8/13/07- New layout for F.O.N.T! This one took me awhile. I should really learn some CSS! ;D It would make life so much easier. So yes. I hope it's more appealing to people who commented it being "Too blue". :D

8/17/07- Added a new paragraph to "Font Rating". It talkes about Harsh Raters. :)

11/3/07- WOW! Long time no updates my chumps. :D So sorry about it. School, like most on this site, is bogoling me down. I would just like to say that I still update a little periodically. Your emails are always appricated! Peace.
Also! I would just like to thank virtualmetalclone for alerting me to a miswritten information. # is not a poundsign. The proper term is the "hash" sign. I would just like to thank you for the help! :D

8/28/08- Oh my goodness, it's been a long time since i'v updated! Sorry guys! Well yeah, i've been trying to work on a new layout of F.O.N.T, but nothing is coming to me.. xD I also wish to kinda make the "make a font" part more concise. Well that's it for now! :D

A question I'm sure beginner font makers are wondering are "What is a font?". In short, a font is the arrangement of font faces, colours, and symbols/wingdings/webdings to use on the neoboards. A font can contain anything you want (that does not violate neopets terms and conditions). You could put lyrics to your favorite song. You could put an ode to cheese! Anything you want.

In a broad sense there are 3 different kinds of fonts. Premade fonts, font's that are made by you, and edited premade fonts. What is a premade font you ask? Well a premade font is a font that was NOT made by you. A premade font can be obtained from a website, a friend, or anyone.

What is a premade font you ask? Well a premade font is a font that was NOT made by you. A premade font can be obtained from a website, a friend, or anyone.

A font that was made by you, is an original. YOU were the one that made it. YOU were the one who decided what to put in it. This would mean that you would not have plagiarized anyone and it is your font.

Now the 3rd kind of font. This one's a bit tricky. An edited premade font is a font that was made by someone else, but you edited and tweaked it. It is your responsibility to ask whoever made the font for you if this is okay. Some allow it, some don't.

Now an even trickier topic. Stolen fonts. I did not consider this to be a "type of font" because it shouldn't be. A stolen font is a font that someone made for themselves, but someone has stolen it. If it is not meant to be a premade, then DON'T use it. Another type of a stolen font would be you taking credit for a premade font. That's a no-no also. I would consider a stolen font to have the same set up as the original. Imagine if you've just spent some time on a font that you really like and you see that someone has swiped it from under you? Not very fun is it?

Finally eh? Okay. If you're anything like me, then you might need some thorough explaining to first get the concept of making fonts. I will go step by step on how to make a font:

1) Let us start of really simple. There is room for a font in the neoHTML and the signature. The signature is found at the bottom. The neoHTML would be where your words are typed on the neoboards.

Now we are going to look at the codes that are used to make a font. These codes are the raw materials to make a font.

3): This would be a very simple code for the neoHTML.

The "c=#000000" would be where your font colour would be. The 6 numbers would be considered a HEX code. Hex codes are used instead of colour words because that can be much shorter. In the neoHTML and signature area, space is limited so you want to save as much space as you can.

The "s=2" would represent the size. The highest size would be 4 and the lowest would be 1.

The "f=verdana" is a font face. A font face is the name of a font to make your text look different. For example, Arial is a font face. It makes your text look rounder. There are many different font faces that you can use. :).

REMEMBER! At the end of the neoHTML you have to end the code with . Why you ask? That's just the way it is. XD.

4) : This would be a simple code for the signature or "siggy".

c=#000000", "s=2", "f=verdana" would have the same application in the siggy as it does the neoHTML. The TEXT GOES HERE would be for any text you would like to put in.

Like the image says, it looks pretty boring right? Even if you changed up the fontfaces, color and sizes. It just doesn't look right. So now, I'm gonna tell you about a few "tricks" you can use to make your font how you would like it:

TIPS AND TRICKS
1. A MUST for fonts is to get rid of that siggy line. The siggy line is that dotted line that separates the neoHTML and the signature. This can be fixed very easily. First, at the end of your neoHTML put a " [". Include the space, without the quotes. Then at the beginning of your signature, put " ]". Include the space, without the quotes. The siggy line should disappear.

2. Another easy but good tip is centering. At the beginning of what you want centered put "". (without the quotes). You also must end the code. So at the end of what you want centered put "". (without the quotes

3. You can also make your font Bold, Italicized, or Underlined. You do exactly the same thing as centering, but you use: Bold= and , Italics= and , and Underlined and

4. You can also use webdings, wingdings, and symbols to enhance your font. Webdings and wingdings are font faces. So replace your old font face, and you can now type loads of cool characters! Some examples of webdings are:
a f t k c .Wingdings are pretty much the same concept. Symbols are a tad different. They are not a fontface, but characters. So they would be like your regular numbers or letters. Some examples of Symbols would be: . You can also get different little pictures. Like happy faces: and music notes: . One MAJOR problem is that since the sizes of fonts only go up to 4, they can look REALLY small. :( I wouldn't get discouraged though. These are really good assets to make your font great! :D

5. You will also need the [br] code. This creates a page break wherever you put it.

Font Rating is a very simple concept. It's pretty much when someone tells you how good your font looks to them. Rating is usually done on a scale of 1-10 or in percents.

