This is the personal account of myself, and the kingdom of Remnic. My name is Siyago, and I am currently the most prestigious artist in my my kingdom, having risen to the ranks of a Prime by the time I was twenty, then soon promoted to the position of 'Speaker's Eye'.

I live in the capital city of Remnic, Urnacia, and have the privilege of living in the Sky Spires, the home of the King, his family, the Speaker, and countless help. The following sections of this journal will explain everything about my life and this wonderful, yet misunderstood, nation.

Artist's memoir

To be honest, there hasn't been much in my life. I was born to two merchants, the youngest child of six. All of my siblings were loud and destructive. In the hopes that I would be different, my parents named me Siyago, which means Quiet in our old language. Even as a young dragon, I showed signs of artistic talents. By the time I was seven, my mother was having me do the paints for the family every day, which was something I enjoyed immensely. They realized my talent wasn't being put to the use it could, though, and brought me to the attention of the Artist Sodality.

They, too, recognized my talent and took me in. I grew incredibly fast when my days were dedicated to painting and the arts, shocking many of my teachers. When I turned 13, I was already among the highest ranks in my sodality - something almost unheard of. By this point, I was painting and tattooing the bodies of the Primes themselves and, a few times, I had the honor of painting the King for a festival.

A few years past and not much exciting really happened. I traveled a bit, mainly to get more ideas for paintings, though the only place I could ever live is Urnacia. When I turned 20, though, a great surprise awaited me. One of the Primes of our Sodality, someone who I had never thought even noticed me, asked me if I might like to be a Prime. Shocked, I was unable to say anything, and he laughed.

He explained that one of the other Primes was wanting to retire, and wanted a young dragon with great skill to take his place. He thought immediately of me, seeing as I was rather learned in politics as well as art, and decided to ask me. Stammering, I exclaimed how it would be an honor beyond anything I could imagine to become a Prime. Then, with the approval of the Speaker, who was young like myself, I became a Prime.

The shocks didn't end there though. Not a year later, the Speaker came to be and asked me to be his Eye. He already had one, but he was recently found engaging in some rather shady stuff, and was then removed from the post. The Speaker, whose name is Kilios, said he noticed me because I was incredibly observant, and that I had a knack for all but vanishing when I didn't want to be seen. Well, one can't turn down the offer to be the Speaker's Eye lightly, so of course I accepted.

I have been in the post a few months now, and am enjoying it to no end. Sadly, I don't get to paint as much as I did, usually only doing my own paints and that of my friends' if I have time, but that is rare. I am honored to be in the post, though, and hope that I remain in it as long as possible.

Sodalities

Sodalities are an import part of the Remnician society. The headquarters for all them are in Urnacia, though they reach out to all the major cities and establishments in the nation as well. Sodalities are associations of similar interests and skills. They provide both teaching for those wanting to learn a skill, and employment for those good at that skill. Not everyone is accepted into a sodality, though. They choose those who show talent, and they attempt to make that talent grow. Some dragons never make it above a novice rank, while others become incredibly successful. Those that are not accepted into sodalities are often merchants of soldiers.

Those in these associations often have the symbol of their sodality tattooed on their body somewhere. Some only paint it on. Myself, I have it tattooed, though it is usually hidden under my hair. This was not on purpose, though, I assure you.

Each major sodality has three representatives that form the Primes. There are, of course, minor sodalities, but the following are the largest and most important.

Artist Sodality

I belong to the Artist Sodality, which is one of the biggest. For about a year I was one of the Primes before being promoted to the Eye. We are one of the most successful sodalities as far as money is concerned, but we also harvest a rich amount of talent. However, it is relatively hard to get into our sodality.

The artist sodality has many branches, spanning over a large range of art fields. There is picture painting, dancing, drama (both the writing of and performance), and singing. The section I belong to, though, was the art of body paint. Those in this field are often hired out to become the personal painter of someone, usually a wealthy individual. They also do tattoos, though that's an even finer art really. The paints and tattoos will be explained a bit later.

