Welcome to my application for the Maraquan Gelert Zukodi. Before we begin,
I'd like it to be known that I made this petpage entirely of my own accord: I
was not forced into making one. Hopefully this application will be a bit more
successful than my last two, but I plan on putting a lot more effort into this as
the deadline is a lot further away than it was for Zokean and Snbel. In any case,
my name is Tawreh, and I'd like to welcome you once more to my application. I
hope it loads well for you, and I hope you enjoy your stay.

Why Zukodi?

This is, to say the least, one of the most tedious parts of the application. No real creativity needs to go into this part. So I decided to get it out of the way right at the start so it's all done and dusted.

You described Zukodi as your "prized possession" so I'm sure you'll understand when I refer to her as one of dream pets. Ever since the Maraquan Gelerts were released I have longed for one, but for the last couple of years I have been practically obsessed with my Lupe characters. When I first joined Neopets in 2001 most of my pets were Gelerts (some still survive - Curvine and Dreioko, I believe), and I longed to paint them rare and elusive colours; but I had neither the drive to make money nor the time to. As my interests changed and I created my Lupes, my love for Gelerts was lost; it was only when I returned to Neopets this year after a short hiatus that I realised some of them had to go, and I rediscovered those beautiful pets that are Gelerts.

As I've mentioned, however, I had nor do I have the drive to create money by means of restocking or playing games (believe me, I've tried and it's not pretty). And thanks to my ambition to paint all of my other pets from cheapest to most expensive, and to helping a friend out by buying her a Faerie Lupe Morphing Potion to create her dream pet, I've not had the money to get anywhere near my dream of a Maraquan Gelert.

So I began to look at Neopound and almost immediately Zukodi caught my eye. Here was a perfect Maraquan Gelert, with a beautiful name, and intelligent and strong to boost; obviously you'd put care into her, and I should at least pay respect by putting an equal amount of care in myself. This is partly why I'm striving to create a brilliant petpage for her as my application, as well as a deep and meaningful character behind the name, too. So enjoy your stay. Basic Premise

The basic idea that I have in mind for Zukodi is that she is a gentle giant. Thinking of blue whales in the big wide ocean, I decided to make her just as large, if not larger still; and so, revered by many, yet feared by more. Perhaps she could be likened to the Loch Ness Monster, in that sense.

And yet... she isn't what you might think her to be. Zukodi is immensely clever, and infinitely wise. She is as old as the earth, as old as the water she lives in, and has seen creatures come and go, mourned the loss of life and shared in the joy of new life. But this wisdom can be a hindrance, and Zukodi, whilst respected, feels the loss of life as no other could. Whilst it would be possible for her to find a mate and have offspring, she wouldn't, because she will live forever.

Perhaps it is the burden of the knowledge that makes her wary around others, and somewhat reluctant to speak out loud; in fact, it is several hundred years since she last uttered a spoken word, although - like whales - she is able to communicate through a series of ghostly moans and even - like smaller mammals - through chirrups and purrs.

It is incredibly frustrating for her to be so smart: her knowledge is so vast compared to that of any other living creature that she finds it near impossible to communicate certain ideas. This is partly why she has lapsed into silence: so that she may watch the world go by and be there when it needs her; so as not to impose herself unnecessarily on the world.

That is my idea for Zukodi and I plan to elaborate further in the application; however, I feel this gives enough of an outline for you to understand her character.

A Story

Before we begin, I'd like to point out that this is not an entirely necessary part of the application for you to read; however, writing it gave me a better idea of Zukodi, where she came from and how she came to be, so you may find it an interesting read. Feel free to skip it, though.

Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3

Chapter 1 - A Beginning
The Bible states that the world was made in seven days. Be that truth or fiction, nobody is sure, although many would argue nowatimes that it is a certain, irrevocable falsehood; that the world evolved over billions of years into what it is today.

There are some inarguable truths, though: for example, the day is lit by the sun, the night by the moon; towering trees crown the land and soaring birds grace the sky. Not every creature has been around since forever. Many evolved. But there are some that began with the world, lived through everything and continue to exist to this day.

And yet, not every one of those creatures lived all of those billions of years. Only a few managed that feat: the God and Goddess of the World, out of whom came Chaos. Nobody knows from whence they came; nobody dares to hazard a guess; but parents throughout the ages have told their young tales of the three gods, and the way they brought about everything that surrounds them.

From the God and Goddess came the Greater Immortals; from those came the Lesser Immortals; and in between came the Spirits of the great World. These Spirits, many millenia old, were only brought about as the first ape rose on his hind legs and picked up tools, and are much, much younger than the Greater Immortals. Five of each, these Spirits were guardians of each of the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water.

Out of nothing, the God and Goddess created Spirits to watch over the elements and to guide newborns through their lives, each in their own special ways. After centuries of training, they were released into the world, to guard it; to do the job that they - the Gods - no longer wanted to do. Some wandered the World, guiding souls as they saw fit; others settled and didn't move. This was particularly true of the Water Spirits, for where else could they reside other than in water?

One settled in the Loch Ness, in Scotland; one in the Mediterranean Sea; one in the River Nile; one further afield in the Mississippi; the last took to the oceans, wandering endlessly in search of a home, but never quite finding one and turning that into her home instead.

This Water Spirit went by the name of Zukodi, a name given to her on the dawn of her birth.
Chapter 2 - A World Evolves
Zukodi passed her training faster than you care to imagine, training under the wing of the great Goddess herself; a particular favourite, she was given free reign of the world to learn as much as she could, to train as hard as she could. And Zukodi took up on that offer, teaching herself languages that didn't even exist, learning to converse with animals of the land, sea and sky, and educating herself about the plants and nature around her. But as all good things must come to an end, this one did with rather an abrupt stop.

One day, Zukodi felt like she belonged; the next she was alone in a harsh, grey world that didn't seem to care any more.

The God and Goddess had left, leaving Chaos in charge, but only for a short time before they pulled him from the world too; and then Zukodi truly was on her own, without the guiding hand she had had before, in a world where creatures feared her size and seemingly infinite knowledge.

It was then that she turned to the oceans, as her brothers and sisters had retreated to places across the World; for almost a hundred years she locked herself up under a sheet of ice in the southernmost part of the World, a place that humans would call Antarctica. Being but a Spirit, she didn't need to eat or even breathe; and there she hid until the waves of loneliness subsided, and she came forth from her icy abode to explore the World once more.

To Sum It Up: Her Pros and Cons

To sum her up in a few sentences, Zukodi is a balanced, peaceful and sincere being. She generally does not talk, but loves to go with the flow - and likes to be able to bob along and enjoy her life without "rocking the boat", so to speak. And yet - Zukodi is old, she is wise, and she has seen the world come and go; underneath her calm and peaceful exterior, Zukodi is afraid that the world will "fall apart". She hates change, but puts up with it, because it must happen. Nature - it terrifies her, although she is a part of it, she feels it all around; strong, disruptive people and forces alike intimidate her.
