You peer at the strange door in the ground, wondering if you should really journey into the cavern. You hear bubbly laughter erupting from below and decide to take a chance. You open the door and look down.
A stairway leads you safely to the bottom, where a small meerca awaits. "Welcome," he says happily, "To Syphye's Savees!"
He turns around and bounces towards another door. "This is where you can find all the information you need about fosters that are staying here, as well as a few guidelines to follow and a questionnaire to fill out if you're interested in any of them." He then shoves the massive door open, beckoning for you to follow.
."My name is Syphye," the enthusiastic meerca states as he leads you into a surprisingly clean-looking room. Not what you'd expect to see in an underground cavern. "I run this whooooole adoption agency, with the help from some of my friends, of course." You aren't sure how, but he's sitting in a chair now, with a desk in front of him. "Want to hear something neat?" he asks, looking eager.
Skip the Story?
After seeing your consenting nod, Syphye begins his story. "You see, I wasn't always a maraquan meerca. When I was first born on Mystery Island, I was just a plain red meerca. I remember all the activity in that place...so energizing!" He pauses, smiling happily. "But then, my parents shipped me off to a training school located on Krawk Island." You can't be sure, but the tone of voice that seemingly happy meerca sounded almost sad. "On the bright side, I never actually had to go to that school," he shrugs, perking up.
."The boat we were on was attacked by
pirates!" Syphye exclaims, bouncing once in his seat. "That's when I met my best buddy,
Tryste, but he was only a itty bitty wittle puppy back then~
Anyways," he continues, getting back on track. "The ship was looted, and sometime in the chaos, the mast was broken and the hull cracked, causing the ship to sink. Luckily there weren't any jetsams nearby..."
He shudders. "Tryste was awesome, even back then. He had tossed me a map right before he hopped back onto his own ship. So~ I was sent to find help. Being a meerca and all, my tail was very helpful for flotation and swimming. I used the nifty map to swim towards Mystery Island, but I tired out before I got there. Using my tail, I set up a little raft for me to rest in."
It's too late to stop his story now. You wait in silence as he reminisces. "Next thing you know, that crazy scorchio was zapping me with a ray! That's how I lost my tail," he adds glumly. "I was all different species and colors...an island acara one day, a blue shoyru another.
Finally, I was reverted back to my old meerca species with a lucky zap. 'cept I was maraquan this time."
He sighs, beginning to grow tired with talking about his memories. What a short attention span. "I escaped after that, and now run this place. I had some adventures with Tryste along the way (I mean, c'mon! I broke him out of his pirate captivity!), and
Corpheld and
Lyhty are my friends too. They've helped me out plenty of times. They're like my family now."
."Anyways," Syphye stretches his stubby arms and scratches his bristly head. "On to what you're actually here for. The fosters! All of these pets are the unlucky victims of the ray that I've been able to rescue. I save as many as I can, you know?" He shuffles through some papers and pulls out a list with pictures. "And here they are!"
A small snicklebeast wanders in, a notebook in his hand. He places it lightly on Syphye's desk, then exits. "That's Finlay," Sy says, flipping open the book. "He's my petpet. He's quiet, but when it comes to exploring, we have lots of fun. Plus, he's really helpful with running this place." He stops turning the pages and pushes a notebook towards you. "These are some guidelines. They're really helpful if you want to apply for one of these fosters here. Ariel wrote them, as she's the one who handles all the behind-the-scenes sort of work. :)"
1. The account the foster will be sent to must be over 4 months old. It's a neopets rule. I
am willing to wait for your account to age if you have great owner potential. :)
2. You must have space on your account. I don't want you to pound a pet in order to adopt my foster.
3. Any and all types of applications are accepted. Be it petpage, neomail, or written out on your user-lookup - as long as it's been done with effort, I'll accept it.
4. Everyone has a chance to adopt a foster of mine. I'm looking for an honest and genuine person that will love and care for the pet. You don't have to be an amazing artist or writer - I can tell a good person when I see one. (:
5. I look at the condition of your accounts. Even if your application is stunning and perfect, if your current accounts are not taken care of, you will not get the pet. I base my decision of a new owner not only on their app, but how they take care of their current pets.
6. It may be a good idea to complete the questionnaire. It is not mandatory, but feel free to add on to it if you'd like. :) Make sure to put some effort into your answers, and be completely honest.
7. Send everything - notifications, questions, applications, etc. - to my main account, clumsify! You will most-likely
not get a response if you neomail anywhere else. Also, please be sure to notify me if you plan to apply. :)
8. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I don't bite, and I'm happy to clear up any confusion you may have. :D

."Please put the name of the foster somewhere in your neomail subject, and then send this to us. Or, you can put it on a petpage and give us the link. ^^ Be creative!"
1. Which foster are you hoping to adopt?
2. List your current accounts. Please tell me about any frozen accounts, and the reason why they were frozen - don't worry, I'll understand. Everyone makes mistakes. Also, which account would the pet reside on?
3. Tell me about yourself - the better I know you, the more comfortable I'll feel sending my foster to live with you. :) (Some examples: How active are you, how long have you been playing, what you do with your free time, etc.)
4. Will this foster have a character? If so, what is it?
5. What are your reasons for wanting to adopt (insert pet name here)?
6. Do you have any future plans for this pet? If so, what are they?
7. Why should I choose you as the new owner? (Feel free to brag here. :P )
8. Will this pet ever be traded?
9. Pick one pet out of your current pets as an example of how my foster would be treated.

If I am chosen, I, (your name) , pledge to be the best owner I can be for my new Neopet, (pet's name) . I understand all the sadness that he/she has already been through, and so I will provide everything he/she needs to be happy. I promise to be a friend to my new Neopet and never ever ever put him/her through the pain of neglect or abandonment again.
Syphye tries to tidy up the miniature mess he created on his desk, but decides against it. Instead, he looks up at you and beams. "Thank you for stopping by!" He shakes your hand. "We're so glad you came. Please, don't hesitate to neomail Ariel. We promise to get back to you as soon as possible." He hops out of his chair and bounces towards the exit. "See you around!"
