EDIT: Due to the fact that I can't even keep up with my own writing at the moment, I'm afraid I'll have to say here that while I'm still more than happy to give general NT advice, I will not be able to read/edit your story. Published WorksDefenders of Neopia: The Vacation![]() 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 My first time in the NT on this account! Yay! ...anyway, it's about a young and ambitious Lupe Defender who wants a promotion, goes on vacation, and fights an evil scientist. *_* (Oh, come on. Surely you're intrigued?) Not all that deep or extraordinarily engaging, but a reasonably fun piece. It was always meant to be followed by a sequel. Jackal's a good character for me to write, though - she's one of my first protagonists who isn't partially villainous! MAGAX: Destroyer ![]() A short story about MAGAX and an old friend of his who discovers that he isn't the person he used to be. Not my best writing or the best story, but I have to say I quite liked the mood of it. I thought the end was worth reading, anyway. Unfortunately I don't think anyone really got that far. However, I'm very glad I wrote it and absolutely ecstatic that it was published! I do enjoy a good hollow, sorrowful story. :P The Sorcerer ![]() 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 Wow! I was amazed to see that Part 1 had gotten the Quote of the Week and that its picture was on the News Page. Speaking of the picture, Lockwood looks very sweet and disarming. I suppose I had envisioned him in Victorian era sort of dress, but that didn't make much sense because I used an Austen-esque writing style and, after all, Meridell is supposed to be medieval. I could write for hours about Lockwood - for now I will have to content myself with saying that I really love him (a bit narcissistic of me, perhaps, but what can you do?), and also that I felt this series overall was really something that came naturally to me. It was a lot of fun to write, and I'm glad the style seemed to work for most readers. I will say this: don't trust Lisha's narration. ;) P.S. Most commonly misspelled title in history. The Curse ![]() 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 Picture on the News Page again? You're the best, TNT! Once again, Lockwood looks extremely sweet and innocent, but perhaps that's just as well; I have an idea he enjoys being underestimated. About the story itself...well, maybe it's not terribly exciting, but people seemed to like the introspection. It's a lot darker than The Sorcerer, though, and really more involved - the characters are at least more developed by this time! Part Ten is probably my favorite. As for whether Darigan was right (it makes sense to those who've read it, I promise!) well, that's a matter of interpretation I suppose. Not that I don't have my own opinion, of course... The Traitor ![]() 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 12 Originally I was going to call this The Apprentice - both fit - but I decided that The Traitor was altogether more appropriate and exciting. It was a lot of fun to write, so I hope it was an enjoyable read. For those who haven't guessed it is indeed a sequel to The Sorcerer and The Curse. Incidentally, the picture was on the New Features page for the third time running! The artists must like the time period. xD (Although, between you and me, Lockwood was a little peeved that he wasn't in the picture. After all, he is so very handsome.) There were some plot issues with this one, if only because by the time I got through all twelve parts I just wanted to get it submitted...but I think it's still my favorite of the first three. Mr. Duplicity was a nice touch. 0:-) The Attempt ![]() This is a short story involving a thief and an amulet. It's in the Lockwood "universe," though it doesn't involve him as directly as the previous series. It was just a small story of no great importance, but I'm very glad it was published in the Christmas Issue and even gladder that readers seemed to find it enjoyable. Shows a rather ugly side of Lockwood's character, I'm afraid. But this one's been growing on me since it was published. :) More short stories are probably to come. The Anomaly ![]() 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 A shorter, lighter series without too much action. It was nice of them to give Lisha a picture at last! (Plus I really like the picture for some reason. Must be something about all those bright colors.) Anyway, as I promised beforehand, it wasn't terribly exciting and not much happened. It was mainly just a little diversion between larger things. Nevertheless, many people enjoyed the character interaction and knowing a little about Lockwood's family, etc., so overall I refuse to apologize for writing this. The Entreaty ![]() So in the usual tradition of my short stories, nothing very large or grand - but probably my favorite of my NT publications up to this point. Miss Colton is quite a lot of fun to write, and not to put too fine a point on it, a careful reread of this story may reveal certain aspects which you had not hitherto considered. :) The debate rages on (sounds exciting doesn't it?) as to whether Lockwood is actually nasty or nice, and of course each camp appropriately interpreted this story to suit its point of view. