please clear this up! Thank you. :D ~ alexachomburi
A custom Neopet trade – where you paint or morph your Neopet into a particular colour or species that another person wants – is not against the rules as long as neither of you considers the Neopoints spent on the customisation as a part of the trade agreement. Neopet trades cannot include any agreements outside of one Neopet for one Neopet.
For example, if you want someone's Royal Mynci, and they will only trade it for another Royal Neopet, it's perfectly okay for you to go out and buy a Royal Paint Brush and paint your Neopet royal in order to meet their request. However, it's always within their right to back out of the trade up until the point where a Neopet has been transferred. They are not obligated to give you their Neopet just because you spent Neopoints on painting or morphing your Neopet into something they wanted, even if they had agreed to trade with you if you did so. In this situation, you are not painting your Neopet as part of the agreement – you are painting your Neopet of your own free will.
You should only ever paint or morph your Neopet into something that you would want to keep if the other party backed out of the trade. Good advice is to never "downgrade" your Neopet from a rare colour or species to a more common one - if someone wants an Electric Blue JubJub and all you have is a Maraquan Draik, it may not be the best idea to morph your Neopet.

Editorial #426

If I performed a custom for a Neopet but then Boochi zapped it, is the other trader obliged to continue the trade? Please omit my username. ~username removed
Hmm... well, let's put it this way. Let's say someone orders a queen-sized bed from your company. They come into your shop and you present them with a baby crib, then ask them to pay you for the bed they ordered. We imagine that wouldn't go over well. D: It's the same thing with this trade. They requested a certain Neopet / colour combination, and that's what you both agreed to trade for. Unless you offer them what was agreed upon, they can certainly back out of the deal. Now, we understand that you probably spent a lot of Neopoints customising the Neopet, but unfortunate Random Events are a part of the game we all have to deal with.

Editorial #422

Dear TNT, I was wondering if making someone wait pointlessly is reportable? To explain further with an example (a situation that occurred to me a month ago), I was trading a Neopet for a baby custom. She kept telling me that she would create the Neopet day after day, however every time I reminded her, she would say that she'd create the Neopet first thing the next day whenever she could come on. She never did. Afterward, I continued to Neomail her but she started to get angry at me for reminding her numerous times so then she said that she would create the Neopet so that I would stop "telling her to create the Neopet." Once again, she didn't. Is this reportable? Also, if this gets in the Editorial, please remove my username. ~username removed
If you've already upheld your side of the bargain and initiated the trade by sending her your Neopet, then by all means report this player. If you've waited a reasonable amount of time (taking into account that some players don't log on every day and such) and you're starting to get a bad feeling you've been scammed, please let us know so that we can look into the situation. If the transaction hasn't begun yet and no Neopets have been exchanged then, while annoying, they haven't technically cheated you. If this is the case then there really isn't anything we can do, and we therefore suggest that you inform them the deal is over.

Editorial #419

So, I've seen people trading Neopets on the boards of The Pound and they are attempting to trade their Draiks that were created on 9/9/09 for more expensive Neopets, etc. Would this be considered taking advantage of a glitch, since their posts state that these Neopets were glitched Neopets and that they should be getting better Neopets? ~sherbies
The mass release was an "oops" on our part, but we okayed them later, so they are just fine for being traded if that's what their owners wish to do with them.

Editorial #412

I know that you may NOT give someone a paint brush in trade for a Neopet. However, is it technically legal to put up a trade on Mystery Island and have them BUY the paint brush off you for approximately half of what it's worth? I have no idea, and I certainly would not like to be iced after all this time. :/ ~_tamagotchi1fan_
No. You may trade a Neopet for a Neopet. If any items or Neopoints are being exchanged in the deal, you're doing it wrong and are putting your account at risk.

Editorial #395

I recently discovered someone trying to trade Pokemon for Neopets and Neopoints. They claimed that, while the person who gives them the Neopet could be frozen, they (as the person on the receiving end) would not, as technically they had not broken any rules, and that it was not a "service." So could you please, for the love of Sloth, put it in writing that those on the receiving end are also breaking the rules, and that NOTHING (aside from another single Neopet) may be traded for a Neopet? Thanks, and please remove my username. P.S.: I'm sorry I couldn't report them; I could not get ahold of their username. ~[username removed]
Heh, it always amuses us how players make up rules to support the questionable actions they take. We assure everyone that anyone trading a Neopet for anything other than another single Neopet will have their account frozen, both for being on the giving and receiving end. This goes for selling / buying Neopoints or items as well. Both parties involved will likely have all of their accounts iced for cheating.

Editorial #391

Ello TNT, I have a question that has been making my brain hurt. Let's say someone wants a Draik really bad, so they offer TWO Neopets (a pirate Buzz and a royal boy Gelert?) for the Draik. The owner likes the Neopets and accepts. Then, come trading time, the person sends their Neopets and the Draik's owner sends the Draik AND a basic Neopet, therefore making it a fair trade? ~hot_pink_faerie17
No. This is abusing the system in place to make it seem like you're following the rules, while you very well know and understand that Neopets can only be traded 1:1. Trying to hide behind a loophole isn't going to protect you from the site's monitors. We're on to your tricks. ;) Please trade, play, enjoy the site, and follow the rules in the spirit that was intended.

Editorial #390

Zomg, I got into the Editorial! Anyway, for my question, which is about trading Neopets: as you may know, there are some people who trade Neopets that are considered to have great value for glitched ones. I was wondering: what would happen if two people agreed to trade, let's say, a royal Neopet for a glitched one, but the glitched Neopet then unglitched during the trade? Can the owner of the glitched Neopet be held responsible for that? I was wondering since I had a glitched Neopet, but it then unglitched before I could try to trade it. ~[username removed]
Prior to the actual trade, as long as no Neopoints or items have been invested to alter the Neopet, one can back out of the deal. If the process has already begun, you are required to complete the deal. Once again, we'd like to announce that anyone trading for a Neopet simply because it's glitched should know that we will fix it eventually and it most likely won't be glitched forever.

