The Wendrills: (When-drill) A race of Xweetok that lives among the Koa* Trees (*more about these later).

Habits: They use the leaves of the Koa trees to furnish their nests and the fruit and nuts of the trees to feed their families. In the spring, when the sweet juice inside the trees is running freely, the younger Xweetoks will poke holes in the bark and slurp out the sugary treat.

Characteristics of a Wendrill: Most obviously, their wings. They use these to aid them in climbing among the gnarled branches of the trees (and getting out of them!). Although they have very keen eyesight, their antennaes are useful in feeling around the bark at night when they need to leap from branch to branch. They have uncommon, yet earthy colors, and bright eyes. Their tiny feet and sharp claws are used to climb around the trunks and branches, and also to grasp the fruits of the tree down from the limbs. Wendrills are very smart, and very sassy creatures. They are about the size of a raccoon, small and lithe, and are expert tricksters.

Population: The Wendrills are only known to habitate this one small area outside of Frugue*, which is also the only place that Koa trees are known to grow. The exact number of the Wendrills is unknown, but by todays standards, they would be considered an endangered species.

Koa Trees:(Co-uh) The Koa trees are perhaps the most important part of the forest surrounding the small town of Frugue (Froo-gg). Their bark is used for medicinal purposes, which have proved of very great importance during the flu seasons. Their wood is used to build up the town, and to repair it when it needs a little pick-me-up. But perhaps the most important part of the Koa tree is that instead of breathing out oxygen like most average trees, the Koas breathe out a chemical that gives the creatures of the forest as well as in the town, a calm and restful sleep, free from nightmares. Because of this, Frugue is an extremely peaceful town. The townspeople have a calm demeanor and are generally always at ease. They love their town, they love each other, and they love the trees that grant them these blessings. Now, just as much as the Wendrills need the Koas, the Koas need the Wendrills. These tiny Xweetoks have proven to be very faithful bodyguards to the trees, their homes. Without the Wendrills the Koa trees would be chopped by foreigners, eaten by alien species, or destroyed by mites, all of these things not knowing the real greatness of the tree they are preying upon. The Koas and the Wendrills go hand in hand, and that's all anyone had ever known.

Story
It's a cool fall night, you have a lot on your mind. It seems as though your life and everything you have known is falling at a million miles an hour, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. So, you decide to get away from it all and take a relaxing stroll to ease your thoughts.

As you take your time walking down the sidewalk, in and out of the glow of streetlights, you hear a rustle in the brush nearby, but decide to ignore it. Taking a deep breath, you let your brain go back to being preoccupied by it's scrambled thoughts. But then the rustle happens again. Your curiosity gets the best of you, as you creep cautiously to the edge of the concrete. You peer in through the puzzle of leaves and branches, and your eyes are met by a pair staring back at you. At first, you are startled, and let out a sharp gasp, but upon further inspection, you realize the small creature would not be capable of doing you any harm.

W-what are you doing here? you ask the winged animal that you now realize is some subspecies of Xweetok, Are you alright?

Oh I'm fine, you could say, the creature's clear voice comes ringing through to your ears. I'm just taking a little rest, I'm a long way from home, and I have a lot to think about.

Yeah, I hear ya you chuckle, I'm in the same boat.

The Xweetok slightly sat up and perked up her fuzzy antenneas.

You know, I've never seen a Xweetok like you before.. where are you from anyway?

Well, I've got a lot of time to kill and a lot of thoughts to settle, so how 'bout we sit down and I'll tell you where I'm from.

The Xweetok gingerly steps out of the brush and lands her tiny footpads onto the sidewalk. She is just the most interestingly marked Neopet you have seen, and you grow curious to hear her story. The both of you step over to a streetlamp and take a seat on the curb.

For starters, my name is Snbel. You're right, I am a Xweetok, but I come from a family called the Wendrills. We lived in a forest just outside of Frugue, I don't know if you're familiar with the area, among the Kao trees. The trees were our home, our food, our shelter, everything we knew and loved. The trees protected us from the elements, enemies, and most importantly, the nightmares.

