Oh, look at her fur colour! It's a beautiful white coat! Look, Armand!
Oh, she's beautiful! Oh, honey, look. She's opening her--wait... Qiiche, look at the colour of her eyes!
No... No! Not an albino!
It was true. Out of five pups, only one had survived to open its eyes. And what horrible eyes they were. Sure, they were bright and intelligent. Sure, they were big, round puppy eyes. But they were pink. Pink-eyed lupes were albino, and albinos needed to be cured.
Qiiche, we need to get rid of her.
I know. But it's all for the best. Unless this monstrosity can be cured, I don't want her anyways.
We can always try again...
These were the first voices the young pup heard. But soon after, she was whisked away and she never heard those voices again.
She was left with an expert Healer named Jaws. Jaws was strict, and unless his patients got better he had no respect for them. He treated the pup, who his parents called Shaemed, with what he called 'pigment injections'. He would inject needles below the skin and colour the little lupe purple. That way, even though she had pink eyes, she wouldn't be an albino.
But Jaws put the test needles too far into the skin. They went into the bloodstream. Shaemed became dangerously ill; it took all the herbs and remedies Jaws had to keep the pup alive.
Instead of purple, the pigments came out as a pale pink. Pink was still an albino colour, and Shaemed was still not allowed into the pack. But she and Jaws became friends. Jaws didn't want to hurt Shaemed anymore, and so he stopped treating her for her 'illness'.
Shaemed watched the other pups play one day, and was feeling quite sorry for herself. If she so much as talked to one of them, she would be beaten so severely that she wouldn't regain consciousness for several days. And so she watched the pups play, her pink eyes welling up with tears. She could never be one of them.
All of a sudden, she heard two voices whispering. The alpha and beta males of the pack!
Crinnon, I've confirmed it. Healer Jaws hasn't been trying to heal the Shaemed one.
I know, Bankfoot. I've already set the Legion upon him.
Shaemed's eyes widened. The Legion! They were going to kill Jaws!
She ran to Jaws' special hut and cried out in horror. It had been burned to the ground. Beneath a pile of ashes, she thought she saw a paw sticking out.
Before she could investigate, a lupe spotted her.
We cannot heal you now, Shaemed one, he hissed. You cannot be cured. You must go. And never talk to normal lupes; you are not worthy. If you learned anything in this pack, let it be that. Now go.
B-But what about my parents? the little pup whined. I was told I would get to see them someday!
You dare talk to me? snarled the lupe.
The next thing Shaemed remembered was waking up, far away from the pack. She was in a forest, and not a plainland like her old home. She began to search for a home.
About a year later, the young, blossoming lupess was roaming the fores as usual. She scented a cybunny on the wind, and quickly spotted it. She pounced... At exactly the wrong time. From another part of the clearing jumped another lupe, also eager to catch the cybunny. Instead, Shaemed and the other lupe crashed into each other head first, and the cybunny darted off into the brush.
The other lupe was positively outraged. You have deprived me of my lunch, you albino freak, he snarled.
Flinching terribly at his harsh words, Shaemed turned tail, tears stinging at her eyes. The other lupe was looking at her strangely. Did I hurt your feelings? he asked. Shaemed turned back toward him and nodded slowly.
The lupe roared and clouted her on the side of the head. Dazed, she fell to the ground. You are an incomplete being! You should not have the privilege of feelings! He muttered a strange chant as Shaemed got to her feet. She didn't even listen to what he was saying; she just ran away, fear eating at her. She did hear the angry lupe's chant end, however.
And at the moment she did, she felt like she was suffocating.
She stopped abruptly. She had barely begun to run. She couldn't already be out of breath...
She quickly pushed thoughts of the lupe to the back of her mind and tried to control her fear so she could think properly. Suddenly, she could breathe again!
She sat down to think about the strangeness of it. She eventually came back to the lupe's chant. That lupe had cursed her, hadn't he? What had he done to her?!
She began to feel angry. She had only bumped into him by mistake. He didn't have to try and kill her! But as her temper began to rise, she felt her breath becoming short again. She couldn't control her anger for the lupe, however. She couldn't breathe... couldn't breathe...
She woke up a few hours later, completely void of all emotions. She realized what had happened to her...
You are an incomplete being! You should not have the privilege of feelings!
She was cursed to be unable to feel...
Shaemed got to her feet slowly, thinking, trying not to let her despair swallow her up. She would find that lupe again, and force him to lift the curse.
She set off that day feeling neither excited nor sad. She simply walked away, leaving all her emotions behind...
