These are all common questions I see, whether it be on the Neoboards, or in my Neomail inbox. This guide is intended to help you better understand petpets and what they do.

How to attach a petpet

First off, you need a petpet! As an example, I'll use an Angelpuss.

Next, go to your inventory, and click on the Angelpuss. The screen below will pop up, and you will choose "Give pet to (petname)".

Congratulations! You've successfully attached a petpet. Now, you need to name it! First, you'll need to go to the Quick Reference page. Find the pet with your Angelpuss, and click on the petpet.

That will then take you to the page where you can name your petpet. In the text box in the image below where it says "no name", change that to the name of your choice and click "Rename no name".

Great job! You have now bought a petpet, attached it to your pet, and even named it!

Petpet Lab Ray

The most common questions I hear are about the petpet lab ray. First of all, what IS it?

These are what the pieces look like. The petpet lab ray is used to zap your petpets, and many things can happen. It can change your petpet's species or name, can increase or decrease levels, or it can turn your petpet into a pile of soot, or worse, make it disappear completely! It is advised you use a cheap petpet for this.

Please note that you can ONLY use the Petpet lab ray if you have the ORIGINAL lab ray first! Those pieces are called "Secret Laboratory Map" and the whole set costs around 600,000 Neopoints. Once again, you can ONLY use the Petpet lab ray if you have the ORIGINAL lab ray first!

If you've read the red text above and you DO have the original lab ray, you can click here for a quick link to the Ray. Then the screen below will appear.

You'll need to click the little circle below the petpet to choose it to zap. Be careful to choose the right one, as you may lose a very expensive petpet if you select the wrong one! If you're absolutely sure, click "Zap the poor petpet!" to see what happens.

As you'll see from the image above, my Gobbler has been zapped into a Pink Kimbi. That's just one of many options that can happen. When I can zap again, I'll post more screenshots of what else can happen.

Now, take a look at the image below:

See how I have circled the little lightning bolt? This means that my petpet has been zapped by the Petpet lab ray. With a zapped petpet, they WILL NOT be counted for the PPL, but they CAN be used to receive the avatars where you have the petpet equipped for a certain amount of days (Harris, Huggy, Gruslen, etc.). If you remove the petpet, it will be reverted back to its original form; in my case, it will turn back into a Gobbler.

Another common question I've seen is about the Krawk petpet. If your petpet is zapped into a Krawk by the ray, you CANNOT use it to create a Krawk. Think of the petpet lab ray as a costume of sorts. You zap your petpet, which changes into another species; a costume. If you remove the petpet, it's like taking off the costume. You still end up with the same petpet you started with.

Lab ray-only colors

As far as I know, there are 4 different colors that are lab ray only, and they are Chocolate, Strawberry, Jelly, and Gold. There are no paint brushes for these colors, so you'll just have to get lucky and keep zapping until you get the color you want.

Petpet Avatars

Below is a list of all the avatars that require you to own a petpet.

Buy an Angelpuss, equip it to your Neopet, and go to the Quick Reference. Scroll down to see the event.

Buy a Pepito and feed it to your Jetsam.

Buy a Drackonack, buy "Cheese" from the shop wizard, and have both in your inventory and refresh a few times.

Buy a Slorg and have it attached to your pet for 101+ days. View that pet's lookup on the 101st day or later to receive the avatar.

Buy a Mazzew and have it attached to your Neopet for 250+ days. View that pet's lookup on the 250th day or later to receive the avatar.

Buy a Gruslen and attach it to your pet for 100+ days, then go to that pet's lookup.

Buy a Harris and attach it to your pet for 100+ days, then go to that pet's lookup.

Buy a Huggy and attach it to your pet for 100+ days, then go to that pet's lookup.

Cheap Petpets I've seen a lot of people ask, "What's the cheapest petpet?" Here is a list of petpets under 5k. I would include pictures, but there are so many petpets here that it would take forever for the images to load. Please note that prices are subject to change.