The Wendrills were living ignorantly in the forest, laughing and playing, that's all we knew. We never had a reason to be on edge, or in fear. Our days were peaceful, at night we slept soundly.

But slowly, we noticed something was going wrong. A few of our beloved Koa trees were beginning to wilt at the leaves. This was very strange, since the Koas, much like Evergreens, barely ever changed appearance, even while the seasons were shifting. We monitored the trees very carefully, we set up shifts, for some of us to stay up at night to see if there was anything disturbing the trees at night. But there was nothing.

The wilting continued, bark started shedding, and more and more trees were becoming infected. And then the nightmares came. Because our trees were dying, there were less to distribute the 'sweet dream' chemical that we so took for granted. Messengers from the town of Frugue told of disturbances in the townspeople's demeanors as well as a result of the nightmares. With no cause to be found, we were losing hope.

And then, one day, we found it. A group of child Wendrills came running frantically to where the majority of us were gathered. They were all talking so fast at once that we didn't even know what they were saying. They told us to follow them and we did, to a grove of especially large Koas. There at the base of the trunk of one of the greatest trees, twined around the strong, gnarled roots, was a thick, black vine. The vine was choking off the roots of the tree, disabling the juice to travel up and feed the leaves. Ultimately, it was suffocating it.

And the vines were everywhere.

We tried chopping the vines, burning the vines, but they always kept coming back, faster, thicker, more dense. And with that, so did the nightmares.

Packs of Wendrills started leaving. They couldn't handle the nightmares, they were losing sleep, they were hungry, and scared. I was scared. I needed to speak to one of the elders, get the truth about what was going on.

So I spoke to the oldest of the Wendrills. Her fur was beginning to thin and her wings were losing their lustre, but she was still the most beautiful of them all. I asked for the truth, and that's what she gave, but it gave me no consolation.

She said the Wendrills cannot live without the Koa trees. Those that had left will die. If the trees could not fight the infection, we will die. And the townspeople in Frugue will be plagued with their nightmares until they become crazed. She said that the elders had been meeting and discussing our fate, and that they believed a monster to be planting the vines in our midst. An enemy of ours from years and years ago. Some faceless beast that wanted nothing more than to see the demise of the Wendrills. And what's worse, the beast's food of choice is nightmares. It seemed as if there would be no cure for the vines, the Koas were fading and fading fast.

I asked her if there was anything anyone could do to save us, and she was doubtful. But then, I saw her a spark in her eyes. She told me that maybe there was a way that the Koas could regrow again, somewhere were the beast would never find. They would grow to be strong and healthy, and it would be just as this grove once was.

I asked her how. She reached for a small leather pouch tied around her waist and gave it to me. I opened it, and inside were 3 large Koa seeds. Their shells were glossy and hard, the unforgettable scent of a Koa's bark wafted through my nostrils. I looked at her curiously. She told me that I had to go, and I had to take the seeds with me. I had to go find somewhere safe, and far away. I had to be the one to regrow the grove and to keep the Koas alive.

I couldn't tell anyone that I was leaving, I had to leave then. I couldn't even turn back.. and I could save no one. She said that she would try to save those she could, but the outlook was grim. She said the Wendrills may be lost now, but that I could keep the Koas alive.

What more choice did I have?

So here I am, on my journey, to find this great place where I'm supposed to plant these trees. I try not to think back on how life once was, because now I have to make my own life. Everything is in my hands, everything. The Koas will be planted, they will grow strong, and before I grow old, and let out my last rasping breath, I will find the beast who destroyed my home, and I will destroy him.

As the Xweetok's voice fades, you stare in awe.

Suddenly all your problems feel so small.

Name: Andel (On-dull)
Species: Faellie
Color: White

Andel was part of a large family of Faellies living in Frugue. The young Wendrills often had a lot of fun chasing around these little creatures and playing tricks and games. After I had left The Koa grove, I found this especially small Faellie carefully following my footsteps. Once we acknowledged each others presence, we became great friends, afterall, the journey was pretty lonely. This little creature would flutter her tiny wings as fast as she could back to Frugue every now and then and bring me back news from home. News which was frequently grim. I named her Andel, meaning my 'little angel, or messenger.'