Editorial #389

Hi guys and gals! I was just wondering: is this hypothetical situation allowed? Player A is visited by the Fountain Faerie. Player B then offers half the price of the item in exchange for their Buzz being painted a colour they want. Player A accepts, the Neopet is traded and painted, the player gets the avatar, and then the Neopet is sent back. Is that okay, or is it against the rules? ~sparky_boyce
Noooope. That player is paying Neopoints for a paint job. Stick to buying paint brushes with your Neopoints.

Editorial #387

Okay, so this has been running through my mind for quite some time now. I've noticed a lot of people trading their Draiks / Krawks, or expensively painted Neopets for basic "glitched" Neopets (Neopets with no eyes, etc.). Why they feel the need to have a glitched Neopet is beyond me. Now, this is all fine and dandy, sure. Trade with whatever Neopet you want, but... won't you guys, oh wondrous TNT, eventually "fix" those aforementioned glitched Neopets? ~linds4y
Yeeeeah... we think the players trading for glitched Neopets might have stumbled into a game of Staff Basher and gotten knocked over the head a few too many times, but hey... it's their choice. Just realise, guys, that these glitches could be fixed at any moment, so don't come QQing to us if you traded your Draik for a green Quiggle!

Editorial #384

I've seen a lot of people trading glitched Neopets. You know, Neopets with eyes missing, mouths that disappear, and some with zero or negative stats. However, when I made a topic asking if anyone would trade for my glitched stat Neopet, someone told me that I could be frozen for profiting from a glitch. So, is trading glitched Neopets something we shouldn't be doing? ~muffinplz
Hmm... we don't really have a rule for this. Glitches have a habit of being fixed, so it's kind of silly to trade for a glitched Neopet. That being said, you guys always surprise us with what gets you excited, lol. As long as you aren't doing something to purposely glitch your Neopet, and the person understands that it won't be permanent, we guess you can go ahead until some problem presents itself and we then need to put a stop to it.

Editorial #381

You said it was against the rules to agree to trade a Neopet for a custom and then back out once the custom was created, but what if you spent the NP or agreed to trade with a user and then your Neopet was hit by Boochi or another Random Event? What should be done in that situation? In a way, you shouldn't have to trade the Neopet, but you still spent all those NP's to make the custom to get the other Neopet. What should we do, TNT? These dilemmas make my head hurt. ~ hottie4jlo
We could play the "what if" game until the Kaus come home, but we can't make a clear cut rule for every possible happenstance. At this point you need to step up and communicate with the person you had the trade agreement with and work it out together. Consider it a good life lesson in learning to deal with less than ideal circumstances. ;D Also, if a Neopet is slated for trade, perhaps it's best to not keep it as your active Neopet, just in case a Random Event does head your way.

Editorial #380

Hi. I was wondering: let's say two people agree to trade Neopets -- an already made Neopet for a custom (as an example, we'll say it's a Plushie Chomby). If I've already bought the item, but not morphed yet, is the other person allowed to back out of our agreement? I wouldn't mind if the item was ETS (easy to sell), but I don't think Plushie Chomby morphing potions are ETS. D: Oh, and please remove my username. Thanks! ~[username removed]
By this stage it would be too late to cancel the deal. The other person has already invested Neopoints or altered their Neopet to fit the trade agreement.

Editorial #377

This has been somewhat of a debate on the boards; if you agree to do a trade where the other person is painting a Neopet for you, but then you decide to back out AFTER the Neopet has already been painted, is that considered scamming? People seem really unclear, and there are many different answers. ~amygirl13
Yes, that would be scamming. It's the same as agreeing to make a trade on the Trading Post and then backing out when the deal's half over. If no action has been performed then it's okay to back out, but after the person has spent Neopoints to paint the Neopet, the trade must go through.

Editorial #371

Hi TNT! I've often wondered about this, so I finally decided to ask if custom training was allowed before a trade. Like, let's say a person offers a 600,000 NP custom training for his Neopet before he trades it. Is this allowed? Also, are custom Neopets still allowed for trading? I hope this can settle the doubts once and for all. Thanks, TNT! Also, please keep my username anonymous. :) ~[username removed]
Let's make this clear. Trading Neopets is not a spiffy way to buy trained Neopets, or to basically purchase what you might consider a Neopet "upgrade." Trading Neopets is literally for trading Neopets. One for one. There should be no Neopoints, paint brushes, special training, or anything else involved in these trades.

Editorial #365

Hey TNT, I've been going over the rules of trading and I know you say NO TRADING PETS FOR ITEMS, but is it allowed to trade a Neopet for a Draik egg since it can be made into a Neopet? I don't intend to do it myself but I was just curious. ^_^ Heres a cookie. *Holds out CCC* ~ghostgirl777
Draik eggs are an item, so we're gonna have to say 'no' to say consistent with the rules, sorry. You could use the same argument for trading Neopets for morphing potions and whatnot, so we just don't want to go there.

Editorial #363

When trading a Neopet, there are currently three ways people do it. One, I trade my island Kacheek for your zombie Aisha. Two, I create (or paint/morph an existing Neopet) an island Kacheek and trade it for your zombie Aisha. And three, I send you my Kacheek, you paint it island, THEN you send me my Neopet back and I send you the zombie Aisha. The third method is my question -- is this acceptable? ~impishmars
The first two are fine, but the last would be a no-no, since you are basically selling the zombie Aisha for a Mystery Island Paint Brush, and that is not acceptable.

