Welcome to Pathways To Success!

Welcome, humans, to Pathways To Success. I will call it PTS from now on. It is a site where people can help other people by being a "philosopher" and answer a few questions about owning a site. You do not need to own a site to become a philosopher though. So, become a part of PTS and help other people who needs it the most. Those who are thinking of making a site of their own should read through all of the philosophy of a person so they wouldn't make mistakes in their site, so it will be perfect. Thanks for checking out PTS and come again soon. ^-^

Notice: There might be some grammar or spelling errors in a few interview. It's an interview and not suppose to be corrected so don't tell me about it. Unless it's really annoying, I will change it.

How hard is it to own a site?
Starting up is always the most difficult. With my sites, I tend to gravitate more towards the graphical areas. Which would mean that in order to do it well, I would have to have a high number of high quality graphics, which, to be honest, can be quite tough to maintain. In the example of a customs site, I have to weight my time in real life versus the time in Neopets, and that's always an issue when owning a site. Finding affiliates and listers for KoB and Consensus weren't really difficult, seeing as how people actually already know me, and readily accept me as a result. Kind of makes me feel like I'm cheating, but hey. xD Regular updates are easy for me, because everyday, it seems like I do something. xD

Is activeness in a site important?
I'd say it's most probably how often you update, how often you add stuff. I'd say at the very least, once in a week. Doesn't have to be everday; just let people know the site's still up. Add new content every now and then - maybe at least one big addition in a couple of months.

Is literacy important?
It definitely is. I mean, I personally cannot read through something that has tons of mistakes on it. One or two is fine. It's the same concept when role-playing, or writing a story. Literary capability is important in bringing points across, garnering respect, and also shows effort.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
The first thing I base accepting affiliates on is my first impression. If I don't feel compelled to stay at their site once a visit it, it's an auto no-no. After which, I look at their content. If it's at least decent, that's the second pass. Finally, I look at their link buttons. Ugly and barely legible? Nope. Otherwise, they've passed my Affiliate Test.

My Main Philosophy:
As for the new site makers - I urge you to consider your strengths before making a site. I see a lot of sites springing up now, and I can't say that their quality is good at all. If you're not happy with your work, or satisfied at the very least, or have been told that your work is good by someone non-biased, chances are, it's not that good. So. Consider that before making a site.

How hard is it to own a site?
Well, I think it depends entirely on what sort of site you choose. I don't find it hard starting a site (except sometimes when I have difficulties building a layout) but the novelty of a new creation carries me through the beginning. And I quite enjoy monotonous aspects like adding affiliates and so on. Now I think about it, the most taxing sort of site for me would be the ones where you have to be constantly creating new material (like untaken names, or graphics).

Is activeness in a site important?
I'm constantly full of guilt because I feel like I'm neglecting this site or the other. x) I'm not sure it's avoidable. And, again, it all depends on the kind of site you're managing... although I think there's a point when, if there's been no sign of updates for a while, visitors might feel uncertain and not know whether it's still okay to neomail about things. So I think signs of life are important for that, at least.

Is literacy important?
It's important to be professional, so it's important to be literate. =3

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I don't honestly know when the last time was that I asked to be an affiliate of someone; people seem to ask me often enough that I don't have to. x3 I do draw a line with affiliates if I don't think their site is all that good, but I think even that line I use varies a bit depending on which of my site's somebody is asking about. So I'm not much help on that question.

My Main Philosophy:
I guess... don't let it get you down. Even if it turns out terrible, or people tell you it's not so good. Find out what sort of a site you're best at and get original with it. ;3

How hard is it to own a site?
It depends on what kind of site you own-- certain sites may be more or less difficult than others. It also differs from person to person. I found fontmaking easier than CSS, but someone who has trouble with fonts might have a better time making layouts. Overall, though, I think as long as you're having fun, it isn't very hard to own a site.

Is activeness in a site important?
I'd say that you should be as active as you can on your site. I try to update every day, but I know that isn't always possible. try to leave gaps no bigger than 3 days in your updates-- if you aren't putting recent effort into your site, no one will want to visit. Another problem some site makers have is that they don't have anything to update about. Well, there's a simple solution: come up with an idea for the site, like a new style or layout, and talk about its upcoming. You could also do an affie cleanot or make some changes around the site, just to have something to update about x3.

Is literacy important?
Literacy is /extremely/ important in a site. Think about this-- would you rather enter a site with this introduction: "hey welcom 2 tangible. a site by me kitty i have lots of lyts 4 u 2 use", or this: "Hello, and welcome to Tangible., a site by me, Kitty." Obviously, the second option is much more inviting. I know that a lot of visitors will close out a site if they can't even read the chatspeak. Even if you aren't a great speller, try your best to pick out any errors you might have made... it makes a big difference to people viewing your site. -checks to make sure there are no ironic spelling mistakes-

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
When looking for affiliates, you should only accept high-quality sites. If you're really picky, you could limit your affies to sites under the same category as yours (premades, pixels, etc.). It's okay to say no once in a while if the site isn't good quality. To find affiliates, you could visit a directory and search for sites similar to yours. You could also find a site you like to visit, and ask to be affiliates with them. From there, you could check out their affies, and see if you would want to affiliate any of them.

