NEWS! As Of 5/13/08

Unfortunately I learned that the quick links do not work on Firefox :(. I'm sorry guys, you'll have to scroll. But for those of you using IE no worries.

I updated the linking to me section, that way there is less confusion about linking to me. But still if you have any questions feel free to neomail me.

Thanks again to everyone who uses this guide and gives me feedback! It's great to know that it helps!

This guide will be devoted to just Gravity Mode. Gravity Mode requires the most skill to play; however, no other mode will allow you to earn amazing scores. If you want to earn 1250 points and get the avatar, or if you want a trophy for Meerca Chase II you should play Gravity Mode. You can get a score over 2000 without gravity mode, but don't count on getting 4 fish neggs in a game. I've played over 30,000 games and I've only gotten two fish neggs in a single game once. And trust me, Gravity Mode really isn't as hard as it seems.

The Basics of Gravity Mode

Getting Gravity Mode

Unlocking Gravity Mode is simple. After you load the game and you are on the select mode screen (where you can see options such as freestyle, hard, maze etc...)(In other words the first screen you see after the game loads) type in superextrahypergravitymode. If you type that successfully you will be able to select Gravity Mode. Congratulations your almost there!

I've gotten at least 100 neomails saying that "I've typed in what you said and it's not working." If you typed it in and it isn't working chances are you had a typo. It's a very long code and I have to type it 4 or 5 times to get it to work sometimes. If you still can't get it to work check to see if you have caps lock on. It has to be all lowercase, EXACTLY AS I TYPED IT which also means that there are no spaces between words.

Negg Values for Gravity Mode

Playing Gravity Mode

At first Gravity Mode may seem hard, if not impossible; however, Gravity Mode is actually much easier than the other modes. So I'll start off with the basics of playing gravity mode, and then later on I'll explain certain strategies that I find advantageous to master, and I'll even throw in some screen shots to illustrate, because it's hard to teach somebody how to play a game without actually illustrating it.

Where to place your fingers: In Gravity Mode the down arrow has no use at all, literally. So I play (I'm a righty) by placing my middle finger on the up arrow, my index finger on the left arrow, and my ring finger on the right arrow. I find this way much easier than any other method and it is less complicated than using two hands. If you use two hands your more likely to confuse yourself and hit a wrong key. Stick with one hand: you have 5 fingers and there are only three functioning keys that you are responsible for.

Pick one direction and stick with it: I prefer to go around the black hole counterclockwise simply because going around counterclockwise means I use my index finger rather than my ring finger. Either way, going around in one direction has many benefits.
  1. By going around in the same direction in one game you will become familiar with your current game. And after going through the same two neggs ten times it's less likely that you'll hit into them.

  2. By going around in one direction you really only have to use two fingers. By using the up arrow and (in my case for counterclockwise) the left arrow you can continue to go around in circles for days with just two keys. The right arrow should only be used if you pressed the left arrow too much or later in the game when maneuvering the Meerca is intense.

  3. You will not hit your tail. And yes, trust me, it is very easy to have your tail get in the way when you have 50‡ neggs attached to the Meerca. By going around in a circle you will be able to make the widest possible path, so your tail won't become a hassle and ruin a game of 1300. You'll see what I mean in the following screen shot. A tail like that is impossible to manage unless you go around in one direction.

Going in one direction is a rule to stick with 97% of the time. However, there are a few times when it's beneficial to turn around and go the other way, but usually if you have to turn around it means that you're going to lose soon. The first situation will only happen towards the end of a game. This happens when you have neggs that are forming a line from the black hole to the side of the screen. It's very rare that this happens, but with 25 red neggs on the screen it could be possible that you simply can't get past a section. If this happens, and only if it's MUCH EASIER TO GO THE OTHER WAY, try to turn your Meerca around and continue in a moon shape, simply avoiding the red negg blockade. (However if you look closely there is more than enough room between the red negg next to the black hole and the negg to the left of it).

