Introduction

Walking through the Haunted Woods, you hug the package you're carrying closer as you battle the heavy wind. It is long after dark, and you seem a bit lost as you trudge through the seemingly endless woods. The wind is almost ear shattering, and you nearly trip over the mass of tree roots on the ground. You press on; it's only a few more minutes back to your house, to safety. Or so you think.

You hear a loud crash, or cackling laughter, it's hard to tell in this wind. You disregard it as the wind breaking a tree limb, or something of the sort. Silly human, I am not of the wind, I am the wind. You hear a loud thundering voice call out.

Wh-who's there? You stammer, starting to lose the battle with the wind. Ah, but it is not me you should be afraid of, it is yourself, your past.

Before you can even ask what it was talking about, thoughts of your past come flooding back to you. Memories that you had buried deep in your heart and locked away. Ones of death and despair, horrible things that you had caused.

You see? I am not the one who created these memories. The voice bounced and echoed through the woods, never seeming to end. How did this creature know these things? Was it making you remember? And if so, why was it making you suffer for what you regretted?

You try do get away, and start to run. It's no use, you don't seem to be getting any farther. The thoughts wouldn't leave you alone either, they were almost making you sick to your stomach.

You hear more cackling, and a horse appears from the misty wind. It has a sleek build, and is rather thin. You can faintly see its rib cage and hip bones. It's hard to focus on it, it seems to be constantly in motion even though it's not moving. Its horns are the only things tangible about it. Two piercing silver daggers on its head. Its eyes were glowing red, but they looked dull, and almost sad.

Who-What are you; what are you doing? You ask, trying to make sense of this ghostly being.

I was free-

Free of care, I was born into a pure Avoca herd. I was nothing special, just an ordinary spring foal, that is, until the herd leader saw my head. According to legend The Avoca with two horns was supposed to bring peace to waring herds. You see, it wasn't all peaceful. The Perth herds were at war with Exeter and Tullah, Zeehan was at war with Cygnet, and Avoca was at war with Waratah. Waratah is a ruthless herd when it comes to war. Their markings provide them with excellent camouflage, making surprise attacks something to be feared. I lived in a secluded field, locked away many years before by a landslide. We were shielded from the wars, but that didn't mean that the heard leader didn't know of the legend. He knew far too well, he had lived in the middle of war until he was separated from his mother in the landslide. He wasn't sure what to do with me, there was no way for him to get me to the waring herds. He just decided to leave me be, the legend probably wasn't true anyway. I grew older with friends, and no one thought much of my horns. The humans figured out how to cross over the mountain that closed us in the prairie. They would come and try to capture unis out of my herd, purebred Avocas were highly sought after, as most where mixed with other breeds by then. We're well muscled and well rounded, so that makes us ideal for work. Eventually they learned that the younger unis were harder to break, and started going after the foals. My friend and I were the two best looking out of all the younger ones that year, so we were the first two they went after. There were four of them, and they were riding what looked to be purebred Tullah unis. Tullah's are the fastest out of the Tasmanian Island unis, so they caught up to us quickly. I slipped into a cave, so they didn't see me, but they had captured my friend. I could hear him yelling, and struggling against them, he wanted to keep his freedom and he was willing to fight for it. He struggled against them, finally breaking the ropes and fleeing back towards the cave I was hiding in. One of the humans saw a glimpse of my eyes in the cave and went after me as my friend rounded the corner and was stopped short by more people, who then roped him once again. I ran towards the back of the cave, finding it was much bigger than I had expected. I kept going until I reached the end, but there was a light peeking through the crack in the rock, so I kicked at it. The stone wall crumbled, revealing a busy highway on the other side. At the time I didn't know what a highway was, nor did I know that I could be killed by a speeding car. I just knew that I needed to get away, and that there was no way to go but through the road. I hesitated for a minute, but I could hear the human coming after me and getting his rope ready, so I made a mad dash for the road. The human threw his rope, and everything seemed to go in slow motion. The sound of my hooves on the pavement, the screeching brakes of the car, and the whipping of the rope. It was as if the rope and the car were racing to who would get to me first, and the car won. It also turns out that there was another part to the legend, which was indeed very true. It said that if peace was not restored by my death, that I would be stuck here, and would be forced to take people's joy in order to survive.

Take people's joy? You ask, slightly confused.

Yeah, erasing all of their good memories, and taunting them with the bad ones.

Is that was you were doing to me? A slight twinge of horror shows on your face, you didn't feel depressed, maybe he wasn't finished with you?

Yeah, that's not everything though, I haven't erased your good memories yet.

Y-yet? You barley make the word out when he turns on you, lowering his head and charging towards you with his horns pointed straight at your heart. You freeze, not able to run, and try to shield yourself. You prepare yourself for the blow when you hear him skid to a stop. Instead of taking the opportunity to run, you look into his eyes, seeing them tear filled and distraught.

I-I can't do this anymore. I want my freedom back. His voice wavers, and he lowers his head to the ground. As soon as he utters the words the wind stops, and he vanishes. You look to see what he had left behind, a few pieces of paper. You lean against the tree to look at them, too curious to use your common sense and just head for home.

Tasmanian Island Uni

We are a rare species of uni, there are very few of us left now too. We came from Tasmania, of course, and the breeds are named for what part of Tasmania we are from. There are seven different breeds, Avoca (Ventus), Cygnet (Crispo), Exeter (Bacca), Perth (Flamma), Tullah (Creperum), Waratah (Bellum), and Zeehan (Otium). All of the breeds have extremely different markings, you wouldn't even know that they belonged to the same species, except the conformation is the same. A well muscled-sleek build, for speed, especially with swimming.

Avoca
Breed standard- Brown coat with dark brown stripes, three on the back, one on the outside of the hind legs, two on the inside of each leg. Dark grey hooves, light brown horn. Retractable brown wings, and dark brown mane and tail with multiple shades of brown streaks. Extremely dark brown eyes.

Cygnet
Breed standard- The colors are terribly off on the picture, sorry about that. D= Light tan coat, brown mane and tail. Dark grey hooves, light grey horn. Green stocking on front right leg with two green spots above it. Green swirl marking with two green dots on face. Green eyes.

Exeter
Breed standard- Large white patches on a light grey coat, and a white sock one the front left leg. Front right hoof is a light tan, the rest are dark grey. Mane and tail are dark grey. Horn is light grey, and the eyes are a greyish-blue.

Perth

Tullah
Breed standard- Black wings, dark grey eyes. Light grey horn, dark grey mane and tail. Black face and legs, with large sharp edged black triangle shaped patches on body, the rest of the coat is white.

Waratah
Breed standard- The color got killed on this one too. D: Dark brown body with darker brown stockings. Brown mane and tail, grey horn, and maroon eyes. Dark brown hooves with yellow stripes.

Zeehan
Breed standard- White ears and muzzle, silver horn. Brown mane and tail, and tan body. White stripe on each leg, dark tan stockings. Light tan hooves.

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.
-J. R. R. Tolkien

You look up at the sky, and stare into the brightening clouds, it's almost dawn. You are turning to leave when you hear the unis soft voice again. It-it looks like I did bring peace. His voice still wavering a bit, My friend was mostly Waratah, it turns out, all I had to do was say no.