Editorial #363

So, let's say I trade a Neopet for a 3 million NP custom. Would it be allowed for me to send the Neopet that I want customed over and, rather than having them paint it, ask that a Mootix (which costs 3 million) be attached instead, serving in place of the "paint job" custom? Technically you can't profit from it, as Petpetpets disappear when traded, but Mootix are still items. I asked people on the Pound boards about this and got VERY strong mixed answers as a reply. Also, are you allowed to trade Neopets using aged avatar Neopets / Mootix as an extra? I desperately want answers to both of these questions. Please remove my username. Thanks! ~[username removed]
One Neopet for another Neopet is what you are allowed to trade. Petpets, extraneous items, Neopoints, or even extra Neopets are NOT allowed to be considered part of the trade.

Editorial #363

Dearest Editorial answerer(s), recently on the Pound boards, people have been offering trades like: "I'll trade you my UC Plushie Kougra for a 4.7 mil custom divided over 2 Neopets, a Royal and a Faerie. Since I'll be getting 2 Neopets and you'll only be getting 1, I'll also give you my Blue Poogle, so it's a fair 2-for-2 trade." Is this against the rules? ~jebbica
Oh look, more abuse! *pretends to be shocked* No, this is not allowed. Neopets can ONLY be traded in a 1-to-1 exchange. You can trade the same person one Neopet for one of theirs, and then another one of theirs for another of yours, but they cannot be a part of the same deal. Therefore, no 2-for-2 as part of the same exchange.

Editorial #360

Dear TNT, it has become quite common to see players on the boards telling of how they were Neomailed by a player offering to trade their Neopets, except it turns out that the person is not the actual owner of the Neopet and is just trying to scam someone into pounding/trading their Neopet. Can people get frozen for this? It causes a problem for the misguided trader who might lose a Neopet for nothing, and also the true owner of the Neopet, who is then bombarded with Neomails asking to trade a Neopet that they never intended to trade. It's hard to tell who actually owns what Neopet nowadays, with all the side accounts that are around. Please let everyone know that they should check the profile of the Neopet, and they should NEOMAIL THE OWNER SHOWN on the profile before they ever agree to anything. ~riotorange
Yes, you can be frozen for scamming someone like that or attempting to trade a Neopet that isn't yours without the owner's permission. Your advice is very sound. Never, ever agree to a trade (whether it be with items or Neopets) unless you have spoken directly with the account that owns it.

Editorial #348

Can you stand one more Neopet trading/Pound question? :) (Oh, and please leave my name off... thanks!) Let's say Sue and Bob are too impatient to wait until July to trade their Neopets via transfer, so they risk the Pound. Sue goes first and sends her Neopet, but Bob misses the Neopet in the Pound! Does Bob then have to give Sue his Neopet, since they agreed to trade? Can he say no, since he technically didn't receive a Neopet? Also, what if Sue thinks Bob was sneaky and had a friend/his side account grab her Neopet, so Bob didn't have to trade his Neopet? *head whirls in confusion* Any solutions to this mess, oh wise ones? Thank you! :)
We've provided a relatively safe way to transfer your Neopets, and we strongly suggest being patient and using that function to avoid this situation. If you are not eligible for transferring at the moment, try not to trade until you are. Remember: if you are impatient and use the Pound, it's free for all (except for purposeful scams) and we cannot protect you. You'll have to work it out among yourselves.

Editorial #347

Well, since users have been allowed to trade their Neopets =[ site players have been trading Neopets and offering an expensive Petpet to come with the Neopet (clearly stating it with the offer of their Neopet), so that it's kind of like they're buying the Neopet. Shouldn't this be against the rules and banned? It seems unfair. ~exsploding
If you see anyone trying to skirt the rules of the 1:1 Neopet trade by sticking in an expensive Petpet to basically buy their way into a nicer trade, please report them. This does not mean you should report everyone who is trading a Neopet with a Petpet attached, but rather we'd appreciate it if you kept an eye out for people who are obviously trying to cheat the system and bring down harsher rules on the heads of everyone who is dealing fairly.

Editorial #345

Hello, TNT. I have a short question about trading Neopets. My younger sister had set up a trade (orange Koi for ghost Lupe) and, after she successfully adopted the Koi, she put the ghost Lupe up for adoption. Afterwards, she noticed that it was still there, and that the other person's account was only 2 months old (therefore, she was unable to adopt the Neopet). Since the Koi was painted, my sister couldn't send back the Koi. My sister now feels guilty because she can't send the Neopet back, nor send the Lupe. Can she get reported for not sending it back? Should she wait until the account ages? Thanks. ~huggygirl123
Egads! Well, there's a disaster of a situation. :-/ Both parties should always check to make sure that the other person is eligible for the transfer, but for this case we'd have to say the younger account is at fault. We've requested that the following warning, which is on the abandon page, be placed on the transfer page as well: "Neopets that are higher than Level 2, Neopets that are limited-edition species, and Neopets that have been painted with certain rare or expensive paint brushes CANNOT be adopted from accounts that have been active for less than four months." Hopefully that will reduce the chances of something like this happening again. It'd be very sweet of your sister to hold on to the Lupe (if she still has it) until the account is old enough to accept the transfer, but your sister should not be reported as there is really nothing she can do.