My Main Philosophy:
My only advice for new sitemakers is to have fun! If you don't enjoy your site, it becomes more of a chore than something you want to keep up with. Don't be afraid to close your site if you don't have time, or if you just don't like it anymore. You should make a site because you want to, and once the fun is gone, there isn't a point to it anymore.

How hard is it to own a site?
The difficulty level of owning a site can be pretty easy, or pretty hard depending on the type of site you own. For example if you own a SOTM that's pretty easy. You just need to put enter sites and tally votes. If you own a custom site, It can get pretty difficult. Some people tend to be very demanding. But, If your work is not very good, than you will not get very many requests therefore making it pretty easy to own a site.

Is activeness in a site important?
When owning a site you have to be pretty active. It won't kill you if you go a day without updating, but it's best to update frequently. Suprisingly enough if you miss a week of updating people will stop visiting your site. Also, it's good to update so people know what's going on and don't have to wonder whether you site is active ot not.

Is literacy important?
Literacy is very important in sites. It's okay to use smilies, but you can absolutely not use chatspeak. If you haven't discovered this yet, most neopians hate chatspeak. If people see a messy site full of stuff like "OMG" they will probably leave. So remeber, instead of using chatspeak actually spell the words out. Sure it takes about 2 seconds more, but it's worth it. Chances are even if your work isn't the best, people might stay longer without all that messy chatspeak.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
Well, for finding listers try to look at a high quality site and see where they were listed. Some popular directories include Soroptimist and Secret Observer. Also, for affilates only select high quality sites. Just because someone is a great person doesn't mean they have a great site. A good place to search for Affilates would be on the HC. A lot of sitemakers lurk there. Another thing is that your affilates should be relevant to your site. If you own a directory you should find other directories to be affilates with instead of a pixel site. Finally, if a site makes you want to leave, you probably shouldn't be affilates with them.

My Main Philosophy:
My advice for the new sitemakers out there is to find out your strengths before making a site. If you only have Ms paint, maybe a graphics site isn't the best for you. Try and read a tutorial before you start creating your site. Also, don't give up. If you learn from your mistakes, chances are you'll make a great site. I actually started out with a really lousy site. One more thing, If your making something like buttons, try looking at other peoples work. Don't completely take their ideas, but get some inspiration and create something unique. ^^

How hard is it to own a site?
It's very hard because you have to be commited to it no matter what. Also, it's hard especially for graphic makers, and premade layout makers, because you have to commit on making those. If you just give up, then what's the point of having a site? :/

Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness. It's very important, because if your guests see that you have practically no content, that means that they won't come back, and they'll think you're not active enough, and visitors wouldn't come back, but you'd want to make them high quality content, right?

Is literacy important?
Yes, proper English matters, because if you talk gibberish, no one will get what you're saying. I myself have grammatical errors sometimes.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I'd get high-quality affies, with 88x31 buttons, because if you get these really bad affies, it will just make your site weak.

My Main Philosophy:
My guide is just have fun! If you get reviewed, and you get below pass, don't give up. Improve your site a whole lot better. Seriously. I had this really bad site in the beginning, and I gave up on it. DX Now, I learned that you should never give up.

How hard is it to own a site?
Owning a site is not that hard if you just do the basics. Get affies, have some good content, whatever. It'll still be called a site, right? But if you want to have a clean, crisp, awesome site, you have to put in extra time to reach that goal. Owning a site can be hard, and that's why only teenagers have on-neo sites. Having a site is going to take up a lot of time.

Is activeness in a site important?
You have to be active for most sites. Review sites, request sites, directories, all those sites that require people neomailing you constantly will make you very active. You have to be on at least once in two days. being on hiatus is an exception, I guess.

Is literacy important?
Of course! If you don't know style, then you shouldn't make graphics, or if you don't know how to use Photoshop of something, don't have a guide on it!

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
Some really good site don't have pretty buttons, but I still accept them. Their site shouldn't have started yesterday, and of course, content and impression. Layout and quality of their sites is usually what I look for.

My Main Philosophy:
Don't get put down by some review. If you do get a bad grade, fix them! WHen you do fix everything, request a re-review. As long as you think your site is great and stands out above the others, then you have a site. Also, you must have a layout. My very first site didn't even have a layout!

How hard is it to own a site?
It all depends on what type of site you own. The easiest to own, in my opinion, would have to be a directory. A graphics site or a review site would have to be the hardest. You just have to choose what type fits you, and your schedule.

Is activeness in a site important?
You need to update often, even if it's to say that you haven't made anything in a while, you still need to explain why and let others know that you still exist.

Is literacy important?
Literacy is very important. You want others to be able to understand waht you are saying, and not appear illiterate. It also makes your site more professional to the visitors, and also the reviewers.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I try to accept sites of high quality or have great potential. If I am asking to be affies with a site, I always ask politely and make sure that I fit their requirements first.

