A black peophin colt was born to a sketch mare one dreary night in a forest marsh. The mare smiled, looking upon her new baby. "I shall call you Shadow," said the mare. "Your coat is black, just like the shadows." The colt whinnied, smiling at his mother. "I love you, Shadow," she whispered.

When Shadow became a full grown stallion, his mother was ill. "Mother," he whispered. "Will you live?" His mother sighed and coughed loudly. "I'm sorry, my dear, but it seems that I will not," she murmured. "Please, Shadow, remember me after I'm gone..." Suddenly, she stopped breathing. "Mother?..." he cried. He saw she was not alive at all, and he wept on her body all night.

In the morning, Shadow decided to leave his home in search of adventure. He got out of the water and dragged his tail around on the ground, but after a while, he got very tired. He lay on the ground, exhausted. A while later, a faerie pteri saw him and flew down to Shadow. "Are you all right?" asked the pteri. "I...I'm just tired," he said, weakly. "Would you like a ride?" the pteri asked. Shadow nodded.