Editorial #344

I have a question pertaining to Neopet trading. We're not supposed to trade NP or items for Neopets, I know that much. However, if (theoretically) I got a Fountain Faerie Quest and I had someone offer me a Neopet that I liked (for example, a Robot Poogle) if I MADE them a Neopet they liked (such as a Maraquan Shoyru), would that be allowed? Some people think it's a legal loophole (because it's still Neopet-for-Neopet trading), but others don't believe you're allowed to offer "services" or "potential Neopets" in exchange for real Neopets. Could you clear this up for us? It's kind of a hot-button issue on the Neoboards. Thank you! ~sorenina
We discussed this and decided that, in the end, as long as it's a 1:1, Neopet-for-Neopet deal, then it doesn't quite matter how it came to be. This is our opinion at the moment, so don't hold us to this forever. The whole Neopet trading thing is new to all of us, so we're still figuring out what is and isn't working and determining what is simply crossing the line.

Editorial #343

Hello TNT, I have another Pound question. Let's say you're transferring a Neopet to someone... except you used up your transfer for this month. The person still transfers the Neopet to you, and then says that he's willing to catch the Neopet from the Pound. If you say, "Remember, if you lose the Neopet from the catch, it's YOUR FAULT since you didn't want to wait until the next month and I don't owe you anything," do you still owe that person a Neopet? Thanks! ~kangin
This is an expected risk when using the Pound to move Neopets. Unless there was some sort of foul play involved, you are not responsible for compensating that person. Foul play would include anything dishonest, or purposely attempting to lose the Neopet or block it from getting it to its owner.

Editorial #341

I've been playing Neopets off-and-on for almost eight years now. I love the new transfer feature in the Pound, but as you know it has developed into a black hole of confusion. To my knowledge it has never been okay to swap/trade Neopets. For example: I have a Lupe and Person A will give me their Poogle for my Lupe. This is bad. However, if I wanted to move my Lupe to my side account, this is fine. Nonetheless, trading behavior is rampant now and I'm just wondering if we can get a specific and concise YES or NO on the issue. So many players, including older ones, read past Editorials and say it's permissible while many others, such as myself, still believe it to be wrong. Am I wrong and trading has always been okay? Or am I right and the rules, since changed, now make it okay? Or was it always wrong and is still wrong? Unfortunately, I am not so concise, but I thank you in advance for clarifying the issue! ~folgers86
To explain as simply as possible, the first thing someone should understand is that, once they choose to let their Neopet go (even if it's to a friend), the Neopet no longer belongs to them. Therefore, they need to be sure that letting their Neopet leave the account is what they want, because this is solely their responsibility and choice. Secondly, as of this writing, the selling of Neopets and trading of Neopets for items, Neopoints, etc. is also against the rules. Therefore, if you are caught doing it you could lose the Neopet and your account.

Editorial #369

This sounds complicated, and hard to do, so be forewarned if you don't fully understand what I am saying. I adore the way you make safe Neopet trading among accounts easy with your new "transfer" options, whether you're a trader or just moving the Neopets on your account. Still, I've seen a few scams going around (though not nearly as many as there were). Could you request a Neopet from a certain account, but trade it to a different account? Of course, the person accepting the Neopet would have to agree to have the trade done on both accounts, so that you are giving Neopet "A" to user "1," but are receiving pet "B" from user "2." If this wouldn't work out, I would like an explanation (servers couldn't handle it, people still getting scammed). I just want to help people not get scammed out of their Neopets anymore. ~fridayed
No matter what, people are going to find the oddest ways of transferring and trading Neopets, and we don't think there's a good way to build a simple-to-use system that can handle all the strange possibilities you players come up with. Please either use the system in the way we have it worked out, or be very cautious and decide if it's worth the risk using other methods.

Editorials Regarding Lending Pets

Editorial #481

Hey TNT, I was hoping you could settle something for me. I was asking around if it would be okay for me to give some of my Neopets to my sister for a bit and then expect them back later. Someone told me this was petsitting, and therefore, against the rules. I have always been under the impression that petsitting was giving someone your (special) word so they could log onto your account and take care of your Neopets while you are away... which, I know, is a big no-no. What about transferring my Neopets to my sister for a while, though? Is that okay? Thanks for clearing this up! (Please remove my username. ;) ) ~username removed
The concept of neopetstting that entails allowing someone to have access to your account (always a dangerous no-no!) is, indeed, against the rules. Transferring your Neopets to be under someone else's care for a while is just fine, as long as it's made clear to them that it's a temporary arrangement. Also take note that, if you use the Pound to transfer your Neopets to another account, then they're fair game while in the Pound, so be careful!

Editorial #387

Hey, I was recently lent a Meowclops for the avatar. It was on a Neopet, via The Pound. The person didn't check how many Neopets I had, whether I had the correct amount of Neopoints, etc. So there I was, waiting in The Pound, having forgotten that I had four Neopets and not knowing I was 2,000 NP too low to adopt the Neopet. I only remembered seconds before, when I had no time to do anything but hope and try. I pounded a Neopet (something I now sincerely regret, since it's been adopted by a German so we can't communicate), and took 2,000 NP out of the bank, by which time somebody else had adopted it. The person wouldn't give the Neopet back, saying that the rules wouldn't let them. Since then, I have been slightly harassed by the original owner. Am I the one to blame? Please don't show my username. Thank you! *throws basket of cookies* ~[username removed]
Egads, what a disaster! It seems both of you were simply careless: not using the transfer option instead of The Pound and not thinking ahead to the cost of the Neopet. The person that received the Neopet in The Pound is under no obligation to return the Neopet or Petpet unless they want to. Unless there was foul play going on, it seems like it was an accident and that no one is really to blame, though it's sad that the lender is out a Meowclops. :( Both of you, please be more careful in the future.