The second situation is basically a last resort. If the game is getting extremely hard with all of the red neggs and a rare negg (lets say grey and up) spawns behind you, go for the negg ONLY IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU WOULD LOSE BEFORE YOU GO AROUND AGAIN. The only time I resort to doing this is when I have a tail of 45‡ neggs and the red neggs are scattered all over. For example; in the following screen shot the red neggs are scattered all over and at that point it's nearly impossible to get around the hole without hitting something. So in that case, if a good negg spawned behind my path, I would go for that negg and then lose, rather than risking not getting it at all

Gravity Mode is "Stop 'N Go" For A Reason: If you always hold down the up arrow you're not going to get very far, especially towards the end. As more red neggs are added to the screen it takes more precision to successfully move your Meerca. When this happens just slow it down. Just stop, position your Meerca the way you want it to be pointed and then continue. This technique works best when there are a bunch of red neggs and your movements need to be very precise. For example: in the following screen shot it's more likely that you will hit the two red neggs if you're going fast rather than slow. So to tackle a situation like this, go to a point far away from the black hole as I did, and let your Meerca drift towards the black hole. As you drift rotate your Meerca so that when you press forward he will go directly through the two neggs. BUT REMEMBER! You must take into account the fact that the black hole will be pulling you towards it. So if you're very close to the black hole to counterbalance the force from the hole you must point your Meerca away from the hole slightly. The further you are form the hole the less the force will affect you; thus, the less you will have to modify your path.

Another good point to mention here is that you can actually allow gravity mode to do some of the work for you. For instance, when the Neggs are in or on the black hole they are very hard to get, but if you use the gravity to help you they aren't that hard to get.

Okay now for this technique to work you have to keep a few things in mind. First of all the Meerca has to be pointed away from the black hole. Next, make sure that you will form a V with the position you came from and where the Meerca is going. The steeper the V is the better because it will be easier to overcome the force from the black hole. But if your V is an I, then you're going to run into your tail.

And finally timing is everything. This will take a while to get used to but once you get the hang of it it's not that hard. If you press the up arrow to early you'll miss it and if you miss it too much you'll have to go around the black hole and set yourself up for it all over again. If you press up too late you'll get the negg but you'll be sucked into the black hole. But if you press the up arrow at the right time you'll get the negg and be on your way.

Another point to mention here is that you NEVER stop when you get your second negg. If you stop immediately after you get your second negg it spawns under your Meerca and you will lose. It's very disappointing when you lose on the second negg after getting a fish negg as your first negg.

The fact that the yellow negg spawns directly under you is a major problem when your second negg is directly in the corner and you already have a power negg or a fish negg, as illustrated by the following picture (just pretend it's the second negg and not the first). If that negg was your 10th negg then the easiest way to get it would be to approach the corner, come nearly to a stop, inch up to the negg, and then after you get it rotate your Meerca and continue. However because you can't stop since the second negg will spawn directly under you, you must keep holding down the up arrow key which makes this scenario difficult. Basically you have to try to make the widest turn possible without hitting the sides, which is illustrated by the following screen shot

Neggs in or Near the Center

When you play Gravity Mode it's inevitable that neggs will spawn near the black hole, if not in the black hole. But don't worry, even the neggs that are directly in the middle of the black hole can be gotten (Although it's very rare and I've only managed to do this about 20 times). Below is a screen shot and the area highlighted in white is what I consider to be the area where most players find it very difficult to maneuver the Meerca.

If a negg spawns in that area there are two techniques that can be used to successfully get them. The first technique is explained above in Gravity Mode is "Stop 'N Go" For A Reason. The second technique involves a little more skill, but is much easier and quicker once you get the hang of it. Basically to get a negg that is very close to the black hole you are going to come in parallel to the black hole and by going as fast as possible you won't have to worry about the force from the center as much. HOWEVER, YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT THE BLACK HOLE WILL BE PULLING YOU TOWARDS THE CENTER, SO YOU MUST HAVE YOUR MEERCA POINTED AWAY FROM THE CENTER TO SOME DEGREE IN ORDER TO NOT GET SUCKED IN! Once you get better at this, you can actually continue to circle the black hole, every time coming closer and closer, until finally you grab that negg. As illustrated by the following screen shot you can get amazingly close to the black hole without actually being sucked into it.