Our sodality is one that brings in quite a lot of money for the kingdom, along with chemists and sericulturists. Our beautiful paintings, plays, and writings are sold throughout the other countries, despite them considering Remnic an enemy nation. As a result, very few dragons are taken in that do not show a great amount of promise. We cannot afford to waste resources on someone who will not deliver.

Chemist Sodality

The Chemist Sodality is a very important one, possibly more-so than even Artists. They are the ones that create the powders for our paints and dyes, the medicines Remnic is known for, and any other number of things. Almost every other sodality uses something that the Chemists created. They are also important in bringing in money for the kingdom. The cosmetics and medicines they make are sold throughout the other countries, and bring in a vast amount of money.

The Chemists are notorious for injuries, though. Because they work around such dangerous chemicals and other things, it is quite easy to get hurt. Fortunately, their sodality is also in charge of the doctors and healers of the kingdom, so there are always a few on hand. The chemists are also sometimes called Alchemists, for they use both natural means and magic to create magnificent things from minor ingredients.

Sericulturist Sodality

One of the major draws for Remnic trade is the silk we produce. We are the only country who knows the art of harvesting silk, so the Sericultuists bring in good deal of money as well. They raise the silk worms, harvest the threads, weave the silk, and make the products of the silk. It is possibly the most care-intensive sodality, for, even with the aid of magic, it takes steady hands and a keen eye for detail.

Silk is what the Remnicians wear (when humans), so even in the country it is highly sought after. It is an exotic good outside of Remnic, and is rather coveted. A large variety of designs are available, as well as all the colors of the rainbow, though this all comes from dying. The dying is often done by the artists, or even civilians sometimes, but the most basic dyes are applied by the sericulturists.

Lapidarist Sodality

The Lapidarist Sodality is a fine one, though a bit smaller than most of the others. While the name suggests they only cut stone, they are actually experts in all things rock. While they do cut stone, they also look into the types of rocks, how to identify them, and how to utilize them. They also study the earth, such as earthquakes, erosion, and other things.

It may not seem like a terribly interesting sodality to be part of, but those who are in it take it very seriously, and love what they do. It also has the perk of having access to some of the finest gems before they're sold to merchants.

Historian Sodality

The Historian Sodality is pretty straight forward. They run the libraries in the kingdom, and work to preserve historical things as well as document history. They work mostly with books of course, though other things are just as important. They also preserve historical things around the cities, such as old buildings or statues.

Mostly, though, they work on printing and preserving books that are important, like old stories, records of the past, and so forth. It is a medium sized sodality, but brings in little to no money due to the fact that most of their work ends up in libraries. However, because Remnic values their history, they are quite important in all eyes, even if they don't seem like.

Astronomer Sodality

The Astronomers are a well loved sodality, though they tend to think highly of themselves in a lot of cases. They chart the skies and the movement of the stars, giving names to things in the heavens. They do have a certain amount of power, though. The Remnicians often look to the Astronomers to tell them what the omens from the skies are telling them. Quite often they have the power to halt ceremonies and celebrations simply by stating the omens are against it.

They read the skies as one might a map. When certain stars or planets are in certain spots, it can lead to either a good or a bad omen. It really has nothing to do with belief, it simply means that all elements are against or for something. Astronomy is rather precise occupation, so only the best rise to high ranks.

Sorcery Sodality

Possibly one of the largest and most respected sodalities is the Sorcery Sodality. It is the sodality that teaches the practice of magic. Of the four kingdoms, Remnic is probably the one that has the highest concentration of sorcerers. They teach such a wide range of things that almost anyone who has even a slight talent for magic can be taken in.

This sodality produces quite a lot of dragons who are skilled in magic, often sending them off to cities to teach it. Others produce magical objects, such as mirrors for scrying, to channel magic. Secretly, some have attempted to make an artifact as strong as the one New Strinston used against them all those years ago, but so far they've been unsuccessful...

Unusual Magic Sodality

This sodality is an odd one, more of a branch from the Sorcerers, and yet one in their own. They do not so much as teach magic as cultivate unusual inborn talents. For example, one might have a healing talent, which is something that cannot be taught. They would be taken into the Unusual Magic Sodality, and their talent enhanced through specific training. Sometimes they get very odd talents, though, which is where the 'Unusual' part of their name comes from.