Editorial #387

Hey, TNT! Love your work! I have a question. I was on a lending board and one of the lenders said that they hadn't gotten their Jetsam back, so I offered to help her get another one. She then said no thanks, because she didn't want another one, but rather wished that we could make sides just to lend. So, that's my question: are we allowed to make sides just to lend? Thanks! ~helplessly_confused
As long as you're not using it in an attempt to scam or trick someone, we suppose that there is nothing wrong with it, as long as you are obeying the side account rules and not creating more than five total accounts.

Editorial #367

Hey guys. I recently borrowed a Neopet for an avatar and had to shift one of my main Neopets to a side to make space for him. Once the avatar was acquired, I put the Neopet back in the transfer system. I then moved my original Neopet back to fill the space. It was a while after I had sent the lent Neopet that it was accepted. My question is, what happens if the transferred Neopet isn't picked up within the time limit, and as a result has to be returned? Would I end up with 5 Neopets, because I filled the 4th space? Cheers. ~lilithx
If the other transfer doesn't go through (it will keep trying for days), then the Neopet will automatically be placed in the Pound. You will not end up with 5 Neopets.

Editorial #355

Let's suppose you were lent a Neopet for the Battledome or for an avatar. If you were to change something about the Neopet, such as changing its gender, or painting it, or removing its paint brush clothes, and then you returned the Neopet, is that reportable? (It seems pretty reportable to me, but I think it would be nice to get an answer in the Editorial itself.) ~indulgences
Uh, yeah... you don't borrow a friend's car and paint it green with pink polka dots and take out their stereo and replace it with an inferior one when you have it. That's just wrong. D: So yes, we're gonna say it's reportable unless it's something that was beyond their ability to stop (like a Random Event attack). Though we feel we need to say that, if you claim the Pant Devil stole their Sword of Skardsen while in your possession and we find it in that side account you're sure we'd never find, all your accounts will be frozen like last year's Thanksgiving turkey... just so you know. ;)

Editorial #341

I am sure you are sick of answering Pound questions, but could you answer just two more please? A lot of people are "lending" Neopets since the Pound opened. I have questions about this. First, is the lending/borrowing of Neopets allowed? I know it was very common in the past but I just wanted to check if you are still allowing it. Second, if someone does lend you a Neopet (clearly saying it is only lending) you are not allowed to keep, correct? Some people are claiming they have the right to keep the Neopet (even after agreeing to only borrow it) since once a Neopet is placed in the Pound it is up for anyone to adopt. Thank you so much! ~shakinheadtotoe
Once again, we don't like the concept of people borrowing/lending their Neopets (they are supposed to be your pets, not objects), but we digress. It is okay according to our current site rules to lend Neopets. It is NOT okay for a player to refuse to return Neopets/items/Neopoints that were lent to them. This is scamming and is not tolerated. If a player is found to be scamming, ALL their accounts will be frozen. When something of yours is lent out you are taking the risk that a player could be dishonest and not return it. If they do run off with it, please report them so that they may be frozen, but do not expect to get the item/Neopoints/Neopet returned to you.
More specifically with Neopets, as far as the option to transfer a Neopet there is no "open season" on a Neopet that is being lent. The person who receives it is obligated by site rules to return it. However, please note that if the transferring is being done through the open Pound and not the transfer system, anyone intercepting the Neopet between the two players is not at fault and is not obligated to return it. This is not the case if the intended recipient (no matter which account of theirs they are on) receives it, though. If they get it, and it was a loan, they are obligated to send it back to the owner. If a Neopet is given to someone (say, a friend that falls out of your favour a few weeks afterward) they are not required to return the Neopet.
There, we think we covered everything that time. x_X
Helpful hint: For the sake of safety, if you do attempt to use the open Pound to send Neopets around, don't talk about it on a board where others could be lurking with the intent of snagging the Neopet. If it has been spoken about, privately arrange a time through Neomail for the adoption to take place.

Editorials Regarding Adopting Pets

Editorial #444

Hello, dear Neopian team. *hands out homemade candy* Today I read about "charity laboratory mapping," something I had never heard of before. It means using a Secret Laboratory Map to zap Neopets you get from the Pound until they change to a beautiful colour, then giving these Neopets out to people who can't afford to paint a Neopet. This sounded like a lot of fun and I would love to do it, but before spending $$$ NP I would like to know... is this kind of charity allowed? Also, would it be allowed on side accounts? ~mallrat_drusilladark
Yes, this is allowed, and on side accounts as well. Standard rules about Neopet adoption apply, and please remember that you may NOT charge someone in any way for adopting a Neopet. This means no requesting adoption fees or "caretaking" fees. Aside from all that, have fun, and take good care of those Neopets. ^_^

Editorial #434

Hey, TNT! More and more I've been seeing people who want others to rate their applications for Neopets. Not only that, but they are making boards for references from people about how good an owner they would be. What is THAT?!? I was under the impression that applications as such were against the rules, yet we see them all the time -- and not just the kind where you have to send a Neomail, but all-out Neopet art, references, you name it. I have to admit, I am REALLY glad that I am not in search of a new "dream" Neopet... I could not compete! So what's the rule and how does one proceed when we come across this kind of behavior? Username removed, please. ~ username removed
As we stated in Editorial #342, extreme pet applications will not be tolerated on the site. What we mean by extreme includes requests for Petpages to be made for the Neopet as part of the application, the owner of the Neopet being refunded or gifted in any way to compensate for the "raising" of the Neopet, or anything beyond a standard application. If the owner wants you to write a little essay about why you would be a good choice, that is fine. (We encourage everyone to use their writing skills!) But going off the deep end of attempting to find a good owner for your Neopet to forcing people through hoops to boost your ego will not be welcome on the site. If you feel a player's application process falls into the extreme, you may report that player to our monitors for further investigation.