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it - things pretty much go downhill from here. 0:-) The Conspiracy ![]() 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9- 10 Everybody should know by now that my stories are generally about exactly what the title suggests, and this one's no exception. What, exactly, the title refers to is a different story. Anyway - this was my favorite series so far, particularly the last three parts, and I was especially fond of that maid. Things do get a little darker near the ending, but it's still positively bright and cheerful compared to what follows. As for the ending, well, I'll leave you to interpret that. (: The Bereavement ![]() A flashback story featuring Lockwood at 18 and his sister at 14, told mainly from her point of view after their father's death. The tone is obviously a little different from my other stories, which is probably an effect of the different narration. A lot of people have asked if he did it or not (you'll understand when you read it) and all I can say is, who knows? Impossible to say. P.S. Spot the cameo from Nicole Colton! Roxanne ![]() No satire, no Lockwood, no 18th-century writing style? No coincidence. While this is set in the general continuity of my Meridell stories (during The Conspiracy in fact, though I purposely omitted a note at the beginning and I'm not sure how many people noticed that) it really is meant to be somewhat separate. And, as readers may have noticed, it's not very well written either. Overall, this was just an attempt to break myself out of my writer's block. The main point I wanted people to walk away with was that Roxanne's name is not a coincidence. The Remnant ![]() 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 12 Ah yes, The Remnant. :) The Last Dance ![]() This one was a quick one shot; I felt like doing something completely different from what I usually do (and had also been reading far too much Edith Wharton). Nevertheless, it's actually one of my favorites. People seemed to enjoy the ending! Last Will & Testament ![]() A completely spur-of-the-moment Halloween story about a lawyer, the reading of a will, and a rather unnerving widow. On an incidental note, I have to say I love the picture they chose for it! Works in ProgressDefenders of Neopia: Grand Theft UmmagineNow where would the Defenders be without a sequel? Three guesses as to what Neopets character this one involves! :D Basically it's a lot more information about the Defenders, Jackal personally, etc... In other words, everything I didn't cover/forgot to cover/didn't want to cover yet in DoN: The Vacation. I sort of stopped work on this one to write The Sorcerer and then to begin its sequel and then to begin the sequel to that one... At some point, though, I think I'll get back to it. 2/~6 parts written so far. Order of Four A completely new and unrelated series, which has actually been in an almost-finished state for quite a while. The story of a boy named Felix. Should be done relatively soon, though I hesitate to make predictions. The Necromancer Set on the Darigan Citadel; the story of Emma Ward. A modern, crime-oriented series with a much different feel to it than anything I've done recently. Currently on Part Five of about...maybe eight or nine? ??? A short, silly series featuring Nicole Colton from the Lockwood series (but no Lockwood). She and her brother, in need of money, attempt to manipulate their aunt's last will and testament. 2/3 parts done, but it's kind of on hold until I figure out how to make the ending marginally more interesting. Story-Related FAQsCan I use (insert character here) in my story? First of all, if you want to use Lisha, Jeran, Skarl, etc., you don't even have to ask, because it's none of my business. They're Neopets characters - run as wild as you like with them! As for my original characters (more specifically Lockwood, since that's the one people seem to want to use with alarming frequency), the answer is...sort of. You're welcome to mention them in your NT stories, but I'd really prefer that they don't actually show up and talk much, simply because I'm afraid people will get confused with my actual storylines and what happens in your stories, and which is real. If I know you well, that's a different story; we might be able to work out plot details. Also, if you do plan to use one of my characters, I'd love it if you could run it by me before submitting (though I can't insist) just to make sure that nothing clashes hugely with the canon plot. I'm really sorry - I honestly don't mean to be mean about this - but I'm extremely possessive of my characters and it kills me to see them characterized wrong/in ways that don't make sense with the plot or timeline. Besides, isn't it more fun to come up with your own? :P You claim to be writing a sequel to your Defenders story - where is it?! Oh, about that... Haha. Uh, I do have the plans for it and a fairly solid beginning, and I actually really hope that it gets finished sometime because I'd like to get my interpretation of the DoN across. (It was barely even tapped into in Defenders of Neopia: The Vacation, which was only ever meant to be sort of a lame prequel.) Anyway, I guess we'll see... How do you come up with your story ideas? Magic. All right, I'm kidding - most of my ideas start with a) a movie or book I find inspiring, or b) a dream. From there they just sort of take off. Personally, I always start with some characters I'm very fond of, but I've known many fantastic writers who begin with a plot and then work out the characters. What is a cravat and why are you so obsessed with them? I'm not obsessed with them, Lockwood is. *shifty eyes* Anyway, they're basically a fancy sort of men's necktie you don't see very much these days. I really can't describe them that well, except that they're absolutely fantastic...look up a picture sometime when you're bored, why don't you? And just incidentally, he wears the silk ones, not the ruffly kind. ;) Have you published books in the "real world"? WOAH. I'm always intensely flattered when people ask me this, but I definitely haven't published anything outside of the NT! I don't intend to try for several years, either. Believe me, I'll be the first to let you know when I do. ;) What real-life time period are your Lockwood stories supposed to correspond to? That's a bit of a confusing question. Meridell and Brightvale are clearly medieval-ish. The writing style I use and the way most of the characters talk is early 19th century-ish. The clothing is pretty definitely Victorian. So...take your pick? xD What does the "H. K." in Lockwood's name stand for, and why does he never use his first name? His full name is Harlan Kingston Lockwood - probably, as one character mentions, with some other middle names stuck in there as well. His sister calls him Harlan, but apart from that he goes pretty universally by Lockwood. I have no idea why - you'd better ask him. It's a phenomenal series anyway, you should read it! 7/9 - Part Ten of The Conspiracy made Quote of the Week.