My Main Philosophy:
Don't be intimidated by all of the fantastic sites out there. They all had to start somewhere. You just have to give your site time, and never give up. My site, CitH, was horrible when it first started, now look at it! I'm not saying it's perfect, but it has really improved. And don't be afraid to ask other site makers for help, most would be glad to offer advice to new site makers.

How hard is it to own a site?
At first, yes. I was always worried about finishing things quickly and making my site the best it could be. Soon everything became quantity not quality. I'm running.. I think 4 sites now? Graphics, layouts and customs are always the hardest because there is so much to organize, finish, and update about. Sometimes when I don't spend too much time on my site, it can fall to pieces. Overall, I think that running a site can be difficult if you don't stay ahead and organized.

Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness is really important. These days, I tend to forget to update, and I think I haven't updated jwaesong or Haengbok for at least a week xD Try to update at least every 3 days so visitors know your site has been active.

Is literacy important?
Yes it is extremely important. I haven't seen any good sites use any chatspeak. Most importantly, if you are literate, most of the time people will understand what you are talking about. Being literate also makes the site look more sophisticated -in my opinion- and professional.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
When looking for affiliates, who would you accept and how would you get one? First I looked that the layout is decent. Whether it is a custom, original, or an edited premade. It has to look eye pleasing. If it is a custom, or edited premade, and not one made by yourself, then I have to make sure that the person who made the layout is credited to assure no stolen content. I also look at the link back buttons. If the buttons are low quality, it doesn't have a great impression on the site. Since the buttons are what are going to be displayed on my petpage, they have to be decent. To get affiliates, I first have to finish my site so it matches the quality of the sites of my affiliates. I apply to be affies by neomailing them and add their button if they accept.

My Main Philosophy:
Make a site that you think you'll enjoy running. A site isn't the same without the enthusiasm put into it. I find that if you are enthusiastic about something, everything will turn out in much better quality than how it would if you didn't. Second of all, don't steal. Stealers really irk me, and it isn't really fair to the people who actually spent their time and work on it. Third, be organized. Once I failed to run a graphics site because it was so disorganized xD Make sure you have the time to run the site so it doesn't go on a hiatus every week. There are tons of things that make a good site, but being forgetful me, I have forgotten all of them xD

Amber's Philosophy

How hard is it to own a site?
It depends on what type of site you are making. Some sites require more work than others. A review site would be hard to maintain because you have to update it often with new reviews, and reviews take a long time. A graphics site isn't that hard to maintain because you just update whenever you make new graphics. (:

Is activeness in a site important?
Well, if you never add anything new to your site, people will stop checking back and eventually your site will get less views everyday. Sometimes, I don't make graphics for a while, and I notice that when I check my page's stats, I have less pageviews during that time.

Is literacy important?
Yes! I hate it when I go to a site and can't understand what they are talking about. A few minor errors here and there but using chatspeak and incorrect punctuation/spelling constantly makes you look unprofessional.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I would accept sites who have a lot of pageviews. I check their counters to see if they have at least 1,000 views. That means that their site is pretty popular. The point of affiliates is to get new people to see your site, and you can't do that if nobody visits your affiliate's page. When I want new affiliates, I go out and find the people I want to be affies with and neomail them, that way I can choose my own rather than reject people.

My Main Philosophy:
Layouts are really important. Don't make your own layout if it doesn't look very good. The layout is the first impression; if the layout is messy, doesn't work, or is unattractive, people don't want to stay. If you can't make your own layout, I think it is perfectly fine to get a premade; a lot of sites have CSS or other petpage layouts for you to use, so use them!

How hard is it to own a site?
It can be pretty difficult to own a site. Especially trying to keep it updated because your life can get in the way. You need certain skills to be able to keep a well maintained site such as social skills, organization skills, coding skills, and even graphic skills.

Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness is very important in a site. You need to keep well updated on whats new and whats going on. An inactive site keeps guests from coming back.

Is literacy important?
Yes, literacy is very important. Your guests need to be able to understand you, and you need to be able to communicate with your guests. Chat speak does not help.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I look for affies that show that they are active, and who show kindness with their guests. I also look for affies that prove to be serious about their site. I get affies by asking sites I come across and who comply to my certain requirements. I also put up a form for people to ask ME to be affies.

My Main Philosophy:
Well I suppose the first thing any potential site maker needs to consider is what their strengths are, and what they are really passionate about. They should also consider their schedule, if they know they don't have time to maintain a site, they really shouldn't burden themselves with it. If its something they feel will get to stressful then steer away from it. Think EVERYTHING threw, don't just spontaneously wake up one day and say "I'm going to open up a graphics site today." Plan things threw. Once you do open up a site, be 100% original!

How hard is it to own a site?
Honestly, the level of difficulty of owning a site depends on the type of site that you wish to own. For my site, The Goodie Box, it is not an easy task. To own any site like a directory, review site, or a customs site you need to have a lot of free time set a side to maintain them.

Is activeness in a site important?
Being active in your site is extremely important to me because it shows that you really care about the fact that you own a site. When you update, it informs your visitors that you add things every other day or so, and re-assures them that you don't just push your site aside and forget about it.