Editorial #388

My friend recently let me adopt the Neopet that started our friendship. This Neopet came with a story and design. Since the Neopet is now mine, but was my friend's for a long time, am I allowed to change the story and / or design? Thanks. ~u_r_my_candy_girl
Yes, it's your Neopet now, so you can do with it as you please. That being said, it would be courteous to okay the idea with your friend to be nice. :)

Editorial #369

While wandering the Pound chat as of late, I've noticed several people putting a "10 million NP custom up for adoption." This apparently consists of someone making an application, stating what they would ask the custom maker to create. I'm wondering if this is bending the spirit of the rules a little, in that it's 1.) essentially applying for a Neopet that doesn't exist yet and 2.) pretty much applying for money, even if it is to be a Neopet. Not being an adopter or custom maker, but rather as an impartial observer, I'm curious: is this allowed? ~anjie
This is bending the spirit of the rules. No one should advertise a Neopet that doesn't even exist yet, nor should they advertise an application that even resembles a competition and/or sale.

Editorial #350

My sister liked my Lupe, but since her account is less than four months old and my Lupe is level 6, we couldn't transfer. I then had the idea of putting my Lupe in the Pound so that my sister could adopt her. Well, I placed my Lupe in the Pound, but when my sister searched "Soaring_Eagle2243" she came up with... nothing. I searched the name on the computer I was logged into and found her. Eventually I readopted my Lupe and I'm not giving her to my sister. So why didn't my Lupe come up on my sister's search? ~laurapet131
If an account is not eligible to be transferred to, it means it's not eligible to adopt the same Neopet out of the Pound. The requirements are the same.

Editorial #346

Why can't accounts that are less than 4 months old transfer or adopt limited edition (or most painted) Neopets? I'm a responsible owner. ~nightcloud_warrior
We're sure you are. :) However, the system was abused by players making brand new accounts and adopting all the nice Neopets out of the Pound and sticking them in side accounts made just to gather fancy Neopets for some unknown reason. This rule is to help protect Neopets and give active accounts a better chance of getting a nice Neopet.

Editorial #344

I got a Neomail on May 15th about a person looking to adopt a Neopet. I wrote them back the next day, saying that as soon as they have an opening (they have 4 Neopets currently) I will transfer the Neopet over to them. I also told the person to let me know when they did. Because I hadn't heard a response 2 days after I last Neomailed them I Neomailed them again, letting them know that I would like to hear from them if they are still interested. I also stated that I wouldn't want to risk my account getting filled up with lab pets, so I would find another owner if necessary. I was trying not to sound rude, but it has been 4 days. I don't want to break the rules since I told them they could have the Neopet. If they don't respond within the week could I get iced if I find a new owner? ~maximo1434
No, we think you've been more than reasonable in waiting for a response from them, so don't worry about it. Good form! :)

Editorial #343

Hey TNT! In last week's Editorial you said that extreme Petpage applications are no longer allowed. At one point you said, "What we mean by extreme includes requests for Petpages to be made for the Neopet as part of the application." Does this mean Petpage apps are no longer allowed, or that you're not allowed to ask for people to make your Neopet a Petpage? I'm asking because I thought the latter, while my friend though it was the former. Can you please say which of us is right? ~ralph89170
No one may require/request/hint that an extreme Petpage application is required. If, for whatever reason, you really love making Petpages for Neopets other than your own, then well, more power to you. However, we suggest giving the attention to your own Neopets rather than using it in hopes of getting another one. We really love to see people cherish their Neopets and enjoy them as if they were real, which is why it breaks our heart to see them often treated like pixels, but sadly we can't force people to care about their Neopets. :(

Editorial #342

During a discussion over a deliciously large bowl of Jelly Bellies we have decided that extreme pet applications will no longer be tolerated on the site. What we mean by extreme includes requests for Petpages to be made for the Neopet as part of the application, the owner of the Neopet being refunded or gifted in any way to compensate for the "raising" of the Neopet, or anything beyond a standard application. If the owner wants you to write an little essay about why you would be a good choice, that is fine. (We encourage everyone to use their writing skills!) But going off the deep end of attempting to find a good owner for your Neopet to forcing people through hoops to boost your ego and making it a competition will no longer be welcome on the site.

Editorials Regarding The Pound

Editorial #482

*throws Meepits about* Hello! So, on the Neopian Pound boards, people often create boards about "losing a Neopet in the Pound," like when they try and fail to Pound transfer their Neopets to another account. Would it be considered harassment to post the name of the Neopet that you "lost," or the name of the person who "caught" your Neopet? I've heard from some people that it is and from others that it isn't. Personally, I think it could be considered harassment, because other people may feel the need to take it upon themselves to Neomail the new owner and harass them into giving the Neopet back, but I'm not sure, and I don't think I've seen anything in the rules about it. Thank you, and please remove my username! :) ~username removed
We can't think of any legitimate reason why you would name the person that caught your Neopet in the Pound, except to have others socially pressure them into relinquishing the Neopet that they got in a fair snag. Therefore, please, leave their name out of it and deal with them directly.

Editorial #477

Heeeey, TNT :) I recently adopted a lovely Christmas Flotsam from The Pound that was just calling to me. I love him dearly, but I know he's missing some accessories (namely antlers and a nice little wreath for a scarf) and I think they would look really great on him. I know that if you adopt a Neopet it doesn't have any wearables on it, but I was wondering: is there a way to reset this, or would I have to paint him again? Thanks. :) ~another_note
Sorry, you'd need to repaint him to get the clothing.