When you make a good font, why wouldn't you want to show it off to the world? Font rating is also very addicting. Once you start, it's hard to stop. There are some things to remember before you head off to the burly depths of the AC:

1) The main thing to remember is not to revenge rate. This is when you get a bad rate, and you rate their font just as bad. So pretty much, it's exactly like the name states, "revenge rating". Revenge rating is also known as RR.

2) Don't take rates so seriously. When most people get into the groove of font rating, they forget it's just for fun. So don't stay at the board that gave you a bad rate and harassed the rater. Just leave. You have the power (surprisingly). Just move on, and go to another board.

3) If you really wanna get into the font rating business, then I suggest you listen to suggestions. These might help enhance your font.

4) Remember, just because you got a bad font rate from someone doesn't mean you have to change your whole font. It's your font, right? So you can do whatever you want with it.

5) A suggestion is: don't get premade fonts rated. Most raters don't like rating premade because you did not make it. It seems like you would be trying to take credit for the fonts.

There are also HARSH raters on the AC. There is a LOT of controvery about Harsh raters. "Harsh or just plain mean?". "They do it just to make themselves feel better". "They're just trying to be honest. Nothing wrong with that". Harsh raters will usually indicate that they are so by the board title or the first post. This is pretty much a warning. Don't fight the rate they give you. I would just walk away. There are always always gonna be loads of raters out there. I'm sure some of them you won't like. But that's their choice. And it was your choice to ask them for a rating. So be respectful and show that you can be take a few bad rates. :)

ac·ro·nym (k'r-nĭm') A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging.

On the Avatar Chat, there are LOADS of acronyms used. I'm sure some new to it are scratching thier heads in confusion. Have no fear! I will explain as many acronyms I can! Have any more that aren't explained here? You can drop me a mail!

FF Font Face or Firefox

With the new layout of neopets also came problems on the neoboards. Especially in Firefox. Two major problems surfaced concerning FF.

PROBLEM 1:
You can NOT see wingdings or webdings in Firefox. All they see is the letter, number or symbol.

SUGGESTION TO FIX THE PROBLEM:
Of course some people DON'T use FF. Some use Internet Explorer. So If you wanna, you could use them still. In my opinion though, you could use symbols instead. You could make different things with the symbols that could be a substitute for web/wingdings. EVERYONE could see it then. :)

PROBLEM 2:
Some times people using FF won't be able to see colour in your font. They will just see black.

FIX THE PROBLEM:
All you have to do is add a hash sign (#) to the front of the colour code. So instead of: 123456, it would be #123456. Simple enough eh?

These are the only 2 problems I know of concerning Firefox. Know some more? Want them the be featured? PLEASE neomail me. =D

In this area, there will be quotes from experience font makers. So what does make a good font?

Colors, webdings/wingdings, words and alts are only tools for a font. What makes a good font is the font makers imagination. People just think fonts take 10 seconds to make but if it's a good font then it takes a lot of time to think up and then make. A good font is hard work and imagination and lots of special care. -ismark5555

I think symbols, colours and determination to finish makes a good font and trying, just experiment with wingdings, webdings and as many symbols as you can without making it look terrible. -willow_643

Hmm.. well there are lots of things which make a good font, one main obvious thing is colour co-ordination. Unless it's for the default avatar. Aside from matching colours I find it imporant to put them in the right places. Also it's important not to overuse the symbols web/wing dings unless they go together nicely and try to aviod using symbols like $ and @ as it makes your font look less appealing. Don't forget to remove the siggy line =). -lady_beyonce007

I like simple fonts, NOT PLAIN, but simple. I also like when the font has an image :] -water_faerie800

Good fonts are creative, original, are different from the norm. They use colors and font faces in good form and their fonts are something people have never seen. =D -baseballluver727

A good font takes a lot of hard work and originality! -suedeguitargirl

A good font isn't cluttered, doesn't blind, and makes the owner happy. People get so caught up in what other people think of them that no one really stops and asks themself "Do I like this, or is this what other people want?" Fonts are all about individuality, and we should totally take the time to express ourselves! =) -the_grey_faerie137

A good font is something that becomes more than just colors and text. A good font is one that you scroll back up the page to look at again and think "Wow, look at that!". A good font is something that can be related to. A skilled, competitive fontmaker knows what people like, and knows what they will be attracted to. A good font is a poetic blend of colors, font faces, words, and symbols, put together in such a way that others can look at it and think, "Now that works. It flows." What makes a good font? Colors, variation, originality, set-up, and something people can relate to and find interesting. -whitefang173

A great idea and a little bit of imagination. Set a goal, put your mind on it... If it doesnt work, set it aside and work on it some other time. -inkd___x

A good font is one that reflects who the font maker is. It dosnt have to be fancy, just good enough that the maker of the font loves it. -i_love_fonts

Fonts are really hard to make, even more hard to think of what other people will think of it. But as long as YOU, yourself, enjoy it, it shoiuld be okay. :) Even if someone gives you a low rate for it, it really matters what YOU think of it. ^^ -drunkk