Is literacy important?
Literacy is extremely important in a site. If I visit a site and the first thing I see is "Hey guyz watz up welcome to my site lol jk jk!!!!!!!! my name iz _____ and ill b ur person ths evening" I will most definitely click exit in that window because it's not worth wasting my time if I won't be able to understand 70% of the things the owner says. Not to neglect capitalization or punctuation of course. I loathe it when people use poor punctuation or capitalization.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
When I'm looking for affiliates, the first thing I look for is the quality of their content. If it's obviously done in paint I will not request to be affiliates, or will reject their request. I will not be affiliates with people who update their site maybe once a month, or once every six months. You must be active in your site, and add content quite frequently. Picking and chosing your affiliates is something that every site owner has to do, and some people tend to chose them more loosely than others. I choose them very selectively because when people visit my site, I want them to be directed (if they click some of my affiliates' buttons that is), to a site that is of the same quality if not better than my site. This is what people expect of a site that has been up and running for a while.

My Main Philosophy:
(1) Most importantly, get a nice layout. Don't pick something that's completely un-attractive or un-organized. Spend time customizing it and adding your content - a good site should not have been created over night. (2) Check your spelling and grammer - or better yet, have someone else check it for you (after you've checked it, that is). Like I stated above, literacy is very important so please make sure everything makes sense.(3) Get affiliates, become listed in a few sites, and advertise on the boards in your signature. This will get your site off the ground... assuming that your site is good enough to get off the ground. (4) Be professional, but not cold. When talking to your visitors via neomail, don't be completely stone-hearted. Have some personality why don't ya? It's nice to have a warm-hearted site owner because this will draw people in to you and your site. If you're un-friendly to your visitors, people might not want to communicate with you again - if you own a customs site, you might not get their business again if you're cold-hearted.

How hard is it to own a site?
It really depends on your site expertise, finesse, dedication, and free time. If you /love/ having a site, then it's easy. If it's a struggle for you to make time for sites and it's not that fun, then sitemaking is hard. But really, it's not hard. =]

Is activeness in a site important?
I know I, for one, totally /abhor/ "inactive" sites. If nothing's being updated, then there are dead/outdated links everywhere and it's just not a nice experience. It shows that you don't care about your site - so why should the visitor?

Is literacy important?
Definitely. If you can't spell, then nobody will want to read what you've written. I hate spelling mistakes, and I immediately jet out of a site with too many of them.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
First, to get affies, you have to advertise. To advertise you can to do it on the Help Chat (or whatever board pertains to your site) or get listed at directories. (Like mine: /~Soroptimist =3) Or you can, of course, ask someone to be your affiliate instead of waiting to be asked yourself. Many people accept low-quality affies, which shouldn't be the case. Affies should be /selective/ to good-quality sites only. Yeah, maybe the owner's nice, but WHO likes looking at a bad site?! Let alone /affiliating/ with them. And of course, low-quality sites accept other low-quality sites, so it's a never-ending chain. Make your site spiffy, people!!

How hard is it to own a site?
The first leap into the mainstream, or neoboards, always seems to be the hardest. When I was first getting SP off the ground, I was sort of swaying. Should I post about it or should I put up more pixels to bring more appeal. Should I do this, this and this, but you have to remember that though you are trying to keep people interested, to not over do it in one go. In the beginning you should start off slow, but not snail slow. Get suggestions, comments, affiliates and directories. If you can take harsh criticism, then ask for it, don't dance around the idea. The comments can be more helpful, than hurtful and you'll learn a lot from this.

Is activeness in a site important?
You want to make your site look active, updating every 1 to 3 days is ideal, but if you cannot update during that span of time, don't leave people guessing what happened! Make sure to leave some sort of note, somewhere it can be seen so the visitors have an idea. "Okay, they are doing something within their guild." or "They went on vacation to visit family." A note of absence is better than a note of "Oh, lol, I forgot about this.

Is literacy important?
I like some grammar to be there, of course, not everyone speaks English natively, but if da typ iz liek dis. You'll probably not have regular visitors, if any at all. Make the effort to sound like you have some general idea of grammar and what it means to make sense. If you are still unsure, ask around, get someone to proof read the site for you.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
Admitly, I'm picky. Your affiliates reflect on you. When picking affiliates, I try to pick high-quality sites with good content, organized layout, updates regularly, and generally aren't snobby. If you're looking for affiliates, try the help chat. Everyday there can be more than ten sites advertising, so you'll always have someone there that may accept your request. If they don't, then don't make a scene about it, ask for suggestions of improvement.

My Main Philosophy:
Don't let it break your heart. Bad/low reviews aren't the end of the world, it could be the opportunity of a new door opening. Also, be original. Copying and pasting url of images from other sites and claiming as your own is not being original, its theft! Have fun, have a personality and don't forget to advertise!