Speaker's eye

In Remnic, the King doesn't really deal with matters of the government - at least not most matters. The one who does this is the Speaker - an elected dragon who rules until he/she steps down or is removed by the Primes. The Speaker chooses three other dragons, usually his most trusted allies, to become his almost-equals. These dragons are sometimes chosen from the Primes, like I was, or from other positions. These ranks are called the Speaker's Claw, the Speaker's Fire, and the Speaker's Eye.

The Speaker's Claw deals with trade, mostly, and with the affairs of the other kingdoms. The Speaker's Fire generally deals with matters of the military - this dragon is usually picked from the ranks of the military itself. Finally, there is the Speaker's Eye, which is the position I hold. It is probably the most misunderstood spot, which is exactly what it needs to be.

While the other two are rarely invited to sit in on sessions with the Primes, I am always present. My duty is to watch the Primes and anyone else present. You see, dragons tend to reveal a lot with body language when they believe themselves unwatched. While their tones and facial expressions are content, a slight tenseness in their shoulders could reveal hidden rage.

That is not all I do, though. I can go anywhere in the Sky Spires, for I have keys that open any door. No one can question when I drop into a room uninvited. No one can question why I am where I am. I must observe, be the Eyes for the Speaker where he cannot be.

While I've been in this post the past few months, I've had the opportunity to go where most never dare. Underneath the city there is a large network of tunnels, ones created both naturally and by magic. They lead to places all across the city, and often I turn up in the most unlikely of places. It is incredibly satisfying knowing that you could potentially go anywhere unseen.

Paints and tattoos

Unlike the other countries, the Remnicians aren't adorned with many ornate markings. In fact, we have very few markings if you want to think about it. Long ago our founders didn't want to be thought of as less beautiful and impressive than the others, so they started the custom of adorning ourselves with painted markings.

Now even the youngest of dragons are painted, though often the designs become more ornate as they get older. This body paint varies between patterns to detailed pictures of scenery or creatures. Sometimes they are simple designs, such as curls. Always, though, they enhance the existing markings, making them seem even more magnificent than they were.

Tattoos are also common, if one wishes a design to never go away. It is a bit painful, but sometimes the results are worth it. I myself prefer painted on designs, though my sodality's symbol is tattooed on my forehead.

The designs for body paint are endless. Some dragons even have their entire body painted to make them resemble something else. I personally painted someone once to look like a peacock, and the results were rather impressive when combined with their own touches of clothing and things. When those painted more exotically venture out of Remnic, though, they stand out quite vividly.

Jalarios

Jalarios is my my servant, but also a good friend. Though he resembles a snake, he is actually a small dragon, a sub-race of the Remnicians. Most of them are in servant work, like Jalarios, but they love this work, so it doesn't bother them too much. I hired Jalarios, or Rios as I call him, when I was starting to raise in the ranks of the sodality. Since then we have become rather good friends, and I treat him more as a brother than as a servant.

Now that I am the Speaker's Eye, I have found quite a few uses for him. Sometimes I must observe someone while they are alone, and certainly they would not do anything while I was in the room. Some places in the Sky Spires have hidden passageways and places to spy on the inhabitants, but other rooms do not. In these cases I often send Rios into those rooms to watch said person while remaining hidden in ways I could not accomplish.

Unlike most Remnicians, they do not usually have to paint themselves. Their markings are already quite wonderful. Sometimes, though, they might enhance their markings - like Rios. He has painted the stripes on his face, where before they only existed on his back.

Remnic

History

Remnic was founded around the same time as Holder Bay and Strinston, perhaps even before. No one is sure where the founders came from, but no attempt has been made to find out. The country was founded about 400 years ago, and has since flourished.

It is written that the founders first landed around the southern end of Remnic, which is almost nothing but mountains and rough terrain. This would have turned back weaker people, but the founders were determined to claim this land as their own. They settled in the shadow of this mountain, and made the city of Urnacia, which later became their capital. Remnic was a magic powerhouse at the time, and so all their structures were incredibly detailed and beautiful, all thanks to the magic they used in every day life.