Although it looks like I went through the black hole I didn't. My tail was simply dragged into the black hole, but still I was basically on top of the black hole when I attempted to get the negg that was there.

Another situation that can occur, which hopefully won't occur when you have a score of 1000‡ is that the negg will spawn directly in the middle of the black hole, as illustrated below. When this happens you have two options. The first is to figure out which side of the black hole it's closest to (top, bottom, left or right) and then just plunge yourself into the black hole. This isn't really a good idea, unless of course a fish negg or some other rare negg spawns in the black hole. I'd also advise you to do this if you have a score of 1242 and you're going for the avatar and the next negg spawns in the middle. It's better to make sure you get it then to miss it and have to try to get the avatar all over.

However, neggs that are completely surrounded on all sides by the black hole can still be obtained (I've managed to get about 10 of them so far). Basically for this to work, your maneuvering has to be flawless and you need to get as close to the black hole as humanly possible. Follow the technique explained above, and if you do it perfectly (like the above picture) you might just be lucky enough to get the negg and be able to continue!

Improving Your Score

Even if you think your scores are good you can always improve. I used to think that being able to regularly get a score of about 450 was amazing (by regularly I mean basically every game). I felt the same way when I was able to regularly get scores around 630. However I kept practicing and now I can easily get a tail of around 40 neggs and scores regularly around 756. And I'm sure even I can improve my score. So here are a few tips on how to improve your average score.
  1. Practice Practice Practice: Keep playing Meerca Chase II frequently. The more consecutively you play, the more familiar you will become with the game. Thus, you will be able to maneuver the Meerca with greater skill and you will see a huge difference in your scores. I even see this happen every day. In the morning my scores are usually around 500 if I just get yellow neggs. However, after playing for a while I'm able to rapidly send scores of 700‡, simply because I've been playing for an hour or so and at that point I'm used to it.

  2. Experiment! I've never looked at another Meerca Chase II guide before I made this guide, so I was able to come up with all of my techniques by myself. However they didn't all come to me at once. It took hours and hours of game play and experimentation to figure out what worked for me and what didn't. This is especially useful if you're having trouble with neggs close to the black hole. Don't wait for a negg to spawn there to practice and experiment; Just start a game and circle the black hole for as long as you can, trying to get closer and closer to it without being sucked in. If you experiment like this enough, grabbing neggs near the black hole will become second nature and you will never have a problem with them again! And do the same for all scenarios that you're having trouble with, like neggs in the corners, neggs near the side and anything else. Just pretend they are there, and see if you can get them without hitting the side or getting sucked into the black hole.

The World Challenge

I'm working in it! So Give me until the end of July for the text, and August for some screen shots to illustrate!

Odds and Ends About the Avatar

Getting the avatar isn't as hard as it may seem, simply because a fish negg is worth 900 points and then you just need to get another 350 points. But there are still a few tips that will help people get the avatar.

  1. First Three Plays: If you are trying to get the avatar, it must be one of your first three plays for the day. Normally you won't score over 1250 in your first three games, so just don't send your score until you get over 1250 if you really want the avatar.

  2. Wait for a Fish Negg: If you still can't manage to get the avatar just wait for a good game. Keep playing until you get a fish negg and then you will be much more likely to get the avatar in that game. However, don't quit right away if your first few neggs aren't good. You never know, you could get two fish neggs later on. I once got a power negg as my 30th negg and a fish negg around my 40th one. And just keep in mind that a fish negg and a rainbow negg is enough for the Avatar!!!

Odds and Ends About the Trophy

Normally getting a trophy for Meerca Chase II is much harder than getting the avatar, simply because you need scores around 2200. However if you're intent on getting that awesome Meerca Chase II Champion trophy on your lookup you don't have to worry because you still get it with a score of about 1800.