Very! People HATE reading chatspeak. They just can't take you seriously if every other word you say is lol or omg.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
The whole point of having an affie is to get more people to visit your site. People will see your button on your affie's page and want to go visit. If your affie has 50 other affies then your button gets lost in a tiny scrollbox among 50 other buttons! Not good. No one will visit you! You should be affies with good quality sites that have 30 or fewer affies. Better chances of people coming to your site = good advertising = good affie. (:

My Main Philosophy:
Find something your interested in and go from there. If you have a lot of opinions then make a review site. If you like art & design make a graphic site. Even if your not that good at first, by making the site you will be able to practice & get better! (:

Quite hard, because of the work it entails. Like choosing a layout, colour scheme, content, originality, site name, etc. But site making is very rewarding to see how everything came together. ^-^

Is activeness in a site important?
Well, I go to sites because I'm excited see what the site maker does next. If the site isn't updated much, or there's nothing new, I will most likely stop coming because I feel like they neglected their site, or wasn't very into site making anymore.

Is literacy important?
Of course! It shows you actually care about your site. It's very professional too. (:

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I only accept high quality affies, because it says something about your site. Like if your a high-quality site, but affiliated with low-quality sites, it probably won't make a good impression. By high quality, I mean if the layout, colour scheme & content is all very nice. When I look for affiliates, I would like to be with affies if I really like their site, or respect them.

My Main Philosophy:
Advice #1: Be original~! Give a site idea a new flare, or think of an idea no one has thought of yet. It's fun to see how everything comes together.
#2: Have fun! Start off with something you like to do, like making graphics. If you like your site keep going!
#3: Work hard! Don't worry, it'll pay off. ^-^

Well, it all depends on what kind of site you have, and what kind of time your have. You also need to have lots of patience and you need to be able to take constructive criticism gracefully. If you enjoy having a site and you have the time and dedication needed to be able to successfully run a site, then having a site is easy. Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness is EXTREMELY important! If you walk into a site and all of the links are outdated, and the layout is old and stale-looking, and the owner hasn't made any changes to the site in months, how interesting would that be? Even just adding a new affiliate a day or just updating each day is better than nothing! Don't try to do something like change your layout each day. Pace yourself.

Is literacy important?
Oh course! If your site has a cute, inviting introduction with good literacy, then people feel invited into your site! If you simply say something like "Hey. This is my site." people feel you are distant, and that you don't care whether people like you site or not.

Is activeness in a site important?
I know I don't really update my sites enough, but it is really important. If you let your site/s collect dust, it could give your visitors the impression that you don't care. Although updating is hard for some people to fit in, try your best to update once a week. I suggest that instead of just writing what's new to the site, you give a bit of additional information; for example, what your plans are for the site.

Absolutely, it's important to show that you care as your visitors will pick up on the effort you put in. You may care about your site but use ch4tsp3ak and spell incorrectly, but it doesn't mean other people will necessarily get an ultra-good impression.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I ask and accept the sites who've inspired me, who's sites I'm amazed by, and the quality sites that I also think could use some advertizing. I don't believe it's fair to turn an affie-requester away, therefore, if I don't want to accept the site, I'll just ignore the neomail.

How hard is it to own a site?
I honestly think it is extremely hard to own a site if you don't put any effort into it. If, however, you are extremely dedicated to your site and add tons of stuff every day, it's not hard at all! Sometimes, life gets in the way of your site and it makes it extremely hard to update your site. This I am sure has happened to every site maker. However, they don't give up! If you really care about your site, you would try the best that you could to find a way around your problem to take care of your site. This would show how dedicated you really are to your site. And owning a site has it's ups and downs. There are easy parts and then there are hard parts. You just have to know how to handle each part, easy or hard, and you will be on your way to becoming a great site maker!

Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness is very important because people want to know, first of all, how dedicated you are to your site and if they can count on you to add something new. This is why an updates section is very important, because it lets people know the last time you added something to your site. Its also important because if they want to, lets say, get reviewed by you and the last time you were on was 3 years ago, they wouldn't send in the form to you because you hadn't been on in so long! To sum it up, activeness is important because it lets people know that you're there! xD

Is literacy important?
Literacy is very important in a site. U rly wudnt want 2 go round taukin leik dis, wood ja? xD When you open up your site, you are basically having it open so that everyone can see it. You aren't having it limited to only a few people. And I know for a fact that lots and lots of people absolutely hate chatspeak. There are, however, many others that enjoy using it better than just talking in normal grammar. That is the reason you go to school and learn grammar, so that you can learn how to talk and spell properly instead of using little symbols and parts of words to get the meaning out of what you are trying to say. And honestly, when you type in chatspeak, there are many people (including me ^^) that have no clue how to read it. And also, on most review sites that you might have your site reviewed at, they mark down points if you talk in chatspeak and not normal grammar. So, the main point is, that literacy is key in having a golden site.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
Affiliates (or Affies as everyone else calls them) are a good way to advertise your site. Especially if you are affies with a really good site that everyone knows about, they will think, "Wow, if they are affies with this amazing site, their site must be amazing, too!" But, for other people to think that, the fact must be true. I've learned this lesson the hard way: If tons of people everyday ask you to be affies with them on their site, and all they ever did on their site was post icons from Photobucket for people to use, or make graphics that just have words on them without any pictures or designs, and you accept their requests, with your great site people are going to go to your affie's sites and find out that they are not as amazing as they thought they were going to be. So when receiving affie requests, you must be careful about who you choose to be affies with you. They must have good quality sites so when people that are visiting your site click on the button, they are a good quality site like yours! Now, you don't have to only accept the absolutely amazing sites that request to be affies. You would just need to steer clear of the "wanna-be sites" as I call them. And also, when you are applying to be affies with other sites, you must keep in mind that the site is basically helping you to get more views, so the site must be popular and have quality content also.