It was during many explorations that they discovered the newly settled Holder Bay and, later, Strinston. Things were considerably friendly at the time between the countries, so Remnic shared the magic they knew. Holder Bay and Strinston were founded by similar races, but Remnic was almost completely different from them, in both appearances and priorities.

Because they wanted to show their fondness for their neighboring countries, they began to paint themselves with markings, complex ones like Holder Bayans and Strinstoners were naturally born with. It is, of course, a tradition still done today, but for different reasons.

The other countries also had a King, and he held complete power. The Remnicians hadn't yet figured out their government system, though it mainly consisted of meetings between the commoners and those higher up. However, they rather liked the idea of a King. The only question was, who should become the ultimate ruler for their newly found kingdom.

This caused some problems to rise in Remnic, and for a time everyone fought against everyone else. After a while, though, two factions appeared. They each followed a particular person they wanted to become the king. One was Jarcian, a dragon who was greatly known for his art, and Holis, a dragon who was quite well known and rich. The groups behind these two argued and became violent many times, but in the end Holis won out, possibly because of his wealth. He became the King, and that's where the problems started.

He grew rather ambitious, and started to try gaining some of the land Holder Bay had claimed. The once friendly Holder Bay then retaliated, showing they were more of a force to be reckoned with. Not only did they drive the Remnicians back over their border, but they took some of the land they had claimed, making Remnic even smaller. At this point, Jarcian, the other dragon who was trying to become king, used incredibly powerful magic to raise the mountain between Holder Bay and Remnic. In doing so, it kept Holder Bay back, and created a concrete border between them.

King Holis realized his error, and realized the Jarcian's magic could have saved their country from a complete take-over. He also realized what a stupid decision he made. Unwilling to give up his post of King, though, he gave Jarcian a new post - he created the Speaker post. Around this time the Sodalities had formed, so he also chose Primes. This took the load off of him to make decisions for the country, but still kept him in the highest post.

All of the Kings since have been descendants of Holis, but because of him our reputation has been rather tarnished in the other countries. No matter what the later Kings did, they still view us as an enemy. We were mocked for what little markings we had as well, so the tradition of painting your body remained, though now it is more of a pride and decoration issue than anything.

50 years later, when the country that would become New Strinston was discovered, Remnic wanted to claim it as their own. They were the smallest country, and wanted more land. However, they weren't alone, and Holder Bay and Strinston were soon after the prize. At this point, it was Holis' son that was the King, and he ordered his country to fight for the land. The Speaker, still Jarcian, surprisingly, agreed, so they fought for the land.

Unfortunately, all the magic in the world couldn't help them when the ultimate device was created. They didn't stand a chance. Morale weakened, they were easily driven out by Holder Bay and Strinston, retreating, wounded in body and spirit, back to their homeland.

200 Years after that, and 150 years ago, it was said that the device was found once again, and that a dragon named Kolvyr was guarding it. The King at the time wanted it for revenge against New Strinston, and sent out a secret force to try and track it down, without consent of the Primes or the Speaker. They always returned empty-handed, though.

Now, in present times, our current King is again ambitious for the Artifact, as it is known now. Our government is also, sadly, a bit corrupt. One of the King's sons, not his heir but the second in line, is the current Speaker, and so the King rules the Primes through him. There are active forces, both hidden and known, in New Strinston now seeking this Kolvyr. The Speaker does not like it, but he doesn't dare go against his father.

Government

The government in Remnic is very different from its neighboring country, though is slightly similar to that in New Strinston. There is a ruler, always a King, but, surprisingly, his post is more ceremonial than anything. He does have power over things that could drastically change his country, but most things are resolved by his Speaker and the Primes. The King's wife is not the Queen, and has almost no power. Always the King's eldest son will be his heir - if he fails to produce a son, then his closest male relative will succeed him.

The real power lies with the Speaker of Remnic. This is a dragon who is elected by the Primes from their own ranks. He holds office for five years, and then is up for an evaluation. If the Primes feel he is still doing a good job, he will keep his post for another five years. If not, he is replaced. He can be replaced before those five years are up, but it takes serious unrest for this to happen. The Speaker makes most of the decisions for the kingdom, though anything big he must consult the King.