Again keep in mind that to get a score to count for a trophy it must be one of your first three plays of the day, so if you're going for the trophy only send a score that would get you onto the list. Sure a score of 1800 is good, but if that puts you in 26th place and you only have one more score to send don't send it because you wont be awarded a trophy at 11:50 PM NST. But if you're not an amazing player a score of 2500 seems nearly impossible to get, unless your first two neggs are both fish neggs. However, other players can still get trophies by taking advantage of the 1st of the Month High Score Table Reset. This feature of Neopets allows nearly anyone with some degree of skill to receive a trophy for any game. Basically here's what happens. On the 1st day of every month the High Score tables are cleared out to allow new gamers to place and receive trophies. But also remember that trophies are awarded at 11:50 PM NST. Basically that means that if on the first day of the month you can get a decent score in those first 24 hours, then you will be awarded a trophy (about 12:30AM NST - 11:50PM NST).

For the reset last month the scores were as follows:
???
???
???

From month to month those scores tend to change (depending upon how many people are trying for the trophies) but they won't change significantly.

Now, if the first day of the month falls on a weekend, you will not have to worry about scores of 2000+ since any score above 1998 will be reviewed. Therefore, just get as close to 1998 as you can and you should have a shiny new trophy by the second of the Month! But if the first day of the month is a weekday, TNT may get around to reviewing the scores, in which case scores of 2000+ will appear on the High Score Table. However it's pretty hard to get above 2000, so I'd say if you have the choice to stop at 1998 or go for a 2000+ score on the first of the month, go for the 2000+. You're going to get a trophy once it's reviewed with a 2000+ score in the very beginning of the month. Good luck!

Frequently Asked Questions and Comments

If you have any questions or comments about my guide, or want to see something added feel free to neomail me and I'll get back to you and even add it to my FAQ section!

  1. Why aren't you on the top of the High Score Table? Well first of all I can't be at the top of the high score table every month. And, there are a bunch of users who are equally as, if not more skilled than me. But more importantly, I normally don't try to get on the High Score Table. I already have the gold trophy, and I play in the MCII World Challenge every day. So unless I get extremely lucky and get two fish neggs within my first few tries, chances are I won't get a score above 2700 in the first few games I play. And even if I did get lucky enough to get a high score I normally stop at 1998. It guarantees me a WC piece and a 10,000 NP win in an open challenge. And that's better than losing at a score of about 2100 and being number 56 or so on the HS table.

  2. If I give you my PW can you get the avatar for me?NO! That would be against the rules and you should never give your PW out to anybody because most likely they will take advantage of your account.

  3. Why do I fall right into the middle when I'm nowhere near the center and when I hit the walls? Just like every other mode (easy medium, hard) if you hit the edges you lose. Gravity mode is no different, so don't get too close to them.

  4. Do you want to be neofriends? As much as I'd love to say I would, I get way too many neofriend requests to simply add everyone who asks. You never know though.

  5. Why doesn't your guide have ferocious negg mode? You do know about that right? Yes, of course I know about ferocious negg mode. However, this guide is intended to help people obtain extremely high scores, which isn't as easy in ferocious negg mode.

  6. What is the code for Ferocious Negg Mode? Type in ferociousneggsareontheloose just as you would superextrahypergravitymode.

  7. Did you know that if you click on the Meerca's left eye a person pops up holding two fish neggs? Yes I did know that. That is simply one of dozens of ways The Phantom Orange Shirt Guy (TPOSG) has put himself into the games he programs. As far as I know it has no effect on getting a fish negg. But if you're superstitious then why not. It wont hurt...

Link to My Guide

As you can imagine, the more people who link my guide, the happier I am, so I'm pretty flexible with how my guide is linked. Feel free to make the Meerca Chase II avatar a clickable link to my guide, or the name of the game a clickable link to my guide. Really I'm fine with anything as long as it doesn't make it seem like it's not my guide!