How hard is it to own a site?
Owning a site can be easy or hard depending on what type of site it is and whether it is known. Graphic and request sites tend to be a bit harder, because you have to put in work, and more people want to request stuff like that. Premades are semi-hard, because you have to spend time coding. But if you know how to code, it can be pretty fun, and there is no time limit to get your coding done! Pixel sites are easy if you don't have requests. You can create them on your own time, and it uses your imagination! Basically, you get the idea.

Is activeness in a site important?
Being active is very important, because if you weren't, people would lose interest. Imagine TNT stopped updating neopets. No new items, possibly no restocking of shops, no plots, games, etc. Would you stay and keep playing on neopets? No. That's why activeness is important! We continue playing neopets because it is constantly updated, and very fun and interesting!

Is literacy important?
Literacy is definitely important. First, who can read 5tUff L1k3 Th15? It is understandable if there are a few spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, but try to keep it neat. More people can understand normal English (or other languages) rather then Chat Speak.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
First, to get affiliates, you must start off having a fully developed site. That means not all of the content, but a decent amount. You need to be updating regularly, and have an interesting (or plain and simple) layout. Then, you go to the site you would like to be affiliates with, and look for a form. Most sites have a form to fill out, with sections like Name, Site, URL, and Why Do You Want to be Affiliates?. If they do not have a form, a nice neomail to the owner saying your name, site name, and url and why would be a perfect made "form" but make is sound like a letter. "Dear ----, My name is Chip and I have a site called Kingdom Reviews (/~blueberryjellyroo). I would love to be affiliates, I was just STUNNED by your site! ^^ -Chip. I tend to be easy on who I accept as affiliates. I understand that there are younger players who don't always know how to run I site, so I love adding sites that may be young, but need a little hand at advertising. And also, definitely accept sites that you go to often. You like those, right?

My Main Philosophy:
I suggest to make a site when you know you will have time, like start it in the summer, for example. And make one you think you can handle! It takes time to get used to, but ends up being great fun. A way to decide what type of site you want to be is to look at sites you love! They are always great inspiration. Good luck with your sitely journey!!

Um... I think its kinda hard...

Is activeness in a site important?
I think activness is important because you need to keep your viewers updated on whats going on with the site and all that.

Is literacy important?
Literacy is EXTREMELY important in a site because when your are literate your viewers will understand what you're saying on your site and chatspeak is just all messy and hard to read.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
Well, when you're looking for affiliates you should always look for a site that has quality in it. One that has a nice layout and has nice content.

My Main Philosophy:
Well, first of all never give up on your site. And try to keep your viewers up to date on whats going on. Its always important to have your site organized and such.

How hard is it to own a site?
Well, it depends on what kind of site you own. Since this is my first site, I shouldn't be the one you are asking. I say review sites so far are pretty easy.

Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness is a necessity. If you are not active you could have requests and other neomails piling up. If you are going on a hiatus, that's another story. People will think you don't care about your site if you are not active.

Is literacy important?
Yes! It is not proper to say thing like, l8er or luv or btw. It is also not professional.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
Well, when first starting you should except all affies, unless you can tell it is just a waste of space. Later on though, you should clean out your affies. You should deffinatly ask to be on other peoples affies to get your site out there.

My Main Philosophy:
Start with something your good at. If you can deal with graphics, do a graphic site. If your me, somebody who knows nothing about coding start with something easy like a directory or reviews. Get a nice premade layout or get someone to make one for you. Have fun though, if you don't like what you are doing, don't do it.

How hard is it to own a site?
It all depends on what kind of site you decide to run. I started out with my graphics site, Dark Light. It was hard to get it off the ground since it was my first site and since it barely had any content on it. Plus, most of what was on it wasn't very good. But after I became better at making graphics, it all became much easier. Review sites are fairly easy to set up, but they require a lot of time. Good reviews take a while to do. Directories are by far the easiest sites to maintain. It's kind of hard getting them started, but once you get a few affiliates and get it listed in other places, you should be able to get it going.

Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness is extremely important! Why? Because you need to be able to answer all the lovely neomails that pile up in your inbox. People need to know you're alive so they can have their questions answered and messages replied to. If you own a site that takes any requests at all, which would be almost every site imaginable, you need to be active to answer those requests. You also need to be active to check for dead links, keep up with filter changes(seeing as how TNT loves to change them), and keep your site alive. Sites with "dead" owners tend to die.

