Packrat Avatar Tips!

Hi and welcome to my tips! I don't know how much this is going to help anyone, but I'll put it up anyway in case anyone starting out wants a few tips on how I got my SDB Pack Rat Avatar. Also, I'll mention something called Project PackRat. This is a website that helps you keep track of items you've got. Do a google search and you can find it instantly. I can't link it from this pet page. Sorry! Okay, that being said, on with the guide. :D

Before you start: here's some info on the PackRat Avatar:
  • You need 1000 unique (different) items to obtain this
  • Once you have them, view your safety deposit box and the avatar will be right above your items (after the text).
  • According to AvatarLog, the avatar was released January 23rd 2004


    • Onto the tips. ^_^
    1.) Be prepared to spend some NP. I started out with about 100 items in my Safety Deposit Box. I also had about 96,000 NP in the bank. I highly recommend having a good amount of NP in the bank before you start. Besides, when you start collecting a good amount of interest, (Say, 100 np a day) that's at least one item you're getting money for. Make sense?

    2.) Be patient! Like I said, I started off with about 100 items and it's taken me a few months to get this avatar. I wasn't been as dedicated as I could have been, but unless you have a serious amount of NP, it's going to take some time.

    3.) Search for the lowest price! Even if you have to search ten times, get a decent price on all of your items. Remember, you're spending a lot of Neopoints, but unless you plan on keeping and using all of your items, you get your NP back!

    4.) Buy more than one item per shop. Also, see the tip after this one for further explanation. I usually have three tabs open when item hunting (I use Firefox, so if you us IE, you can have three separate windows). They are: the Project PackRat site, my Safety Deposit Box, and then one last tab for the shop wizard. Let's say I'm searching for an item that's minimum price is 99 NP and I buy the item I'm looking for, but I see something else for half the price that I know I've never seen before-BUY IT. Chances are, it'll be either worth more and/or an item you don't have. However, this is also why I have my Safety Deposit Box tab. If you're weary about buying multiple items, check there first. Is this a little unclear? See the next tip for more clarification.

    5.) A note about Project PackRat. This site is based on prices. Let's say I'm looking for Black Nail Varnish which is listed to be about 120 NP. And then let's say I stumble upon (in the same shop) a War Chia Top which is selling for 20 NP. Now, I know I hadn't seen the War Chia Top prior to the Black Nail Varnish, so chances are it's either worth more Neopoints or an item that wasn't listed at PPR. I always buy items I haven't seen that sell for lower than the amount I'm searching at.

    6.) Get other avatars. A lot of my items came from buying things to get other avatars like the Codestones Avatar, the Mad About Orange avatar, the I'm Smelly avatar, etc. Any avatar that requires you to have a number of items. Killing two birds with one stone is always helpful.

    7.) Free items. There are some items you do NOT have to buy. This includes items you can easily get from the Advent Calendar, Monthly Freebies, Underwater Fishing, Faerieland Healing Springs, free jelly and omelette's. A tip about omelettes, get as many different kinds as you can and at least three of each. 2/3 of an omelette and 1/3 of an omelette both count as one separate item! So, you can have a sausage omelette, 2/3 of a sausage omelette and 1/3 of a sausage omelette and it counts as three different items. The same is true for jelly. If you get two of the same, keep one whole one and then have one of your pets eat half. You now have two items! Just keep your eye out for free items. Heck, I created a Yellow Tuskaninny and when I went to my items, I had a Lemon Tuskaninny Pop in there. You never know where you may find some. :)

    8.) Buy from The Neopia Food Store. If you're not worried about spending the least amount of NP, go there and buy anything within your budget range. I always shop there because MOST (not all), but MOST of the items there sell for higher than what you can haggle them for. Maybe this is true for other shops, I don't know. I do know that I bought a rare shirt for 1800 NP from the clothing shop to get an avatar and when I looked up it's value in the shop wizard, it only sold for 400 NP. -_- You can also get good discounts on items from the Igloo Garage Sale, but the Food Store has more items and is a little more dependable and usually has more items for sale.

    9.) Sell duplicate items. Ya know how those beautiful codestones just magically fall into your lap sometimes? SELL them if you already have that one. Like I said before, unless you plan on keeping and/or using your items, they are worth NP! A codestone can get you quite a few items in return.

    10.) Collect sets. This is a bit more for people not using Project PackRat, but it could be for anyone really. Try to collect sets of things: Lipstick, Collars, Faeries, Caps, Tops, Plushies, etc. You'd be surprised at how fast items can rack up.

    11.) Extra note. If you're really worried about neopoints, here's a good way to get lots fast: Pick 10 of your favorite games. Play them three times, earning at least 300-350 per game. After the ten games, you should have anywhere from 9,000 NP to 10,500 NP!