Editorial #461

Hi, TNT! *throws cotton candy about merrily* I was wondering: what is going to happen to all the lovely unconverted Neopets on inactive accounts? Will they all be deleted / purged, or will they be released back into the Pound like Pound Release? I would hate to see some of the great Neopets like [Petname] the unconverted plushie Blumaroo disappear forever. :( ~neolover_200029
Sorry, purged Neopets will no longer exist until they are recreated by a new, loving owner. We know a lot of people are enthralled by and covet unconverted Neopets, but there are plenty of Neopets in existence and waiting to be created that are just as special.

Editorial #434

*hands cookies and milk* I was just wondering: let's say someone pounded a Christmas Kacheek that someone else adopted and then zapped into a robot. Would they still be entitled to the Neopet? I saw this issue come up recently on the boards. ~ __hotcocoa_
Once you have pounded a Neopet, you are no longer entitled to it if another player has already adopted it. No matter what snazzy colour another player may have painted or zapped it into, it is no longer your Neopet. :( You are welcome to introduce yourself to the current owner and perhaps find a new Neofriend in the process, though. While seeing your Neopet change colours and owners can be disappointing at times, please remember that the Pound is open to everyone and should be used at your own risk.

Editorial #430

I was wondering: when you are surfing the Pound and adopt a Neopet, but then somebody Neomails you asking for the Neopet back, is it okay not to give it to them? I am just tired of finding really good Neopets and feeling guilty that they belonged to someone who loved them before, so instead of keeping them I end up sending them back! I mean, the Pound is fair game and if you lose your Neopet then you've lost it, right? (please remove my username) ~ username removed
As we have stated in the past, please understand that when you send your Neopets to the Pound, it's at your own risk. If someone adopts your Neopet during a Pound transfer, they do not have to return that Neopet to you. While politely Neomailing a person to ask for your Neopet back is not against the rules, it is not an act we encourage. Unfortunately, some of our less-trustworthy players will use this as an attempt to scam you out of your newly adopted Neopet, so we do ask you to use caution when returning a Neopet. Kudos to you for being a nice Neopian and returning lost Neopets!

Editorial #393

I've seen quite a few people who have adopted a Neopet from the Pound comment about the large amount of Neomail they've received from people claiming to be the old owners. The common claim is that the Neopet was lost during a transfer or was accidentally pounded. Is it considered a scam to Neomail people who have adopted Neopets from the Pound to claim you were the original owner (and imply that, or outright ask for, the Neopet to be returned) if you never did own the Neopet? Thanks. ~michellesteward
This is very much a scam. Why? Because you are lying in order to trick someone into doing something profitable for you. If a monitor sees you doing this, be prepared to receive a warning or perhaps be frozen if we see that this isn't the first time you've attempted such shenanigans.

Editorial #389

Hi TNT!!! *waves furiously* I was wondering, since Lutaris (is the plural of Lutari Lutari or Lutaris?) run away when someone tries to transfer or trade them, does that mean that their names become available once that happens? For instance, if I tried to trade a Lutari named Snuggles and she ran away, would I be able to then go and create another Neopet with the name Snuggles, or would it still be in your database as my escaped Lutari? Thanks! ~nanook_o_north
*waves back furiously* When a Lutari is abandoned, it doesn't wink out of existence, it just runs away to someplace safe where no one can ever try to abandon it again. So, no, the name does not become available again.
P.S.: The plural is Lutaris.

Editorial #354

I have an 8 year old son who just loves to play Neopets. Well, recently I left my name signed in and he decided to play. Alas, when I got on the next morning my beautiful Neopet was gone, and when I asked he said he had gotten me a new Neopet. AHHHH. I was so mad, and of course the person said, "Sorry, Pound is fair game." Knowing this is true, I said, "Ok thanks, congrats on the new Neopet..." Will you please add a PIN to the Pound area so that this cannot happen again? You have PINs to protect NPs and items, but not our most precious possesions -- our Neopets. Please TNT, add a PIN. PS: You guys do a great job on the site and we appreciate you. ~woolviegirl
Oof. That stinks. :( However, it may be a bit bittersweet to learn that there already is a PIN option for that area of the site. To check out all the PIN preferences, please go here.

Editorial #351

I have been noticing something interesting lately while reading the Pound boards. We all know that if you pound your Neopet instead of transferring, the Neopet is fair game to Pound surfers. Yet I often see people harassing the Neopian who nabbed their "trade." They aggressively send rude Neomails wanting their pet back. They claim to have screenies as "proof" that the pet is theirs. It makes for an unpleasant experience for the poor sap who adopted the pet. In my opinion, they shouldn't ask for it back at all, even if they are nice about it. It makes the person who adopted feel guilty and put out. Have you thought of putting a disclaimer on the Abandon part of the Pound to not harass anyone who might adopt your pet? Some people don't understand the word "abandon," but if you threaten to sic the Meepits on them, maybe they will listen. Thanks in advance! ~jillian3_3
Asking the person if they'd be willing to relinquish the Neopet, and offering proof that you are the actual owner = acceptable.
Harassing, offering payment, encouraging others to harass someone, repeatedly Neomailing them after they've declined, or generally trying to make the life of the adopter difficult = very bad.
If you've adopted a Neopet fairly from the Pound and were not in any agreement with the owner under any of your accounts, and they have moved beyond polite request to harassment, please report them for their behaviour.

Editorial #345

If you find a Neopet in the Pound and someone says that it is theirs, and they show proof that it was once theirs, do you need to give it back? ~poolparty_211
It'd be a very wonderful and kind act if you did, but you do not have to, unless you were engaged in a trade with that player with any of your accounts.