Is literacy important?
It's is highly important. Not everyone understands chatspeak nor does it look very professional. Your visitors have to be able to understand what it is you are saying, especially if there are rules on your site. Reviewers mark down for "illiteracy" of any kind. They do this because a reviewer views your site as a visitor and judges whether or not they would like to re-visit your site or not. A site covered with chatspeak will mostly likely lose visitors as opposed to a site that has been proof read for any errors.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I hardly ever go affiliate hunting. People are always asking to affiliate with me. XD But whenever I do, I search around for good quality sites. Layouts are important, if a site doesn't have a good looking, functional layout, I will not affiliate with them. Also, the site must have a good amount of content and it must be of good quality.

My Main Philosophy:
Spend some time thinking through every last detail of your site. Construction can take as long as it takes to get everything in order. Dark Light took me a week to work out. Eternal Mayhem took about two. And Rave took about a month. All of my sites are doing very well and that's because I spent time working through everything. It's okay to be a perfectionist. In fact, that's the best thing to be! Get a few outside opinions from the Help Boards. Don't ask your friends, they will tell you what you want to hear to spare your feelings. You can even try asking a few reputable reviewers to just glance over your site and tell you what they think. I'd be more than happy to do that. And never, ever give up! I'm seeing site after site open up just to close down a few days later. Don't do that! Why work so hard to just throw it all away? Keep trying until you get it right!

Summer's Philosophy

How hard is it to own a site?
I think it depends on the type of site you own. For example Graphic sites and customs sites I would say are more complicated than owning a tutorial site, for the sole reason of updating and having to add to these sites all the time. I think the question you should ask yourself though is, "Am I going to keep this site going?" Because if you aren't going to stick with the site, no matter how difficult, there's no point.

Is activeness in a site important?
Nobody likes a dead site. Updating all the time and showing an effort into your site means that your serious about it, and it will attract more people. Updates and activeness keep the site going, and keep it interesting.

Is literacy important?
Definitely. There is /honestly/ nothing more annoying than leetspeak/chat speak or illiteracy. Nobody wants to be struggling while reading through your site, at least make an effort to sound professional.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
I automatically Accept my friends as affiliates. They're the ones who have helped me get the site going, get it off the ground. Other affiliates I look for are basically good quality sites. Showing an effort in the site you have is a big plus. Having a custom made, or layout that you made yourself is a huge attraction, and I would usually accept those sites as my affiliates. Having Good Quality affiliates affects that quality of your own site, so being picky is a good thing in this case.

My Main Philosophy:
Stick with it. Everyone gets rough, sketchy ideas on sites they'd like to make in the future. They get it started, and then don't keep it up. If you don't have time for a site, don't start one. Even if your site at first does not seem to be doing well, it's on it's way. Every great site started out small, but the reason they are well-known is because they kept it up and kept improving it.

How hard is it to own a site?
It all depends on what genre you have chosen. A guide is pretty simple because you post the information and then you just leave it for other people to read. A review site is high maintenance because you have to check your neomail and complete reviews almost every day. The difficultly level can also come from being to busy in your personal life to maintain your site well enough. But, as long as you put forth the effort to make your site amazing, anything can be accomplished!

Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness is extremely important! Picture This: You open a graphics site and post 20 icons, 3 banners and 12 glitters. Now, if you do not add more graphics, people will get bored with you content and they will move onto other sites. That is why activeness is extremely important. You can not have success without a good, full effort at maintaining a great site.

Is literacy important?
For those of you who talk in 'ch@t$pe@k' : mailto:ch@t$pe@k, no one understands you so please stop. When owning a site, nobody wants to sit at their computer desk and cypher through your jumbled lingo. Leave that to the scientists who study the moans and groans of the cavemen. Being literate is very important when owning a site. This site that you are viewing now is a fantastic example/ If a visitor can not read your rules, chances are that they will not be followed!

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
Like always, affiliates are very important. When looking for affiliates I would accept sites of medium to high quality with nice content and plenty of organization which is the average quota the majority of the sites here on Neopets follow when obtaining affiliates. If you are looking to become affiliates with someone, I reccomend filling out their forms or neomailing them with a friendly greeting. I have found that when you are nice to someone, they will relate to you better and they will be happy to add you to their long list of friends.

How hard is it to own a site?
Owning a site can be very hard at times, but it really depends on what type of site you own. With my site being a graphical site, the difficultly level tends to range near the top, unlike a directory let's say, which only requires the owner to post people sites. It's all about finding the right site for you and that you're capable and happy enough to run it. Just remember, activeness is a major piece of the puzzle. Without this piece, the puzzle, (so the site in this case), will not be complete. We all know everyone has a life off of Neopets and may even have school, but I can assure you, all of the good site makers have this problem. You don't have to be on every day, updating every little move you do, but if you want your site to be successful, you must try to be as active as you can. With the right help and guidance, you should have no problem starting a site. Just don't give up!

Is activeness in a site important?
Whoops I baffled on too much on the first question, managing to answer the second question with it!