The Primes are a collection of the three highest ranking members of each major sodality. The Primes are also elected by their sodalities to represent them. They vote on matters and consult the Speaker on matters. Almost every decision is voted upon by the Primes. Primes hold their positions for life usually, unless their sodalities feel they are no longer able to do their job. They may also retire by their own will.

Three posts remain in the government - the Speaker's Eye, Claw, and Fire. They are chosen by the Speaker himself/herself, and answer to the Speaker alone, unless they have broken the law and must be tried. They are outside of the reach of the Primes, and only the King can question their right to do certain things. In a way they are ranks even higher than the Speaker, but they have their limits. Much of what they do is kept secret, with the exception of the Speaker's Claw.

The Speaker's Claw deals with trade with foreigners, as well as anything else to do with the other countries. In a way this post is almost like an ambassador, but instead of being posted in the other countries, he remains in Remnic.

The Speaker's Fire deals with the military. Most often he/she is chosen from the high ranks of the military itself, or perhaps a retired soldier. They are basically the top military commander.

The Speaker's Eye, my post, is the most secretive. Very few people know exactly what it is that I do, other than watch for traitors and make sure the staff are doing what they should. You should already know all of this from the section above, so I won't go into too much depth.

In a way, our government is both tedious and fair. It assures that no decision is made without first being debated, and that most everyone can get a comment in.

Geography

Remnic is a relatively small country - smaller than the other three, at least. Its terrain is rather rocky, with open plains and grasslands. Mountains wrap around almost all of the country, with the exception of the north. There is a small gap on the border with Holder Bay, and that is where all of the trade goes through. There is also a bit of land to the very east, but this is cut off almost completely by these mountains. In the shadow on the east side of these mountains, also backed up to the southern mountains as well, is the capital city of Urnacia. It is a large city with cobbled streets, tall buildings, and three districts.

In the center of the city is the Sky Spires, the 'castle' of sorts where the Primes, the King and his family, and countless help live. It isn't so much as a castle so much as a collection of buildings. There are wide buildings down at the base of each spire, but the actual spires are the ones you usually see. They are incredibly tall, no doubt created by magic, reaching up to the skies, thus their name. Surrounding this entire complex is a stone wall, and the grounds inside are lush and green.

Beneath the city there are many tunnels, though some of them are sewers. In times gone, the founders forced a river underground to carry the sewage of the city away. Tunnels and passageways branch off from the sewers, though, almost creating an uninhabited city beneath Urnacia.

There are mountains almost barring Remnic from Holder Bay, but fortunately there is a narrow canyon/pass. There is a large town here, and is possibly the only town that openly embraces Holder Bay. This city is where all the trade must go through.

Magic

Magic plays a large part in Remnician society. We depend on it frequently for our finer products, such as glass and some cosmetics and dyes, so it has become very common practice here. Almost everyone knows at least some sort of magic, even if it is only enough to make house cleaning easier. Most who wish to practice it frequently, though, join the Sorcery Sodality, which teaches more complex things. However, there is also the inborn talents which come up now and then. They aren't as common in Remnic as they are in the other countries, though, so usually dragons rely on taught magic instead.

I myself know a great deal of magic, though I don't use it too much. My artistic abilities do not come from magic, nor do I ever plan to use magic to enhance them. However, the magic I know can be rather powerful if I choose it to be, so I try to avoid using it. One thing I do use quite a lot, though, is an inborn talent, one that is quite rare and few know about. It is a subtle ability to make myself unseen, even if I'm in plain site. It's rather like how a chameleon can hide itself. By eliminating motion, I simply become difficult to focus upon. It's quite useful in my position of Speaker's Eye.

Becoming a Remnician

If you want to create a character who is a Remnician, you're more than welcome to it! You must message Kennon, though, to make sure it's all okay. You must also follow a few requirements, specifically in design. Your character must follow the basic design elements of a Remnician so they appear to be part of the race. Keep in mind that your character does not have to be a draik/dragon, though it does help. You would also have to give credit of course! Below is a picture example with written guidelines.