Hello, TNT. *dumps bucket of Meepit cookies on you* User A unknowingly traded her unconverted Neopet for a Draik with an account that was compromised. The original owner (User B, a very popular Avatar Chatter) asked for the Draik back, however User A declined (even when User B offered her another Neopet for the Draik). User B then proceeded to make boards about the Draik in question with the title "TNT GIVE ME MY DRAIK BACK" on the Avatar Chat boards because she felt TNT was not doing anything after she had reported the matter. User B's friends then began to harass User A on the boards and in Neomails, further accusing User A of being a bad person, a scammer, a Cookie Grabber user, and a cheater. User A got goaded so much that she GUP'd the Draik. Who is in the wrong here? What is the best solution for this? Should User A have given back the Draik, or was the Draik hers because she legitimately traded a Neopet for the Draik, not knowing it was a compromised Neopet? (Please remove my username, thanks.) ~username removed
User B and anyone who harassed User A is at fault in this situation. While it may have been quite kind for Player A to return the Neopet, they were under no obligation to do so, and they certainly should not have been harassed by a mob backing a popular player. After contacting us with regard to the situation, User B does not have the right to go vigilante because we either did not respond promptly enough to their liking or they didn't like our response. Though there is no perfect solution to this mess, it was handled very poorly by all the players involved. We investigate such incidents on a case by case basis; please give us time to do so to avoid situations like this in the future.

Editorial #458

Hello, TNT! *throws cabbage* So, the other day in the Pound Chat, a person made a board about their new Neopet, and how there was a "Legs" on it (You know, like the old Petpet?). It was, like, 3,000+ days old and on this brand new Neopet. How did that happen? It's one of the coolest glitches I've ever seen. XD ~adorabletree
We noticed that Neopet earlier today and came to a conclusion: you know how Petpages tend to strangely resurrect themselves with deleted Neopets that have been recreated? Well, we think this is a similar glitch. D:

Editorial #457

I've figured out when the guard falls asleep on my account. I don't have a new Neopet to paint every week, though. I've been wondering whether it is okay to transfer other people's Neopets to my account and paint them magma for them. I've already asked on the Neoboards and some people think it's okay. Please remove my username. ~username removed
We suppose it's alright, but you may not ask for any compensation for your assistance. You can only do it for free as a good deed, and must politely refuse any gifts they may offer in gratitude. As always, players should be very selective and cautious of who they lend their Neopets to.

Editorial #451

Hey, TNT! What is the official stance on Neopet name ownership? Let's say that someone, regardless of intention, posts a name that isn't taken on the Neoboards. Someone else comes along, sees it, and creates a Neopet with that name before anyone else can. It's not a nice thing to do, but is it against the rules? ~annerz
It's a rather mean thing to do, and we won't be too pleased with such behaviour, but it is not against the rules. If you have a great idea for a Neopet's name, it's best to keep it to yourself or use Neomail.

Editorial #424

So, we've all seen it... "POUNDING DRAIK!!!" then you click the topic and the person says "With a candy cane LOL." I've even seen one that just had "No" as the first post. The last time I checked false titles were reportable, but now they're not? Can you please clarify this (and please leave my username out, thanks ;D )? ~username removed
These false topics are considered spam and can be reported as such.

Editorial #341

Included because this deals with transferred pets, as well!
TNT, I'm thoroughly weirded out. I went to edit one of my Cybunnies' Petpages (one that I'd CREATED, not adopted), and HE ALREADY HAD ONE. My first reaction was shock - since that page had offsite links on it. Could it have been a previous Neopet with the same name that got deleted due to inactivity? I'm really confused. O.o ~angelaxlove
Haha, yep, that's exactly what happened actually! It seems that when a Neopet is purged from the database the Petpage isn't cleared. It may be a good idea to check the Petpage of Neopets you've created if you have a feeling they may have had a past life.

Editorials on the Interpretation of Rules

Editorial #478

Hi, TNT! I was on a board when someone said that they'd left a weight on their Refresh button all night so they could try to create a Neopet. I, along with a few other people, linked them to an Editorial that said this was against the rules, but someone else said that Editorials are out of date and, therefore, not to be used as reference. So, um... is placing a weight on your keyboard's F5 button still considered cheating, and should we be abiding by any of the rules that the Editorial clarifies? Thanks! ~shade_the_great
Placing a weight on your F5 button is considered cheating, which is a freezable offence. Also, please consider what's in the Editorial as a clarification of the rules, until such a time as the site's Terms and Conditions or a newer Editorial updates information to trump that rule. For example, if we said in Editorial #188 that the word "cheese" is no longer allowed on the Neoboards, that rule would last until we reconsider and say it's now okay in Editorial #734.

Editorial #382

Hey TNT! :) *hands you cookies* Okay, let's say there are two users: User A and User B (creative, right?). If User A had a newbie account and User B had a nicer account (more trophies, avatars, stamps, better Neopets, Premium, etc.) and both users broke the same rule, would you give any sort of "handicap" to User B since they have a better account, or would you freeze them both since they both broke the rule? Please answer, this is something I've been wondering for quite a while. Thanks! :D ~oxthekillersox101
It depends on the severity of the infraction and history of the player, honestly. A longtime player with an account that's had no (or very few) warnings and just slips up once is more likely to get some leeway over a two week old account created by a player who often acts poorly and has a long history of frozen accounts. But, as we said before, it depends on what was done as well. If it was something very serious like scamming someone, having an old account or a newbie one won't make any difference. Remember though, we do expect older accounts to have a better understanding of the rules, too! If we see someone breaking rules on purpose because they think they can "get away with it" due to the age of their account, then we aren't going to be happy with them.