Is literacy important?
Yes, it gets very frustrating when you enter a site and have to try understand chatspeak. It immediately sends a message though the visitors head, and most of the time they just leave. Yes you may not be the best speller, but there are many ways you can overcome this. For instants, spell checker. Just copy and paste all of your work on Word and it will show you all the grammar and spelling mistakes you made. I did this once and a load of red and green squiggerly lines appeared. I was firstly shocked that I hadn't spotted these silly mistakes, but also embarrassed that my site looked so unprofessional by them. So just remember, when you write something, make sure you have gone back and read through it again, it helps, really!

How hard is it to own a site?
It really depends on a lot of things~ What kind of site it is, how much work it'll take to keep it going, and how much time you have to run it. But most always, yes, it is pretty hard to own a site, especially a graphics page. You have to keep up with all the standards on other sites, and try to set your own. You have to cater to the public while still keeping yourself interested, especially if you take requests. Most importantly, you have to give quality work, whether it's graphics or reviews, and update enough to make people want to visit your site constantly and see what's new. So, heck yes it's hard, and stressful even, but it makes it all worth it when someone compliments your page :3

Is activeness in a site important?
Activeness is pretty much key for maintaining a site. Yeah, it's not always easy, since we all have something called 'real life,' but even if your site is the most amazing thing anyone's ever seen, no one's gonna come back if you update once every 6 months. Even if you're having a rough time keeping up, let your visitors know that you're not ignoring them~

Is literacy important?
If you're going to bother running a site, at least make yourself presentable. Honestly, it just makes you seem pretty darn lazy.

When accepting affiliates, who to accept and how to get one?
When I accept affies, I look at how much effort was put into the site. Is it just pictures or icons from Photobucket slapped on a page? Does the site feel unfinished and messy? Then no. It can really take away from the value of your site if you have a bunch of low-quality affies. Set people some requirements, and stick to them. And how to get new affiliates? Just ask! The worst they can do is say no~ But never ask if the site has closed affies, and be sure to read all of their requirements.

My Main Philosophy:
The most important thing about owning a site is that you have to keep at it! So your lookups aren't that good? Then try you best to make them better! So you don't have a fancy program like Photoshop? Think up of a new way to make it look like it! (Hey, it worked for me for 2 years~). So your site isn't that popular? Then advertise and get more affiliates! Giving up will get you nowhere, and you also can't be too hard on yourself. But know your abilities, and if you fail at a graphics site, then why not try opening up something else? And take suggestions and criticism when you can! ;D

Here's your chance to ask me a question and I'll answer it for you. I find "premade" guides are boring to do and I want to know the problems that are occurring to people today, so I created this! If you want a quick reply, I do suggest asking me. But! If you want to be helpful to others, ask a philosopher instead. They might have a more helpful answer so if I don't know the answer to your question, I'll put your question in the "Ask A Philosopher" section.

How to ask me something?
Simply neomail me the form and see what happens.

Whenever I save something in Paint, it always turns ugly. Is there any ways I can make it like it was how I plan it to be?
A lot of Paint-users deal with this all the time. There is a way. Simply save your image to a PNG. I give you an example:

Left side is saved JPEG while right side is saved PNG.

I'm affiliates with this site but his/her link back button codings does not seem to work. Is there a way I can make it work?
Err, yes. Is the textareas uppercase? If it is, tell the owner site to change it. Well, let me explain. See, image locations are meant to be lowercase so if the coding is uppercase, the coding won't work. Simply to back to the site, right-click the image and copy the location then put it in the original uppercase image location.

I'm not very good with spelling or grammars. I get low reviews about it and I'm sick of it! Is there a way to found out what words to correct?
Yes, there is! For a good spell checker, simply go to http://www.spellchecker.net/spellcheck/ and put the text in. There will be a pop-up that helps you correct every word. But beware, if you say "neopoints" or "neomail" or other stuff made by Neopets, it will be called misspelled. For grammars corrections, I suggest having Microsoft Office then put the paragraphs. If you see a green line below a sentence, it means it has wrong grammars.

I see sites with those really cool counters and I really want one, how can I get one? (1) The one that counts how many people are in your site and 2) the one that counts the total of people that have been in your site.)
1) Go towhos.amung.us and get the non-java coding. But only get the image url so edit the coding. Beware, coding of the website does not work in Safari. So use another browser if possible when going there.
2) You must sign up for an account in a counter site. I use boingdragon.com. Go to "Create a Counter" and yeah, make one. xD If you want, there is good pixel counters in Amber's Pixels or Futago. But make sure to credit them for making them for you. ^-^

I get bad reviews for having an emoticon after my sentence. They keep telling me that my grammar is wrong o.0
Your second sentence grammar is wrong. Before putting an "emoticon", put a period. It should look like this:
They keep telling me that my grammar is wrong. o.0
Hopefully, this should help.

The Best Of The Best

Here are some sites that I go to everday (or whenever possible). I think they are the most useful and helpful sites there are in Neopia. Though, I don't go to every site, I find the best and put it here. If I don't go to your site most of my time being on Neopets, then there's no chance your site will be up here.
There is no order to this. I do not "rank" site because they are all already good!
